Brenner smiled at the mention of clockwork innovations.

“I am the son of the top purveyor of aeronautical technology to the Zaichaeri State. While I may not be actively involved in the day to day processes, which fall under the purview of my father and brother, I am on the board.” His smile waxed wry. “And I am usually the first to test out the prototypes.” The question seemed to distract him enough from the lewdness on stage that he regained some semblance of ease about him.

“My foray into diplomacy is only a recent development. I started down this track in Glade, when your… Shinsei, am I pronouncing that correctly? When he brought an envoy to Zaichaer. That is, I expect, how I secured an invitation to his wedding. I showed him around my city during his stay.” He tilted his head to one side,

“Prior to that I was First Officer aboard the ZADC Searing Victory… a dreadnought designed by my brother, actually. I still hold the rank of Air Commander, and I expect I’ll return to active service when I’m back in the Fatherland.” Brenner pursed his lips, considering Torin’s career.

“Mm.” His smile flattened out and his expression became less readable. “I admire a man who wends his own way through the world. The brightest minds I know in Zaichaer hail from the merchant class. They have something that is often missing amongst the upper crust- Gumption. A hunger to advance, a… restlessness. The noble seeks to sustain, where the merchant seeks to advance. I cast my lot in with the ambitious before the complacent. Any day of the week.” He lifted his drink in an affirming toast and gulped some down.

Several things were becoming increasingly obvious to Torin.

First, that this man was not enjoying the entertainment on offer at the Velvet Cabaret. Second, that the topics of conversation that Torin was capable of carrying with any sense of understanding were going to be of little, if any, interest to him. Third, that he was only peripherally aware, when he was aware at all, of the things Brenner was talking about. The Shinsei had made a diplomatic trip to Zaichaer? What was a ZADC? Military stuff, obviously. It sounded like it might be a navy, with ships.

He continued to nod along, trying not to think of how very pleased he'd been to be the owner of the tiniest shop and a house that was falling apart. How happy he still was, fully content with the small, coziness of his world and lack of any desire to advance beyond.

Lifting his glass in a belated return salute he tried to calculate the likelihood of making a fool of himself dependant on how long he stayed and, abruptly stood.

"It was lovely to meet you, Mr. Dornkirk, I am, as you say, a working man and I should be getting back to my shop. Wouldn't do to leave it untended in the middle of a work day. Uhm,"
Here he scattered a handful of small coins, mostly copper but still far more than enough to pay for two drinks, onto the table top.

"Congratulations on your celebration and I hope you find what you were looking for."

Making his way to the coat-and-hat area he found his garments himself and slipped away before the attendant had time to wonder why he was making such a hasty retreat.
