Siorey had heard about the famed runeforger from several of the other black robes of the Circle. It was always a form of world magic that was curious to him but not something he would instinctively wish to learn until now that is. With everything happening and him preparing to steal the Stygian Eye he would need every edge he could find.

He had little knowledge of the art of runeforging, but he figured it wouldn't hurt to receive instruction from one everyone claimed to be a master of the magic. He figured this place would have a forge given that this runesmith supplied the Skyguard with armor and weapons. It meant that the royal family trusted their talent and thus they were the only suitable option in teaching him as well.

As he asked around about the runeforger one name seem to be on their lips, Talon Novalys. Just his luck, the crowned prince of all people had to be the one everyone was talking about. Why didn't anyone tell him that it was the prince? He was starting to believe they had set him up for failure, but that was not something he was going to cater to. After all, he had met and worked alongside Queen Sahfri, so this shouldn't be as bad.

In any case, he had to find the forge and get things underway. After some time traveling from the Circle to the Jeweled Arches, he finally located it, the black robe mage conjuring all of his confidence, and passed through the threshold of the shop. He was greeted by one of the employees, as they inquired about his visit to the forge. Removing the hood of his black robes he gave the clerk a friendly smile, well as friendly as he could manage of course.

"I wish to speak to the proprietor of this forge if that's possible. I'm willing to wait if he is not here." he requested, Dhasali standing behind Siorey, his steely gaze falling on the clerk before shifting to the other patrons within the building.

The Runeforger's Apprentice

Talon sat quietly within his office. The steady tick of a clock filled the silence as he scribbled upon a piece of paper within his schematic journal. Within the pages of that journal were written and drawn the full grimoire of some of his most accomplished works. It was but one of several volumes that he kept within the confines of his office that detailed his journey from neophyte runesmith to a distinguished master of the craft. He was continuing to take notes on a project that had been unfolding across the past year of his work in his workshop. At this stage he was nearing the final preparations but there were still some details to be worked out. Seated upon a mat spread across the floor, with his usual sofa moved off to the side, was his beloved partner and Core Bonded companion. Aoren was quietly meditating as Talon worked, the raven winged Kathar sifting through the events that had transpired over the past several weeks of their life together.

A comfortable silence existed between the two for in reality, the both of them could exchange thoughts just as easily as breathing. Such was the nature of their bond. While they were not actively doing so, the tranquility of Aoren’s meditation combined with the focus of Talon’s work made it so that both of them could continue on with this particular pattern for hours without interruption. But interruption it seemed, was imminent. The relative silence in the room was brought to an end with a knock on the door. The double doors of Talon’s office opened up then to reveal his apprentice.

“Master Talon.” Velkan bowed. Talon finished his thought as he wrote then set his pen down in order to give Velkan his full attention. He stared at his apprentice expectantly.

“There is a wizard of the Circle here to see you. A mage of the Black Robes.” Talon rose from his seat, curiosity at the forefront of his mind.

Interesting. We recently completed an order for the Circle. I wonder if this is a follow up to that. Thank you, Velkan. I will see to them.” Talon was halfway across the room when Aoren rose smoothly to his feet. The raven winged man fell into step beside him with a natural rhythm that accentuated the fact that the two of them spent a considerable amount of time together. He gave Velkan’s shoulder a squeeze before following the young man out of his office and onto the main floor of the Skyforge shop. It did not take long for Talon to spot the wizard in question. He wore the black robes of the Circle and while many would have found such a garb cause for being wary, Talon saw it as dealing with just another colleague. He was not a mage of the Circle, he did not bear the honor of such prestige, but he had worked closely with black robed mages his whole life. Ambition, power, a clear drive to put their own goals above the needs of others, these traits were true enough among those who wore the black. There was also a dedication to the art of magic that could not be denied. Genius and ingenuity existed among the black robes and while Talon did not agree with the whole of their philosophy, he could appreciate their unwavering resolve in studying all things arcane.

Talon was dressed humbly, as was often the case when he was working in his shop. Leather trousers that fit comfortably over his legs, tucked into knee high heavy leather boots. A plain linen shirt with leather bracers on his forearms, all to protect him from the heat and embers of the forge when he was working. His hair was tied back in his customary ponytail. The silver of both his eyes and his wings captured some of the arcane lights that shimmered around his more flashy artifacts on display.

I understand that you wish to speak with me, Magus.” Talon came to a stop just an arm’s length away from the mage. He folded his arms over his chest, offering the man a nod of his head.

He had seen the avialae before, been in the room with them many a time before, but this was something different. He was standing in front of the Prince of Kalzasi, Sahfri's son. For a moment, Siorey could only look at him as he inquired into Siorey's visit. Dumfounded, it took Dhasali to reach up and grasp his shoulder to snap the young prodigy out of it.

Clearing his throat, Siorey took a step forward. "I am Siorey Val'Maranthy, vassal house of house Briathos. I know you are busy your majesty, but I come to request to be taken under your wing and learn Runeforging. I am aware you are a supposed expert of the magical art of forging and as much as I would like to learn from one of my fellow circle mages, I don't trust them." there was a pause there, as he thought about the many who would love to see him fail or make a fool of himself.

"Seeing as I admire your mother, I figure I can trust you to teach me. I know it is presumptuous of me to ask this of you, but I simply can't take no for an answer." It was a gamble to be so forceful in his request, but Siorey figured that the worst thing that could happen is the Prince telling him no. "I will persist until you give me a favorable answer." he finished his words with a kneel before the Prince.

Dhasali accompanied him in his kneeling showing respect to the man. Siorey was not well versed in the art of social politics, but he did what he knew and hoped it would work.

Talon arched an eyebrow at the request being made of him by Siorey. He had not heard the young man’s name before but that was not unusual. As he was not a member of the Circle, there were plenty of its mages that he did not know by name. He observed as the young man and his companion both went into a kneel and while not unusual, it was not necessary within the confines of his shop.

“Please, stand.” The wizard wanted to become his apprentice. Prior to the arrival of Velkan, Talon may have accepted his proposition on the spot given he was a mage of the Circle. As it stood however, Talon was already pressed for time between his royal duties, running the shop and teaching Velkan. He would have to be more discerning in his acceptance of an apprentice. More than that, Talon was beginning to see a need to find a proxy who could manage the more arcane affairs of the establishment in his absence. He would have to sit down with Pyrra later and set up interviews with potential Masters who may be interested in working in his workshops.

“You come to me at an interesting time, Magus Siorey. I have one apprentice already.” Talon gestured to Velkan who was currently assisting a customer. “I find myself pressed for time without much room to accept another.”

His silver eyes examined both Siorey and his companion. Talon let out a breath as he formulated his thoughts.

“I will correct you on a single thing. I am not a “supposed expert”.” The feathers of Talon’s wings shifted slightly as he turned his gaze to the workshop that he had spent years building. Since he was a teenager fresh after his Warren March, Talon had thrown himself into the art of Aether Forging, the work of weaving enchantments into artifacts of simple and also great power.

“I am a Master of Runeforging and I have few equals in my field, even among the Circle. As such, I have come to expect a certain level of passion and attention to detail with regard to those who work in my workshops.” The degree of devotion that Talon spent creating what he did was most certainly a trait he inherited from his mother. His father respected the arcane arts but his mother lived for them. Talon had inherited that same level of love and awe.

“What qualifications do you bring with you?”
