Glade 1, 124

The year past had been different from those that came before in so many ways it was near to impossible for the young lord of Stardew Valley to think of them all as a single year. Many of the changes were good, many were bad enough that it was difficult to hold on to the hope that the way life had once been on for all people might ever return. Starvation and death, accompanied by the illnesses that always followed were rife everywhere but there were a few pockets where those in power cared enough for those without it that hope could hang on.

The Valley was one of those places. The people he had invited to live in his tiny domain had come to build better lives for themselves but quickly enough their focus had shifted, as Torin's own had, to producing enough that their work might allow others to live. With the help of Aurin Kavafis, Sivan Sunrunner, and the patronage of all the Leukos', the community had pulled together their labor of all kinds to bring in harvests more bountiful than any brand new farms had any right to. Their work had been rewarded not in gold, but in the looks of the faces of the poorest of Kalzasi as they were able to fill their bellies through the never-ending Frost.

The twins, Kala and Kaus, had returned from their journeys abroad with the quiet hope that when the season turned this time around, it might actually turn. There were no guarantees in the world anymore, but in this as in all else, Starfall gave hope a fighting chance.

Now, on the eve of that hope, the first day of the year, to thank everyone for their hard work and show his appreciation for their willingness to be in his life, Torin was doing what he'd done every year since he'd been free to do so, he was hosting a feast. The large tavern that he'd had built to server as meeting place for the community as well as, he hoped, someday, an actual inn and tavern, was being put to the test for the first time. The large kitchen had been bustling with the activity of the mothers and daughters of the farming families, as well as a his own elder apprentice, since dawn and the scents that flowed out any time the swinging doors were pushed through was enough to make any mouth water.

Several of the inhabitants were musicians and their instruments were already set up on the little raised platform he had imagined Finn and others like him occupying. Tables set up around the edges of the room had been decorated, mostly by the children, with the evergreen things that never died as well as with an abundance of flowers that Torin could only imagine had been Sivan's doing. Behind and around the bar were gathered the men of the community, some easy in their positions, others, young, were trying to grow into them. Torin understood, painfully, what wanting to be accepted as an adult felt like so he made sure to greet them all with equal respect as they tapped kegs and opened bottles to share freely.

His guests from elsewhere were due to arrive any time and there was nothing for the Lord of the Valley himself to really do so he took a moment to close his eyes and his magical senses and let his lesser human ones take over. The sound of dozens of voices of all ages filled his ears, from grandfatherly Bond imparting his wisdom all the way down to Aaryn and Jaseline, both around ten, chasing each other back and forth through the empty space set aside from dancing and even the quiet cry of baby Kefir, not yet a year old in his mother's arms. The women instructed and gossiped and laughed in the kitchen just as the men did the same at the bar. It was like the village he had grown up in except, now he did not dread such gatherings. Now, they felt like home.

His eyes, still closed, began to prick at the idea and he had to open them quickly, remind himself that the people all around him were real and that their Lord suddenly beginning to cry would not be either inspiring nor appropriate to a celebration. As though seemingly to realize he was looking for a distraction, Brodaric, a man of about fifty who had been head-man of his village before it had been destroyed called him over, pulling him into the conversation in his easy, charismatic way.

Torin accepted the mug of ale that was offered when he walked over and let himself be accepted into the conversation, though he listened more than contributed. It was an interesting position to be in, young enough that he didn't have very much useful to add to the conversation and thus belonged in the group of young men, most unmarried as he was, yet he was also the Lord and therefore was treated mostly with the respect that was granted the older men by the younger and each other. It wasn't a bad thing, he thought, being respected but still expected to need help and advice sometimes.

The first dishes began to be paraded, steaming from the kitchen and he turned to watch, keeping one eye on the wide doors for the faces of those he loved and respected most.

The Leukos twins had always tried to balance their duties at home with their duties in Kalzasi; now Torin was their mother's vassal, their visits to him came both to his city forge and his valley forge. Indric, her Silver Wing, knew the aetheric key to open a portal through the wards Master Kavafis had laid and she herself had bolstered with energy, at least; Kavafis was the superior warder between them. She was learning how to control her growing abilities with more sophistication.

