1 Frost 120

In her autumnal wanderings, Kala Leukos had marked on the map in her mind where the Skyforge stood. She didn't know when it might be important to know, but it was another bit of knowledge she filed away for later use. Kaus had suggested they get each other new weapons forged by the Shinsei — who was, if not yet a master of his craft, certainly quite skilled — as gifts for surviving their upcoming Warren March. She did like that idea. Already she imagined requesting certain alterations from the curve of the daggers she carried now from a more elegant curve to etchings that made them look like feathers, and she would have plenty of input for Kaus' armor. He was built for agility, not brute strength. His armor should play to his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. If she wasn't an armorer herself, she certainly had opinions. She had seen him learn to fly, after all.

But today was for a different purpose. Her winter wanderings weren't much different, except she had to be surer of her footing in the morning when the ice might have accumulated, barely noticeable, upon the ground. She wore a heavier cloak, the shoulders embellished with Kaus' old feathers. Someone had accosted her the first time she wore it in Kalzasi, just recently, to ask if they were Avialae feathers, and then to express disgust. It didn't bother Kala overmuch, whose personal style was singular back home and so even more strange here in the capital where certain things were de mode or even de rigueur, while others were weird. Anyway, the woman made it sound as if she were eating her own toenail clippings when it was really no stranger than saving one's hair to make a hair rat or save a braid to add structure and ornamentation to a more intricate hairstyle.

The city folks were strange but didn't let it bother her. Instead, she let herself into the shop and quietly looked around at all the things on display until such time as someone came out to greet her. If nobody heard the door, she could still be patient. In any case, she enjoyed looking over everything, wondering how much of it was crafted by the Shinsei's own hands and how much was the work of apprentices or fellow smiths in his employ.

She knew that those responsibilities for House Leukos that were being slowly handed to her were enough to deal with as she studied at the Academy and prepared for her Warren March. As she became accustomed to balancing her responsibilities, they would add more. Talon Novalys was her elder and much higher in station; surely his responsibilities to House and State were even greater than hers. She didn't know how he managed without delegating, but perhaps this was an outlet for him, a sort of work that brought joy from the doing. She felt that way when she was dancing. Sometimes she had an audience, but for the most part, she was doing it for herself, expressing something ineffable with movement, embodying it.

And anyway, if he wasn't here, she was sure there would be someone who could help her with her special commission.

“If you cross those two pathways, the integrity of the structural flow will be compromised.” Talon stood with his hands crossed at the wrists behind his back as he observed his apprentice working on one of their latest instructorial projects. Velkan stopped just before meeting the tip of the aether chisel to the surface of the small bracelet beneath the aura glass lens. He furrowed his brow as he searched for the fatal flaw that Talon had mentioned. The young Novalys waited patiently for his budding apprentice to see the error. It took a moment before Velkan blinked.

“Oh. You mean here?” The young man pointed his finger to a frayed pathway within the internal structure of the bracelet. Talon nodded.

“You will first need to repair and reinforce that internal pathway before crossing over the rest of the internal structure. After that, then you can set about building the tunnels that reinforce the primary framework.” Velkan sighed and shook his head.

“Apologies, Master. I will get the hang of this, I promise.” Talon chuckled, shaking his head.

“It is alright, Velkan. Runeforging is not a straightforward practice. I simply have more years of practice.” He stepped forward reaching out with his hand to point at the aether pathways that would best help his apprentice reach his desired conclusion.

“Structural reinforcements are the easiest to build within your artifacts, that does not necessarily make them easy in and of themselves. You have to map out a framework that will not buckle under the pressure of the internal aether flow as you fold and compress things.” Picking up a pair of forceps, Talon used them to tug at the weave of the aether flowing in an awkward direction that would have compromised the work at hand. The ring of a bell announced the arrival of a customer. Talon gave Velkan’s shoulder a pat before walking up the stairs to the ground level in order to greet the customer.

As he arrived to the main floor of his shop he saw a young woman perusing some of the items. At first glance, he did not recognize her but then he recalled meeting her briefly earlier the season prior. He did not rightly recall her name but her face was one he remembered seeing.

“Welcome, my Lady. How may I help you today?” Talon was dressed in humble clothing that was worn with age but comfortable for work in a blacksmith and arcane forge shop. A loose fitting linen shirt that was without sleeves so as not to get caught in the flames of the forge. A pair of rough leather bracers that protected his forearms, a pair of well worn comfortable pants tucked into heavy leather boots. He folded his arms over his chest and offered the young woman a welcoming smile.

Talk less, her mother had urged. Smile more.

Though women were well treated in Avialae-led society, even respected in many ways, the Crystal Lady had chosen not to bless them with wings and so they were indistinguishable from their mother races. People would forget her lineage no matter how many of her brother's primaries were braided into her hair, woven into her clothing, and turned into simple jewelry. They looked at Kaus and saw an Avialae, albeit a scrawny one. They looked at Kala and, if they didn't know better, would see only a diminutive woman despite having the same noble lineage as Kaus and their elder brother, who would be Lord of the Mountain one day.

