Three days into the jungle, things weren’t going quite as perfectly as Imogen might have hoped.

Imogen had relied heavily on the suggestions of the people at the trading post for a list of necessities, and so had wisely procured:

  • Water
  • Food
  • A canoe
  • A lantern
  • A tent
  • A compass
  • A guidebook
  • Firestarters
  • Rope
  • Water Trap
  • First aid
  • Bug repellant

Of those items, the lantern, canoe, water and food were still holding out (though the canoe was as yet untested). Every other item had proven either insufficient to the tasks she needed them for, or had been stolen.

Dear Carina,

Though I have left the dark jungle behind, it has grown more treacherous and fearsome in turn. When I first entered the jungles, I confess that my fears centered primarily on the great beasts of this land, such as the primal beasts or thunder lizards. In the last two days, I have come to understand that the worst fiends are those smaller phages which fill every dark corner of this place.

From my time in the forest bunker, I thought I was familiar with every tiny scourge which walked, crawled, buzzed or flew. Ticks, and mosquitos, and deerfly- they’re nothing. They’re Raella’s gentle kiss. They’re the jubilant embrace of a kind and bountiful nature for her children, whom she loves absolutely. But Ecith- it is the elder child, the repository of every mistake and cruelty which kind Nature eventually shed.
.
Today I ran into a hive of mosquitoes the size of cats. I cannot overemphasize this; I exaggerate their size not a whit, and their horrible sharp mouth parts called to mind nothing so much as rapiers. I can only assume that if the trauma from getting bitten by one of those doesn’t knock you flat out, exsanguination would be fatal in seconds.

The smaller bugs are here too, of course, and this is where I have little choice but to venture upon customer complaint. This insect repellant, as it turns out, is effective against some of the insects here. But half of a thousand glittering bites is still five hundred attacks, and I’m doing the makers a great kindness by assessing its efficacy so highly.

In truth, my method of dealing with this has been… unsustainable.

Imogen continued down the path, puffing gently from exertion.

It wasn’t her load; or, at least, not just her load. Moving quickly was one reasonably effective way of deterring a large number of the phages- although most of these insects could fly quickly, the swarms tended to fall behind after any amount of sustained movement. The pace and the gear, combined, were a respectable reason to be tired, but that wasn’t really it either.

It was the shield strapped to her back, radiating a thin wave of argent fire.

The nova-flame of Ysadrin was the one power available to Imogen Ward which none of Ecith’s predators or insects were likely to have encountered in their evolution, and it had proven extremely effective in warding off the larger, more persistent creatures like the mosquitoes, or the hand-sized jumping ticks.

Effective, but it presented its own set of problems. First, the nova-flame emitted heat just like ordinary fire; not enough to burn the Sunsinger’s skin through the opal scales glittering against her neck and the back of her arms, but enough to raise the already-oppressive heat to truly dangerous levels. Through focus and force of will, Imogen had lowered the Pact weapon’s output to minimal effective levels, but it wasn’t exactly comfortable. It was quite possible that a human, with their more intensive metabolism, would have fainted dead away.

Second, of course, it drained her aether and will at a steady clip. Imogen much preferred short, intense bursts of aether use; she knew she could recover from that quickly. This long, low-level use of a pact weapon was begging for a disproportionate cost when at last she was forced to dematerialize it.

But until she found a place with insects small enough to be foiled by her treated mosquito nets, she had little choice but to soldier on. Being drained was dangerous, but much to be preferred to contracting any of the deadly fevers buzzing angrily behind her.

It was likely that keeping the shield on her back saved Imogen’s life from the bugs. It was certain that it saved her life from what came next.

One moment, Imogen was trudging through the jungle, mildly disoriented from the heat and broken light from the canopy and constant chattering and chirping above. The next moment, the jungle fell silent, and only the squelching of her boots and the low crackle of the silver fire behind her seemed to exist.

The young Sunsinger had only a moment to notice and wonder at the silence before the entire world changed.

First, came a great roar which seemed to originate inside her own eardrum. It started low, distant, and then the pitch rocketed upwards, and it felt as though gravity had simply stopped. She felt herself floating, for the briefest of seconds, a mild breeze at her back.

Then the breeze resolved into a sledgehammer, striking her shield with more force than any other blow she’d ever felt. Her Pact shield blazed with angry silver light as the force of the blast blew the nova-flame sideways for dozens of feet in every direction, but even the mystic symbol of Imogen’s will could only soften the blow. The shock picked her up and sent her tumbling wildly down the road, rolling over with such force that she hit the ground at least three times.

Imogen laid there, sprawled on the road, ears whining. She wasn’t sure how long she laid there, but when at last she came to her senses and opened her eyes, it took several more seconds for her vision to finish cohereing. And then she saw it.

It was easily twice Imogen’s size- maybe even more, fifteen or sixteen feet from foot to head. The entire creature clattered as it slowly approached, clearly trying to assess the situation to see if Imogen had been reduced to Imo-juice by its initial strike. It stalked forward, stopping only when it got close enough to be sure that she was still moving.

For a moment, the huge lizard cocked its head curiously, like a dog might when it encountered something new. Then it reared back, tail lying flat across the ground, and opened its mouth as wide as it would go. It kept the pose for a moment, then, curiously, began to hiss. Quietly, then louder, and louder. The air around its mouth seemed almost to boil.

Imogen stared stupidly at the absurd sight for almost a moment too long before her eyes got very big.

