5 Searing 121

The cold northern winds ghosted over the feathers of Talon’s wings as he soared through the skies of the Cloudhaven District. Below him, the city of Kalzasi was coming alive with the rise of the morning sun. Today would be a long day. It would be a day filled with as many questions as there were answers. It had not been a day that he was looking forward to. He banked to the left, flapping his wings to help guide his flight path in the direction of his destination. In the skies around him, various other Avialae, Fae and even Rathari in their avian forms, were flying in carefully navigated paths. These people were going about their business as they began the day running errands, soldiers beginning their skybound patrols, and people just generally getting their morning exercise. It comforted Talon to know that people could still go about their daily lives even with so much going on in the world.

Talon ascended higher and his thoughts turned to events as of late. The diplomatic mission to Zaichaer had been a disaster. His companion and bondmate had nearly been killed. People had been searching for reasons to riot at every turn. The near palpable desire to refuse any efforts at diplomacy and to find common ground, had been daunting. Talon had returned late last season and had remained mostly quiet and removed from the public eye. He had turned his attention to nursing those he loved back to health. He had been in quiet meetings with his father and some of his advisers. His father’s disappointment in the failure of the mission had cut into Talon’s heart deeply, even if the Shokaze had not believed it would be a success to begin with. But that was not what had troubled them the most.

Talon had revealed his nimbus openly and without reservation in front of Zaichaeri soldiers. He had revealed the truth of their suspicions so as to remove any doubt about what he had become. This, coupled with the rumors of what had been circulating among the realm’s peerage for months, had moved the Elder Council to act. News had begun to reach them of the movements of people making their way toward a settlement in the Wildking’s Forge, a settlement that once belonged to the fabled Order of the Dawnmartyr. Talon had known it would only be a matter of time. He had dreaded that time, but he had known it would come. People were beginning to connect the dots and events as of late had all but confirmed suspicions.

Talon ascended even higher until he was rising into the clouds of the Cloudhaven District. As he breached their surface, a commanding structure drew his attention. It stood upon one of the many Astralar floating isles, a place reachable only through means of flight or through one of the teleportation gateways that brought flightless people to one of its platforms.

The Hall of Wisdom. Seat of the Council of Elders who governed over all matters of Kalzasi. With the Shokaze presiding over the council and the Daizoku handling all things brought before them, this was where the power of Kalzasi’s influence was at its strongest, the seat of their government. As Talon neared the Hall, several armored Avialae guards came down out of the clouds to escort him to the platform. No one, not even he, was allowed to approach the Hall of Wisdom unchallenged, even if he had been summoned by invitation. It was a custom that Talon had observed many times and he glided into the appropriate flight path without need for prompting.

Talon angled himself to make a comfortable descent down onto the platform, spreading his wings in order to slow his fall. He landed easily, folding his wings in close as the Master-at-Arms of the platform guard came forward. The sky escort that had guided him to the platform did not descend but swerved and continued back into the air to resume their posts. The Master-at-Arms was flanked by two armored Avialae and when he was just a few feet away, he came to a stop and bowed. Talon inclined his head.

“I am Soraken Pasha, Officer of the Watch. Welcome honored guest, to the Hall of Wisdom. What is your business?”

I am Talon, Heir to Savien, First Son of House Novalys.” Talon withdrew the scroll that had been penned by none other than Daizoku Tizan Veyl, Speaker of the Council. He extended it to the watch commander who took it smoothly. Reading over it, Soraken Pasha nodded his head. He withdrew a silver whistle and blew into it producing a soft musical note four times. From atop the ramparts of the gate, four Avialae leapt into the air then glided down to stride forward. Each of them stepped forward and bowed to which Talon returned with a nod of his head. One of the men separated himself from the others, offering another bow.

“I am Hakumo Yoriatsu. I will be your escort. You are expected before the Daizoku, my Shinsei. Please, come this way.” Talon strode forward, tucking his wings in close as he made his way across the platform and over the black stone bridge that connected it to the gate leading up to the Hall of Wisdom. Passing through the gate, the feathers of his wings stood on end briefly as he could feel the enchantments that had been placed upon it. The Hall of Wisdom was a marvel of Avialae skyborn architecture. On the main island stood the Hall itself, a palatial building that served as the seat of the territory’s government. It housed the offices of the Elder Council, the throne room of the Shokaze, the Council Chambers, and of course the main offices of the various departments that managed the city and its territory. Around the main island was a floating ring upon which stood an eberrite wall that was heavily enchanted both by House Briathos and the Circle of Spells. The wall created a barrier for which there were only two points of exit and entry. Several smaller islands floated in front of the gate, serving as greeting platforms for visitors. No one was allowed to pass through the gate without escort, not the Shokaze, not the Daizoku and certainly not Talon.

