53rd Searing, 123

Torin had taken all the precautions that Aurin had demanded of him and added a few of his own. Early in the previous season, he had begun working on aether seeds with the help of Sivan, as well as a number of their other friends, depending on what type of seed they wanted.

Semblance had seemed the best rune to begin with, as both of the creators possessed the rune and it was the least likely to be dangerous if anything went wrong. After a little trial and error, they had learned how to impart different levels of the magic into a seed and, in late Glade they had a tiny orchard growing with one tree for each level of Semblance they possessed. Timon had been eager to try out the fruit, even if Torin had insisted that Kala be there in case he needed healing. Aurin and Sivan had also been there, through what Torin believed to be a combination of protectiveness and professional curiosity. The Novice level fruit had affected the apprentice about as expected, though Timon had described a significantly lessened feeling of connection with the magic than all those present felt to their runes. This made sense as it was not something etched into the soul, but many notes had been taken. So many, in fact, that they had been forced to wait the week and do the experiment again for Timon to have time in the hour that the fruit lasted to actually try out any of the things he had wanted to.

While they continued to experiment, both with Timon moving up to Apprentice and then Journeyman levels of the fruit over time, Torin and Sivan had seen the success as reason to continue. Summoning was the next obvious choice, but the orchard now also included Negation, Masquerade and, importantly, Elementalism.

Once he had spoken to Aurin about obtaining a second rune Torin had spoken to Kala about it and also asked if she, or Kaus, might lend their ability to the creation of Elementalism Aether Seeds. While he wanted to have most of the known runes in the orchard eventually, this one in particular he moved to the front of the line so that, in addition to taking lessons in the theory with Kala, he could experience what using aether in the new way the rune would allow him actually felt like. There was a possibility he wouldn't like it, and also one that, if his soul were to react badly to the introduction of a new rune, it might show when he ate the aether fruit.

So, there had been days in the valley in which one or both of the twins had come to show Torin how to use the basics of Elementalism while one or more of The Whispers worked with Timon on his Semblance. Torin was a little worried that one of the little coven might just scribe the rune onto his first apprentice themselves if he didn't at least show willingness to move toward doing it himself. Thinking about doing so brought a visceral understanding of what Aurin had gone through with him starkly into focus, but Timon was not Torin and the odds of Semblance causing anything like what he'd gone through were tiny.

Working with the fruit himself he could see what Timon had meant about how feeling connected to the magic, but still, it allowed him to get a feel for what it would be like. Fire came to him immediately, swirling around him in a tiny mote that brought to mind a faithful hound that hadn't seen its master in far too long. The other three basic elements came a little slower, but they still all felt right to him. Air, Water and Earth were all things he made use of in his work on a daily basis, so while Fire felt like a friend he'd been missing, the others felt like comfortable acquaintances that he would get to know better over time.

Aurin came sometimes to watch him and when Sivan was in the valley to check on the Spirits he'd left to aid the villagers or work on the harvest golems, they took a little time to see how the spirits reacted to the more raw use of their elements. It was fun, for both of them, and the spirits. Torin couldn't remember the last time he had simply played with magic for its own sake and it felt good inside him, like stretching muscles that were always only used for work.

Now it was the middle of what should have been the hot season, Torin's favorite time of the year. The valley was producing crops due to the intervention of several mages, and he had arranged a lull in his work in which he might spend several weeks, if they were needed, recovering. Returning to the city, while it had a special place in his heart, was becoming harder and harder as his much larger workshops were completed but he knew it would be safest to be at Cintamani Pavilion where he could be looked after and trained as much as his hosts had time for.

Kaus had been the one to "donate" his elemental magic. He had mastered it before Kala had, so potency was not an issue; more importantly, Kala was concerned that her divine overtones might be more than should be grown in the orchard, even though there was a possibility that it would pass on to Torin when she initiated him.

