"I'll ask her permission for you to stay in and play." He choked a bit on the last words, but said it quickly enough that his brain didn't catch up in time to stop but entirely. It seemed to amuse Eitan when Stefan's own playful teasing embarrassed himself more than anyone.

"It isn't a lie. We are hunting." The idea caused Stefan's instincts to awaken from their long dormant state and his smile adopted a note of ferality.

Giving the question consideration Stefan took a moment before answering.

"I think you should, perhaps bring it up casually that you're considering her as a match and then lead him into the idea as time passes. I assume you won't have a whirlwind wedding as I did, so there is time. I think," He swallowed so he could continue without undue emotion in his voice, "I think my springing it on him upset him. Made him feel like he wasn't important, perhaps. It was the last thing I wanted to do and I bollocksed it up badly. Everything happened so quickly, with the Expedition rushing up I felt I hate to, but he should have been the first person to know, even before I asked her."

He shrugged the shoulder not carrying the warm weight of Eitan's hand. "Hopefully he'll forgive me sooner rather than later. I would deserve it if he decided to make me wait, but I don't handle it particularly well."

Brenner knew that Stefan didn't bear up under guilt well, and if he was choosing to use that then it stood to reason his elder brother deserved it. The thought that Brenner might be jealous, or feel as though he was being out done didn't occur to Stefan. That Brenner might remain a perpetual bachelor wasn't outside the realms of possibility, or, at least, that he might refrain from martimoney until he was established enough in his career not to be away so often.

Shaking his head he said,

"Come, let me hug you before your new toy tells us both it's midnight and I've missed my chance. Then I really should be in my bed, we both should. The morning won't wait for us and it'd be just my luck to miss something dangerous and get myself killed because I didn't rest." He was jesting, a little, keeping it light, but there was a lot inside the words beyond their simple meaning.

While Eitan had come to respect Stefan's strengths, it was heartening to see a bit of a primal flare in his eyes at the thought of what they were about. It was a bridge, anyway, between his experience and that of his brother-in-law. Listening thoughtfully, he nodded. Sometimes it seemed from the outside that Brenner was a bit hard on his brother, but he didn't say anything. It was entirely possible that being hard on each other helped hone them into stronger men.

He laughed quietly, the stealthy hum of the Nachtherr urging him to be stealthy as well, whereas normally, he didn't worry much about making noise over the steady thrum of the Noble Gambit. Pulling Stefan into a rough hug, he clapped him on the back and ruffled the back of his hair.

"Feel free to tell Brynn you suspect my sister's nuptials inspired me to start looking," he said. "I'll tell him about Lucrece if there's a spare moment, and that way he'll know about her before there's truly something to know." He smiled. It was a simple enough thing, and hardly a deception. He did want Brenner to feel as though he was in the know. They had all been so busy, it hadn't occurred to him to prioritize his social life. And he had intended to bring her up several times, but their planning sessions had tended to end when they had drunk too much, and then his memory got faulty.

Or had he told them both and they had all forgotten?

A mystery.

"Best get back and wish him a happy birthday once more before it's over," he agreed. "May this year be our best one yet, the watershed to a new period in life and a greater future for Zaichaer."

Eitan's laughter always soothed Stefan now, where once it would have set him on edge. Once he would have assumed it was at his expense, one he would pay all unwillingly and resent afterward. He knew better now. Perhaps none of this man's laughter had ever been at his expense, but the laughter of others certainly had been, so it was nice to be able to hear the sound and feel only good things. It made Stefan want to laugh too, want to tell Eitan how beautiful he was and descend into a night spent close.

He did none of these things, but he did smile, his own quiet echo of the laughter. They embraced, rough and tight, as men did in public. As most men likely did in private as well.

"I will tell him you mentioned it, if you wish it. I think he would be more comfortable knowing first and then having me bring it up. Might soothe the blow to his pride of you knowing of my wedding before he did." Stefan hadn't meant for that to happen, but there had been no helping it. Eitan was Delia's brother, had not only been present for the proposal but had set up the meeting for it himself. "I'll give it a few days, surely with all the walking in the first days below the two of you will fall in together and have a chat."

Nodding at being sent off, knowing it was the right thing to do he gave another little smile, hopeful and a little affectionate.

"I'll do that. You rest, brother, and I'll see you on the morrow." Reaching out to give the taller man a final clap on the shoulder and squeezing it he slipped out the door into the corridor and made his way back toward his own shared bunk and the man within.
