Talon blinked as suddenly Lyra was in his face. The aura glasses were brought out and he could just feel her peering at his aura. Suddenly he felt very self-conscious. A fact that was reflected in the sudden fluffing of the feathers of his wings. Her hands upon his body made him jerk back in surprise as she touched him, not just upon his but beneath it. Cool fingers brushing over his chest was a very intrusive sensation that he only welcomed from a very select few individuals. He rose swiftly from his seat, wings flaring slightly both in surprise and defensiveness. Talon gently but firmly removed Lyra’s hands from his body and took a step back so as to be able to put a bit of space between them.

“Ale’fira, I understand your excitement but please, a little warning is appreciated.” Too many battles had ingrained in Talon a hesitancy when it came to being touched by people he did not implicitly trust. He enjoyed Lyra’s company but he did not know her well enough to include her in that circle. Too much time spent being an object of careful scrutiny and purposeful grooming had made him slow to even welcome the idea of being touched or exposed to anyone but the absolute closest in his emotional circle. There was also the very recent attack on his life that, when he least expected it, reared its head as a reminder that there were people out there who wanted to see him dead.

Talon smoothed his shirt. He let his wings fold back into place before letting out a slow breath. Having sensed his sudden startling and shift in mood, Aoren again reached out across their bond. He did the equivalent of mentally linking their fingers together. Across his melodies the exchange of thought would see a harmonizing of two different symphonies. The music remained distinct to the individual but came together as easily as an orchestra falling into sync. The rhythms of both Talon and Aoren were in near perfect harmony with each other. Through the avenue provided to her via her Rune of the Mesmer, it was plain to see that Aoren’s symphonies were intricately threaded throughout the whole of Talon’s being, flowing alongside his. There was a second presence as well, one not as deeply in tune with Talon’s own music but it was there.

Rickter. His presence was woven into the young Novalys being. The melodies of the Rathari wolf were not as prominent as that of Aoren’s but they were noticeable.

“To answer your question, Avialae can form a bond with any who are willing. As long as they are intelligent enough. We cannot form bonds with common animals and the like. I do not know the reason why.”

Disappointment flickered across Lyra's expression but was quickly masked and set aside. Mortals were all so curiously obsessed with the idea of personal space. Perhaps it was something to do with their bodies, always stuck in one form, trapped by the physical and unable to move freely. The thought brought back vague memories to Lyra's mind, of times before when she rarely, if ever, adopted a physical form. So stifling, so rigid. She missed that feeling of freedom.

Despite his initial protest Talon did as she wished, and Lyra's smile broadened. She drew in a sudden breath as Aoren reached out. It was soft, a subtle thing that was so easily missed if one were not looking for it. On the surface it sounded as if one symphony merely changed slightly, adding in a few new tones that could have been many things, yet... No, an entire symphony of melodies suddenly appeared, wound and harmonized and linked with Talon's own. It was so fast, so familiar, and seamless that the melodies almost didn't register it. There was more, something else, a third? It was difficult to tell, but the harmony between Talon and his companion was the strongest and most obvious for her magic to pick up.

"Both souls feed into the bond, with one soul being the anchoring point." Lyra breathed in an excited whisper. Her fingers curled unconsciously like she was barely holding herself back from pealing back Talon's skin to see underneath. A bit of her old self, Lyrielle, showed in her eyes as she felt the shudder of her mind respond to the possibilities. She wanted to know, to flow into Talon, to take, to control, to understand.

"Each soul provides aether, and the bond itself allows for synchronicity, harmonizing of symphonies. But of course, it does, that's how bonds, non-magical bonds, work." She said, still smiling and almost bouncing as she circled Talon, still listening, "Familial bonds, bonds between lovers, friendships, professional, all built on synchronizing and harmonizing souls indirectly. This though... It skips entire decades of steps, moving straight to the level one would see in lovers near the end. Magical, forced connection." She paused, and the amended, "Accelerated connection, requiring both souls to agree. It's like... It's like a magical contract."

Lyra stopped circling, staring blankly at Talon's chest for several seconds before rushing back to her desk. She took up several of her pages, holding them up and scanning them quickly.

"It requires consent and then strengthens that which is there as if you spent months, years of time together. The souls harmonize through magical adaption, which is not possible unless both have willingly agreed to the process. Of course... And the deeper the connection, the more the symphonies harmonize... Then two souls are treated like one, or close to it."

The smile faded, replaced by a frown before Lyra chuckled, leaning on the desk and shaking her head, "I was a fool. I should have thought, considering that it was that simple. A bond is a bond, be it magical or not. The fundamentals are the same." As she said this her expression darkened, falling as she continued to shake her head, but when she glanced up she seemed to remember Talon was there.

Straightening Lyra cleared her throat, setting the papers down and smoothing her hair back, and fixing her ponytail, "Thank you, Be'melar. I think you may have helped me solve a problem I have struggled with for the past several days." Then, almost as an afterthought, she asked, "Is there a penalty for breaking a bond? Light or Companion?"

Seeing Lyra’s excitement, Talon could only be struck with a great deal of curiosity. What was it about the nature of the Avialae bond that moved her so? He supposed it was a profound thing. To be able to be connected to another person down to their very soul. There were risks but the nature of the bond made most of them fairly moot. Still, it was easy to forget that other people were incapable of understanding or relating to those closest to them the way that Avialae could. It was something he had grown up with. His mother had understood all of his needs as a child because as a boy, he had bonded with her. Just as his brother had. His father understood what he needed and how to guide him as he had grown because they had shared a link as well. While those bonds were no longer in place, the echo of them still helped his family to understand one another on a level that Talon could not imagine not being there.