Sivan had sent along a calming tea, the which they were drinking now. A steady mind would help ease him into his new runic initiation. Thankfully, he and Aurin had agreed to leave Torin in her capable hands. Their worry might spill over and upset Torin when he needed to be focusing on the new patterns of power working through him.

They chatted about the valley, about magic, and such. Kaus signed, sprawled out on a divan.

"...and just because the cold doesn't bother us doesn't mean we don't enjoy the heat. So that was something Solunarium has on Karnor."

Kala laughed. "And you were far from your responsibilities. That didn't hurt either."

Kaus pretended to swoon.

"Well," Kala began, setting her empty teacup down, "these will be your rooms while you are going through whatever threshold sickness you might have. Do you have any questions or concerns before we begin?"

The room was already equipped to deal with many of the possible side effects, though she could as easily leach fever heat from him with her own magic as apply cooling compresses. It helped that she was also medically trained, though; she could see him holistically, as flesh as well as soul. Kaus sat up straighter, knowing he might be called to help, though Kala knew what she was about. Initiation always came with risks, but they had both been classically trained; they knew how to minimize those risks.

Torin would be fine.

Kaus was more worried about Timon trying to work him into giving him a rune without Torin's permission, the little scamp.

The smith was nervous, but he also felt prepared. The theory, he understood and even had some experience working with the power itself. There wasn't a better person on this plane to gift him the rune and ensure that any aftermath caused by the gift did not damage him. A smile landed on Kaus as he was calmed and reassured by the Avialae's dramatics.

Sitting with his friends felt normal, even the knowledge that they would be employing strong and possibly dangerous magic wasn't actually unusual for Torin and Kala to do together. Taking a cup of tea when it was offered he sipped tasting Sivan's work in a way that he was sure he would know even if it was in a line up of other teas. They chatted, mostly the twins talking and Torin being genuinely interested, which was also utterly normal for the three of them when they shared a meal.

When the tea had been drank and Kala explained that he would be staying there he looked around and nodded. Like every part of the Pavilion he'd been into the room was comfortable and pleasant. He did take a moment to center himself and examine his thoughts when she asked if he had any questions. They twins gave him time to consider but in the end he shook his head.

"No. I think I'm ready." His eyes moved from the far away place they had been to Kala's face and the little smile he offered looked sure. "I am ready. But,"

Scooting forward in his chair he reached out and took one of her lovely hands gently in his big rough one,

"I know I've said it but, thank you. By all rights, almost everything I have is due to you in some way. I can't ever earn what you've done for me, today or any day before, but I am grateful. I always will be."

Kala smiled softly at him; Kaus' smile was broader. Torin could feel the resonance of their bond in the air. The twins were distinct personalities, but they complemented each other, and it would be difficult to imagine one existing without the other.

Kala squeezed his hand.

"You were a diamond in the rough, my friend," she said warmly. "I am only glad we met and that we recognized that. I can count on one hand how many vassals my mother has, and more than that, you have become our... my friend. Family, even. A fellow steward of our lands and shepherd for our people. In the tawdry terms of coin, you have surpassed my hopes for a return on investment, and... personally... You are one of the few people who know me - truly know me - with wings and divinity and all. You help to keep me grounded in my mortality. I know it will fall away eventually, after lifetimes, but I do not want to be one of the distant, aloof gods. I want the people to benefit from my mortality."

She squeezed his hand again. "In any case, you make me a better person."

Kaus laughed quietly, though his voice was husky as if he might also be crying. His eyes were shining, anyway.

"But if you want your runes to be a matched set, has Aurin promised not to seek vengeance upon my sister for seeing you with your pants off?" he joked. Kala colored, then she cleared her throat.

"He seems more the sort of man who would like to show off his lovers," she noted, then patted Torin's hand before pulling away so she could stand up and uncork the spellwright's ink, check the nib of her quill. Kaus continued to grin.

The connection between the twins was something that, had he taken the time to study it consciously, Torin would have categorized as similar to the way he felt raw aether connecting. It was simple, fundamental and unquestionable.

