Jacun's Alchemical Goods

Master Jacun had approved the order from Val'Maranthy, which taught Sivan something about his master. He wasn't judging him, but he was now aware that the alchemist's personal code of ethics absolved him from guilt should the things he craft be used for some ill purpose. And again, Sivan wasn't judging. He didn't know these enemies of the sorcerer but there are questions he would have asked that Jacun did not feel compelled to ask.

And so he was tasked with isolating the sedative effects of valerian root. He had seen the plans for the entire project; in fact, he had written some of them—specifically those to do with the air elemental that would ensure it was delivered properly. So, perhaps Sivan was the one who ought to be questioning his moral framework. This wasn't the only isolate going into the finished project, but it was the easiest to accomplish and the most difficult to mess up. Jacun would do the more difficult parts, which made sense. It was his reputation on the line, after all.

He measured out the ground valerian into the alembic's cucurbit, then added pure water. The cucurbit itself was made of lyrethil glass and etched with the Sigil of Dissolution. Their workload was heavy and so there was less time for traditional alchemy and they were opting for more occult practices. He then scrivened three different pictographs on tiny squares of paper and dropped them into the water. The Sigil on the cucurbit would make this process fast; the pictographs would help isolate the correct property from the valerian.

Affixing the cap, he took a lyrethillium vial and marked it with a Sigil of Reconstitution with a wax pencil, then set it up under the end of the tube to catch what came out and bind the distillation until such time as Jacun chose to add it to his own, more complicated work.

He tapped a sigil on the base of the heating element and the pyrolyth-powered thing powered up immediately, and it was only seconds before the water began to boil. Humming to himself, he watched through his rune, seeing how the lyrethil glass, the pictographs, and the heat pulled what was necessary out of the herb. The steam condensed in the hooked cap and by the time it dribbled down into the vial, it was cool enough that he wasn't worried about losing too much of it to evaporation. It only took a few minutes for the water to boil off, and he turned off the heat at just the right moment so the mash of herbs and paper were still damp as it cooled down, which would make it easier for him to clean everything out afterward.

With gloved hands, he removed the cap from the cucurbit and shook it a little so the last of it would fall into the vial where he could see the aetheric pattern crystalizing. Smiling to himself, he stoppered it with a cork and put the vial on the tray where he had already set up the necessary things for Jacun to do his business, and then he went about cleaning up.

"Perxy," he said aloud.

The task called for a stronger elemental than his Nut, who helped tend to his home and do odd little jobs for him. She came highly recommended, and agreed to perform the service for him. She was intelligent enough to understand the complexity of the job as well. He was able to share his memory of Val'Maranthy with her and explain that he and his companions were not to be touched, but rather those at whom he tossed the bottle of sedative.

She came, feeding upon a morsel of aether that he had left in the circle of runes and scrivened connections around the bottle to direct her from her plane to this one. There was a sparkle of static about her form, that was more visible to him thanks to his rune than it would be for others. The static would be a good addition, shocking those she came into contact with such that they would inhale sharply, making delivery easier.

I don't like this, Exael said.

I understand your objections. Should I defy my master?

These things have repercussions. You should know that.

Very well.

The elemental observed as if this interaction was something she could sense. Exael wasn't his aidolon, not yet. The spherebinding hadn't been done correctly, and so he just existed in Ransera via concordant until such time as Sivan could perform a sacrament. At least, Sivan hoped he would still want to be his aidolon. Celestials could be exacting, he was finding out. But a spirit of wisdom was something he needed in his life. And if this was the tougher road, at least he could still contract wild spirits.

"There is enough aether stored in the bottle to keep you until your work is done," he explained. "When it is done, return to me, and I will complete the payment."

There was a ripple through her aether: her agreement. Then she shrank down and phased into the bottle before she was fully manifest. As soon as the summons was complete, he broke the circle, took the bottle, and placed it in a small, padded box.

"A delivery for Siorey Val'Maranthy from Master Jacun," he said at the gate, then loitered in the foyer while someone sent word to the black robe that he had a delivery.

Siorey had been studying more on the on eldritch artifacts, at least what all he could given the resources available to him. He was neck deep into the books, several tomes that were old but not too worn and legible which was one less headache that he needed. He was entrenched in one book, it detailing nothing close to what he was looking for, and he was starting to become annoyed.

