Jacun's Alchemical Goods

For an alchemical supply and apothecary shop, Jacun's was rather tidy. But dark woods and a robust inventory made it seem close and cluttered. As such, Sivan spent a fair amount of time dusting and polishing, which weren't especially helpful in his quest for alchemical mastery, but they did take up some time when he didn't have anything he could work on up front. But today, everything was tidy and so he was scribbling in a notebook at the desk in the corner while a pot of tea steeped beside him. The place smelled of cardamom and clove, which was a boon as there were several pungent things in glass bottles that nobody wanted to smell.

His novitiate had given way to a true apprenticeship, and now Master Jacun had him planning out his future tools. With Sivan's luck, his exigent master would send him to the Stained Glassworks to prepare his own lyrethillium glassware. Jacun knew everyone and he assumed that he could pull favors with whoever ran that establishment. Just in case that was the plan, he had a primer on glassblowing open at the little desk-cum-work station. But he only read in small doses. He knew that if that was a challenge his master put before him, there was only so much he could prepare with books before actually learning experientially.

But he didn't want subpar equipment whenever he struck off on his own. Even the threat of that had him scriving pictographs that would need to be etched on the various pieces of glassware. Some were standard and copied almost directly from what he worked with in the master's workshop. Others were slight alterations, changes to make them fit how he worked. He supposed he would learn more about how he worked now that he was more advanced in skill.

Well down the rabbit hole, Sivan blinked owlishly up from his notes to the door when he heard the handle turning.

There were a few things that Carina appreciated in life above all. High perches, broken-in dance shoes, well-brewed tea, and cigarettes were among those few, and she had learned that there was an alchemical shop that could provide both of the latter. This was exceptional news, because she was far too busy to try every single shop in her hunt for one or the other. She especially liked to stock up on Kalzasern cigarettes and tins of tea before she returned to Zaichaer. The industrial smog of the city inhabited every sip of tea and every drag of a cigarette, and it was equal parts depressing and nostalgic. There were many times she was not in the mood to feel either.

The downside to this shop was that it also served a purpose as an alchemical supply, and Carina went to great effort to avoid being associated with any magic, even magic of the world and not cardinal runes. Perhaps it was more paranoia than anything, but she did not like to be in situations where she could be construed as a mage by any member of the Order that may have seen or recognized her. She traveled frequently enough that she couldn't imagine they didn't watch her.

Still, it was difficult to avoid magic in this city, and in case she were ever questioned about it, she would have a receipt to prove her fully legal purchases. She had no need for alchemical supplies anyway, and no one had requested she pick anything up on her trip. She opened the door and was immediately greeted with the smell of spiced tea, which was a good sign. The shop looked both cluttered and clean — also a good sign.

Carina almost didn't notice the man in the corner. Considering he was the only one in the shop at the time, she could only assume he worked there. She wandered around the store for a few moments, and then, finally, she approached where he sat, eyeing the teapot beside him.

"I've come for tea and cigarettes. Have I come to the right place?"

"You have," he replied softly, putting a bookmark in the glassblowing primer and standing up. He managed a faint smile, but dealing with people he didn't know was still a challenge. He gave good customer service, but he wasn't good at the false friendliness that some shop keepers seemed to have naturally. He indicated the doorway into the next room.

The room off to the side of the main shop was sitting area with a small table and several cushioned chairs. There was also a separate counter in there behind which was a wall full of tins with different sorts of teas and different pre-mixed blends. There was also plenty of raw ingredients for custom blends, though that was Jacun's bailiwick more than Sivan's. He could do some of the basics by now, but that wasn't the sort of alchemy he had come to study.

"We have a wide selection," he continued, indicating the wall. "If you want something custom, it might take a few days depending on how busy the Master is. Same goes for tobacco, though most of that is kept cool in storage. There are also some alchemically... ahh... augmented cigarettes available. Pre-rolled or loose if you want to roll your own."

At the counter, he picked up a menu with a neat list of blends of both tea and tobacco that were readily available without a wait, and he handed that to her.

"Would you like me to brew you a pot of something to enjoy here?"

He might not be much of a salesperson, but he had developed a bit of style when it came to brewing tea. He used magic, of course, but that was almost expected in Jacun's shop. The man was one of the more famous magi in the city, alongside Lyra at Ale'Ephirium, and even the Divine Shinsei at the Skyforge. For his part, Sivan enjoyed learning from such a respected master, but he didn't know that he wanted the fame that his master had. A black-robe like Siorey Val'Maranthy might, but then ambition was his lodestar and he already carried a noble surname.

"Tea would be nice, thank you. I'll drink anything. Surprise me." She spread her hands as she said this and smiled. "I'll take pre-rolled cigarettes, I like the ones with cloves." She paused for a second as she considered the challenge of buying a new blend. Carina wasn't exactly a picky consumer, and she'd try near anything, but she had to leave Zaichaer soon enough and she didn't want to return to the city with boxes of cigarettes she didn't really enjoy. Then she'd have to buy her regular blend in Zaichaer, and even those just weren't as good as she liked. Stopping was not an option, of course. If she wanted to keep focused on anything, cigarettes and coffee was her shortcut.

As the tea was prepared, she scanned the array of blends available on the menu. A convenient tactic she wished more places would use, because it listed both the name and what comprised the thing she intended on drinking or smoking. There were even blends that did not include tobacco at all, and one with cardamom and clove, and now she was wondering if she should try them juts in case she liked them more. Some of the blends for smoking read more akin to blends for tea. Kalzasern creativity was evident in everything. It disappointed her to return to Zaichaer after spending so much time around people who were not afraid to live.

"In any case, I'll take some of your most... regular cigarettes, and some of the clove cigarettes...can I try the clove and cardamom blend? The one without tobacco?" She smiled, a bit apologetic. "I'm not in Kalzasi for much longer. I like to stock up."

Sivan chose a popular blend of black tea, rosehip, lemongrass, cinnamon, chamomile, peppermint, jasmine green tea, anise seed, ginger root, orange peel, and orange oil. It was sweet with a bit of spice; she seemed like the sort of woman who would appreciate the contrast. He called his sprites to him to help with the preparing of the tea; they came enthusiastically, enjoying the dance he had taught them. Khal heated the water and Zin moved it through the air and into the pot. Sivan prepared a little tray with biscuits and such, sugar, honey, and other accouterments she might desire, and carried it over to a small table in the window where she could enjoy it and watch passersby.

"I'll fetch the cigarettes," he said. "Regular, clove, and the clove and cardamom blend."

He offered a smile that was a touch awkward, and then he disappeared into the back for a minute. It didn't take long; he knew where everything was.

Returning with three packs, he set them down on the table, as well.

"There are twenty in each pack, and you can just bring them upfront when you are ready to settle up. There's no rush here while you are enjoying your tea. If you want to smoke in here, I will just open the windows." And he would have Nut keep a steady but unnoticeable breeze blowing the smoke out so it wouldn't accumulate and damage any of the goods. Jacun was particular about such things, and Sivan was learning how delicate alchemical reactions could be.

"And do let me know if there's anything else I can help you with." He offered another slightly awkward smile. Someday, he hoped to be better at dealing with people, but today was not that day. He supposed he would just go back to studying the theory of glassblowing since he was going to have to figure it out on the job if things went the way he assumed they were.