The smith flushed at the compliments and at the mention of his elevated status, but he held Kala's hand back firmly. It had been her declaration that she intended to hold on to her personhood and humanity as long as she could manage that had finally settled Torin back into a sense of ease with his friend. He would always respect her, but, for a time, he had not known how to be in her presence. How did one act when standing (or sitting) before a divine being? Kala was that, but she had been that for only a very little time and she had been herself a great deal longer. Someday she might be the sort of goddess that one feel on their face before, but that would take time, likely more time than Torin had left in his life even should he live a full century. So he also had time, probably all his time, to just be her friend and enjoy their connection. That he might be of aid to her, had already been of some, was a gift and he felt like a better man for being able to give it.

The color in his cheeks, having faded from mild to nearly gone rushed back with a vengeance as Kaus mentioned the location of his only current rune. Unable to form any reply he simply shook his head and lifted his shirt to his collar bone. Not looking at Kaus and only almost looking at Kala he wrapped the hand not holding his shirt around the curve of his ribs on the right side.

"Here, please?" He would accept it elsewhere if Kala thought it better but he had no intention of removing any clothing below his waist.

Kala had already seen him down to his skin when he had been so ill after receiving Semblance, and she was a trained healer besides. Torin knew that, and wasn't actually shy about his own nudity, it just felt wrong to expose a woman to his body, and it somehow made her already young and innocent appearance starker just thinking about it. Knowing that she was a grown woman and a goddess besides did nothing at all to assuage the feeling.

Kaus' laugh was almost a boyish giggle. They were all of them quite young for all that they were adults. That they had all accomplished so much in such a short time was probably something that set them apart from others. Kala's smile shared in the joke, albeit gently, and she gently helped him out of half of his shirt so it wouldn't get in the way. She placed her hand over his ribs, getting a sense of skin as well as the bone and blood and sinew underneath. It was a healer's touch, a sister's touch, and nothing untoward. The young elementalist wanted him at his ease, the better to acclimate himself to the new magic that would knit itself to his soul.

Kala took up a calligraphy brush whose bristles were narrowed down to a point. Her method wouldn't break the skin, nor scratch it even as much as a sharp quill would. There remained a memory of pain in Torin's other Rune, as well as a memory of pleasure. She would leave that to his lover, however.

She dipped the brush into her jar of spellwright's ink and carefully laid out the rune upon his ribs. It wasn't the same as hers; it was an intuitive thing, much as when she wrote out mantras on prayer flags for the temple. It was a rune unique to Torin because it embodied how Torin resonated with the elements and Kala herself on an aetheric level. While she could have just copied her own out upon his skin, she knew enough of scrivening and other things to know that this would be better, more personal.

When that was complete, she scrived several pictographs around the rune. These would not affect the rune itself, but would shunt off any wild aether to hopefully prevent threshold sickness. While she aside the ink and brush, Kaus knelt beside Torin's chair.

The lordling touched his thumb to his tongue, to his heart, and then to Torin's waiting rune. A bluish energy trailed along behind his thumb from mouth, to chest, to Torin. "I give you the Water of my body."

They were an educated pair, but they were also of the mountain people with their strange ways.

Kala took a pinch of dirt from a small pouch and pressed it into Torin's rune. "I give you the Earth of my home." It gleamed a greenish-brownish color.

Kaus leaned in and blew warm breath and pale blue-white power over Torin's rune. "I give you the Air of my lungs."

"I give you Fire," Kala said, carefully tracing his rune with her fingertip. It burned.

Receiving a rune from the twins was not at all like it had been from Aurin. The way Kala and Kaus did it felt more like he'd imagined it would from the stories he'd read as a child; there was a ritual to it and it felt like magic. Using aether in his every day was never like what using 'magic' from tales and legends was like, at least, not in Torin's head. Perhaps, if he'd told someone else about it, someone who wasn't a runesmith or a wielder of runes, it might have sounded the same but to him it was all calculations, measurements and timetables.

