Lyra turned her head just enough to look at Rickter, raising an eyebrow before saying simply, "I teach only the scripts. You will need to find another to show you the ways of Flesh." She paused, and then chuckled, "Though I would be careful who I request that service from."

Her attention returned to Telion, "I believe you would make a fine student Si'fera. I welcome you to my shop at any time." She waved a hand at Rickter without looking at him, "That one requires an appointment."

Lyra motioned for both of them to follow her once more, and she lead them toward a door next to one of the shelves. Walking through they entered Lyra's personal workshop. It was spacious, though a large wooden table took up most of the center space. The shelves that lined the walls were filled with scrolls, parchment, stacks of paper, different writing instruments, paints, and any number of tools typically applied in the work of the arts or scribing. On the right wall, there was a long wooden table on top of which sat a series of metal stands. In each was a dragonshard, of greater quality, which hung over a stone plate with glyphs covering its surface. Glyphs also covered the table, as well as the walls and ceiling of this room. From a glance, those with a rune could see the schema was designed for containment.

On the table, itself were several stacks of paper of different varieties, all neat and ordered. There were also several types of ink and writing instruments. Lyra looked behind her at Telion.

"If you do not mind, I would like to see an example of what you," she looked at Rickter, "Both of you are currently capable of. I make no promise that I will tutor you, but I should wish to know if I would waste my time should that actually come about."

She pointed to the shelves, "Different papers are on this shelf, inks of mundane, infused and spellwright quality are on the shelf over there. If you need ink or paint of a particular property I may be able to provide it." She nodded to the long table where the Aetherite, Aerolyth, Aqualyth, Lytirisyte, and Pyrolyth sat. "You may use these stations to perform the investiture steps if you require one of those element types."

Lyra folded her hands in front of her, looking between Telion and Rickter. Artur curled around her shoulders once more, flicking his tongue at them both as she waited to see if there were any questions or objections. Behind her, there was another door, set into the wall. When either Telion or Rickter looked at it, however, they would find their eyes slipping away from it, and steadily they would forget about its presence as they worked on other tasks.

Rickter admittedly looked to Lyra with a hint of intrigue found in his gaze, not just because of how quickly she implied that he'd need another teacher, but due to the nature in warning him of who that teacher was. The wolf knew Sahfri was a woman to be feared deep down in his core, as it had been the most driven instinct in his body when he saw her. Their meeting on the other hand created an interesting situation, as of now, what with Rickter needing to decide if he'd actively use such a macabre art. Necromancy. He didn't think himself able to stomach the concepts overall, but, after what he'd seen Sahfri do and what Necromancy can do in general; there wasn't any sense of denial in the craft's merits.

At being given the compliment Telion lightly chuckled, noticing the sudden hint of aggravation in Rickter's sudden disappointed glare. Appointments? Was she really serious? Regardless, the bard laughed just a bit in turn. "Thank you, lady Lyra. We'll certainly have to make plans then won't we?" Telion teased Rickter in turn with a generous wink complimenting her smile to him, to which the wolf lowly groaned a scoff to signal his bitter amusement with the jests. When motioned to follow, however, both their demeanors changed to that of curious intent. Guided by the shopkeeper towards a door past some of the shelves, they were brought to a room where they looked able to practice magical scripture. From what Rickter could tell the entire room had been decorated with materials, as well as glyphs on certain surfaces, that catered ideally to the art of Scrivening alone.

"Interesting..." He admitted quietly within his breath as his blue eyes fell upon Telion and Lyra then. From the sound of it, the shopkeeper wanted to know what he could do, which admittedly wasn't much when it came to the art of Scrivening overall. Telion's eyes widened as she realized too what Lyra wanted, her gaze falling back within the room as she seemed surprised, with a sense of excitement rising in her eyes as well.

"Oh wow! I didn't expect this!" Truth be told neither did Rickter, and given his predicament he was an unlikely student or pupil at this point. For what good can a wolf do when he barely understands the language of the scripts he's learning to read? "Rickter's not even started yet though, so I hope you don't mind if I give him a few pointers when we begin." The bard almost sounded requesting when she shared that with Lyra, her gaze back on Rickter once more as she tilted her head towards the table within the room. "So how about it? Ready to get your hands dirty Ricky?"

The wolf looked at her inquisitively with a certain lack of confidence, but in seeing the warm and endearing smile she generated, he couldn't help but allow the corners of his lips to loosen into a hint of a grin. "Sure... just... teach me what I need to do first."

