When Mino had been given his task for the day, he’d been given very specific instructions. Mostly pertaining to just obtaining the statue. That it had to be — the statue. But he’d not be told much about pieces of parchment with numbers on it. He remained the uninterested cat, head on his paws now that his yowling was for not. The other studied the paper almost the same as he did from a distance. Whatever he thought was connected to it, he must not have seen value. Or maybe he was not someone versed in the alternative uses for things such as these. If the statue held the paper, it would explain why Lady Blue had even entertained the client with getting the statue in the first place.

He huffed, turning his head the other way as the Avialae spoke. The scent of flames reached him quick. Not hard, since they were trapped in a stone dome. His pupils dilated, gears in his head churning as he turned toward the winged man’s hand to see the paper hanging over the flames. If this was what Lady Blue truly had wanted — then he would need to get that back.

But to the wizard bird, he was a cat. Perhaps not a dumb one, and maybe bigger than the average, but a cat all the same. A cat drawn to a shiny statue. His tail flicked in time with his ears, swiveling to see if he could catch sound outside of the stone dome they were in. It was an odd feeling, isolation. Even in the cages he’d been put in before, they weren’t like this. Even if he was in the presence of another, he felt — alone. He blinked, pupils constricting. His tail flicked again and his attention returned to the bird.
Obviously, the other could contain a fire. Obviously, the other had seen some point in chasing after him. He wasn’t just some good citizen. There were none like that in Kalsazi. His face didn’t give much away, just an unwavering stare that lingered on the statue. It shone in the light of the fire. And then he looked to the bars.

They weren’t — they weren’t as small as his initial panic had him thinking. In fact, this was poorly planned on the part of the Avialae. While he might be big — bigger than the average cat — was still a cat. And he’d squeezed his way through his share of small openings over the years. He sniffed at the bars once more, butted his head against it. All he needed was a singular moment and maybe the other would let his guard down. Then, a sleight of hand. Err, paw.

☵ Hey! Put that back!
☵ 25th of Frost, Year 120, A.o.S

☵ Still nothing, this thing was being far more stubborn than he would have liked, extinguishing the flames. It seemed he couldn't get it to show its real form so he deciding to allow it to leave. Tucking the piece of paper into his pocket he stood and dropped the stone barrier around them.

Standing he turned to th cat and gave it a look, tossing the statue in its direction. "Guess there's no point in holding you any longer, I'll just take this back to the place you stole it from. It seems important, so I should get a reward for returning it, if they don't blame me for the theft that is." he said, flapping his wings and taking to the sky.

As he departed he released the large feline from the cage. Vanishing out of sight, he doubled back, hiding among the clouds as he watched the cat's next move. If his plan worked, it would cause the creature to show its true form. If Hyoga's hunch was right that is. There was something off about that cat, and by making him think that Hyo was going back to the house, it would surely follow.

If it wasn't as sentient as he thought the cat would simply take the statue and go. Either way this would give him his answer. If the cat returned to the house that Hyo saw him steal from, it would confirm his hunch, as no mere cat would have the sense to go back unless it wasnt really a cat. ☵

While it had worked, it hadn’t really worked. Mino did have the statue now, at least. He crouched low as the bars disappeared into the nothingness they had previously been. No cage; good. No paper from the statue; bad. He blinked, gaze unwavering as a breeze picked up witht he flap of the Avialae’s wings. A scent not unlike fresh water carried on it, and when he sniffed at the statue, it was much the same. There was a hint of something green in it. He snorted, shook his head before picking up the statue and taking off.
Mino had no doubts that if he brought back just the statue, there would be trouble.

Like the echo of a distant call, the memory — could it be called a memory? Maybe it was merely a daydream — was pulled from the abyss. While he might not have understood it, it didn’t change the fact that it had been triggered so easily. Just at the thought of trouble. A searing pain that wasn’t quite real ran through his viens. The Lady’s voice hovered over him, forced his ears to flick as he ducked into an alley. The darkness of it swallowed him whole as the memory took him. He hissed, hackles raised as his jaw clamped down harder on the statue. Enough that it might have bit into the corners of his mouth if he were in his zoan form. His claws dug into the ground, and as the pain eroded from his body, he was left a panting mess of fur.

The cat shut his eyes. A memory, a daydream; it had been enough. He could not disappoint. His legs were weak with the onslaught of panic, more effort required to go into standing. Above him, pants flapped on a clothesline and he toyed with the idea of taking them to shift for a moment. The plan had found it better that he not be a person; even if he was larger than the average cat. His claws dug into the ground, scraped against stone.

He sniffed. The trail of fresh water and pond greenery was nowhere to be found. He’d have to find it for the paper. For now, though, he needed to stash the statue somewhere he could return to. A soft mewl drew his attention. Another cat, much smaller than he, peered up at him. Ah, yes — Peaches. The slender tabby trotted up to him, the rumble of a purr vibrating from it as it butted its head against his leg. Their difference in size made him tower over the creature. The statue wouldn’t possibly fit in its mouth — but it would fit in the hideyhole he knew it sought shelter in.