”Oh… oh no, no, no fuck, no-.”

As the enormous lizard reared in place, its mouth suddenly shone with light, the aetheric reaction catalyzed within completing. The earth around the monster's feet and tail shook as they absorbed an impact, and a shockwave blasted into the trees on both sides of the jungle trail. An invisible, inexorable column of compressed air and sound tore directly at Imogen's stupid, blinking face.

Had Imogen reacted the moment she saw the shockwave, it would have been far too late. Thankfully, her battered brain worked out the nature of the attack just before the creature executed it a second time. With a panicked surge of strength, Imogen’s will tore the shield from her back, spinning it around to interpose it completely between the blast and her body.

The nova-flame flared as the shield intercepted the attack, the sunfire shredding the aether and blunting the colossal force. Even with all her focus, however, the shield was blown backwards into her, pressing painfully against her arms. The sound and fury of the attack died, and this time Imogen was still fully aware of her surroundings.

Lifting the shield, the Orkhan warrior watched the monster land lightly on its feet, then examine her again. When it realized that the Ork’s glowing shell had somehow survived its attack, the creature shifted from one foot to another, evaluating its options.

~~~
The monster was a predator, but it was a stalker. Its many scales were armor, but they also absorbed sound, rendering the creature capable of passing silently even as it brushed through plants and small trees. When it got close enough to prey, it unleashed its singular attack, which would either kill by itself or leave them so helpless and disoriented that it could effortlessly finish them.
But this little Ork was getting to her feet now, clutching the glowing shell. Its attack had worked once, but not a second time, and the sound waves which it stored in its tail were not unlimited. So what play- fight or flight?
The Ork swayed unsteadily, and the monster’s attention refocused on her. No, she was small and weakened. It was time to eat.
~~~

Imogen watched the monster stare at her as she clambered to her feet, summoning her partisan to lean against. It seemed to be waiting for something- or perhaps it was simply confused that she was still moving? Either way, perhaps it would make a break for-

The creature suddenly broke from its apparent trance and charged, moving down the path towards her at great speed. Marvelously, it made not a sound as it did so, heavy footfalls shaking the earth without a single “THUD”, scales clattering violently against each other without any audio cue.

Well, okay. Her magic shield wasn’t going to help with this one. She lacked either the physical or magical strength to stop that much mass. Instead, she waited for it to get uncomfortably close then threw herself to the side, wincing as she bumped all the bruises and scrapes she had accumulated from the monster’s initial blast. She rolled once over her shield, then let it go, unwilling to risk pulling her shoulder in the middle of a fight.

As she expected, the creature’s inertia carried it past her. She wouldn’t get another chance.

While the beast charged past, Imogen hurled her spear after it. It was, objectively, an awful cast. Imogen wasn’t all that good at throwing a spear from a standing position; while lying on the ground, you got what you got.

Thankfully, the pact spear forgave her this, and chose to jet forward after the monster. When it began to slow, the magic spear darted underneath the monster’s undercarriage, seeking an unarmored spot to hit. Imogen chose to try for a leg joint, driving the spear into-

The scales. Even a lightly-armored patch of the monster proved too much for the partisan, which did nothing more than crack a few of the silent plates off the beast. Imogen’s spear rolled into the brush.

Really?! How in hell was THAT fair?

The monster finally skidded to a stop, then rounded on Imogen again. This wasn’t the kind of fight it preferred, but she could almost see the calculation in its eyes- why not keep going? What was she going to do? She couldn’t even hurt it.

Its eyes swept over Imogen’s shield, which was still lying on the ground several feet away. With casual, malicious intent, it shifted from clawed foot to clawed foot. And then, it opened its mouth to roar.

Imogen Ward stared at the monster for a moment, then grinned. She opened an empty palm.

~~~
The monster, I should say, was far too large and powerful for me to defeat. Perhaps if I could have cut a tendon, but the creature’s scales were the most complete defense I have ever witnessed. Even if I could have persuaded it to stay still, I think it would have taken me several swings to harm its legs.
But while the beast was surprisingly intelligent, it was not a witch. Its strange ranged assault relied on the conversion of sound and momentum into force, a delicate aetheric process which I must assume is a natural kin to the workings of Kinetics. At the moment of transition from passive to active aetheric force, however, the creature was naturally vulnerable. So I threw my sword into its mouth and gave it as much fire as I could manage.
How did that go? Well, I wrote this afterward! I’ll bring you a scale as a souvenir, if I manage to survive the trek to the river.
With love,
Imogen.
Imogen finished her diary entry and closed the book, giving her writing surface a pat. The monster lay in the path, entirely unconscious, loose scales scattered in every direction from the force it had accidentally unleashed inside its own mouth. She could only assume that its own scales had helped absorb the blast, or its skull ought to have shattered.
She had considered killing the thing, but it was a majestic monster, after all. It was possible that its own injuries would render it food as soon as she continued on her way, but, well… that was nature, wasn’t it?
Imogen stood and stretched, wincing again. Bruises, yes, and some cuts from flying debris left by the two explosions she’d taken head-on. The familiar ache in her left arm might be a fracture, though she hoped it wasn’t. But worse was the drain on her will. It had taken her half an hour of pain to dematerialize her pact weapons, and the shield trick was well beyond her for now.
Thankfully, the sonic catastrophes unleashed by her sleeping enemy seemed to have driven most of the larger flies away. She supposed she had better find a place to make camp.
Someplace far away from this thing.