"Right! Okay!" Telion practically pumped her fists with enthusiasm, leading the way for the wolf toward the workstation prepared for them. It was while the bard approached the table that Lyra started to explain the room, elaborating on the shelving units and what each shelf contained in regard to the material. Papers, inks, dragonshards... it was a lot to take in for the wolf right away. Yet Telion seemingly nodded as though it wasn't some second language to her at all, understanding the fundamentals of what was provided for her as she looked about in turn. "Very well, we'll start with something basic. Remember the campfire we generated up near the Hot Spring, Ricky?"

As she checked Telion twisted to face toward him, the two looking at one another thoughtfully as the wolf briefly grunted before nodding. "You created a heat source using only marks and runes I've never seen."

"Right! Those were Pictographs, it's a bit of a personal language honestly."

"Care to explain?" The wolf inquired with a tilt of his head.

"Well I'm no expert, but Pictography is the application of runes and scriptures that you create yourself. There's no singular language as the wizard who writes their Pictography, does so through generating their own meanings within certain runes and pictures." Telion emphasized with her arms tucked behind her, her lips curved into a soft grin at him as Rickter looked thoughtful about the concept.

"So, in reality, your scriptures are your own?" Telion nodded in regard to the inquiry. "Hmm. How do we make a fire?" As if on queue Telion turned back to gander at the selection available, taking out only a couple sheets of parchment from the shelves, along with a couple of inkwells of spellwright's ink also. In watching her move about to gather the rest of the materials, Rickter noticed the closed door that lingered within the room as well. Strangely enough, he realized that upon looking at it, he'd failed to notice when he'd already looked back to the bard within the room once more. How odd... He thought to look at it again but, for whatever reason, he found the inclination to do so lacking in turn.

"Okay, here we are." On the center table was all the ingredients she'd gathered from before, two sheets of wide parchment that allowed for room to draw, two inkwells with a couple of paint brushes next to them in between the sheets of parchment, and the pyrolith shard found on the other table within the room. "Normally when I work with Scrivening, I just use my own Runes to power the ink instead. Since you don't have Elementalism yet, Dragonshards will have to suffice in the meantime."

"Okay, so what are the first steps?" Rickter's eyes widened just a bit as he looked nearly lost, if not overwhelmed by the sudden demonstration Telion was about to give.

"Watch closely." The bard warned him before she took one of the brushes, dipping the bristles within the Spellwright’s Ink to get a small portion, and hovering it over the well so any excess ink would drizzle back down into the container. Starting at the center of the parchment, she began drawing a small circle in turn, drawing a line that would jut out from each side of the circle in turn, and then a crescent shape mark that ended at the end of each line. "This isn't the same one I used at the camp, but it's similar within nature of course." She remarked while placing the brush down next to the inkwell, her head lowered so that she could gently blow on the ink to dry it. Within moments after doing so, Telion then brought her hands down to rest at the ends of her Pictograph.

Her palms would come to rest over the drawn crescents of the Pictograph, in turn, generating a soft cerulean glow through them when she breathed in to concentrate. Almost immediately after the ink responded to her aether, Telion managed to channel it through her Elementalism rune, imparting the nature of flame onto the scripture as the cerulean hues turned to fiery orange. From within the center of the circle she'd drawn, a small but robust flame started sparking from the center, emitting the same source of heat and light as it would were it a natural source instead of magical. "By creating a mirror between two paths, I could channel my own aether into these points here."

"What are those points then?" The wolf inquired curiously as he watched the ink react to her aether in awe.

"Actually those were just focal points I drew, I didn't need to generate any sort of convergence this time around." She admitted with a confident smile. "Back at the camp I only had chalk to use, so I had to spend a bit of my personal aether just to power the runes. But! With Spellwright's Ink that isn't necessary, and you can learn how to generate a continuous flame for as long as the ink is charged."

The wolf looked to his paintbrush then, unsure if he would even know where to begin. Noticing this Telion then picked it up and handed it to him, nodding to the table for him to give it a go as the flame she produced died moments later. The wolf hesitated before lowering the brush into the well, hopeful not to waste any of the product itself, as he repeated the same mannerisms as Telion did in a more awkward manner. The bard lightly giggled watching him, standing a little closer as she pointed at a spot at the center of the parchment. "What I'm going to teach you is how to create a similar effect. Start here by drawing a mirror, this'll be where the aetheric energy is reflected and dispersed." In lieu of what she'd told him Rickter drew and moved the brush to hover over the center, starting with the shape of a four-pointed diamond instead of a circle. "Good, now draw a path away from the mirror. The aetheric charge of the shard is what'll pass through that path when we generate our next mirror."