He laid a paw over the creature, a mimicry of petting before stepping around it to the nook in the wall of the home on the left side of the alley. The brick had crumbled and been moved, likely a bipedal creature’s hiding spot first. The statue was a teasing trinket to catch the light of the lamps on the street. Peaches slunk in after it, hunched down. A knowing look was passed between the two and Mino was off once more. He’d be able to locate it again by scent.

He hopped first off the wall, toward where the clothesline hung from. The ledge wasn’t meant to hold his weight for long; it, too, threatened to crumble beneath him. He pushed off, heard the rock crack as his muscles released, propelling him onto the roof. He lifted his head to the sky, sniffed once more. No fresh water on the breeze yet, but he might find it if he kept looking.

☵ He watched as the cat moved precariously through the alley. It was interesting to see the cat take the statue and hide it, and sniffing the air. It seemed it was looking for his scent, and it was good that he was high enough to where his scent was no longer on the wind.

There was no doubt now, this cat was not normal. No normal cat could truly have this level of reasoning in a situation like this. Gently he followed behind the cat watching as it moved and sniffed the air, checking for his scent. It was curious to Hyo, as to what this creature was, if it was a shapeshifter or what. But he knew for sure that it was not a normal animal.

He would continue to monitor the feline as it searched for him, following close enough to where he could still see the feline but not so close where he could be seen. He began to think about what he could do to get the reaction he was looking for out of the cat, and then something came to mind for him.

Diving down he came to find a piece of cloth, one that could easily be mistaken for paper. Coming out into the open he proceeded to call forth flames into his hand. "This is far too much trouble, and I feel stupid for harassing a damn cat over it, so might as well burn it." he faked, setting the piece of cloth ablaze where he was certain the feline could see him.

The goal was to cause it to transform into its true self, as he was hoping it would think the piece of paper was destroyed in the flames, when in fact the actual paper he pulled from the statue was safely tucked inside his shirt. The ball was in the cat's court now, and he was eager to see what it would do. ☵

The scent of fresh water hit his nose, and Mino perked up. He’d been searching for a short while — he wasn’t exactly sure himself how much time had passed. But he caught the scent of the winged mage and that was enough for him. He followed it, coming across the other burning what looked like paper.

Paper has a certain smell when it burns. Mino had learned this, once, when he was younger. Not from his own carelessness, but from the discarding of a shade. The girl that had been Berry before Berry was even a thought had made a mistake. Lady Blue had not liked that. He couldn’t recall what it was she had done, but records of her had to be removed and the fireplace in the Lady’s office seemed like a good enough place. Mino’s age at the time had been forgotten as well, but he was small enough that the Lady still pet his head and made him watch things.

To most, paper and the average cloth smelled the same. But he knew better. Smelled better. His ears twitched as he watched the Avialae burn the cloth — perhaps hoping to fool him? Probably. He blinked, watched a moment longer, before he turned and walked off. If the other wanted to fool him, he would give him what he wanted. Even if it was a sort of illusion. His steps traced back to the alley he’d stashed the statue in, but a turn in another alley threw him off his course. Hopefully, the other would have given up on finding him in his other form.

Forcing his body from quadrupedal to bipedal was an easy feat. Easier than this job was shaping out to be. He was fortunate that the route he’d taken was still somewhat passible even in human form, even if a tight squeeze in some places. Mino licked his lips as he pulled clothes from hanging lines, shoving his legs in ill-fitting pants and arms through shirt that were almost just right. He dipped his fingers in mud, smearing the mess over his face and neck. His toes and fingers tingled with the cold and as much he wanted nothing more than to turn back and go home — he couldn’t.

Mino rarely — and he meant rarely — found himself resorting to the shift, but he was beginning to think it just wasn’t his season. His skin burned hot, face flushing as he recalled the almost-disaster of his last mission. Walking back from whence he came, he sought out the Avialae again. People sometimes said it was good to return to your roots.

Maybe he would prove them right.

He had started his first rounds of pickpocketing by doing the same thing he did now — bumping into the winged man. If he still had the paper, it would certainly be on his person. And the most harmless way of searching for it was of course playing the role of the overly friendly drunk.

"Oh, I di'n't see you there." His brows furrowed as he looked up at the Avialae, before smoothing out with a grin that made his dimples pop.

☵ Just as he thought, the cat came to him when he set fire to the cloth. He watched as it watched him, making sure not to miss a thing. If this ruse of his worked, he could expect this thing, whatever it was to attack him. He was prepared however for anything to come from this.

To his surprise, however, the cat simply turned went away, but in the direction of where he stashed the statue. After a few moments, a figure came out of the alleyway. Pretending to scratch his chest, Hyo took the paper into his hands, tempted to give it to the figure as it was surely the cat thing from earlier.