The citizens of the valley knew of her wings as well as her divinity. Some prayed to her, even. When she stepped through the portal nearby, everyone there present felt the weight of her presence, but while it was quite real, it fell like a comforting blanket about the shoulders rather than a heavy yoke about the neck. As per usual, her Silver Wings traveled with her. Ceran and Indric were orphans, anyway, and Asallon's family was, one might guess, in Auris. This time, they brought another, her secretary, the demon indwelt Kanedama. He was on his best behavior.

All of them entered the tavern's taproom with arms full of presents for everyone from Lord Torin down to little Kefir. Though these people had come from Kalzasi, they were now people of Starfall.

Sivan followed them from without, where he had been skulking. Now, he was helping Asallon with what he was carrying, chatting away about summoning. Aurin was crouched in a corner, delighting children with illusions and sleight-of-hand. He was also on his best behavior. The Leukos group was welcomed as if they were old friends or family, albeit with more respect. Kala and Kaus wore authority as easily as their clothes, but then they had been born to it. They were, as ever, gracious.

"Everyone's name is written on the tag," she assured a young mother as they began depositing presents in the appropriate area. This one was literate, Kala knew. Lessons in reading, writing, and arithmetic had been assured, as well as future education and apprenticeships for the youth.

Everyone in her retinue made sure that they went to Torin to thank him for his hospitality before too long. Asallon did, then went back to discussing his special interest with Sivan. The introverts kept each other safe. Ceran and Indric arrived, covered in small children, and bowed before moving outside to do some roughhousing where the children wouldn't break anything or overturn platters of food. Kaus gave Torin a friendly hug before wandering off to find Timon and give him his present.

Kala was last, her secretary in tow.

"Lord Kilvin," she greeted warmly. "You host a splendid New Year party as usual. Thank you again for the invitation. I don't recall if you have met my secretary at the ministry..."

"Kanedama," the elf interjected, offering a curt bow to Torin. He was a strange one, and Torin might not sense the strange blend of elven and infernal soul within him unless he had opened himself to the aether once more. But Kala had a leash upon him; if not a summoner's bond, then something else--something divine.

As soon as Torin was made aware, by the bows, curtsies and general showing of respect that passed through the room as the twins entered he opened himself back up his aetheric senses. Kala felt too good on so many fundamental levels, he wanted to feel it in every way that he could. It struck him immediately that having the budding deity of unity, of community, gracing his celebration of exactly those things was the sort of event that great men and scholars might consider portent, but he ignored this.

The master of the valley went immediately to greet his guests. Hugs were given to the twins, with a little care not to crush that which they carried, then clasping arms with the Silverwings, who he admired; Indric and Ceran particularly, for a variety of reasons. After this he ushered them to the tables for gifts that had been covered and were now overflowed onto the carpets surrounding them. He himself had ordered many luxury goods for his people, fine bolts of cloth, spices, difficult to find materials for the other crafters, toys for the children, anything he thought might please his people. It was his first New Year as their Lord and he had perhaps overspent but it wasn't as if there were others present who would judge him for it. What was the point of wealth if not to share it?

There were a good many gifts with no names attached to them that were either for everyone to share or for extra guests he might not have accounted for. The number of packages and parcels that bore his name, or his title, was overwhelming to him but he could sort through both the gifts and his feelings about them later, with Aurin. His eyes wandered, with his mind, to the red fox who had stolen his heart. He'd never seen the man interacting with children specifically before and, knowing Aurin's Semblance was at least as strong as his own, tried not to have any feelings about what he saw.

Not wanting to draw attention to Sivan, Torin reached out with his Semblance and greeted him in the private place they kept for each other in their minds, calling him a word in the elf's native tongue that managed to skirt the line between brother and beloved.