An attendant come up toward him, informing him that there was a delivery for him. He immediately knew what it was and was so excited, it was finally done and he couldn't wait to go and get it. The mage knew it was Sivan and it was the item he had ordered. It was also a good excuse to dig himself out from up under the mountain of books he was under.

Tearing away from the desk, he made his way down to the lobby of the tower, a smile on his face as he couldn't help but imagine just how it was going to work. His mind was running through the questions he was going to ask, wanting to know how it was going to work, how he bound the spirit Sivan mentioned.

Finally, he made it to the vestibule and came through the door, a smile beaming upon his face and a welcoming gesture as he approached. He spotted the blonde haired male waiting and rushed over. "Its good to see you Sivan, I hope you are well." he greeted, flashing a smile as his eyes looked over the man.

His eyes fell on the item he was holding and the excitement and anticipation were visible in his eyes.

Sivan heard the rush of excited footsteps first, then turned to see Val'Maranthy fast approaching, a smile on his handsome face. Len'Myren dropped a bow to the nobly born half-elf in the manner of Sol'Valen's court. He had only really seen anything of the court because his old master had been highly esteemed there. In any case, Sivan had endeavored not to embarrass the man and so it was a small skill he brought with him here, far from the Court of Princes.

"Lord Val'Maranthy," he said by way of greeting. He supposed this far from Sol'Valen, the nobility of elves was of little moment, but while he didn't feel as connected to Sol'Valen or Dalquia as he ought to, he didn't rightly feel connected to Kalzasi and its social norms either. Knowing lords and Tower mages were busy people, he immediately fished the box out of his bag and held it out to the dark magus. The box itself was just a simple wooden thing, meant to protect rather than present. Inside, the potion was padded against damage. The glass was thick enough that it oughtn't to break until it was cast against the cavernous floor of the Warrens, but neither Jacun nor Sivan wanted to start from scratch and so they made sure it arrived intact.

What Siorey Val'Maranthy did with it afterward was up to him.

He was in no great rush to quit the Tower of Lore, though it did make him nervous. The client might have questions, after all, and Sivan was the person best qualified to answer them. Master Jacun might be better qualified, but he wasn't present. He squinted slightly at the bottle. Perxy seemed to be taking a nap, or whatever the spiritual equivalent of that was. She had enough aether to keep her, and the rest of her payment would exchange when she completed her task. She had less compunction about it than Exael, and Sivan found the practicality he had learned from the wild spirits to be at odds with the celestial's sensibilities.

He was never quite used to be addressed so formally, even though his house was a minor noble house. It was more so the fact that his blood, his elven blood was that of high nobility among the Hytori, and it always threw him off, given he didn't like his immediate family at the current time. All he could do is smile and bow to Sivan.

When he was presented with the box Siorey's delight couldn't be hidden as he took it, running his hands over the wooden box before opening it. The flask was cool to the touch, and he could see the different aetheric contents within swirling around. His eyes locked onto Sivan, reaching out and taking his hand. "Come lets go somewhere more.....private, I rather not have unwanted eyes and ears in my affairs."

Sivan's hands were soft, smooth and Siorey couldn't help the slight blush that fell over his cheeks. He wasn't sure why, but the blonde summoner was intriguing to him, granted he rarely met other mages that weren't affiliated with the Circle. For now, however he could stifle this budding attraction he was feeling and focus on the task at hand. After some time the two mages found their way to Siorey's room, and with a click of the lock, the Black robe mage relaxed as he knew it was safe within the walls of his room.

"So tell me, was it difficult contracting the wild spirit? How long will they remain on task once I unleash them and the neutralizing agent? The spirit should turn on me if you arent there will it?" he fired off, removing the jacket to the robe as the Searing heat was high today. Walking over with a cup of water he waited eagerly for the answers to his questions as he continued to inspect the item he requisitioned.

He couldn't be certain, but he got the impression that his manners offended Val'maranthy somehow. It seemed as though he looked at Sivan funny, but perhaps he was imagining things. Spirits made more sense to him than people did most of the time. In any case, the young man took him by the hand and dragged him—at least until surprised feet picked up the pace—somewhere more private. It took him a moment to realize it was his room; surely a young lord, even far from Sol'Valen, ought to have something finer than this. There was nothing wrong with it, of course. Sivan's little house was no bigger, and more rustic.

