30th of Ash, 120 AS

Outside, the seasons were changing, the weather churning from summer to winter. Inside, the cheerful fire in the fireplace kept the room comfortably warm while a few open windows strategically let air in and out, the occasional breeze making candles flicker while sturdier lanterns gave off a steadier light. Umami scents of tobacco and mushroom wafted through the room from fresh-lit pipes and memories of supper drifting from the kitchen, jots of brandy warming bellies along with the cold ales and wines blossoming their bouquets under reddening noses.

The night wasn't exceptionally busy, though several regulars were gathered in knots around the place, speaking of mundane matters, the creaks of their boots and the taps of their tankards and tin cups syncopating with the song stylings of the would-be bard lazily improvising on a theme in a corner of the room.

If there was a lack of custom, it certainly wasn't his fault. The music singing from his strings was pleasant enough, a perfect counterpoint to the low-key, familiar feeling of the patrons. Finn wouldn't be making a great deal of coin that evening, but at least his fingers wouldn't lose their edge for lack of daily practice. His belly was full. His body was warm. If his boots needed resoling, well, he was fairly certain he could see the cobbler before it got truly cold.

The major key shifted to minor in a way that felt inevitable. Snatches of lyrics flowed in and out of focus but he focused on the music itself before he could truly understand what the song was about in order to match the word to note. Sometimes it worked the other way around; he would wake up with words on his tongue and struggle to write them down fast enough, only to reorder them, second-guess them, fret and focus until the structure was just right and then the music was evident in the cadence of each phrase.

Humming harmonies, he didn't know how much time had passed. There was a new face or two, and a few more gone that had been there earlier. He supposed he could have caught their attention, drawn their conversations to a close, demanded a more engaged audience, but that wasn't what the proprietor paid him for. No, he was basically there to keep the mood conducive to the sale of spirits, vintages, and brews. He was competent. He had a good reputation as far as such things went.

Oh, that modulation... yes.

His gaze crossed the room to take in the proprietor's mood. There was a subtle shift in his music as it echoed the Overture within, a subtle shift as his sense of self opened to that which was without. The man didn't look jolly, but he didn't look terribly upset either. But it was easier to know once he found the correct tone to match with the other man's.

Finn had come far quickly with his magical windfall, but his mysterious teacher warned that his musical affinity could become a crutch was easily as it was an aid in understanding what he was doing. It was difficult to truly believe that, though. Music was everything and magic was just a means to an end.

we keep on churning and the lights inside the house turn on
and in our native language, we are chanting ancient songs
and when we quiet down, the house chants on without us

It was getting late and the tribe was sure to be wondering where Rabu had run off to and yet the young bard was not heading home just yet. The city changed when the sun set and it was telling him to explore its other side. It was a time when the quiet old taverns of the daytime began to fill with all sorts of boisterous people and music. When the children were asleep and the real revelry could begin How could a bard such as Rabu not partake in such delights, it would be a crime not too.

The elven ears of Rabu’s Zoan form peaked at the sound of a lute playing nearby. The Rathari smiled and followed it through the cold night streets, trying their best to avoid the stumbling drunks who had already enjoyed far too much of the poison drink. The Bard wore the coat their auntie crocheted for them but the chilled wind still nipped at their exposed cheeks and thin elvish ears. The light emanating from the open windows and lanterns called out to the Rathari with the promise of warmth.

The Rathari finally entered the establishment, it was fairly relaxed and inviting. Everyone was having casual conversation and slowly working away at their drinks. This was were the music had lead the Rathari and its source was in the corner of the room with a human playing a lute with a decent level of skill. Rabu waded through the tables of people towards the fellow thespian and pulled a few gold pieces from their pockets and presented them to the lute player. Rabu smiled with a closed mouth so as not to show the cat like fangs in their mouth but the Rathari still shared eye contact where the man was sure to see the narrow pupils.

“As a fellow musician I offer my support.” Rabu whispered as they lifted the Ocarina on their chest and winked at the performer.

Distractions did not bother Finn when it came to playing anymore, not really. The creak of the door swinging open could not derail the music his hands were providing. His magical tutor suggested that he would have to get used to distractions when plying that skill, as well. Luckily the door wasn't such a great distraction that his eyes couldn't sweep over to take in the new patron. Still in sync with the proprietor, he felt—or was it heard; he often had to parse magical perception in more mundane terms to make it fit in his own mind—the man's piqued interest, a hint of calculation, and a slight irritation. The man seemed to have decided it was going to be a slow night with regulars and was then not in the mood to have to speak to new people, especially when they didn't seem to his eye to be big spenders.