As they approached the steps leading up to the Hall of Wisdom itself, Talon felt at peace with what lay ahead of him. He had been summoned by the Shokaze and the Elder Council to speak on matters concerning the State. Exactly what those matters were, Talon had a fairly clear idea. He was ready and he would speak true to his actions and to what he felt was the right path for their people. When they entered the Hall of Wisdom itself, Talon took a moment to admire the architecture and the decorations. No matter how many times he saw it, the sight filled him with pride. The Hall itself was not built to be ostentatious. The interior, while grand and luxurious in design, took a minimalistic approach to its grandiosity. Instead, the focus was on the banners and symbols of the many noble houses that governed Kalzasi and its territories. Hanging above the tall double doors leading into the Council Chamber itself were the banners of the Seven Great Houses, with the banner of his family hanging center and slightly larger than the others to signify its status as the ruling family.

As soon as he approached, the honor guard standing beside the doors came alive. They pushed opened the doors and Talon stood at the threshold. Talon was briefly shocked at the amount of people inside. At the far end on a raised and tiered platform sat his father, garbed in the vestment of Sovereign and staring down upon all who gathered as the Shokaze and supreme lord of all Kalzasi. On the tier just beneath him sat two other Daizoku.

Daizoku Tizan Veyl, Speaker and Head of the Elder Council.

...and Daizoku Pavel Senue, the Highlord of the family second only to Talon’s own though not by much.

Below them were assembled the other four Daizoku, all of whom Talon knew by name. There was the old and wise Haruhiro Dahshida whose eyes immediately fell upon Talon. He did not flinch away from that gaze but met it steadily to which Talon received a nod from his Great Uncle. Next came the wise and gentle Marda Ahtivin, the widowed Daizokura of House Ahtivin. Despite her advanced age for a human, she looked as healthy and alert as ever. As their gazes met, Talon saw in her many questions which came as no surprise to him. She was a High Priestess of Ioniri, a woman of the gods. No doubt the subjects brought up in this session would receive intense scrutiny from her.

Next, Talon’s gaze came to meet Vako Zatrian, Kalzasi’s brightest mind. A glint of curiosity and the ever present twinkle of mischief that seemed to dance at the corners of his mouth met Talon’s stare. Finally, Talon met the gaze of someone who both fascinated and terrified him in ways that he could not describe. Briathor IV sat quietly, dressed in the blacks and royal blues of his House. His silver wings were folded behind him and his stare, when it met Talon’s, sent a spark of electricity and a shiver down his spine. He suppressed the urge to shrink away from that gaze. Even without calling upon his Semblance, Talon could feel the power in his grandfather with just that one stare. The man stared at Talon impassively, a statue of cold authority and an enigma as he always had been.

Talon then glanced to the other occupants of the room. The chamber had pews that formed a semicircle around the central dais where the Shokaze and the Daizoku were seated. This allowed them a full view of the central chamber where matters were debated before the council in full. Talon saw the Hatakomon families represented. He saw the Koiteki families represented. He saw representation from every Kozoku family as well. The whole of Kalzasi’s peerage was present to bear witness to what was unfolding. Talon just breathed. He came forward to stand before the dais of the Shokaze and the Daizoku. After a moment’s pause to allow silence to settle upon the chamber, Talon knelt. He crossed a hand over his chest, touching his palm to his heart and bowed his head.

My Shokaze.” There was silence for a moment before the voice of Tizan Veyl carried through the chamber.

“With your blessing, Shokaze, I will bring this council to order.” His father’s voice followed.

“It is given.” Talon rose to his feet then so that he could face the assembled proudly. He met the eyes of the Speaker of the Council as he rose to his feet. Tizan’s wings shifted slightly as he straightened his official garb.

“Come now, to order. Let all be silent as the Daizoku of the Realm of Kalzasi make their voices heard.” Tizan raised his hands ushering a hush into the already quiet hall, silencing mutterings.

