The Slave of Duty, huh? Yeah, I've heard the reviews of that, but I don't think the Pfenning's played it since I hired on. Supposed to be really good, right?" Imogen chewed on that thought for a moment, made somewhat introspective and also kind of slow-thinking by wine. And beer. And Gin. And whatever the absolute fuck that green stuff in the tiny goblet had been, had the bartender said that was made from herbs? Imogen scratched lightly at the skin around one of her opalescent patches of scaling on the neck.

"Probably not a life-changing experience," she said, incorrectly, "but yeah, I'd love to go.”

Imogen examined her cup thoughtfully, albeit, at a lower thought capacity than this usually implies. She wondered, vaguely, and not for the first time, if she had been assigned to go with Carina simply because of her convenient placement at the Theater, or if this was somehow another push by her mother to try to get her to leave Zaichaer. Send her away to take in the sights, get enamored by the place, maybe fall in with some strapping young Orkhan? It would be just like her; she'd grown more and more convinced in the past few years that Zaichaer was only going to grow less safe, and Euvettia Ward had always been inclined to do what she thought was best for other people.

Eh, probably not. Too many moving pieces for the job to be nothing but a distraction.

“Oh, save me Ys- ugh, Aurin, please do not turn her on to any new drugs. Carina, at this rate you're going to end up accidentally brewing some kind of elixir in your own arteries and explode."

His face fell. He would have liked to help, but he understood secrecy better than most. Perhaps eventually he would know what the ladies were hiding, but the stakes weren't so terribly high—at least that he was aware of.

"I don't have pirates myself," he said with a humorous lilt, "but there are pirates on Lake Udori and in the skies, though Kalzasern airships and Avialae do patrol so the pirates tend to be careful around here." He shrugged. At one point, he had almost managed to interest an old friend in putting his piracy under the auspices of his keiretsu via a front so they could both profit, but alas, it hadn't come to fruition.

"And, well... the bartender can offer you a menu; there are a great many things available, though most are herbal, some enhanced alchemically. But I don't want to get on Ms. Ward's bad side, so I won't suggest any." He smirked, but seemed content to sip on his drink. There had been a period where his mental state had required such things in bulk as a coping mechanism, but he had learned to dance more carefully with those particular partners. He still occasionally felt the old self-destructive drive, but he had ways to keep it at bay now that he hadn't had before he came to Kalzasi.

"There's also a menu of flesh," he added, "if either of you is in the mood for pretty company tonight." Aurin hadn't been the sort of manager to sample the goods, though, over the years, he had sometimes slept with some of the courtesans, and even some of the whores. He could make some recommendations there based on experience or survey data. Clients were generally keen to talk and Aurin had always had a way to get them to open up. They trusted him with their kinks and shames for whatever reason, perhaps because they had seen him as the safe avenue to have them fulfilled and forgiven.

People were strange.

"And here I thought you had everything. You've got your hand in the Velvet Cabaret and the Golden Peacock and yet no pirates?" Carina admonished. "Disappointing." She sat back in her seat, her leg bouncing out of anxiety and the excess energy that came with a need to fidget. She wanted to do something, but she didn't know what, and she didn't think her current companions were as antsy as she was. An unfortunate side effect of drug use, but what was she going to do — go to the Cabaret and not partake in something? Alcohol was a line she wouldn't cross.

She shook her head and closed her eyes for a second, anxiety threatening her demeanor It wasn't illegal to visit the Velvet Cabaret in Kalzasi, but shadows in the corner of her eyes were almost enough to make her jumpy. She was sure the chapter of Reconciliators here were not immune to visiting whores and doing drugs, anyway. There was nothing to worry about.

"Herbal and alchemically enhanced, eh?" She beamed and waved over the bartender, and did not bother asking for a menu. Instead, she mumbled a request for something that would help her relax from the high she already knew was going to be rather short. He nodded and left, and she drew her attention back to the pair.

"I'm sure the whores are lovely, Aurin, but I prefer to fuck people I already know. Though I guess the details of the relationship don't matter that much to me." She ended the sentence with a mutter, and then without so much as a breath between them, "So when are we seeing The Slave of Duty? Sounds like fun. When's it showing, anyway?"

Soon the bartender returned with a joint of herbs whose mixture Carina never bothered to ask about, and with a match taken from the bar, she lit it and started smoking. She settled into her seat once more. "Sorry, Immy, I just needed to relax. I'm too high strung right now." The cocaine didn't help, obviously, so Carina's explanation was almost comical.

“Well, I might give it a go. Um, although it may have to wait a day. Feeling pretty sleepy for some reason."

(The reason was alcohol)

"I think your problem, Carina, is that you don't get enough ballet practice in on your trips All those powders and smokes give you energy, and no way to burn it.” Imogen had been teasing Carina all night, but she wasn't about to bring up her friend's paranoia in front of Aurin. There were boundaries, even when everyone was drunk and high in the middle of a whorehouse. “I keep saying you should start sparring. Swinging around a big practice sword and getting a few bruises in the morning- that'll take more energy out of you than a dozen backmarket alchemists could stuff back in."

Imogen's advice was well-intended, if not precisely well-adapted to Carina's drugs, but you couldn't expect someone who refused anything harder than cloves to understand the highs and lows of cocaine. The Sunsinger had never clearly explained her objections to Carina, except that she found getting high to be "too introspective" and getting drunk was okay because "you just sleep that shit off". Carina knew that her mother was an alchemist of some sort, but the only lecture about the craft which Imogen seemed to remember was how to color beeswax for candles.

The Orkhan girl finished her glass and regarded it solemnly. She was vaguely aware that she was tottering on the line between 'drunk enough to be kind of annoying' and 'drunk enough not to remember much in the morning', and she was definitely going to have to forego any prostitutes tonight if she had any more. On the other hand, the bartender was currently pouring something light red and *steaming* for another customer on the other side of the bar, and it looked incredible, and you could have sex anytime.