When Kala returned after dropping off her burdens he thanked her for coming, wondering if she could sense his feelings about her presence through her divinity as well as through her runes. When he was introduced to the newcomer he returned the bow, without a nobleman's grace but filled with a commoner's sincerity.

Kaus found Timon in the kitchen adding the finishing touches to a huge haunch of some wild game meat, boar, perhaps. He grinned when the young lord appeared and made a jest concerning Kaus' appetite. The women and older girls who were bustling all around them eyed them both with varying degrees of interest, speculation and appreciation.

Moments later Kaus was drafted into service to carry one of the heavier trays as the main meal was brought out and laid on the tables. There was little ceremony as the whole village sat down to partake with many compliments for anyone who had been involved, which was everyone. Toasts were frequent enough that people stopped trying to stand for them, though the one Torin offered to House Leukos and Starfall was given this respect. When everyone had eaten their fill, but not too much, of the excellent dinner the musician took up their place and began to play. Their first few songs were ones to sing along with while digestion happened, but within the hour they were limbering themselves up for dancing music.

Most of the villagers rose to dance, but, being from all over the region it took some time for people to get organized into specific sets. Different village dances were taught and learned aided by laughter and a goodly amount of alcohol. Timon insisted that each of the twins partner him at least once and showed himself to be as graceful on the dance floor as he was in the fencing yard.

When everyone was either out of breath or growing too inebriated to easily continue the desserts were brought out, including a massive flaming pudding that everyone was told they had to try because it was involved a blessing for the new year, even the children were allowed a spoonful despite the amount of liquor involved in ensuring it kept burning while they ate.

As the ranking Leukos there present—and as some there present's personal lady and savior—Kala was obliged to bless the meal, the gifts, the people, and the year ahead.

"The long winter is breaking," she promised them. "I can feel it." And though they had been protected from the worst of it by wards she had helped create, as well as their lord's careful stewardship, there was an audible sigh of relief from the crowd.

She was only too happy to dance, setting aside all seriousness. Kaus danced as well, adept enough although Kala was the one who had trained at it. She had been the one to teach Timon, as well, telling him how well it would support his elegance as a fencer. She was pleased with his progress.

"...just the sort of place we would have wanted to live," Ceran was saying to one of Torin's people, his arm around his beloved's waist. Indric just smiled quietly, much more comfortable here than in more formal revels.

When Kaus flat out told Aurin he wouldn't take another shot, the fox-faced man smirked and began talking about Timon's cooking and how he was husband material. Soon enough, he had cornered Kanedama. From the outside of the conversation, one might guess he was attempting to seduce the secretary, but in truth, he was grilling him about a certain demon who had bamboozled a certain Lysanrin into housing him.

Meanwhile, Sivan came up to Torin, who was briefly alone, to wrap him up in an adoring embrace and kiss him thoroughly. There was wine on his tongue, of course, but he was hardly out of control; he was merely uninhibited enough to express himself with people watching. Nobody seemed to mind.

"Lady Akshara calls," Kala said apologetically when the time came for her to go. The twins had pushed the limits of time they could spend there, and were required back in Starfall to be seen by the populace there. Kaus gave Timon a hug that involved picking him up off the ground.

"Thank you for including me in your hospitality, Lord Kilvin," Kanedama said ere passing through Indric's portal. He seemed confused as to why he had so enjoyed himself.

"Now that the goddess is away," Aurin whispered into Torin's ear, embracing him from behind, "the devils can play?" But he had promised not to turn the evening into an orgy, at least while the children were awake. Sivan was in the kitchen doing some pre-cleaning, needing a break from all of the people.

Torin made his farewells to those who were departing, quietly asking Kala and Kaus to return the next day, when they were free, for their gifts. If it was awfully mysterious of the normally entirely unsecretive smith, he asked with a seriousness that belayed any thought of pranks or playfulness. Indric and Ceran were handed their gifts, those of his forge as they were leaving and even the odd little secretary was given a packet of little containers of the products of the valley so far. There were half a dozen such generic gifts for anyone who showed up.