This though, with sparks of elemental essence swirling around his new rune, joining with his body, with his soul, this felt like Old Magic. Realizing he'd been holding his breath he relaxed enough to open his lungs when Kala's Fire burned the ink into something far beyond. It felt different, less like breathing and more like Air rushing in to explore him. The sensation was so unexpected the inhalation turned into a gasp, which only increased the sense of being filled with something that, if not alive, was by no means mundane.

Blinking, feeling a little dazed as the calculating part of his mind faded back and the part of understood aether on a more fundamental level rushed forward as never before, Torin slowly looked around the room. He could see the air, see it moving in patterns all around them. Flows like rivers move from the window, from the door, pooling in the room, drawing into each of them and then pouring back out like falls from their mouths and noses.

"Whoa..." It was more a sound than a word and his hands closed tighter around the arms of his chair as he realized there was Water moving too; mixing with the hair, pouring from each of them and... filling them. His heartbeat began to increase as he became hyper aware of the fact that Water was moving inside him, pumping through all of him in a constant rush that made him dizzy to feel. Trying to calm himself he swallowed, which had the opposite effect as he became away of all the Water in his mouth and then sliding down his throat. Realizing that taking deep breaths would likely have a similar effect so instead he looked up at Kala, eyes wide, not panicking but assuredly experiencing A Lot.

When Torin looked up wide-eyed at her, Kala smiled serenely; Kaus grinned, then his brows knit with concentration as he and Kala seemed to almost embroider the rune she had painted upon him with threads of the four basic elements. It was careful, exacting work, an attempt to blend the power into his soul more subtly so as to ease his initiation. While the smith began to observe the world around him with a new sense masquerading as his basic five, they began to weave strands of aether into the scrivened glyphs surrounding the rune.

They were protections against the elements lest he overreach and burn himself with Fire or bury himself in Earth. They were also threads of power that he could sense even more clearly now that this specific sort of aetheric arrangement was twined into his aura. They made up an ovoid cage that did not confine him, but would easily catch his attention and let it follow its defined arcs, the better to keep his attention from flying so far afield that he tore himself loose from his soul's moorings to his body.

And finally, they were done. Kala took one of his hands, Kaus the other. While both were masters of this craft and contained all the elements within them, Fire was more prominent through Kala's aura, and Air through Kaus'. It was almost as if the sun had shrunk down to beat within her breast, screened partially from view so as not to burn out his eyes. Kaus' was not so intense, though the Air seemed to want to lift him up even with his wings furled behind him. Their hands were anchors, aura's juxtaposed with his own.

"Look," Kala bade him, "but do not touch. Not yet. It will be enough to learn what can be learned through your rune first, how it mingles with your sembling."

"When it all settles within you," Kaus added, "we can show you how to work with it. I think Fire will choose you as it did Kala... but you still have to get to know it... like this. You will have a headstart, an affinity, but it can still hurt you if you aren't careful."

One of his hands rested lightly upon Torin's shoulder, too. He smiled.

"It is done," Kala agreed quietly, squeezing his hand in both of her own.

It might have been wiser to leave his Semblance wholly inactivated for the process but the human was simply too curious to have let wisdom prevail. So he watched, wide-eyed as a child, looking younger than his twenty-one years as the twins, looking competent, connected and in control, wove a beautiful pattern of aether over his skin.

He was well versed in Scrivening now and could see with both his eyes and his first rune what they were doing. This did not render their efforts less impressive and he wondered how much time they had spent working out the symbols. As strong as their bond was, it was possible only Kala had worked it out ahead of time and Kaus was moving on instinct from her lead, as they often did, but he couldn't form the questions that he wanted to ask into words while his soul was being, gently but thoroughly, pulled open and reshaped.