“Talon Alexios Novalys, Son of Savien, First Son of House Novalys, today we sit in council to address the concerns that you and your actions have brought forth into this realm. I Speak for this Council but I do not Speak alone. Are you prepared to answer for the concerns brought forth?”

I am.” Talon kept his head high as he regarded the assembled.

“Then let us begin.”

Behind him, Talon heard the doors to the Council Chamber close. The thud of the great doors closing tugged at something in his heart. He felt as though more eyes than just those assembled were watching. Maybe there were.

Korvaelis Dahshida

It was the first time he had ever asked him for anything.

Aki had always been a very independent child, who kept to himself. This had nothing to do with the two’s relationship, the Avialae child was most likely approaching an age where he preferred to hold everything in rather than speak to an adult about his issues and Korvaelis didn’t find that as too much of a problem. It only means that when he did speak up and ask for his help, Korvaelis is inclined to do it. But he did not expect him to ask for such a big favor--a favor that involved him interacting with the people he dreads most in the city. The higher-ups. The dowager was sure they were not bad people. It was just their titles and status that spread fear throughout his entire body and caused him to shiver whenever he even thought about their existence. He often thought about the power they all possessed and how much of this city they could access.

He would rather stay out of their way.

Anyway, Aki must’ve overheard his grandfather or uncles speaking about something. The day before, he had decided to visit the main house to spend time with the Daizoku and Korvaelis saw him off. It seemed he had returned in a blink of an eye that night, calling for Korvaelis as he continued his night routine.

“Something is going on, I was dismissed from Yorunorei.”

The boy was exhausted by the time he reached him, the young lord could tell he scurried back as soon as possible.

“As the dowager koiteki, my father put you in a position to pay attention to all politics. Please figure out what's going on. That is all I ask.”

Aki spoke so properly that morning as if he were older. the avialae child kept his plea simple as well. That was no surprise though, he always carried himself like a more mature male rather than his age. However, he did not expect the child to guilt-trip him into attending this meeting that he felt was not his business. He was sure that his brother-in-law and father-in-law had a handle on the situation. Most likely, Aki was panicking and turning the situation into a bigger deal than what it was in the first place. But he had a point. Korvaelis should be more involved as a Koiteki.

He would be present, but after he took care of himself to properly represent the Dahshida. There was no connection to the house by blood, but the name alone meant that he should represent them proudly. Even if there were most likely so many presents; the Daizoku being the most important one of all. Korvaelis cleaned his face up with makeup, pulled his hair into a bun with pins and hair ties adorn with the onyx stone. He found a simple yet beautiful grey embroidered robe and slippers, giving himself a look before exiting the house and making his way to the cloudhaven district.

While Avialae soared through the air to reach the hall of wisdom, Korvaelis took the portal there, and shortly after, he found himself being escorted by guards. The guards followed him closely as he took long strides, holding his head up and keeping his hands inside his sleeves, holding his arms at abdomen level. He kept facing forward and did his best to keep a straight face. It was hard considering the amazing view that surrounded him. If he could compare it to anything, Korvaelis wouldn’t be afraid to compare the buildings and architecture of this district to the heavenly planes. It was a shame there were most likely parts of this district he probably could not access assuming a great deal required wings.

Soon he would reach a large room with many people who came before him. Upon entering the room, a few would stare at him. He shivered a bit yet still bowed to anyone who would see him before striding to a seat in a secluded area--he couldn’t move fast enough.

“I heard the Shokaze’s son committed a heinous act.”

The people in front of him began whispering amongst each other and since he had no one to talk to, Korvaelis began eavesdropping.

“I heard Zaichaer is at the city gates!”

“I heard the lords cannot back up our military.”

The more he eavesdropped, the more outrageous the claims were becoming. Nonetheless, he didn’t know what was going on and all he could do was hope for the best. Eventually, the noise would die down as everyone’s attention turned to a man he had never seen before.

What will happen next...

"It will be alright, my wolf." Were the whispered words that pulled Rickter from the minor lapse his thoughts took him down. Things were developing in a manner that he never suspected, but should've, given the circumstances that led everyone to this very day. Damn him. No... Them. Rickter had not forgotten about his aggressors that night, nor the repercussions their attempt brought on to his comrades. Not to mention his dear Bondmate. Naturally the wolf was under a bit his own stress, feeling largely a major part of this gathering today, for all his shortcomings brought nothing but unwanted attention to Talon. Pair that with the fact that he was out of his element here, literally, as the game of politics was playing at large here. Aoren sat beside him within the pews that House Novalys had accompanied, theirs was one of the first toward the front row where the whole session would go down.