Once the overlords and their party were gone the gift giving and receiving began in earnest, which turned the entire room into a bustle of unwrapping, gasps, laughter, and conversation that gave a sense of being very much in public but also allowed moments of privacy in all the din.

Torin took his gift for Sivan and slipped with it into the kitchen where the elf was tidying. It made him more comfortable and his lover understood the feeling. The gift he offered looked to be a leather shoulder satchel with dozens of clever little openings. He explained its bigger-on-the-inside quality, as well as how the different pouches could be set to different temperatures to ensure the keeping of different types of gathered plant or animals parts. Sivan liked to wander and gather and Torin hoped it might make such journeys easier without the need to rush back if something delicate or temperamental was found.

He had made one similar for Timon but it was intended to carry mercantile goods as the lad had become serious about starting his own little import and export business. It would ensure he could carry valuables safely without fear of theft but also he could theoretically carry a load of timber or stone by himself as well. While Torin had tried, and still tried, to give him as much of a childhood as he could he also recognized that Timon was more capable of maintaining his youth in his own way that Torin was. The smith had seen the way his first apprentice had leaned up into Kaus' parting embrace, knew enough of physical love to know that he had considered kissing him but decided not to. It might not be long before that decision was reversed, and Torin didn't know how, or even if, he should react when that time came. Thankfully, it hadn't.

Timon did so much of the cooking in Torin's house and Sivan took so many of his meals there that he felt he ought to help clean up as much as possible as often as possible so the lad felt appreciated. The elf was better at showing than telling such things. While his shyness had mostly gone away, he was still terribly introverted so he didn't mind the time alone, either. He didn't mind Torin's presence, though. In fact, he couldn't think of a time when he would rather be alone than have him there, unless it was time to buckle down and focus on a magical problem that Torin's own expertise couldn't help with. He dried his hands on a dish towel, having been warned by the young tyrant not to use the front of his trews.

He accepted the gift with a smile, quiet, letting Torin explain it to him. A gift from Torin was amazing in any case, but hearing his enthusiasm and love was the perfect packaging.

"Thank you," he said quietly when Torin had finally come to the end of his explanation. His hand slipped around the nape of the man's neck and pulled him close for a tender kiss. "Thank you," he said again, up close with their foreheads touching, their breath still mingling.

He slung it over his shoulder so he wouldn't lose track of it even at the party, not bothering to move away. At a silent request, Exael flashed into being, an eldritch thing for all that he was celestial in nature. His aidolon passed him his own prize, sent a telepathic season's greetings to Torin, and then disappeared to wherever he went when he wasn't manifest at Sivan's side. Sivan held out Torin's gift.

"Happy new year, melnā."

In his careful hands was a glass flask. He had blown the glass himself, etched it with pictographs by hand, and inside, the fluid had a faint sort of glow, and some invisible particulate sparkled when it was moved enough, something akin to fireflies or phosphorescence when bathing in the warmer seas at night. The enchanter might just recognize the pictograph that Sivan used for Torin, which likely meant its magic was keyed specifically to him and to no other.

"If you hold your name-rune to your skin and pour this out over a flat surface, it will form a pattern for a summoning circle. You really only have to think which court you wish to petition... but you can say it out loud if you wish... and several spirits I work with or have worked with will answer and perform any reasonable task for you. The debt is already paid so they are bound to it. Even an infernal won't be allowed to lie and say your request is above and beyond the payment, which... well, you can pay the extra. Most will accept pure aether. Some of the... hm... nicer ones will just... bill me."

His smile was quiet, conspiratorial as if he were sharing his secrets. It was a smile Torin sometimes saw when he forgot to put the light out and they were whispering, naked together in his bed at night.

"If you need it for runeforging and I'm not available or... for whatever other purpose."

Torin blushed a little at the genuinely expressed thanks. His inclination was to express gratitude for the gratitude but he was growing easier saying more of what he meant to those few who he was closest to.