And so it was good advice to use one's weaknesses and turn them into a strength. If she was to be underestimated, so be it. Wars were won that way—though, of course, House Leukos desired nothing so much as peace.

Talk less. Smile more.

"Shinsei," she greeted, bending her knees slightly and bowing her head. It was far less formal than she had greeted him at his party. She smiled, a sincere thing, though understated. "It is good to see you more relaxed than at a state function. I am certain you are busy, so I shan't waste your time with pleasantries." She pulled a silk handkerchief out of a pocket and began to unfold it. "While making our devotions at the Temple, my brother and I were visited. The Lady of the Midnight Mourning spoke to us and gifted us with a strand of Her hair."

Without pomp or circumstance, she held out the square of silk in both hands. Her casual reverence might have been jarring for someone else; she couldn't say. The strand of divine hair lay there. What his eyes might see, she couldn't say either.

"I would like it set in crystal to preserve it as a little relic for future meditations."

Talon blinked. He had heard of the Lady of Midnight Mourning. She was a mythical figure that did not often interact with travelers but when she did, it was memorable to say the least. The fact that Kala had not only met her but was carrying a strand of her radiant hair spoke volumes. Talon did not think he would ever be graced with such an incredible opportunity again in his life. He stepped forward and gingerly reached for the strand of hair, grey eyes briefly going to Kala for permission to grasp it.

“This is a runesmith’s dream, Lady Kala.” Already Talon’s mind was running with the possibilities of what he could fashion for the woman in front of him. There was a shine to the young Novaly’s eyes as he observed the strand of hair. There was so much wonder that he scarcely could contain his excitement.

“You have been given a remarkable gift, my lady. I would beg that you allow me the privilege of fashioning more than a mere crystal from this. A gift such as this has incredible properties. The fact that Lady Saedene gave it to you freely…” He shook his head, marveling at the thought. Talon returned the strand of hair to Kala then pointed at it.

“The things I could fashion for you with just that strand of hair alone. It is a wonder and I am honored that you would come to me with it.” He gave the young woman a slight bow before straightening. Talon paused in his excitement. Part of him wanted to open up his Semblance enhanced vision so that he could delve into the properties of the hair that might be found. The other part of him was hesitant to do so without the added protections available in his laboratory proper. There was no telling what he would find within the weave of the strand’s aether. It was a miraculous thing and he would not treat as anything less than the incredible piece of pseudo-divine reliquary that it was.

“But if that is not something that you desire, I will abide by your wish. The request as given, is a simple one.”

Her smile was quietly beatific; having a deity of any status acknowledge the old ache of her father's loss while she and her brother venerated his memory was an undeserved kindness. That she had also been able to pet a wyrmling and was given a gift to share with Kaus was unimaginable until it didn't need imagining—it had happened. While not obsequious, she was a respectfully silent as he marveled at the thing and considered what he might do with it. His enthusiasm made her smile, but it was tinged with something, perhaps embarrassment.

"Of course I brought it to you, Shinsei," she said. "I do not know you well, but many have affirmed your skill and my impression of you was that rumors of your being an honorable man are true." The strand of hair might seem a small thing, but he seemed to understand. She had wanted to protect it, but worried that it was rare enough a lesser person might attempt to steal it from her. With a rune-enhanced eye, she could recognize magical patterns, but she was not so versed in divine artifacts to be certain she couldn't be duped with a fake, not until she had borne the thing for a longer period of time.

"Were I my mother, I would put a dent in Starfall's treasury to house it properly. Alas, I was hoping to pour what resources I have into something simple to protect it, and perhaps add ornamentation as I am able. But if you think that would offend the Lady, perhaps I could give it up. House Ahtivan or the Temple itself might fund something more appropriate. I would only ask that it be kept in the chapel for mourners, that others might be comforted by its presence."

She would regret losing it, and she supposed she ought to speak to Kaus before giving it up, not that he was likely to contradict her. He would agree that Her greater gift was the comfort of Her presence, the acknowledgment, and the time She spent with them. Kala was used to sacrifice. She did not reach to take it back.

"I will be guided by you, Shinsei," she said with a dip of her chin.

“If the Lady gave this gift to you, it is meant for you and you alone. As for the cost?” Talon shook his head. This was one expense that he would eat himself. It was not as though he was hurting for money. “To charge you for this opportunity would be an insult to Lady Saedene.”

Talon rubbed his chin as he thought on what he might be able to draw out from the hair. He would have to study it closely. Already the schematics for several artifacts were running through his head. What little he knew of the Lady of Midnight Mourning was that she was a benevolent spirit who was closely associated with concepts of mourning, the comforting of those who were left behind. She was also associated with the dawn and light as well as fire. He would have to do some studying of the spirit in order to more closely understand exactly what it was that he would be working with.