Finn's lips quirked for a moment when he felt the irritation and realized it wasn't his own. He changed it into his own crooked half-smile of welcome. His eyes twinkled brightly as the gold when it was offered. Someone who valued music before alcohol was starting out on the right foot with him.

He could hear the quiet fall of resignation in the proprietor's symphony.

"Leading with a tip means you are welcome to join in," he jested, "though I don't think our audience wants anything too rowdy tonight. Improvise?"

His own rambling music quickly simplified into a basic melody that ought to be easy for the strange elf to pick up and play with, though he had no idea of his skill level. Many people claimed to be musicians. It wasn't that he doubted him outright, but one never knew. If he found the man's eyes strange, he didn't comment on it. Living in Kalzasi, even in the Low-City, one acquired a bit of cosmopolitanism. Their ruling class had magical wings, after all. Finn was just an ordinary human; he was boring by most accounts.

“Oh I would be honoured to make music with you Friend!” Rabu beamed with delight at the fellow bards gracious offer. The Rathari had played before with the tribe countless times but never with an outsider. Nearly all the outsiders Rabu meet enjoyed music but didn’t really participate and if they did Rabu was not their first choice. There was an entire tribe of more experienced musicians around that there was little demand for a novice such as Rabu.

“Before we start though I feel I should share my name, I am Rainbow After Storm but you can simply call me Rabu if you so choose,” The Rathari added with a respectful bow before rose up and continued with a grin “What may I call you other than handsome devil?” Rabu winked at the other bard while making a jabbing motion at him, to pull the mild flirting off as a friendly joke. There was no telling how well that could go but it would be a total waste if an attempt wasn’t made.

“I will join in once I have gotten a feel for your melody.” Rabu added as they moved into a comfortable position a few feet next to the other performer. The Rathari held their Ocarina close to their face and tapped the notes of Finn’s song gently to aid their memory. The song was relatively simple so it wasn’t long before Rabu was bringing the mouth piece to their lips and playing along. The Rathari did their best to complement the other performers sound and not compete but he threw in a bit of flair when the time seemed right. Rabu did still want to impress Finn a bit, even if the cat bards skills were limited he still wanted to make it clear he could play. With a touch of luck Rabu only had a few fumbles but recovered quick enough that hopefully no one would be any the wiser.

Finn's laughter was a little too wild to be musical, but this wasn't a forum for high art anyhow.

"Leading with a tip and following with a flirt?" he joked lazily. "Be still my beating... heart." In the brief pause between words, blue eyes dipped down as if to indicate he meant another organ, though his smile was more humorous than lascivious. "Rainbow After Storm? Well, even your name is a poem. I'm merely Finn, but it's a pleasure to meet you."

He let the words linger in the air as he vamped the improvised line long enough for the smaller man to learn it and join in. The ocarina's reedy high line was perfect for ornamentation, and so he kept things mostly the same, only changing little things each time he repeated the long phrase so that there was enough of a difference not to bore the ear but not challenge either of them to the point where they were likely to flub and draw the ire of the tavern's patrons. Eventually, he began to tap his heel and tap the body of his lute for a bit of percussion. It wasn't much, but he had often seen more accomplished players support their instrument with such things and he was always trying to improve—baby steps.

Eventually, the proprietor came over with a mug of ale for each of them, collecting the dregs of Finn's last drink.

"Aw, thanks... is that a reward or to get us to stop?"

The proprietor laughed as he ambled back to his regulars.

Since Finn was able to play his instrument and speak, he smiled at Rainbow After Storm. "Shall we take a break to refresh ourselves?"

They did pause to share some conversation over a drink. The young Rathari was quite interesting, and quite charming. Finn wanted to know him better, but got the feeling he would disappear after this evening and so he invited him to play again when the time came for him to get back to work. It was an interesting experience, listening not only with his ears to the ocarina's song, but with his aetheric senses to the Rathari's symphony. There was a connection between emotion and the outpouring of song. Someday, perhaps, he would understand it better. For now, he was learning new things from a wanderer, as well as how better to improvise with a stranger.

After hours of playing, pausing to wet their throats, and having a drink here and there, it grew late. Between the musical collaboration, being an audience to the song of the slight one's soul, and—honestly—the alcohol, he felt like he knew the man rather well for having only known him a few hours. He felt an urge to follow him to his tribe and go see more of the world, definitely whimsy fueled by drink, as well as an urge to invite him to one of the places that stayed open later and perhaps thence to his own rented room if he wasn't invited to see the inside of Rabu's tent. But all good things must come to an end, or so the poets claimed.

That night ended too. He hadn't made a great deal of coin, but he hadn't lost any and now his experience was a bit richer for knowing Rainbow After Storm.

"See you around," he said when they parted ways.

They wouldn't, but that was all right, too.
