Korvaelis Dahshida

There will always be a bittersweet reminder of Akiba Dahshida in Korvaelis’s everyday life. The home that was redesigned and turned into the deceased Avialae’s business was a constant reminder for Korvaelis. The Dahshida lord was dead, but his soul lingered in the home that was his dream and own doing. From the dark wood of the home’s walls to the concrete ground of the barn that he solidified, fragments of him were implemented throughout it all. There was also the child, Aki Dahshida, who was the spitting image of his father. Akiba’s blood pumped through the child’s veins. According to others, he even behaved like his father too. But the half-Druskai wasn’t so sure.

No matter his relationship with Akiba, Korvaelis kept a few reminders of the lord’s generosity close to his heart like everything else surrounding him wasn’t enough. The young man doesn’t wear it often, nevertheless, he keeps his engagement ring close by. It’s a signet ring if he’s being honest with himself, a gold ring with a few small gems that circle his initials while also including the Dahshida’s. The ring was surely a surprise and a creative way for him to announce their union.

Soon after their wedding and during their intimate moments, Akiba would give him a longbow made of ivory wood. The Dahshida’s emblem was carved into it, and he wasn’t sure if it was allowed, but on that same emblem were the first letters of their name coupled together. Korvaelis remembers thinking it was such a childish gesture; a longbow with their initials on it. But the thought was enough to make him feel grateful. The Avialae lord promised to teach him how to use it someday. He died before he could go through with the promise. So the longbow collected dust on a shelf in the house until today.

Instead of cherishing it, Korvaelis thought best he'd learn to use it. He raised hunting dogs. Still, he had never actually done any hunting himself. Korvaelis thought he owed it to the hunting dogs to learn so that he could better train them. Most importantly, the blue man owed it to his spouse to learn how to properly use the bow he bought so that they had something to bond over.

Korvaelis has never really held a weapon. Ever. The Grey Falcon Archery was known for selling bows and arrows, but he could’ve sworn they had somewhere for people to practice as well. Korvaelis just needed to build up the courage to walk in there, buy some arrows and get some targeting practice.

That’s all. Right?

While Kala had waited until she had true proficiency with her daggers to take on polearms, she had only been training with those for a season when she decided she ought to learn something with more range. She knew Indric would likely be able to train her sometimes, she wanted to get the basics out of the way on her own so she wasn't a charity case. No matter that she and her house were helping Indric and Ceran fund their mercenary company, she wanted to earn help.

It was only with all of her patience that she was able to stomach the long-winded advice of one of the employees of the Grey Falcon. She knew she was short and that she looked frail. It didn't matter; she was content to purchase a recurve shortbow. If she had any talent for it and developed her skill, she might commission a much better one from Kilvin's Forge. Surely Torin could magically enhance the range of a shorter bow. After all, when in doubt, use magic. When the salesman went to find a quiver and proper arrows, she was left alone for a while. She continued to peruse things until her eyes fell upon a blue-skinned nobleman.

While she hadn't met the man, she had done her homework and she had attended many social functions since arriving in Kalzasi.

"Lord Dahshida," she said with a graceful bow. "I haven't had the honor of meeting you. I am Kala of House Leukos. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." She paused. "Have you come to purchase or to practice?"

Korvaelis Dahshida

Working up the courage, Korvaelis walked into the shop. He winced at the sight of the interior, the weapons all about it, and the people that awaited indoors. There was a bit of anxiety building up in him as he did not feel worthy to purchase a weapon or anything related to it. Truthfully, he would have never purchased one himself if not for Akiba and the business. Growing up in Zaichaer as a regular civilian, a somewhat upper-middle-class one as well, he didn’t have to master any weaponry. Unlike Kalzasi where weapons and combat seemed to be embedded into the culture, thanks to the large men that run it, Zaichaer didn’t seem to push their citizens in that direction although the military often welcomed it.

He wasn’t raised to be a fighter either. When his brother took over as his guardian, education was his priority and Kodi swore a high education did not mix well with combat lessons. His eldest brother felt he would have to choose between the two and Kodi did not want to give him that option. The man-made it clear that there were better things for him to learn.

“Oh?” He moved farther into the shop. Korvaelis knew there was no other Dahshida in the room when he heard his name. Looking the room over again, he searched for the person that called for him. The blue lord would find a woman much smaller than himself speaking. As she introduced herself, he studied the woman to see if he could recognize her. Sadly, the blonde looked unfamiliar and in his opinion strange. Not in a bad way, she just looked different from others—unique. “It is unfortunate that we haven’t met before. I am pleased to meet you, Kala.” He answered sincerely. Korvaelis thought about her name and she was right. He’s never heard of her, however, the last name rang a bell.