Talon had yet to arrive but he would be here quite soon, and when that happened, things that the wolf had no concept of control over would transpire. How would he protect his precious Bondmate if there were scrutiny from among the other houses? Better yet, what should he expect of Talon in this whole affair? Even as nerve wrecked as he was he could still sense the calm emotions of both him and Aoren now, soothing him of the worries at large as the Knight Captain himself rested a hand on the wolf's shoulder momentarily. "We knew this time would come." It was true after all, and when he said it, Rickter looked to the man next to him with a surly expression. The developments that transpired over the past several seasons, which even the rest of the nobles presented still murmured on about every brief once in a while. There just so many voices here that were all quiet, yet even so, their whispers were the faintest tickles to Rickter's ears as he sat there and waited.

They were briefed by Tarshenna on what to expect for today prior to bed last night, and having learned that everyone throughout the Great Noble families would be present. Having come here by teleporation he had been accompanied by Aoren the entire time, as obviously Telion nor Hannah was permitted to attend such an event. Not that the wolf envied them, he would've rather sit this out if he could. Though, the thought already felt mocked by Hannah's usual banter, and even wondered if she'd ever attempt to restore her lost nobility. "I know..." He admitted begrudgingly in a low tone, as his blue eyes wandered from where the Shokaze and other Daizoku sat. So many had gathered that Rickter's nose nearly itched, as his acute sense of smell could trace... well, call it an entire spectrum of aroma. The most prominent and the one he was thankful for was the sharp ozone, and the crisp mountain air that always clung around those within the Novalys family.

The rest though were all entirely foreign to him, and perhaps that also instilled such unruly anxiety within his gut. Still, he looked to see that the prince himself had finally arrived, his entrance strongly representing the ideal traditions that accompanied that of his family. Rickter felt honored to be a part of that even within his own doubt, and he wouldn't let that stop him from loosening up the moment his eyes fell on Talon. "Proud as ever he is." Aoren might've kept a chuckle to himself as the two of them seemed to lightly grin, the wolf himself drawing in a deep breath, only to exhale it through his nostrils with a lean forward. "No matter the endeavor we still face obstacle after obstacle, and now it seems that's finally caught up with us." He quietly figured in his thoughts as the wolf adjusted the cuffs of his sleeve, rolling them back to his elbows as he rested them atop his knees. Their attire had to be formal at least, but certainly not the Skyforge Raiments that Rickter expected to wear here.

Apparently, and this came from Tarshenna at the time as well, he and Aoren were both only here to witness as patrons of House Novalys. However, that didn't mean it would stop the wolf from doing whatever was necessary, in the event he did happen to find his beloved bondmate in the jaws of danger once more. The wolf would make damn sure of that, even as he sat patiently with his chin rested atop his clasped hands. "What happens today could only determine something unknown," He admitted as he could only speculate what the Council wanted to discern from recent events, "whatever it is you have planned Talon..." As his eyes flicked back from the Council toward Talon, Rickter's gaze gently narrowed on the one at the center of all this. "I just hope only good things come of it."

Yet the feeling in his gut never did subside.

“Talon Alexios Novalys, Shinsei by the Shokaze’s declaration, Heir to the House of Synnar, First Son of the Novalys Bloodline, you were sent with the blessing of this Council to represent our people in the courts of Zaichaer.” Tizan Veyl’s voice carried through the chamber easily enough. The man had been performing on the stage of politics for the entirety of his adult life. As an Avialae, he was not known for his prowess as a warrior but for his shrewdness and his ability to secure the interests of Kalzasi politically. It was thank, in large part, to the work of this particular Daizoku that Kalzasi enjoyed the benefit of many strong trade relations.

That is correct, Daizoku.” Talon remembered being given the mission by his father. While at first Talon had seen it as something wildly out of his element, he understood the necessity of it. He needed to engage with the powers of Karnor. He could not remain insular to matters concerning strictly Kalzasi. If he was to one day take over as the Highlord of House Novalys then he needed to be able to understand how to navigate the Northland’s politics at large. The Speaker for the Council nodded his head as he stepped down from the platform where each of the Highlords of Kalzasi were seated.

