Appearance
Realistically, there's nothing wrong with Valentin's appearance. His face is well-defined, his hair hasn't yet begun to grey, and his eyes are a jewel-like blue, which sparkle pleasantly in the sun. He does not spend much time outdoors or in the gym, but maintains a reasonable physique and a fair complexion. Valentin never dresses casually, preferring severe black clothing and business attire even at parties or visiting with friends. One could say that he seems to go out of his way to avoid being approachable- and if they did say so, it would be with great accuracy.
Personality
Valentin perceives himself as charming and witty, a man of poise and learning and dignity. The general consensus is that while he isn’t a stupid man, he’s wrong about everything else. In practice, Valentin is a relentlessly bitter man, his humor is inevitably insulting, and he has a tendency to treat everyone just as badly as he can reasonably get away with.
Valentin sees himself as underappreciated and extremely important, and he views his role as an auditor as a way to express power over other people, who have unfairly seen greater success. The most common target of his derision is his own brother, Oliver, who is renowned as a heroic figure throughout the capital, and who he resents especially for having overshadowed his own efforts to restore the Valentin family’s fortunes through conventional work.

History
Valentin Valentin (so named because of a mistake with the birth certificate; by the time the young Valentin couple had the wherewithal to have the mistake fixed, his father had become quite enamored with the moniker) is the firstborn child of Victor and Cecilia Valentin, both of whom are quite overshadowed by Victor’s own father, Alexander.
To explain: Alexander was a famed aerial ace and explorer in decades past, his exploits the topics of much excitable news coverage and no less than four separate series of penny dreadfuls, over a dozen books featuring creatively-interpreted versions of his archeological trips across Karnor, and even a particularly exciting secret expedition to the wilds of Ecith. During these trips, Alexander acquired a fabulous treasure, and even after turning over the bulk of it to the Imperial government, was able to enjoy a lavish retirement Northside.
Victor, on the other hand, was a man of good character but small talent. Though his inheritance easily bought him a commission in the Imperial Air Force, he lacked either the ability or connections to climb past the rank of Lt. Colonel. He never bemoaned his fate; though he achieved no great success professionally, he met Cecilia and fell madly in love, and the two have moved into their golden years happier than most.
By the time Valentin was born, however, it became obvious that the family fortunes were not going to last forever. Year after year, and Cecilia cut additional expenses, carefully maintaining the façade of strong finances. Valentin was inundated with tales of Alexander and old Valentin Family heroism, but he was a very practical boy; he saw that continuing to chase his grandfather’s unlikely success would lead only to the continued dissipation of his family’s standing and wealth.
As Valentin grew, and especially with the birth of his younger brother, Oliver, he dedicated himself to becoming a prize student, working hard and achieving perfect grades. Valentin distinguished himself in school and achieved a degree in higher education with the aim of climbing the Imperial Bureaucracy as high as it would go, thereby assuring his family’s position and security. He undertook intensive legal study, and even the study of magic so that he could present himself as an asset to his Imperial Majesty’s operations abroad as needed. In short, he did everything he could to make his family proud of him.
And then Oliver, fresh from his schooling, uncovered an ancient ruin thought lost forever by the archeological community, and suddenly the world went wrong.
In the past several years, Valentin has seen a media, academic and familial focus on the many (genuinely impressive) adventures his brother has undertaken, with people calling Oliver Alexander’s “true heir”. Meanwhile, Valentin has found himself threatening business-owners for tax money and sucking up to provincial governors; unglamorous work which has led to virtually no publicity.
This has led Valentin to become bitter towards his beloved sibling, his family, and society as a whole, and he has thrown himself into his work with a passion which is frankly unhealthy in a revenue officer. Now, he seeks both to advance his own career at any cost and to “take Oliver down a peg”- however, when the chips are down, Valentin still worries for his brother’s safety, as he knows that Oliver is a born daredevil. When forced to choose between himself and Oliver, what will he do?