“How about you, Mr. Kavafis? What do you do for fun around here?"

"I don't have pirates yet, Carina," he said, pointing at her with the hand holding his tumbler of alcoholic goodness. Apparently, enough time and alcohol had passed that he was using first names. He looked from Carina to Imogen and back, wondering if that meant Carina was intending to fuck Imogen later that night. The idea made him grin for a moment. "And, well, the show's in repertory at the moment, so there are plenty of days it's showing before you return to boring old Zaichaer. When do you want to go?"

After she had taken a pull of her smokable, he held out a hand. "May I?"

He wasn't going to get as smashed as them, but he would catch up a little to ride the communal highs.

"You know, you can come back and use the practice studios, Carina. Or we can all use a practice studio and spar..." He liked that idea, curious to see how the dancer and the Orkhan fought and hone his own skills. Just because he had a legitimate day job and his con artistry was sneaking through customs with a valid keiretsu didn't mean he could let himself get soft. There would always be danger in the world.

When he saw the longing look Imogen cast at the mulled wine, he caught the bartender's attention, pointed to the brew, and indicated he needed two. If it was alchemically enhanced mulled wine, well, it was tasty.

"For fun here...? Hm, even though I don't work here anymore, I tend to get my kicks people-watching. Kalzasi isn't a straight-laced sort of place compared to many other places I've seen, but it's still interesting to see what people will get up to when they think anything's allowed."

"Oh, yeah, I forgot you already said that." Carina admitted, and then she passed what she was smoking to Aurin. How quickly professionalism passed. "Maybe before we have to leave. So there's some fun memory to take back when we return to Zaichaer, yknow? So we can be disappointed by the shows at home." Carina waved her hand as she said that, and then downed the rest of her water.

"I'm not a great fighter. I'm better at running away." She giggled. "But that's fine. Imogen's a fighter. Maybe I should practice fighting more, though, I think I'd be better off that way. Knowing how to better handle a sword or a dagger." Beyond what little bits Imogen had showed her here and there, she didn't know her way around anything. With her dance training, maybe she'd even be good at it — her muscles were strong and she knew her way around the rote movements required to learn how to fight properly. It was a realization then that she should actually practice more.

"People watching is fun. I like to do it from afar, though. I suppose you like to talk to the people you watch? You seem very gregarious, Aurin." Carina looked pointedly at Imogen. "I do plenty of ballet practice, by the way. I make great use of the practice rooms in the Golden Peacock. It's not like I ever take any time off." Carina worked all the time, whether it was ballet or talking to people or running errands for people who needed them. Sometimes all of it at once. The current experience in the Velvet Cabaret had even turned into work, because now she was high and still needed to feel out Aurin, test his safety. She had a hunch, but to confirm that hunch would require to reveal more than she was still comfortable with.

"Kalzasi has largely public magic use and cultural polyamory, I'm not even sure what isn't allowed."

Imogen grinned at Aurin as he talked about sparring. He was only a few inches shorter than her; she figured they were probably somewhere in the ballpark of the same weight range, but a human was a human. No practice sword on the face of Karnor was going to get through Orkhan scales. That was, to her mind, the real reason every public ring in Zaichaer had separate hours for "demihumans." Unless they had the spirit of a goddamn champion of legend, no human was winning a bout without either magic or a gun.

"You already hate the shows at home, especially the ones you're dancing in. Do you remember that show last Glade, where that pissy little brunette- oh, oh, look at this."

Imogen's attempt to tell an embarrassing story was foiled instantly by the arrival of the mulled wine, which was much more important in the moment than needling her friend any further. The beverage was deep red, almost like a dark cranberry, and the steam rising from it smelled like fruit and spices and maybe just a bit like blood, which wasn't the turn-off Imogen might have predicted it would be. Battle wasn't really that bloody for her, in all honesty- again, a lot thanks to her natural armor, but also because when you killed something with a sword made of sunfire, there wasn't that much mess afterwards.

"Fine, fine." Imogen conceded, "We get fucked now. Later, if you want to hurt yourself hitting me, you're welcome to give it a shot. I've never fought anyone from Kalzasi, except maybe in a bar fight, and that cannot count." Again, the broken glasses and stools were more of a spectacle than an exciting threat. It was a wonder humans didn't all take up Reaving, naked as they were.

"I mean, I like to think I can have a conversation with just about anyone," he admitted. "I just try to find where our interests overlap and then lean into them. Sprinkle in some humor and the occasional flirtation and it seems to work out most of the time." People tended to assume he was much more sexually active than he was; that was to be expected when he was managing a place like this, though he didn't make a habit of shitting where he ate. Light, casual flirtation tended to make people feel good, though, so he wasn't opposed to it. The pleasure principle was helpful in building rapport.

"There was an Avialae whore who worked here a while back," he said in reference to what was or wasn't allowed in Kalzasi. "Wanted to be a courtesan, but Gods love him, he just wasn't smart enough for it. But plenty of people wanted to pay for him to be dolled up like a Great Lord or even the Shinsei and join them in a boudoir." He chuckled. People were funny, always wanting what they couldn't have or what they thought wasn't allowed. "Even the Kalzasern people find ways to make things taboo, and then break them."

He smirked at Imogen's reaction to the mulled wine.

"Indeed, intoxication tonight, sparring and pirate plays another time." He grinned and raised his glass. "Now tell us the rest of what sounded like it was going to be an embarrassing story..."

If he wasn't going to find out all their mysteries tonight, he would settle for a story. He took a sip of the wine and its spicy, heady bouquet crept into his senses. The night was going to get a bit blurry soon.