Torin was grateful they had chosen to take time in applying the rune, it allowed him to feel what was happening and understand it. Aurin's work had been through but the smith had been quite distracted by the intimacy and the pain involved. That, at the time, had been a blessing because it had stopped him from being afraid or panicking when he was overwhelmed by the flood of new power. With all the practice he'd had, along with his significantly greater understanding of runes and aether generally, it felt safer to be more aware, this time. Even though he was simply keeping himself still and calm it felt like something the three of them were doing together and, for the first time, Torin could imagine passing one of his runes on to another person.

The cage the twins wove to redirect him back into himself if he started to drift was a comfort, something in which he could relax, knowing he was safe. If there was an element of it that reminded him of the confining situations Aurin put him in it only added to his willingness to accept it.

He was beginning to find it difficult not to stare at one of them, or both of them with his Semblance as he saw how fundamentally they were connected to their elements of choice. It was as though Kaus were made of Air, and it was in love with him. How did he resist the constant way it seemed to want to lift him off the ground and tug him along with it over the whole continent, the whole earth? But Kala was even more of a fascination, for he could see the Fire inside her and it was a struggle not to reach out to touch it, draw it into himself as well.

Kala addressed his impulse to touch aloud, helping bring him back into focus even if it made him feel sheepish and obvious. Nodding his understanding and obedience both he smiled tremulously and held on to both of them. Anxiety in the situation was natural and understandable, and they would not judge him.

Over the next few hours, they stayed close, speaking together when he could pull himself together enough to form words. The sharing Semblance allowed helped a great deal when he could not and he was able to communicate what he was experiencing and have Kala confirm that it was normal, or at least not unexpected. The threshold sickness came on slowly but he could feel it as it did and fear began to come in earnest. A childish part of him wished he could curl up between the twins and feel surrounded by them but that was out of the question to his mind so he simply tried to control his impulse to cling as he grew alternately fevered and chilled, sweating suddenly without any temperature change and aching deep in his bones.

Each reaction was associated with one of the four basic elements and he could remind himself that this meant that he was connecting to all of them correctly, even if it was decidedly uncomfortable. Eventually, the other symptoms settled and he grew only increasingly hotter, so it felt like their was a furnace inside him. Rather than increase his fear, the sensation actually comforted him, soothing the pain in his bones and the chill, even drying up the sweating. It could be dangerous, to be sure, but it felt like basking rather than burning and he stretched toward it.

When it was done, they did remain on either side of him, wings partly unfurled as if they were keeping a baby chick from falling out of the nest. The conversation was light and easy as they were patient with his wonderment and questions, laughing softly and remembering their own awakenings to the elements around them.

Eventually, a servant brought specially prepared food from the kitchens, setting the tray nearby per Kala's instruction. Torin could see that she had the sembling rune etched into her soul, though her talent was far outstripped by his. In Starfall, runes and magical studies were common, though most people didn't take them very far. The will to power wasn't strong there; the people just wanted to be happy and keep their loved ones safe. He could see how Water was predominant in her aura, and after she left, Kala handed him a small plate from the platter.

"The food you will eat with us might be confusing, but it will balance the elements of your nutrition and hopefully help keep you balanced until any aftereffects of your initiation have passed." She paused, having caught his surface thoughts. "Ondine is a swimmer. Even in the winter, she has been known to leave early in the morning to do polar bear dives in Lake Udori. She was also born under stars that are associated with Water. You aren't wrong that it is likely she would have a predilection toward Water if she became an elementalist, a hydromancer. Or if she became a summoner, water sprites would look upon her most favorable, like some strange, heretofore unknown kin."

They hadn't let him drown in her watery aura, however. She did tell him a story about mischievous water spirits who appeared as beautiful women to lead men to drowning. It may or may not have been more than a fairy tale.

When he grew weary, the pair of them helped him to the bed that would be his while he remained with them. Then Kaus went to take a nap while Kala stayed up late watching over him. Sometime in the wee hours of morning, Kaus came to relieve her.

They took no chances with him. He was their mother's vassal, yes, but he was also their friend.