“When you arrived, how would you describe your reception?” He remembered it well. Almost as soon as his ship had crossed into Zaichaeri territory, the escort had been launched to fly alongside them. It had been a fully military escort to match the Icewing eagles and entourage that had accompanied Talon. All the same however, the journey to the City of Brass proper had been an eye opening experience.

They made a point to showcase the ingenuity of their skyships. The ease with which they could deploy troops onto the deck of my ship was made clear. They were highly organized and able to jump from their vessel to mine in a matter of moments. Additionally, as they were guiding us along their route, I was able to see at least two heavily armed garrisons that were positioned strategically along the route.” Tizan nodded his head as though he had expected that answer. Talon imagined that the man was far more informed about the movement of Zaichaeri forces that he was. As Speaker for the Council, Tizan Veyl and his father were the two figures that most readily guided the direction of Kalzasi’s resources.

“And when you arrived to the city?” Talon could remembered it in his head clearly. The dreadnought, their newest variation, had been proudly on display for all to see. It had been an impressive feat of scientific engineering that Talon had no doubt would be able to decimate enemies in the skies. Just judging from the ports he had seen from a distance and the armaments on the deck, the ship’s battlements no doubt could rain down an aerial bombardment capable of decimating ground troops.

The Searing Victory, they call it. A dreadnought warship that was decorated to greet a diplomatic envoy arriving at their military airfield. It was...concerning to behold.” That was putting it politely. As soon as Talon had seen it, he had known exactly what it was for. That was not merely a patrol ship. That was an instrument of absolute war meant to blast opponents out of the sky. Sky pirates were already starting to alter their behavior because of the latest advancements Zaichaer had made to their aerial capabilities.

“And you were greeted cordially?” Talon nodded his head.

“Upon accepting the mission to Zaichaer, you were informed of its views on the practice of sorceries and enchantments?” Tizan ceased walking back and forth. He came to stop at the stairs of the platform so that he could eye Talon directly. Talon did not flinch from that stare.

I am well versed on Zaichaer’s views on the practice of magic, Daizoku.” One of the Speaker’s eyebrows arched.

“And yet, practically on your first day there, we are informed that you used the gift of Kinetics to intervene in an accident that transpired within the heart of their airship factory?” Talon resisted the urge to clench his jaw. He recalled the event very clearly. It had seemed very eerily timed in his opinion.

You are correct, Daizoku. A man fell from the rafters of a ship’s scaffolding.

“I am told there were safety measures put in place to prevent injury?” Talon rest his hands behind his back, exhaling steadily.

I was informed after the event that there were safety measures put in place. Measures, I would add, that at the time did not function. I acted on instinct to save a man’s life.” The Speaker quirked his head.

“And in so doing, escalated tensions directly following a massacre that Zaichaeri are referring to as Glade the 8th.” Talon had heard of the terrible events that had transpired following the Zaichaeri’s officials attempts to burn a woman at the stake. She had unleashed eldritch powers that had slaughtered dozens of people and left the authorities of the city baffled as to how their control measures had been subverted.

“Directly following this day, I am told that you rejected transportation provided to you by the State of Zaichaer and instead opted to walk through the streets of the city. Where you were then accosted by a mob of civilians that had heard of your display of powers at the factory.” Talon frowned. He did not like the way that Tizan Veyl was painting that particular image.

A tightly enclosed vehicle with little room for maneuverability whose protections had not been verified by our attending staff. It was safer and more feasible to travel the streets by foot, where myself and my entourage could maneuver quickly and utilize our skills to protect ourselves and assess the situation freely.” Tizan nodded his head as he continued. Exactly what the man was trying to put together, he did not know. But Talon had a feeling that it was not good.

“You confronted this mob, again openly displaying--”” Talon interrupted the man.

You are incorrect, Daizoku.” Talon watched as a muscle in Tizan’s face twitched.

“I beg your pardon, Lord Talon?” The Speaker’s eyes narrowed and Talon knew that he had struck a nerve. Tizan was well known for his dislike of being interrupted but there was a part of the man’s statement that he would not let pass.