Hyo's brow raised as he watched the young man approach, stumbling into him as if to be drunk. Hyo wasn't surprised, well maybe a little at the display. Did this thing think him to be an idiot? It didn't take much for one to put two and two together. Hearing the male speak as he looked down at him Hyo's brow only raised a bit more.

"I'm kind of hard to miss, but it happens sometimes, so it's okay." he mused, tightening his grip on the paper in his hand. He wasnt all too sure what this one had planned but he would play along just for a moment of course. He was very curious as to how to play this game of course.

"Can I help you home, you seem like you have had far to much to drink tonight." he offered, a playful smirk, a ruse of course on his face. ☵

“Oh, y’ sure are hard t’ miss.”

He meant it, of course. The other was clearly hard to miss, with the wings and all. But it had seemed like something a drunken version of himself would say. He tipped his head to the side. “You jus’ walk ‘roun’ like this, huh?” Flirting while pretend drunk — more likely than one would think. If this were any other situation, he would have flirted with the other. Unfortunate, really.

“You certainly can take m’ ‘ome.” He followed it up with a giggle, high in his throat. Pressed a finger to his nose with some effort (standing on his tiptoes because of course, avialae were fucking huge). It helped that his skin was warm, tingling where the other touched him. Sometimes he couldn’t stand Frost for the singular reason of the season being cold. And then he hated it for the reason that had his mind going fuzzy. Not enough that he couldn’t think straight, but enough that it was an annoyance. “‘m not done drinkin’, though. An’ I hafta find m’ shoes.” This last bit was said with a pout, lips pushed out.

He perked up with the faked appearance of an epiphany, brows lifting and hand tapping on the other’s chest. Which, he stopped for a moment. Distracted, partly, by the amount of muscle there. His brows furrowed as he glanced down at the winged mage’s pectoral muscles. “Why don’ you join me for a drink, yea’?” He pressed closer, eyes widening. “I can — I can pay for your drinks.” There was some effort needed (or, he did a well enough job pretending to need it) to get the words out, uneven blinking included.

Mino’s grin was lopsided as he swiped his tongue over his lips. Traveling hands slipped down his chest to rest at his waist. “Please?”

☵ He chuckled at the man's response to bumping into him, as it was somewhat amusing. It was interesting to see this male stumble on him, getting his hands full of Hyoga's body. He wasn't adverse to the hands, but he knew what he was doing, looking for the paper. It was interesting to see the length this one would go to in order to regain this little paper.

He seemed to be flirting with Hyo, trying to throw him off, not to say Hyo didn't mind it. He offered Hyo a round of drinks with him but the Avialae declined. "As much as I would love that, I think we have something else to take care of." Instead he ascended to sit on a high wall, uncrumpling the paper in his hand.

Looking at it his eyes danced over the writing on the paper once again, not understanding the numbers and symbols on it. "I honestly don't see why this paper is so important to you. I don't get it." He looked to the drunk as his eyes bored into him. Hyo was etching this face into his head.

"I may not be a genius, but I'm smart enough to know when something doesn't add up. First, this cat steals a statue, that surprisingly has this paper inside of it. When I burned the cloth to fool the cat, it went away, and then you show up, bumping into me and feeling me up."

He descended back to the ground and placed the paper in the man's hands. "I wont say that this was a dull night, you gave me quite the task of chasing you and then trying to see you in your true self, whatever that may be. I'll remember your face that's for sure, but try not to steal, there's no honor in it." fed up Hyo left, taking to the air and returning back to the inn he was resting at. ☵

The other was warm, and in his current Zoan form, Mino was getting cold. Colder by the second. The more base part of his mind craved that heat. He persisted in his pouting, even as the other backed away and went off to the rooftop. “Well, now you’re too far away.” He felt like he might have been drunk off of something other than alcohol.

He shuddered, rubbed at his arms as the other spoke. It was cold. Had he put something together, and understood what Mino had meant to do? The Avialae seemed to think he was after the paper, but at least not the importance of it. That much was still safe.

“They say I was born lucky.” He shrugged, stumbled a little in place. He flicked hair from his eyes before turning his attention back to the other. “I don’ know what this paper is, but maybe it’ll be worth som’thin’ if I sell it.” His shoulders lifted in a shrug as he stared up at the other, pupils blown. The winged mage would be too far away to hear him purr. That high up, it wouldn’t carry to him. A good thing; negotiations of any kind would deteriorate if the other was absolutely certain.

A brow rose as the other came back down. The paper was placed in his hands, and he hadn’t even asked for it. A shame; he would have liked touching the other a little while longer. He licked his lips as he looked back to the other, blinking blearily and nodding along. “Sure, sure. No honor. Got it.”

There was certainly no honor among thieves, but Mino had never really thought himself someone to worry about honor. And he wouldn’t. Honor wouldn’t keep him from the dangers of the house. He snorted as the other flew away, watching him until he was completely out of sight before slipping the paper into the pocket of his stolen pants. Now, the statue and then the house.

Finally.