“You said you wanted it to be an adornment? I can fashion an amulet for you, something that you can wear proudly around your neck.” He was vaguely familiar with the symbols of House Leukos. The star that served as their seal would be a fitting symbol to fashion upon the amulet, if not use a dragonshard and through his jewelcrafting shape the dragonshard into the star itself. He had a fairly good idea as to which type of aether gem to use in conjunction with the hair. Talon nodded to himself as he came to his conclusions with a smile.

“Thank you, Kala. Shall I fashion something for your brother out this strand of hair as well?” He remembered the young woman walking beside a brother when they had been at the ball. He recalled that they bore a resemblance to one another that was uncanny leading him to believe that they were twins.

"Would it not be an insult on my part not to contribute to its preservation?" she asked, not challenging his position but honestly asking his thoughts on her thought. Mortal feelings were complex enough. She had no desire to offend or upset a deity, and not just because that could bring her misfortune. Though strange, She had been kind. In a sense, it made the world feel like a kinder place.

But she wasn't going to argue with the Shinsei about it. In another light, it would be wrong of her to muck up things with too much negotiation. If the gift gave him an opportunity to honor deity, then it was right that she let him. If anything, it would bode well for his future reign. The honors he labored to give the divine might bring Their blessings down on his subjects, too.

"I don't know that adornment is the proper word," she said, pale brow furrowing as she thought how best to articulate. "Something to house and protect it. I suppose that might be an amulet, that it might be kept close. And it were well if it were beautiful. But please, don't split it in twain. If we are to guard her gift, we will just pass it between us."

She smiled then, liking that he wanted to create something beautiful, as well. "And I suppose you might find hidden gifts within it, that may be of some use. The Gods, I think, are practical."

If she had a problem with the Crystal Lady, she hoped it was a misunderstanding that could be corrected. But while meeting Lady Saedene had given her a brief flash of hope that she might plead her case before the Dragon Goddess, it had faded. There were more important things to think about than her lack of wings.

Talon thought for a moment. He looked down upon the strand of hair in his hands. Gently he thumbed it between his fingers as he thought on what could be done to bring out its true potential.

“I cannot speak for them, but I do not think the gods would be so affronted by such a deed. You have given the Lady thanks, yes? You have sought to turn this into a boon meant to protect. What little I know of Saedene tells me that she would be pleased by such a thing. She is a guardian after all.” He looked around his shop as though searching for inspiration as to what to craft in order to house the strand of hair. He would not break the hair as Kala requested as there were means by which he could still bring out its potential without dividing it. He had never dealt with a piece of divinely gifted material before. He was not even certain that his forge would be able to handle it appropriately. There would only be one way to find out.

“Something tells me that there are many things to be found within a strand of hair gifted by one such as Lady Saedene.” He gently closed his hand around the hair before looking up at Kala. He smiled genuinely as excitement practically thrummed all through him. Taking a deep breath, he ran a hand through his hair as he contemplated the possibilities.

“Come visit me again on the 35th. I will have something prepared for you by then. It will be simple, I think but it will work to draw out some of the latent qualities that may be housed in the strand. I want to see what it might be capable of before attempting anything greater with it. If all goes well, I will be able to fashion something of much grander scale once I have an idea of how it performs.” Talon nodded as though he had settled an argument with himself. It was perhaps for the best that he not attempt anything grandiose before seeing or at least being given a report on how it performed in conjunction with other magic. Once he had an idea of what it might be able to do when actively channeled, then he would be able to form a greater picture of what it could achieve when put to truly focused purpose.

“Was there anything else I could do for you, Lady Kala?”

She shook her head and smiled.

"I think it best I leave you to your work now and return to mine," she said. Even those Avialae without wings kept themselves busy in securing Kalzasi and its environs, whether through the sword, sorcery, or more mundane efforts. Her blades were ready, of course, as was her magic, but as she took on more responsibility for her family's financial work within the city, she began to see how the more ordinary work truly kept the engine of progress moving forward. The thrust of a blade was kinetic energy. Aether was fuel. But every coin was potential energy, and its ebbs and flows were the city's lifeblood. She wondered if the city looked like some intricate piece of runeforging to the prince, but she didn't ask. It wasn't her place.

"I will return on the 35th, then, barring any messages indicating otherwise. Messengers will find me at our Cintamani Pavilion when I am not at the Academy."

When Kala bowed, it was a gracious dip — not perfunctory, but neither was it unctuous. A simple sign of respect that didn't draw attention to herself nor, hopefully, embarrass the Shinsei in his refuge from the pomp and circumstance of his royalty.

"Thank you for accepting this commission. I don't know that I would feel right leaving such a relic in anyone else's hands. I am certain you will make Her happy with your work." That said, she did leave him to his work. If his process was anything like her own experience of magic, he would be itching to immerse himself in the experience. So it was when she embraced the elements, peeked at the world through a lens of aether, or redirected its flows with her pen. Some magi made the practice scientific, and she certainly studied what rules and laws had been discerned, but there was also something esoteric about it all for her. Magic was magical and for all the derived formulae, there was something instinctual, intuitive, and ineffable about it.

Perhaps someday she would speak to Talon Novalys about such things, but for today, there was work to be done.