Listening to her Rickter picked one of the corners of the diamond and simply drew almost a curved line away from it, looking to Telion once more as he awaited her own appraisal. Still, the bard just grinned while she watched, nodding for him to continue with the drawing of his next 'mirror' as she called it. In carefully painting another four-pointed diamond, the wolf made sure the lines of his ink all connected with one another as Telion's did, leaving the result to be two diamond shapes connected by a curving line in turn. "Alright, now place that on the outer mirror." She instructed with a finger nudged at the pyrolith shard, to which the wolf reluctantly picked up before doing as told. Holding it in his hand he could feel the heat of the shard itself radiating into his skin, generating a warmth that was almost on the verge of intense when he did.

In placing the shard down, however, the same effect that took place earlier happened moments after. The diamond shape beneath the shard began to glow a brilliant red-orange, as the path connecting to the other mirror took on this dramatic change, before the central mirror, in turn, spouted a small continuous flame from the shard. "Ta-da! You've just made your first Pictograph!" Telion cheered to him almost gleefully now, her eyes alight with pride when she looked at Lyra once again. "What do you think, lady Lyra?"

Almost forgetting that she was still there, Rickter looked to the shopkeeper in turn as well, his eyes softly narrowed as he prepared for whatever scrutiny she might've projected.

"Every side attacks you when you don't pick sides."

With a shrug, Lyra gave her approval of Telion's request. It mattered little to her if they helped one another, though it was telling. This one seemed so free with her knowledge, a trait that Lyra had thought missing from this age.

As they worked Lyra watched on impassively, following the lines as Telion drew, and smiled softly as she saw the small flame flicker to life.

Simplistic, she thought, petting Artur's head, But she has done as I said and followed the basic concepts.

She then watched Rickter follow through with the nearly identical procedure, though modified slightly. This made Lyra raise an eyebrow as she realized that Rickter must not have the same rune as Telion. A curiosity to say the least, though perhaps she should not be surprised.

"Call me Lyra." she replied to Telion when addressed, but folded her arms at her waist as she stepped closer to inspect both of their work. On the papers, there were two small flickering flames, held in place by the charge of the spellwrights ink. Lyra nodded slowly, a thoughtful expression crossing her features.

"It is well done." she said straightening to look at Telion, glancing briefly at Rickter, "The only remark I can give is your choice of ink. Spellwright ink, as I am sure you are aware, is very expensive. This is because it is already awakened to the presence of Aether, and those do not require a mage to be present to activate the pictograph. Because of this its use is primarily for schema which is meant to be long-standing, or permanent, as over time the effects of spellwrights ink do not decay save for when the ink itself begins to succumb to physical forces."

Lyra walked around the table, taking a vial of ink from the shelf, and selecting a fine-tipped quill as well. She then took a small sheet of paper and began to create a simple design on its surface. As she worked on this she continued to speak, unintentionally falling into an old lecturing mode from ages past.

"So many who practice the scripts give too much emphasis to the scripts themselves, and not enough to the materials on which they are inscribed. There are many factors that go into a final product, and if one does not select the proper materials then the final glyph will only be somewhat effective in its intended purpose. As I previously said, spellwrights ink is already awakened to aether, and is typically used in scripts which require only routine maintenance over time such as in the protections in a magical laboratory, or like what you see on this room."

She finished the pictograph on this piece of paper. It was depicted as a stylized eye with radiating circles leading out from it. At the edges of the circles were further lines flowing outward, though as they reached their terminating point the ink thinned to the point that the lines completely faded. From a drawer, Lyra pulled a small, barely glowing dragonshard of the lowest quality. She pressed this shard down onto the pictograph, which shimmered. There was a pulse in the air that felt like a small shockwave. The larger dragonshards on the table barely flickered, but the small flame from Rickter's pictograph was snuffed out as the glyphs shimmered and faded.

The small dragonshard shattered, and Lyra casually dusted her hands of the debris as she pulled another thin piece of paper of thicker stock from the shelf, beginning on a new design.

