Yes. If only.” Many were the thoughts that had rifled through his head regarding how things might have been different. It was no use lingering on the past however. He could not change what happened. He could only face what was happening to him now. Talon listened as the elf explained his rather aimless approach to the road ahead of him.

That is quite the predicament. If you have nothing, if you believe yourself to be nothing, then one would surmise that you also believe you have nothing to lose.” He gave a smirk. “That would certainly explain your boldness.

Peering closer, Talon observed the shape of the elf’s aura. He watched the way it fluttered and twisted as it followed his swell of emotions. He looked at the manifestation of the man’s soul, pulling away the surface in order to stare deeper into the core of who this man was. He could see a budding knot there, a spark of something that was wound up in the knotted pathways of his aetheric structure. Talon had spent enough time at the runeforge to know a bundle that was ready to explode when he saw one. Whether that meant this man had greater potential or was simply a walking disaster waiting to happen, he could not yet tell.

The Emperor wants my power. Even before I ascended, there were those who desired to have my power at their disposal. Magic is an art whose limits I have frequently pushed. It earned me much respect and fear. Now, His Imperial Majesty holds the keys to my leash. He got what he wanted.” He spoke with no lack of bitterness in his voice. Though it had cost the empire greatly to enslave him, he had made sure of that, they had gotten what they wanted in the end. No matter how gilded the cage that he occupied, he was still their prisoner. Eloquence and finery be damned, it would be a life he would continue to hate and seek ways of leaving. He had no doubt that the emperor was aware of this fact. It was the truth of this that had ultimately led him to sending those he cared about away, even if such an act had been reckless on his part.

The more leverage they had over him, the more trapped he was. While there was a part of him that felt hollow and cold, it was for the best that such things be sent away. He could not risk them. Not when so much was at stake. He had weakened himself so that others might have a chance at freeing him and, if it came down to it, defeating him should he be turned against them.

As for the exploits for which my power will be used? I am certain that many will hear of them in due time. I am, as you, a humble servant of the empire now. I am bidden to do as the Imperial Mandate commands.

The assumption that the elf lacked anything to lose was correct. Of course, he didn't actively seek death, but if it found him, what did it matter? The only stipulation regarding that would be he simply didn't want to die alone. Not in the traditional sense, mind, but in the sense that if he were to perish, he wanted to take innumerable souls along for the ride.

Now, would this mean his death would impact nobody? No. Of course, there was at least one who would be shattered should he fall, but…he'd move on, surely. Eventually. Either way, Hector simply wasn't that important.

"Ah, yes. I had roles to play and a business to inherit back home, but here? There is…nothing to tie myself to. To live is to feel; that's all I have. I seek…intensity. For the most vibrant of moments, I will pay any price." Though he spoke at a low volume, a strong undercurrent of emotion ran beneath each word; anger, bitterness, longing, desire. He meant this.

"...maybe as I drift, I'll find meaning; a drive, a goal, something. But for now, you're right! …and I do find that my boldness adds intrigue, if nothing else." The elf was oddly chipper given how reckless such an outlook was– ending his sentiment with a smile and a certain smugness to his expression.

He didn't know what he was doing, but into the abyss he would walk with a smile.

Regarding the fact that the divine was also a more than proficient mage, Hector was somewhat surprised, responding to the sentiment with a raised brow. He looked more like a warrior than the type of person he knew to spend the majority of their time around magic. Interesting. A few thoughts shifted through the mind of the vampyre, eyes narrowing for just a moment.

"Power does have an undeniable allure, I will say that. I do think caging a bird to use theirs is a bit…lacking in dignity, one might say. There's fun to be had in control, but for me personally? I'd much prefer my power be internal." The elf shrugged then continued, "...a bit pathetic of me to say that and only have two runes, but alas, I'm too new here to try and poach any off of others." Hector lamented with a sense of faux drama; though he genuinely regarded himself as a far weaker mage than he desired to be, he wanted to maintain a sense of levity through hyperbole and the smallest touch of theatrics in his tone and hand gestures.

However, his thoughts on the subject didn't quite reflect reality. His expertise in Summoning was growing rapidly in tandem with his beloved aidolon on top of the fact that by now, he walked along the cusp of mastery over his vampirism. That's before one even considers the wellspring of aether held within; truly, it was such a shame he had no clue how to tap into even the smallest fraction of it.

But will he make this discovery before or after death? That's the real question.

Relative to the last thing the Avialae had said, "Hear about?" The elf almost sounded offended, exaggerating his expression. "Oh, no–...when I said follow your exploits, I didn't mean keep tabs on the news. I meant that in a far more literal sense," the elf laughed, mischief in his voice.

"Plus since you're such a potent mage, I couldn't simply leave that to hearsay. After all, it isn't as if running across the divine is exactly common for us of humble, mortal blood, no?" Hector placed specific emphasis on the last sentiment with a tilt to his head and the widening of his eyes, though his exact reason for doing so wasn't quite clear.
