Urs is a wisp of flesh and bone. His face is all sharp angles with dark freckles splashed across his too-pale skin. His hair is a cropped mess of black and his eyes are hazel.

Urs is a perfectionist. His focus is driven to the point of obsession especially when it relates to whatever current fancy holds his interest.

HISTORY

Urs was raised by a woman called Mother.

Mother enjoyed stories. She twisted the tales she loved most into parables of her own. In a world that already suffered gods and worse, Mother invented a new mythology to torment and teach Urs. The tragedy of the hero Daphne warned against the double-edged sword of curiosity. The legend of the Underside taught rudimentary medicines and botany. The epic of Lyle and Foster explained the arrogance of the divine.

Mother was a healer, a witch, or a heretic, depending on who you asked. She taught Urs to mold flesh with tools engraved with pictographs and explained the soul's memory. She carved glyphs into his skin that burned his eyes with magic and showed him the doors to other worlds. She turned Urs from son to apprentice.

Urs watched as Mother worked. She taught him to pinch skin with black threads and which runes enhanced their practices. She taught him to See faults and fractures. She taught him which names were in her debt and which were dangerous. Mother promised to make him her legacy. She promised to make him a witch.

And she did.

Urs spent the next few years apprenticed to Mother. He wrote down her stories. He saw her patients when she busied herself with greater worries. He prepared the offerings, the rituals, to attract the right kinds of spirits and ward off wrongs. He did what Mother asked and he did it well.

And then one day Mother grew sick. Urs brewed potions and cooked herbs into tinctures. He whispered spells over candles and burned effigies in the hearth. Nothing helped. Urs could only watch as Mother grew weaker. He watched as she died.

And then, there wasn't anything to do, but continue on.