"I love you." It was simple and sweetest for it. "I love the things you love. I want you to be able to do the things that give you joy." It was his explanation for the gift and Sivan would probably understand that. He had given the clock to Sivan would be dry and comfortable wherever he chose to venture, the Safety Net to keep him safe from whatever forms of harm might assail him wherever he chose to venture, and now, this newest gift was to hold safe and keep perfect whatever the elf found wherever he chose to venture. A part of Torin knew that the elf was not going to stay in Kalzasi forever. He would always be welcome, and more so in Stardew Valley, but this part of his life was a waypoint. They hadn't discussed it ever and how Torin knew he could only attribute to the close Semblance connection that they shared in work and play and often just around each other.

Torin answered the Aidolon's greeting and well wish with his own, but not aloud. Exael was loved by Torin because he was a part of the elf, but it wasn't the same way.

This year the smith had settled into himself the idea that he would be getting gifts and that he needed to not be weird about it because it wasn't fair. Had worked on it in front of a mirror, in fact, for several months. So he was able to take the delicate flask into his roughened hands without any awkward hesitation and give it the attention it was due. His eyes did dilate in their examination as the use of the bottle was explained.

For some reason the idea of a spirit putting Torin's request on account for Sivan to pay off later struck him as funny and he laughed quietly, amazement and delight as much amusement.

"The things you make are always so... magical." He laughed again, knowing he sounded silly. "I make practical things from magic, but you make things that are like faerie tales. 'Pour out the liquid and spirits will aid you, said the Elven Prince'." It was a quote from a story he'd known as a child, at least, it was similar to one.

"We complement each other, I think," he said softly, pleased to have pleased, and putting his arms around Torin while he had him briefly to himself. Aurin was in Kalzasi, so Sivan expected he would probably brave the cold—no longer an issue thanks to another of Torin's gifts—to go home after the party. He wanted Torin to have as much time with Aurin as he could have, which was less now that the man seemed to have mastered the slipspace and had taken his business global.

"But I have to keep you enchanted, don't I?"

He winked, then kissed his friend-cum-lover. When the handsome smith had walked into Jacun's shop, Sivan hadn't expected friend or lover, had only hoped he wouldn't screw up his Common too much and irritate one of his clever master's clients. Now he wondered if he could keep up with Torin between Kalzasi, his valley, and his liege lady's mountain fastness. Thankfully, Torin had solved the problem of distance, though, and seemed to like to be found whenever Aurin went looking. And Sivan was the lucky elf who got to work with him nearly every single day.

Sivan realized he was rocking slightly as if they were dancing. He flushed, pink against the gold of his complexion.

"I suppose we can't stay in here all night... And oh," he squeezed Torin, "I will help Timon with the cleaning when all's said and done and then I will go home. I know you have been looking forward to more time with Aurin." He radiated reassurance. He truly didn't mind, and he knew he was welcome to stay. But perhaps it was also a small gift for Aurin to have his boy all to himself. "And I will open the shop in the morning so you and Timon can sleep in. I did hear Aurin offer Timon something stronger than wine to drink..."

"Enchanted." Torin confirmed, sounding as though he always found Sivan so, which, in a way he did, and always had. The moment he had walked into an alchemy shop in the massive city and seen a real elf tinkering with a magical clock (he'd assumed it was magical at the time anyway) he'd felt like he'd stepped from his ordinary life into a story. That elf eventually becoming his friend and then more had done nothing to cause him to believe otherwise.

The rooms that would eventually be the guest rooms should the village ever become large enough and populated enough that it had any strangers or out of town guests to stay had been furnished as part of his most recent set of purchases and thus, if anyone wanted to stay and sleep off the night they could. Having them furnished also meant that Torin had a comfortable place to sleep if he ever wanted to spend the night in his valley before he got his house built (if he ever got his house built).

For a few moments they swayed together, close in the semi-quiet of the otherwise empty kitchen, then Torin returned one of the kisses he'd been happily accepting through the evening.

"I suppose not. I should invent something to freeze time so we could and I wouldn't be neglecting my own party. If you drink too much or you just want to, you can take advantage of one of my virgin inn rooms. I'll be staying tonight so you could slip in with me if Aurin doesn't stay to sleep here... or if he does."