I did not confront the mob. Nor did I engage it at all. My bodyguard erected a barrier following the discharge of firearms, a gun that was fired by a Zaichaeri Officer to quell the mob. Following this, I gave a direct order to disengage and return to the embassy.” The Speaker of the Council let out a breath. He waved away the statement dismissively.

“You risked yourself and the diplomatic entourage because of your refusal to follow Zaichaeri protocol.” Talon narrowed his eyes.

Zaichaer’s laws allow for the use of non-destructive powers to act in defense of government interests. As a diplomatic envoy of a foreign state, myself and my entourage were of interest to the Zaichaer government at the time. The use of Negation to create a barrier to protect ourselves was authorized. A fact you are well aware of, Daizoku.” Tizan narrowed his eyes as he regarded Talon. The young demigod now had a fair idea of what sort of picture that the Speaker of the Council was trying to paint. At least, he thought he did.

“That does not negate the fact that twice, after being there only two days, you made decisions that jeopardized the integrity of the diplomatic mission, fully aware of how sensitive the relations between our two nations are.” Talon opened his mouth to speak but both he and Tizan were silenced as another voice chimed in. The voice of a woman, soft but clearly heard.

“Speaker.” Talon looked to see the Daizokura Marda Ahtivin staring down at him intently. “Broad is your statement. We find it overly generalized. It does not put justice to the context of the matter at hand. Whether the Shinsei had ridden in a carriage or whether he had taken to the skies, it is a stretch to say that this incident of chance rests upon his shoulders.”

Tizan regarded Marda with a bland look.

“Venerable Daizokura--” She held up a hand bringing the man to cease speaking.

“What was to say the mob would not have assaulted the embassy? You stated it yourself. Glade the 8th was a terrible tragedy that baffled even the authorities of Zaichaer. What was to say the mob would not have attacked the carriage? What was to say the mob would not have shot our Shinsei out of the sky? No. We reject this rhetoric and strike it from the record. These are not examples of consequence but examples of circumstance. Does the Council concur?” Four other voices spoke up as she made her proposal.

“Agreed.” Daizoku Dahshida.

“Agreed.” Daizoku Zatrian.

“Agreed.” Daizoku Briathos.

“Agreed.” Talon’s father.

"We see value in examining the Lord Talon's actions, however, we acknowledge that these examples are perhaps the consequences of mere circumstance." Daizoku Senue regarded Talon with careful scrutiny, his hands folded in his lap.

“Thank you, Daizoku Senue. Your concerns are noted. However, the motion is passed. The rhetoric is struck. Fairness we shall grant, Speaker. Fairness is our duty and our charge.” Tizan regarded the other Daizoku for a moment before bowing. That was a sharp a rebuke as Talon had ever heard from the Daizokura of House Ahtivin but he was grateful for it. He had to admire her. The feelings that Marda Ahtiving must have had with regard to House Novalys were undoubtedly complex but she was a woman well known for her grace and compassion.

“So it is spoken.” Tizan turned to regard Talon once more. Talon readied himself for the next round of questions that would be presented. Now he knew what to expect. He only hoped he had the fortitude to defend himself and his actions, to defend the honor of his House and prove that he was not bringing shame and disgrace to Kalzasi.

As the ranking representative of House Leukos, Kala sat among the Hatakomon. Her brother, for once, hadn't needed her to harangue him into attending an official event. While more comfortable sparring and flying and such, he knew that even if he was only the third child of their House, he would have to be aware of politics within and without the realm. They were still as statues, the young twins—a small woman and her slender brother, who was small for an Avialae, at least. She watched the sea of luminaries through the lens of her rune, observing the currents of power, both political and aetheric.

The Kozoku, the Koiteki, the Hatakomon close by, and up through the Great Lords and Lady, and their Shokaze. She paid keen attention to Briathor IV, as her House owed their fealty to his. All the same, this was her first time seeing him in the flesh, and she studied him with greater attention than all the others. He was the aegis under which her family enjoyed a lack of scrutiny, that they might experiment on Starfall and build their silent strength. Perhaps one day, they would be self-sufficient enough to declare their independence, to form an alliance with Kalzasi but maintain their own autonomy far into the mountains. But that day was likely beyond hers.

For now, they had to survive and knowledge was a key to that door.

