The End of the Road
1 Searing 122

The goblin squinted and jutted a long chin to the west. It was the only response Ilphas’s question would get. The Siltori smiled and nodded as he gathered the pitifully small bundle of belongings he had come with from within the rickety cart. Whether the goblin disliked him or was simply unsocial was still a mystery. Nevertheless, Ilphas thanked him in common and set off down the Main Street in the direction the goblin had indicated. His question had been “Which way to the Tower of Lore?”

It was the question he had been asking since he left home. He had asked in the caravans of Auris, he had asked in the grim wastes of the Deadlands. He had asked in rain and shine, cold and heat. This day his path and had found him in Kalzasi, and for the first time the answer had been more than just a general direction. Though his belly ached and his feet were raw, he smiled as he looked out at the magnificent guildhalls of the Gilded Expanse. Nowhere, however, could he see the famed height of his destination.

He shouldered the small bag that amounted to his entire worldly possessions and carefully tucked the wooden practice sword into his belt next to the hilt of the pact blade. A pinkish mass of tentacles about the size of a man’s head writhed up from the cart and floated to hover near Ilphas’ shoulder. From within the mass a large milky eye blinked open and examined both him and the area.

“The residue of your small learnings litter this place.” Erishti said in his head. “Your kind need such a physical regime to master their pursuits.” The tone was neither dismissive nor rude, despite the nature of the words. Ilphas did not take offense. The eldritch spirit was far removed from the social norms of mortals, he had learned in the time they had been bonded.

“We are physical creatures and the skills we need sometimes reflect that. These are world renown craft masters, my friend.” He said aloud as they walked. He gestured ahead. “Here some of the most learned mages in the world live.”

“Narrow,” Erishti muttered in his head. “So narrow.”

Ilphas was no longer paying attention to the conversation though. A pair of individuals in white were passing with both their faces bent towards a scroll of heavy parchment, muttering in what seemed to be a heated debate. The din of sound in the busy Gilded Expanse ensured none of their words could be heard, however. Ilphas saw that the parchment bore the circular patterns of arcane runes. An excited thrum beat through his chest and he turned a smile on Erishti. Surely these were two of the famed White Robes who inhabited the Tower proper.

The spirit was no longer next to him however. Erishti was examining a small brown dog with interest while the beast whined and shivered. “Erishti, come on. Leave the dog alone.”

“This one does not respond.” Erishti muttered in his mind, disappointed.

Ilphas laughed. “What a spectacle it would be if she responded.”

They continued, Ilphas striding along eagerly. Asking around lead them to a small pavilion on a lake. Built into the pavilion of marbled stone was a blue gem. The sight made Ilphas smile. The words of the white robed mage he had met so many seasons ago came back to him.

“Eat of the bush to enter.” Ilphas stepped with light Siltori grace across the man-made walkway that was flanked on both sides by the still mirror sheen of the lake. Light filtered down from some hidden, arcane source onto the most lush and beautiful berry bush. The fruit glistened and hung heavy on the winding branches. Ilphas plucked one of the berries and popped it into his mouth with little hesitation. He had just enough time to taste the burst of sweetness before he felt an arcane jolt as he was transported from the humble pavilion.

Bright light and wind assaulted his face as Ilphas stumbled forward onto a massive sprawling bridge in the sky. Decorative shrubs lined the edges and a huge arch pulsed with blue light in the distance. Erishti popped into existence next to him and gazed about silently. Apparently the shift had not warranted any comment. The height of the Tower was truly staggering. It stood proudly against the sky as the tallest structure the young Siltori had ever seen in his life.

Ilphas craned his neck to see the top of the tower. It rose high into the sky. The dark indistinct silhouettes of flying vessels blinked in and out of sight near the top. Below the lofty reaches of the tower sat a massive blue jewel radiating Aether. It was the most powerful display of magic Ilphas had ever seen in his fifty years of life. A few others were walking along the bridge towards the blue archway.

A red robed creature strode past with a small golden owl resting on her shoulder. Both were peculiar. The creature seemed a mix of a woman and a tiger. She wore the red robes some of the Circle and an inked tattoo of a panther’s head over a burnt orange sunburst on her chest. The fine white hairs of her chest covered it slightly but the dark ink shone through.

“A family relic.” She said in a light amused tone, drawing his attention up from it. Yellow, feline eyes danced with mirth as they penetrated him. “New to the Tower?” She asked and pointed a hand tipped with black claws towards the blue arch. “You’re looking for the Ascertanium, inside.” She continued on, not looking back at him. The owl hooted and swirled lazily around her.

Ilphas watched for a few moments before setting out after her. She disappeared ahead of him through the arch with no sound or reaction from the blue magic. When he came upon it Ilphas paused a moment before stepping through.

The interior of the Tower was spacious and ornate to a point that left the young foreigner stunned. His father was a well-off Runeforger, a man of magic and privilege. Yet he had never exposed Ilphas to such amazing feats of magic. A variety of individuals walked to and fro in various dress, a true hodgepodge of culture and race. Ilphas spent some time slowly circling the entry hall and then inquired with passing individuals about the Ascertainium. All the while he made his best effort not to seem too out of place. Eventually he found success and stood outside the wholly underwhelming Ascertanium office.