Up close, he noted the younger man was shorter, as well, and quite pretty. Such details were noted, but stirred no reaction in him. He was aware that made him strange, but it was just one item on a long list of what made him strange. Val'maranthy was flushed a bit from the pace he had taken to get them here. Sivan was only glad he had been careful with the flask and that it hadn't fallen.

"Oh, no. I don't have much trouble with wild spirits on account of my speaking to those that abide on this plane. I asked around for the name of an air elemental of sufficient power and intelligence, and she's resting in the bottle with enough aether to last her a week or so. I told her about you, and so she's probably taking your measure right now. She knows not to invade anyone who stands behind you, so make sure your companions stay behind you when you throw the flash. She will make sure everyone in front of you inhales enough to be incapacitated—assuming there aren't too many more than you said there ought to be. She might look to you for a nod or some sign that she isn't missing someone, but once the task is complete, she'll return to me for the rest of her payment." He paused to consider. "She might make a fair amount of noise leaving. You never know with air elementals. But she won't spread the potion beyond the lungs of your enemies.

"She's wild, but she isn't malicious. If you attack her, she might retaliate, but I think she'll be more excited by the prospect of the payment waiting for her than wanting to cause you any problems."

He watched Val'maranthy look at the potion. Perhaps he was observing it via a Rune of Semblance. He wasn't rude enough to look. The man's jawline was Hytori. Sivan almost nodded to himself. He wondered what would make a young noble choose the black robes. Ambition wasn't a crime, but he had to wonder.

"Its good you had no trouble." he agreed, giving a smile to Sivan. Inspecting the flask further as the elf continued his explanation of the spirit and how she worked. Holding the Flask up to his eye he could see her, this wild wind spirit as she floated around within the glass container looking back at him.

"It wouldn't behoove me to attack her, and as long as she performs what is needed of her I will leave her be." he whispered in response to the mention of harm coming to the spirit. Siorey was no fool, he knew better than to offend the very being he summoned, it was just proper summoner etiquette.

A glance over to Sivan and he could see the other was inspecting him if only a little. It made him smirk a bit, but his focus came back to the potion. Then a question. "You seem to be rather skilled, both in personal magic and world magic, why not join the Circle of Spells. I'm sure they could afford you much more opportunity than some apprenticeship." he pondered toward Sivan.

His eyes finally lifted from the potion, and settled onto the other male, eyes of genuine curiosity fixated on Sivan. "I hope that question doesn't offend you, I know how apprentices can be when others talk about those they are learning from." he added, relaxing onto the bed as he awaited the other's response. The last thing he wanted to do was offend a potential friend and ally

It was pleasing to hear that Perxy would be in no danger from Val'Maranthy and his. He shifted uncomfortably at the praise, however. After a moment's consideration, he spread his hands wide and shrugged.

"I suppose I am a skilled summoner, but that is in large part due to my natural affinity for wild spirits. I am not so fluent with the other spheres, though I would like to be. As for the rest, my education might be broad, but I wouldn't say 'tis deep. I wouldn't know how to support myself as a summoner... so I am learning world magics to that end. My former master was teaching me artificing. When he died, he left me with a letter to bring to Master Jacun, who took me in as his apprentice in alchemy. I am not certain I have the mind for either, though, but we shall see where I am when I complete my apprenticeship.

"And that ties into the question of the Circle. It was never a question in Dalquia or Sol'Valen, and I came into Karnor already apprenticed... I suppose as soon as my apprenticeship is complete, I won't need the support of a Circle? I am not from Karnor so I have no particular feeling for it. At least I know I won't be beholden to anyone once my contract with Master Jacun is complete. I can stay or I can go and nobody can gainsay my decision. I don't play well with others, so I think I need that freedom. I wouldn't thrive in an order with rules and hierarchies." He paused, then was quick to add, "I don't judge anyone for being a Circle mage. It just holds no temptation for me."

He paused again, considering Siorey Val'Maranthy and the ambition that was his lodestone. Perhaps his ambition was power within his Order.

"Isn't ambition better supported by freedom?"
