Venetia took the drop of blood, watching as it crystallized into the essence of Lyrielle’s memory. She accepted it into her hand and clutched it to her chest even as she panted heavily. She stared down at it almost as if she could not believe it was within her grasp. Her thumb brushed over the glassy surface with such a tender expression on her face that it was hard to believe this was the same woman who had committed such acts of atrocity for the past year. She reached up to touch the hand that brushed over her cheek. She turned her face so that she could kiss Lyra’s palm. A single tear squeezed out of the corner of her eye. A brush of her thoughts would reveal relief, joy, exhaustion, overwhelming disbelief, and many other emotions that were too much and too big for her to truly form concrete thoughts on in that moment.
“Nor shall I, sister. Nor shall I.” She released Lyra’s hand and watched her go. Then Venetia Childs stood up. One of her own assistants rushed forward to help her to her feet. She continued to clutch at the blood crystal, keeping it tight to her chest.
“What now, my lady?” She touched the forearm of her comrade as they hobbled away from the runic circle.
“Now?” Venetia looked down at the gem in her hand. “Now the real work begins. But first, home awaits us. We have much to report.”
With that, the Blood Witch of Zaichaer departed, not even sparing a glance at all that had been unleashed.