"For things such as temporary scrolls, and some wands and other devices one is better off using infused ink produced through Alchemy. It is less expensive, and additional effects can be added directly to the ink before the pictograph is drawn. There is a lot of flexibility in its use, though unlike spellwrights ink it will steadily grow weaker over time. Most magic scrolls are produced this way, typically combined with a type of paper to compliment the ink and glyph."

The design on this paper was more intricate. There was a stylized circle at the top with a picture of a tiny flame with a few markings at its center. This linked down to another picture of a diamond with symbols on each facet. The upper half of the paper was rimmed with a series of lines that curled back and collected at the circle. Then there was a small pathway leading down from the blocked off part of the glyph to a square that had a half-formed circle inside. Where it linked with the larger glyph was another small symbol like a door, made of simple lines. When this was complete she walked over to Telion's page, drawing a series of glyphs around her own work, and creating a stylized flame around the entire thing.

"In Rickter's case... He required the use of the pyrolyth dragonshard. Spellwrights ink was not necessary. Infused Ink, or even mundane ink, would have sufficed as being presented to the shard would have awakened the pictograph and the ink itself."

With a flick of her wrist, Lyra finished her design. Breathing out a stream of black smoke fell over the page Telion had worked on, the glyphs on it glowing briefly before fading. She then lifted the other page with the more intricate design, bringing it close to Telion's which began to shimmer. Then, all at once, the page with Telion's pictograph shattered to dust, flowing up and being drawn into the swirling pattern of the circle on the page in Lyra's hand. When the last bit of light faded Lyra looked back at Rickter and Telion.

With a smile she held the page up between two fingers, flicking her thumb over the small pictograph at the bottom of the page with the half-circle. The top of the paper became alight with flame, burning steadily though the paper beneath it did not crumble or break down.

"Infused ink combined with pictographs made to capture and incorporate linked glyph pairs, contained and given partial activation requirements through physical signals outside the range of the effect. The paper itself is crafted from a special wood from the 2nd deep in the Warrens which is fire resistant." With a flick of her thumb the page stopped burning, and Lyra extended it toward Telion, "As you can see, the material must suit the purpose as much as the pictograph itself. Never underestimate the right ink and paper for the right project."

Telion's expression shifted to light confusion, before she realized her own etiquette had sparked the reaction. In recognizing this she nodded in return, noting to call her by her name next time. Rickter still would've stuck with something like smoke-walker, whatever would've likely grated her nerves a bit... since she liked to nag him on. In hearing the beginning of her observation, Telion grinned a bit, pausing to await the rest as she expected to come. Rickter simply stood and watched with his eyebrows comfortably resting over his eyes, about as he simply awaited the expectant prods bound to come his way.

So apparently the ink Telion had chosen was a particular kind, if it were so expensive then perhaps making it was easier somehow. Now the wolf started to look intrigued at this, minding the explanation further with the elaboration of the schema. So something like that could've easily powered their campfire throughout the night. Telion gazed mindfully at Lyra as she continued, nodding receptively to her lesson as she watched the expert at work. "I see," she replied softly, "so that means the components are the key to the scriptures."

"Which means they're great for outstanding wards." The wolf remarked with an apt eye on Lyra for a moment, before lowering his gaze in a slight smirk. Telion studied the layout Lyra used with intrigue, as Rickter observed it inquisitively as he watched her take out a small dragonshard. Once Lyra pressed it down a momentary shimmer resulted in a soft burst of energy, pulsating through their bodies as Rickter and Telion looked at the release of that force. The small burst was enough to snuff out the flame, as the one dragonshard crumbled away beneath her finger. Damn, that's wicked! He admitted to himself with a slight raise to his eyebrows.

Right away the woman was leading on into another lesson, this one involving alchemy's application for the creation of ink. "Huh!" Telion tapped at the side of her head in thought for a moment. "Never even thought of that." She waited for Lyra to finish the lesson of course on the differences in inks, as well as the emphasis made on the combination of tools such as papers, inks, and glyphs. It took a moment for it to fully sink in for Rickter, but he felt at least able to grasp it in practice. Still, he wondered...

"How does one make spellwright ink?" He inquired thoughtfully with a bit of a more personable look at her, his line of sight almost meeting her in a steady sense of respect. In asking this he and Telion observed the designing of this new glyph being drawn, the pair listening closely to the choice of ink in regards to Rickter's case. So with dragonshards, it was possible to have a simple construct like what Telion drew that night. Only she had to charge it with an anchor at that time, or so she had described it to him somehow. In seeing the final touches of her design they watched, and much to Rickter's discomfort, witnessed as she breathed out a bit of that black smoke she could spew. The wolf felt a chill tickle at the base of his spine, almost as though the canine senses in him tingled for a moment.