The relic dangling from her wrist seemed almost to tingle, though it might have been her imagination, as the doors swung open to admit the Shinsei. She hadn't seen him in some time, and now that she Saw him, she believed the stories. He was more powerful than the quiet Ara who had visited her twice at the skyborn temple, and his ascension gave her mixed feelings. On the one hand, she thought him worthy; on the other, there were invariably repercussions to such power as they were then to witness.

Had he made eye contact with her, she might have offered a smile of support. All she knew of him from firsthand experience was that he was a good man, but she had no real power in this room. She could only observe.

She frowned, though, when words spoken were stricken from the record. Let them be dismissed, perhaps, but they ought to be recorded for posterity. But the people in power would control the narrative of history. Of this, she had no doubt.

I tell you: one must still have chaos within oneself,
to give birth to a dancing star.

Mino had not been pleased to know he would be in attendance for this. His patience, usually comparable to a god by his own admission, was worn thin. A heat he'd never be able to sweat out sweltered just beneath his skin. Bubbled in his bones and simmered through muscles. The trace amounts of medicinal relief he'd been given were eaten up by his system and running their course too fast for him to be comfortable. Sure, the elevated location provided him with some of the cool breeze that the Avialae that had founded their bountiful city for which all this nobility adhered to attending this meeting for, but he was hot all over and everything reeked. The air, the perfumes of the people around him, the hall itself. The stench of repeated masses moving in and out for special occasions before the room was locked up tight again.

He drew in a deep breath through his mouth, leaned further back in his seat. As a member of a Hatakomon house, his attendance was necessary. Lady Blue's was even more so, but the woman beside him bore their house colors with a hint of green. Green to match the color of her skin and accent the blue and white. Her smile was congenial as her gaze trained in on the proceedings. The caracal stared down at his own clothes, his boots. Watched as he shifted one foot in a disjointed circle as one leg bounced atop the other. Even the fabric over his skin was insufferable. Everything felt like it was sticking to his skin. From the neat fitting pants, carefully pressed earlier. Mino's hands smoothed over the broad sash, finding minute comfort in the feel of it against his fingers before he felt Lady Sage's hands absently adjust the chiffon-covered opening of his blouse. He felt every bit like the petulant child he must look. A pout souring his expression further, pupils slit with disinterest. Well, not complete disinterest.

As overwhelming as all other scents had been, he could still pick out the familiar ones. There was the wolfman that smelled of the sea and his breeze bitten lover, the very man enduring questioning from the Daizoku Veyl his house swore fealty to. How empty a gesture that must have been. But it was before him, at any rate. The silver cuffs at his ears, lined with simple connecting chains, clinked as he turned his head to follow the movement of the Speaker as he paced. But then, his gaze shifted to the prince as his lips parted around a strangled yawn and the swipe of his tongue over too sharp teeth.

Mino knew of the delegation that had left for Zaichaer, but he hadn't bothered to ask for details on the matter. That was never his concern. But hearing the events through the line of questioning. Well; it made for an interesting story. His attention remained on the patriarch of House Veyl, curious. Casting such a harsh light of the charming prince (charming only in what Mino had experienced and that was not much in comparison to the second prince) could have repercussions in the long run. He glanced over to Lady Sage, who seemed enveloped in the proceedings as if she were at the latest play. Watching actors on a stage as they regaled the audience with fiction. This may very well turn out to be the same way.

He squirmed in his seat, leg still bouncing as he crossed his arms over his chest. Another breath through his mouth. He could only hope this would end quickly. For the sake of the prince and himself.

Korvaelis Dahshida

He couldn’t help but pity the Shinsei. What he heard most of Talon Novalys were most likely whispers and rumors amongst the nobles, however, he was often described as a virtuous Avialae that held his people and culture to even higher standards. As he stood on trial, Korvaelis would most likely believe this is true. It seemed that the Daizoku questioning him was pressing him about the matter. This is expected of the council considering it wasn’t their job to side with or against the defendant no matter their standing in Kalzasi society. Still, he found the man acting as a prosecutor to be a bit harsh as well as intimidating. Korvaelis wondered if he, the Daizoku, was doing it on purpose or if he was truly being himself.

Korvaelis was shocked as he heard the council speak of Zaichaer. It seems this entire trial will revolve around his place of birth.