The redhead appeared and disappeared like a mage from the same sort of old stories that involved elven princes but it was less enchanting when Torin knew it was because he was working as much as any three men while wearing the faces of at least that many.

"I think the girls... eh, the young women of the village have already made plans to make a bit of a party of coming back in the morning to clean everything and set the place back to normal. Torin huffed at the idea that Aurin was passing liquor to Timon but he smiled as he shook his head. There was literally not a thing he could do if either Aurin or Timon decided to get the apprentice drunk and both of them together were beyond even his ability to object with any authority.

"I guess I'll head back out and try to at least ensure he doesn't get sick." He pulled away but caught hold of Sivan's hand, "If you do go, come say goodbye first. An excuse to walk you to the portal will be a nice little break."

Then he was back out where most of the gifts seemed to have been opened.

People were showing off, comparing things, discussing how they would use the rich fabrics or new tools. Timon was discussing the properties of throwing knives with Aurin when Torin walked over and he threw his apprentice a very dark look before sighing and fetching the small leather bundle that was his gift for his master.

"So you'll never be without a weapon." Was all he said, giving the redhead the chance to suss out the properties of the gift himself if he wanted, if not, he knew he could ask and receive and enthusiastic explanation.

"Well, perhaps I will leave enough to clean that they get to enjoy their morning together," he allowed, holding onto Torin's hand as they ventured back out among the guests. Nobody really seemed to mind whether Torin was showing affection to one man or another. They were largely of Kalzasern extraction, and it wasn't only their Avialae overlords who were open to plural romantic arrangements. If anything, they probably mentioned such things with a hint of envy.

Timon raised both eyebrows at Torin's look. Aurin had brought him runeforged mezcal made from magic and Atraxian cacti and was teaching him how to drink properly. Timon didn't want to get blackout drunk; he wanted to be able to keep up with Kaus and others without making a fool of himself, although he didn't seem to mind when the young lord rescued him.

When Torin released Sivan's hand, he didn't mind, really. In fact, he sort of ran interference upon Timon so Torin could pull Aurin away. The elf realized he hadn't asked Torin about Lady Kala's demonic secretary, but there would be time enough for that later.

"May I taste?" he inquired.

Timon watched Aurin go, then smiled back at Sivan. He nudged Aurin's glass toward the alchemist.

"Firtht rule of drinking..." He blinked, scowled, and corrected his lisp, which hardly ever happened anymore. Perhaps this would be good practice in maintaining composure when drinking. Anyway, it was a holiday party, not a habit. "Don't drink once you've taken your eyes off your drink. So Aurin will assume I've poisoned his drink. You might as well finish it."

Sivan smiled and took up the glass. He was only glad that Aurin had stopped joking about buying alchemical roofies from him.

"Can't wait until the party's over, eh?" Aurin asked, the timbre of his voice throatier for the foreign drink. It was too smooth a brew to say it had roughened his voice, but it had certainty lent it a distinct quality. Perhaps once quaffed, it gave one a bedroom voice, although that would make it an inappropriate gift for young Timon. The red-headed fox manhandled Torin, but eventually took up his gift with a smile, like some godling accepting his due tribute.

He leaned back against the wall a little out of the way of the rest of the party, one hand keeping Torin close as the other turned over his gift to examine it. While he could conceivably snatch up a weapon with a quick hitch of his traveling trick, having a blade that came at his call like a well-trained hound would leave him more of his mind to focus on whatever spot of trouble he had gotten himself into. He wasn't ashamed that the deadly gift was making him hard against Torin, either.

"Thanks, love," he said. "C'mon, I've got something for you too..." And then the world blinked around them and they were back in Aurin's cottage in the alley behind the cabaret. "Just a quickie, though, and then back to your party, my lord." The way he offered the honorific was playful rather than mocking, but he rather thought Torin would stop thinking soon enough as Aurin was turning him around and yanking his trousers down. "You know how I love watching you play generous lord..."