Putting on the display she created they both were amazed, Rickter in a slightly terrified way as Telion seemed delighted. "Oh, wow!" She exclaimed observantly when the parchment was presented to her. "I see now, it's not just about the glyph structures or pictographs. The materials themselves serve as a staple basis."

"I think I'm gettin' the hang of this." The wolf thought aloud as he still grasped the concept.

"Every side attacks you when you don't pick sides."

"Spellwright's Ink is a product of Runeforging." Lyra said, resting a hand on her hip as she looked at Rickter with a raised eyebrow, "Infused ink is made using Alchemy. Both serve a purpose, and it is possible to create different sorts of ink through the use of other disciplines as well. This shop for instance sells a variety of inks, supplied by others, and a few I make myself."

Looking between Telion and Rickter Lyra smiled a small smile before patting Artur on the head, "I believe that is a sufficient enough lesson for the day. If I were to go any further I am afraid I would be forced to charge, lest I insult my other patrons." Her eyes lingered on Telion, "As I said before, the offer is extended. If you wish to receive further instruction then we can come to an arrangement. There are other tasks I require assistance with, and if you were to, perhaps, take on a few from time to time I would be inclined to consider the lessons as payment."

It was clear that the lessons were over as Lyra walked past both of her guests, waving for them to follow her back out into the main shop. When they had all arrived outside Lyra would shut the door once more, moving to a shelf and beginning to return to her previous work. As she did though she would say, "You have heard my recommendations as to the materials. Feel free to look as you please, and ask if you have any questions. The basic materials are on the shelves behind you, but if you would like any custom works then we shall discuss further."

The pair watched Lyra with varying levels of curiosity on the topic, having learned the basics to scrivening proved a pleasant surprise for Rickter. From what he gathered he would have to either learn how to Runeforge, or do Alchemy, if he wanted to be able to create a substantial variety of useful ink. To think he'd never really bothered utilizing any of these materials before, when in fact they could very easily make his daily life just a bit easier in turn. Not that he was oblivious to the presence of magical utensils and whatnot, otherwise how did water run hot from faucets or lights within shops power on for that matter? Magic was such an integrated part of everyday life in Kalzasi, that he didn't outright think about just how prevalent of a presence it maintained initially.

Telion nodded after Lyra concluded her lesson, and gave the shopkeep a modest bow forward in appreciation afterward. "Thanks so much Lyra, I learned a lot today, as I'm sure Rickter did too."

Almost as soon as he heard his name his eyes averted timidly, his lips on the verge of a wry frown as he emitted a groan in the form of a 'yes' to her. With the elaboration on Lyra's offer though, the bard's lips perked into an honest smile as she nodded once more. "Oh that would be much helpful, honestly!" Rickter started to look at her apprehensively but he remained silent on the matter, knowing well that extra jobs meant extra... whatever came his way eventually. Mercenary work was finicky in that regard, since the rewards were often whatever was easier for the provider to pay with. In this case, though it wasn't that bad of a deal in his eyes, not since he'd get to earn some materials or maybe even a trinket or two. "Rickter and I are freelancers, so as you can imagine good work can get difficult to find."

Come the time for them to step out and return to the salesfloor of the shop, the pair nodded in response to the final bit of Lyra's conversation, with Telion eyeing Rickter expectantly before she turned to face the shelves. "Alright Ricky, why don't we cover the needed essentials this time, maybe work a bit more in for later practices?"

"Sounds good..." The wolf murmured lowly with his nose pointed down, and eyes forward as he observed the bard, the pair later bringing their essentials to the front desk afterward. Before too long they would leave on a good note with the shopkeep, with Rickter still quietly mindful of Lyra even as they exited.

Your Review

Ah, yes, Mistress Lyra at her best: calling Rickter a puppy.

Can I assume Sh'minal means beautiful or something similar? I mean I'm usually dumb so I have to ask as I delve deeper into Ancient Vallenor.

I've also come to realize that Scrivnering is really quite complicated and I don't know if I will ever truly get the hang of it, but maybe I could get a lesson from Lyra. Rickter can come too, if he comes in beast form so I have an emotional support friend. Rickter did surprise by being attentive, but maybe Telion just has him well trained lmao
