“The agreement was that our allies would assist us in supervising his captivity until such time as we could engineer him into becoming an instrument of our choosing.” Astrid remained stiff. Despite the calmness with which she spoke the words, it was clear that she was not at all pleased.
“But this does not surprise me. It is merely…aggravating.” She narrowed her eyes. “I expect our southern friends to be making some fascinating moves in the near future.”
Shaking her head, the Grand Marshal turned to Brenner. She eyed him studiously.
“Keep a close watch on Albrecht. His loyalties are not something I trust implicitly. But he may yet prove useful in stoking the flames of sympathy for our causes.” Stepping up to her desk, Astrid resumed her seat. She picked up her pen then met Brenner’s eyes.
“You are dismissed, First Minister.” She began reviewing more of the paperwork upon her desk. As Brenner would make his way out of the chambers, she called out to him. “And Brenner…”
Astrid looked up from her work.
“Well done.”