House Leukos is just as mysterious as the house they’re under. The Briathos are like a close friend of the Dahshida family, he did his best to study them and their people. It was tedious and he worked hard to find information on them and their domain. Few houses were named and even fewer noblemen had been known. The Briathos’ land was shrouded by mystery. Aside from their last name, she knew nothing else about the Leukos family.

“Lucky me, someone had already provided a beautiful longbow and a few arrows.” Korvaelis pulled his weapon from behind him. He presented it to the lady with shaky hands. “I’ve come here for practice. But…I know little about how to use this weapon.” Just as fast as he whipped it out, Korvaelis put it away to give his new acquaintance his full attention.

“What brings you here? Forgive my ill manners, but I’ve heard of your house and those you swear fealty. You are a mage, no? I imagine weapons cannot compare to the magic you wield.”

Kala nodded and offered a quiet smile. He seemed a bit out of sorts, and she often felt that way among the nobility, though she hoped she hid it better.

"Better late than never," she replied, and gave his longbow her attention. She wasn't an expert, but it did have a graceful curve to it. "I've just purchased something more compact. My House is patronizing a small new mercenary company, and I am hoping their archer will give me some instruction, but I thought I might get a feel for it while I'm here as well. And your manners are fine; we are a small house leading quiet lives far into the mountains. We do value magic, which is probably why we swore to Great House Briathos, but it has its limits and we consider it wise to have more than one tool in the arsenal."

She smiled again.

"Would you perhaps like to practice a bit with me? I can assure you that whatever skills you have will outstrip mine or, if you are also just beginning, we will be in the same boat. I can even promise that I won't cheat with magic." Her smile widened.

Someday, she would surely be able to make her archery more efficient with a bit of aeromancy, but cheating now when she had no technique wouldn't help her in the long run, and she came from a family that played the long game as a matter of course. She would build her skills and only when she had achieved some mastery would she seek to give herself the benefits of her arcane arts. She never knew when her magic would fail her, but there was abjinurium, wards, and other things that would disrupt a mages abilities and she wanted to be effective even then.

Korvaelis Dahshida

"Always.” He said as a response before listening to her go on about her house’s business. He knew nothing about mercenaries or what exactly they do since his brother had never allowed him to dabble in it, but he assumed there’s something important if her house were to employ one. “You don’t want to look like you know nothing, eh? I get that,” he nodded, “magic does have its limits and so does a person. It’s a great idea to take up a weapon as well.” Korvaelis tried to stay on topic, but he found the Briathos and their vassals to be so interesting. “Forgive me once more for what I’ll say next, but this is the first time that I’ve met one of your…kind?” The question was more likely for himself than Kala.

“I’m just curious. What’s it like living out there? You’ve mentioned a quiet and peaceful life, so I’m assuming it’s nice. Right?” He was hoping she’d go into detail, however, if Kala chose to keep to herself he wouldn’t push it. She seemed like a kind woman and Korvaelis wasn’t one to make enemies or cross people.

“I’d love to!” His smile widened. “Trust me, you’ll outlast me. I have never held or even used a weapon before in my life. I can’t even recall a time when I’ve gotten into a fight or a sparring match. So don’t hold back and give me tips if you have any!” Korvaelis giggled at the mention of using magic to cheat. “Do you promise?” He extended his pinky as a sort of agreement contract. All for fun and giggles though. Korvaelis had never opened up to someone this fast before, but there was something about the tiny woman that just made him feel comfortable. It could be their status, which was equivalent in his eyes, or her outright kindness that made him so carefree and chattier than usual.

"My kind?" she asked. She could only assume that he meant someone of a house under the aegis of Great House Briathos, so she considered that briefly before answering.

"I don't know that I know much more Briathos business than the next person, actually. But the mountains are starkly beautiful out there. We are isolated, so we depend on each other when there's a problem. Kalzasi can often feel overwhelming... so many people going so many different ways. The noise, the light... You might be surprised how many stars you can see in our sky without all the lights of Kalzasi drowning them out."

But she fell quiet, not truly wanting to sell her home as a vacation spot. The people of Starfall liked being remote and connected to each other. She smiled again when he agreed to practice with her. Once the salesman returned with her quiver and arrows, he agreed to show them to the archery butt. Along the way, he jabbered on about things she would need to know: keeping bowstrings dry; how the compound bow would give her more "oomph" for its size; the etiquette of the range. When he wasn't looking, she shared a private smile with Korvaelis.

She didn't have to feign ignorance, so the man was only too happy to explain how to stand, how to hold the bow, how to nock the arrow, and everything. It was rather complete for a basic lesson in archery, but soon enough, she had the basics down enough that he left them to their own devices.

"That was a lot," she noted quietly to Korvaelis so the retreating salesman wouldn't hear her. "Now that we can get a word in edgewise... where were we? I suppose we can still manage a chat while practicing."