It was a simple room with a tired looking clerk behind a large desk. The clerk wore black robes and busied herself reading a scroll. When Ilphas entered she looked up and raised a pencil-thin eyebrow. “New applicant?” She asked in a low voice.

“Yes.” Ilphas responded. “I’d like to study here.”

She made a soft noise of ascent as she rummaged in a drawer of papers. “So an unaligned student or are you going to attempt the Trial of Judgement?” She asked, finally looking up at him again.

“The…the what?” The smile on Ilphas’ face lapsed into a confused frown.

She blinked up at him. “Not from Kalzasi are you?” She asked, not unkindly. “The Circle of Spells and the three orders of the Black, Red, and White robes are the stewards of the Tower and all its knowledge. To join the Circle one must pass the Trial of Judgement. You should not attempt it unless-“ Her eyes found Erishti, who had just followed Ilphas through the door and turned its multitude of eyes on her curiously. “-you have a Cardinal Rune. You have a Cardinal Rune?”

Ilphas smiled. “Two actually.” He held up the katana under his arm. “I also have the Rune of Reaving.”

“What’s your name?” Valius asked, eyes flickering from the sword to his face. Her gaze sharpened and interest followed focus.

“Ilphas d’Yllaric.” He responded. “I wish to be a White Robe.” He added, thinking of the goal that had brought him all the way here.

She nodded. “So, you do want to attempt the Trial of Judgement, well you will need years of study before that.” She grinned and opened a ledger. “First step is the interview which unfortunately we’re booked out until the day of Orientation except for…” She began to run her finger down a list of handwritten names and dates. “Two days from now, at noon?” She winced as she looked up at him. “I only have two slots for then also. Otherwise you will have to wait a season to reapply.”

She seemed to think the short notice was a bad thing, but Ilphas felt the lightness of his money purse and did not relish the idea of trying to pay for lodging in the city for a whole season before he could start his studies in earnest. “That will be fine. Do I just return here?”

She began to write and answer him at the same time. “Yes, two days from now at noon return. I'll ask you a few questions, if you are deemed worthy, you will be assigned a college and a bed!“ She pointed to a closed door behind her. “Then eventually you will be able to go through there to attempt the Trial, swear the Oath, and sign the contract. Then you can write home and tell the parents to call you Adept Ilphan.” She gave a sideways grin.

“Ilphas.”

“Right.”

“So do I need to bring anything?” He asked.

“Just truthful answers.” She raised her chin and stared. “Best be equipped for whatever.”

Ilphas thanked her and left the Ascertainium, giddy with excitement.

The Spellgate, as Ilphas learned the entryway to the sprawling Tower of Lore was called, beckoned tantalizingly as Ilphas forced himself to leave after his meeting. He needed to get a head start on finding a place to sleep for the next few days. It was with a sense of longing that he finally stepped away from the berry bush back into the now mundane bustle off the Gilded Expanse. After experiencing the majesty of the Tower of Lore what could a few guildhalls do to impress him. With thoughts still swirling around the Spellgate and the idea of the Trial, Ilphas and Erishti made their way through Kalzasi to find a suitable inn.

Despite his experience, the city did instill a sense of wonder in him. It had been so long since he had been in a village larger than a crossing of two highways. The finely crafted guildhalls and the magnificent mansions did instill a sense of wonder for their foreign style and master craftsmanship than nothing else. The Carpenter’s guildhall was made entirely of ornately carven wood and bore statuettes and friezes built into the windows and front gate. Ilphas saw a mansion with a high tower that allowed for strange winged people to land. He watched one such man with a leather scroll case under one arm flutter to a stop on the ledge. The man shook out his ash grey wings and stepped inside the tower.

Not for the first time that day was Ilphas left with the feeling that he was but a small fish in a very big pond.

The inn they chose, The Lazy Cat, was comfortingly humble. It was a small narrow building squeezed between a larger storehouse for a merchant and a bustling brewery. The common room was a long and narrow thing, but it had well made furniture and the hearth was large and inviting. The proprietor, a burly woman named Cadrice, smiled invitingly and took his money eagerly. He was shown to a small room on the third floor with a tiny window about as wide as his shoulders and a cramped but soft bed.

Erishti drifted over to the window and gazed down at the street with most of its eyestalks.

“What do you think?” Ilphas asked, setting his sword and practice sword down against the wall and dropping his pack onto the floor at the foot of the bed.

“I think many things.” Erishti replied placidly.

“Of the Tower of Lore I mean.” Ilphas said, impatient with the spirit’s cryptic ways.

“It holds many meals, many secrets.” Erishti responded without hesitation, only deigning to turn one small eyestalk back to glance at him.

“That’s what I was thinking also.” Ilphas laid on the bed and stared up at the ceiling, thoughts lost in the Trial to come in the future that would make him a White Robe.