The dowager looked away from the scene, letting out a long yet quiet sigh as he reminisced about his city. Kalzasi’ stance with his previous home didn’t need to be discussed for him to know that some sort of tragedy had taken place. As everything was recalled, he just nods his head in agreement as if he were there with Talon. Zaichaer is not kind to outsiders, it isn’t even kind to its citizens. Whether it was Talon or some other ambassador sent there, it should’ve been advised that person is on guard at all times. The city of Kalzasi should’ve been on guard at all times.

Korvaelis wished he could attest to Zaichaer’s cruel and unlawful, being a previous citizen and all, but he would not have much to say when it came to anything else. Not to mention, what he said would most likely sound more opinion-based. The ban on magic in Zaichaer completely slipped his mind. He often forgot about magic’s existence. Not once has he ever thought it was evil. He did not think much about it at all, not being exposed to it during his time there. The druskai could understand the council’s displeasure in that bit of Talon’s story.

Leaning forward, Korvaelis listened closely to the Daizokura before completely turning his attention back to Talon after she seemed to have saved him from the other Daizoku’s extreme questioning about the events that took place previously.

He wasn’t done yet though...

Rickter sat patiently at his spot of the pew and listened to Daizoku Veyl's address. This would be probably one of his first ever formal presidings at such affairs, and he very well understood that they'd be an integral part to his life now. He was a subordinate of the prince now, a personal guard to the heir of House Novalys as well as... er, consort. Regardless of his affiliation he had a role to play here now, thus the wolf's ears often perked in semblance to a hound curiously observing his surroundings. Daizoku Veyl was the Great House responsible for most of the trade within Kalzasi, from what Rickter knew about them, which in hindsight was very little based on what Hannah told him.

The assessment of their time in Zaichaer came up and already, the wolf felt his jaw clench as he visibly folded his arms over his chest. Aoren seemed to notice as he leaned forward with his elbows rested, his folded raven wings fidgeting in response to the questions underway. They were both fine, of course, as the wolf was confident in how they handled the first part. No... it was the disaster that led to their immediate departure, the part in which Rickter still felt rather guilty over in the end. He felt the padding of a rough callused hand rested over the back of his left, after he lowered his arms in listening to the hearing's progression. A quick glance down showed that Aoren had rested his on it, with a knowing look in his ember gaze once their eyes briefly met. The speaker wasted no time getting into the first half of it, affirming everything with Talon as they covered the arrival, as well as regulations magic that the city maintained.

"Talon had to make a lot of judgment calls, even without me there at his side half the time." It somewhat bothered Rickter but not in any typical way, for he knew Talon to be safe and had been relayed some details through the Bond. No what troubled Rickter though was how frequent these calls came around for Talon, and how often he felt put in a position to require making the decisions he did. At the mention of the massacre though Rickter's eyebrows rose, as he hadn't heard the fully story, just mere mention of such a thing once. What little news of Zaichaer that did flow into town was normally from peddlers and merchants coming in, and you can bet your ass many of them painted a colorful image of what the city of brass was like.

Then the mentioning of the day Rickter was on patrol with him... As if that hadn't turned stressful enough, he'd been relieved to have kept Talon safe. And yet, the wolf's ears perked with a tilt of his head toward Daizoku Veyl. Was he really pinning it on Talon? Aoren gave his hand a gentle squeeze, already sensing that slight aggravation within the wolf's chest cavity. Yes as much as he wanted to, Rickter was to keep quiet unless he were called upon. Which he certainly hoped he wouldn't, given that he'd be made to stand in front of all these people... Talon was tactful about correcting him as it was, however, and while still somewhat tense he could at least smile a little toward the prince. Just when it seemed the speaker, who reeked of dry parchment, wasn't going to stop digging in on Talon's behavior in Zaichaer; Daizokura Marda weighed in with her insight on the matter at hand.

"Do these rich tits really debate over events and how they portray?" Aoren's hand jolted a minor firm squeeze as he quickly cleared his throat, which led the wolf to glance over his way curiously as he received a certain look. The rest of the Houses agreed with Daizokura Ahtivin afterward, though there was a hint of judgment in the wolf's eyes as he watched Senue share his own reluctant scrutiny. "Wouldn't mind shitting on his breakfast later." Aoren's hand lifted as he seemed to look away, either to pinch the bridge of his nose or clear his throat. One of the two at least, the wolf was more concerned with the conclusion on this part of the hearing. With everyone in agreement it wouldn't be too long before they got to the worst of it.

And that caused Rickter to clench his jaw harder.
