Strike the Bars II
21st of Ash, 124rd Year, A.o.S.

The silence around Lyra was thick, pressing against her as she lay still within the demonstone. She had long since quieted the raw fury of her first days here, refining it into something sharper. Now, patience gripped her, holding her rage like a taut wire, controlled but deadly.

Lyra had spent many hours contemplating her situation. Though her prison was formidable, there were signs of potential weaknesses she could leverage. Her thoughts drifted back to the fragment of her soul she had sent across the boundaries of the demonstone. She had tried many, many times to touch upon that fragment, but always it seemed just out of reach. She could sense it somewhat, but it was like hearing a sound in a long and empty hallway, distant and hard to distinguish. Still she knew it was there, and that was some comfort.

Now she found herself drifting idly in the confines of the stone. From time to time she could sense the pull on her aether as the wards were reinforced, but she had not felt a significant draw in some time. There did not necessarily seem to be a pattern to the draining, as if the wards simply remained active and drew upon her essence when they reached some arbitrary level. When she struggled the siphoning came more often, but when she was still as she was now it seemed almost random.

It was clear that she would not be able to break the stone from the inside. Even when she targeted the wider outlet channels she simply could not summon enough force to overwhelm the defenses before her power was drained away. More frustrating was that any essence that did make it through the mesh to the outside world was completely ripped from her control. Every part of her will and intent was contained inside of the demonstone, yet somehow her power itself could be drawn out and used for whatever purpose the wielder desired. Lyra had been reduced to nothing more than a tool.

The anger threatened to explode once more, but Lyra quickly stamped down on those feelings. It would do her no good to fly into a fit of rage. She would only be wasting more of the limited aether she had access to.

That lead Lyra's thoughts back to one of the most troubling aspects of her situation. Because of the constant draw on her aether she was not able to build up enough power to enact any significant works of magic. Yes many of her lesser spells were available to her, but they were not directly useful to alter her current situation. Frustrating as it was, Lyra had come to accept that if she were to make any movements to escape she would have to find a method to resist the draw of her power and save up what aether she could.

This was the problem which Lyra had contemplated over the last few days, and it was not one that was easily solved.

Her thoughts traveled across the breath of the tools at her disposal. The first thing she considered was her natural control over her own form. It was true that through her unique circumstance she had an exceptional level of control over every strand of essence in her body and soul. Unfortunately it seemed the creator of this prison knew this as well, and had found a way to subvert her control. No matter how she resisted she could not prevent the steady draw of her aether, and after a time she let go of the thought.

Next came her other most utilized abilities. As it were her whispers were all but useless, as the mechanisms of the prison could not be corrupted by their influence. Down the line she went, considering and discarding each option until she was left with just three potential angles.

The first was an obvious one, and one she had already begun to utilize. Through her mastery of the scripts she could scour the wards around her and try to take advantage of any gaps in the wards. While none of her skills in world magics were directly applicable given the limitations placed on her, they were potentially useful as support in her efforts.

The other two were new to her, and thus it was possible that her captors had not considered them when constructing the prison. The first was the runic mark of the Void, the gift from the one she cared for the most. Nyx. Its powers over shadows and the void held much potential, but she had not had much time to experiment with its use before the birth of her daughter. The second came from one of her wayward soul fragments, the mark of chaos, Entropy. The magic itself was... difficult for Lyra. Not that it was not useful, or that it wasn't powerful. Ever since she had been freed from her first prison she had done what she could to force order on the world around her, and thus this mark was not one she cared to progress. Still, given her situation, Lyra had accepted she would need to explore every avenue of possibility.

Now as she flowed in circles around her prison, Lyra could not help but reach out to the darkness. She had not considered it before, but here in this place, in the quiet where everything was cast in shadow, was she not closest to her greatest love? Her focus shifted to the mark of Nyx that was emblazoned upon her soul, and with a breath of aether she extended herself out to touch upon the shadows around her... and they responded.

At first she simply used a trick of her aether to pull on the darkness around her, pulling it tighter about herself, and she imagined she was draped in a mantle of darkness, being caressed by loving fingers of the void. It wasn't true of course, but Lyra felt she was allowed to dream of some comforts. More and more of the shadows she gathered around herself, creating a veil which covered her. Then when she felt the pull on her power Lyra sent a forth a command, summoning the power of Fortis and solidifying parts of her cloak. She did not know what to expect, but as she observed she thought she saw the shadows resisting the pull of the wards around her. It was not much, but it gave her an idea.

Throughout her prison Lyra created small spheres of darkness, wrapping up small portions of her essence in shadow. First one, then two, and then five. Each she gave just a small portion of her aether, and when the pull came once again she watched closely. The wards still drew on her aether, even that which made up the spheres of shadow, but it seemed as if they could not as easily convert the aether in the darkness into something it could draw in. Most importantly the small pockets of aether within the spheres were not affected at all. It was not much, but she was able to hold onto just a fraction more of her power than she had ever before, and Lyra felt her confidence beginning to grow. She could resist.

Invigorated by the small success Lyra continued to experiment with the rune of Nyx. She shaped the shadows into different forms, twisted them around herself, scraped against the wards with thin blades of shadow. Most of what she did could not be considered productive, Lyra was merely basking in a newfound sense of control over her situation. More and more she used the power granted to her, and after some time a thought occurred to Lyra.

She was trapped in darkness, and could shape it into tools for her use... Could she not use this same darkness to pierce the veil into the realm of the Void? Once the idea had formed it could not be dismissed, but it was also not something Lyra could easily do. The amount of aether it required was more than what it cost to manipulate a few shadows. Thus she spent several hours gathering together the aether she needed, utilizing the shadow spheres to resist the pull of the wards around her, and when she had gathered enough she reached out across the void through the power of Vide.

At first it seemed not to work. The drain on her soul was greater than it normally should have been, likely due to her imprisonment. She felt as if she were pressing against a wall, shoving against it with all of her might, and just when she felt as if she would tire out there was a faint 'pop' and suddenly the expanse of the void spread out around her. She had not crossed into the void, but rather flung her senses into it. Quickly she gathered her wits and looked about for shadow in the world around her. Even a thin strand of darkness would do... and she found it.

When her vision focused again Lyra found herself looking out into what appeared to be a laboratory, illuminated by mage lights that beat back the darkness. Her gaze traveled upward, seeking the source of the shadow she now found herself in. A strange looking skeleton set into a recess of stone stood before her, partially obstructing her view. Yet she did not care. Delight blossomed in her soul. Lyra once again could see into the outside world.