When Lyra stirred from her excitement and posed her question, Talon stilled. His eyes dropped to the floor as a hand went to touch upon his chest. A shadow passed over his features as he still felt the shuddering echo of the chasm that had been formed in his soul following ripping himself from a Companion bond before.

“Yes.” Short. Direct. The word was ash in his mouth. He remembered well the pain that the severing of that bond had caused him. He remembered the spiral of depression that he had been thrown into. It had torn a hole in his being and he had almost lost himself completely to the dark pit that had formed soul. There were days when he still felt as though he would lose himself to it. It was getting better and he was in a much better place than where he was. It was a hard thing to forget however. It was a reminder of why the Avialae clung so fiercely to those whom they trusted so much of themselves to. He shook himself as he pushed aside those thoughts. Within him, he felt Aoren wrap around the pain that had been stirred from the memories. He welcomed the support and in return he reciprocated it to his bondmate.

“The Bond can be broken. The weaker bonds, Light and Common can be blocked or even severed by a more powerful influence. Companion Bonds are woven so deeply into each partner that interfering with it can happen but it is rare. I have heard no stories of something capable of interfering with a Core Bond.” Talon shrugged his broad shoulders as he took his seat once more. He folded his hands on the surface of the table in front of him. Staring down at his hands he recalled the feel of different hands in his own. The memory of a bright smile and blue eyes. Of an inquisitive mind and a boundless spirit. He let out a breath.

“Avialae can choose to break the bond of their own free will. There is a price for doing so. Light Bonds and Common Bonds are inconsequential for the most part. A downturn in mood for a few days or perhaps a desire to isolate for a short time. Losing a Companion though…” Talon’s hands tightened as that frown returned. “...it is a hard thing to come back from. It is not unheard of for an Avialae who has lost a Companion Bond to fall into a depression for a very long time. As for a Core Bond?”

Talon shook his head.

“I know of no Avialae that has ever survived the loss of one.” He shuddered. “It tears at the soul. You become so much a part of each other that the loss of one becomes the loss of the other. Core Bonded pairs will most often take their own lives if they lose their partner.”

Light bonds, Companion bonds, Core bonds... To think that such a thing existed, and had done so for nearly a season beneath her nose. What's more was the possibility that these bonds could be generated, or manufactured in some way, and be broken or modified. It was exciting, baffling in some respects, but Lyra felt a thrumming in her chest as she began to consider the possibilities.

Perhaps it was the excitement that distracted her, but Lyra did not notice the pain that crossed her student's expression as her question was answered. She wasn't callous, or so she thought, yet she turned away to examine her work once more as he continued his explanation. It seemed she was correct, at least in part. The bonds made the souls recognize the other as a part of themselves. When one was lost it was like losing a limb. Yes, you could survive, but the quality of one's life would dramatically change. Did losing a bond cause a tear in the soul? If so...

Lyra's eyes sparkled as she traced a few lines with her fingers, If the breaking of a bond is like tearing a soul from another... Perhaps it is similar. Bonds could be reformed, pieces fit back together. Then in theory it should be possible that she could...

She was lost in her thoughts for some time, tracing lines with her finger as her mind began to work several steps beyond what lay before her. The implications there, that bonds could be so strong that two could become one was one thing, but that bonds of a certain magnitude could be broken and reformed? It was nearly as exciting as creating entirely new souls through artificial means. Lyra felt it then, an itch in the back of her mind. Something was there, a concept, a thought that was just beyond her reach. It made her frown in concentration as she struggled to grasp it, but like an eel, it slipped from her grasp and wriggled away.

"That man." Lyra said suddenly, turning back to Talon, "The mortal who would know more. What was his name again?"

Talon studied Lyra. She seemed overly fascinated by the subject of the Bond. Then again, could he truly blame her? She was both focused and distracted at the same time which was unusual for one he had come to expect was incisive in nearly everything she did. Whatever it was that was on her mind must have commanded a vast amount of her attention. He stirred from his thoughts, wings stretching and relaxing slightly as he shook off the shadow of unwanted memories.

“Garel of Atoria. He is the one who made us, the Avialae. If stories are to be believed. I know little of him aside from what is written briefly in the pages of our history. My grandfather might know more but…” Talon shrugged his broad shoulders. “Even I have never met him in person.”

Talon had found himself thinking more on his mother’s father as of late. He knew what his father thought of him. He knew the expectations that were laid down before him as the Heir to House Novalys. What he did not know, what he knew nothing of, was the relationship between himself and his maternal side of his bloodline. House Briathos was notoriously secretive. They welcomed few into the halls of Lau’Dai Xhan. If Talon had been born to their direct line, he wondered what his life would have been like.

“My mother tells me that I inherited his wings.” Talon brought up one of his wings. He brushed a hand over the feathers with a soft smile. Releasing his wing he looked back to Lyra.

“Thank you for today, Ale’fira.” Talon bowed his head. “I think that is enough for now. I look forward to our next lesson. I have learned much under your guidance.”

If there was nothing else, Talon gathered his things and set about leaving the shop. He turned in the direction of the Skyforge. There were a few things that he wanted to work through at the forge. Much weighed heavily on his heart and his mind, tending to his craft would help to alleviate the melancholy that he had fallen into.
