At the talk of Æros love life, it felt rude to pay too much attention to the bout, and so he shifted his body and the majority of his focus to his neighbour on the podium. His answer, tentative and guarded as it was, rivaled the gladiators indeed in garnering his interest.

"I... understand." Arvælyn was hesitant to be overly transparent about his past, though he certainly understood Æros' aversions. Vulnerability was not something that had come easy to him, after years of looking after number one. He'd explored it first with Aurin, the results of which had been a mixed bag, and later with Finn. The latter experience had been night and day from the former. But still he was guarded, in his way. There were distinctions between them. Their priorities weren't aligned in some ways that felt insurmountable... Undefinable, at least in the languages the two of them spoke- And both were fluent in Common.

Still, he smiled to hear that perhaps Æros was at least beginning to embark upon something akin to what he'd found.

"No need to leap into any of that. But don't be quick to dismiss it, either..." Arvælyn lifted his glass, as if in toast, though there was nothing of that intention in the gesture. At least not consciously.

"I think we fit rather well together as we are, I and Finn... Though there have been certainly times when I'd have killed for your talent." As an actor he'd been typed out of roles for one reason or another. He'd thought that he was half-Elven for most of his life, and yet he always so favoured the Hytori stereotype that it hadn't been practical to cast him in one of the many human or, of course, Avialæ roles that had been available at the Golden Peacock when he'd worked there.

"Ha! What a thing to be able to forget something like one's natural appearance. That, my friend, is talent remarkable."

If Æros were to be honest with himself, he very much possessed the desire to continue what he had with Khy, any caveats or risks aside. Yet that being the case, he was unsure if desire alone would actually be enough. Still, he worried about what potential for self-sabotage he knew himself capable of and genuinely thought it probable that his lover would grow disillusioned with him as time went on. Oh, and then there's the pesky matter of the fact that he's somebody else's property.

"Yeah, I, ah…am not trying to rush. I don't think he is, at least not intentionally, either– he's just…eager and rather enthusiastic. Which is contagious, but to be frank, our own emotions aren't the only issue." Æros spoke slowly, as if he didn't quite know how to phrase his point, which would be notably odd given his normally smooth manner of speaking.

He's sort of dancing around the subject because it'd normally be a risk to admit something of this sort to other nobility, but how much would Arvælyn truly condemn this? For the man was not raised here– would he still find the nature of their affair to be taboo? And since the Fæ lacked an innate sense of self preservation on top of not really having anyone he can trust regardless, suppose it doesn't matter, does it? Perhaps still unwise, but Æros couldn't bring himself to care.

"...and that second problem is not really up to either of us, in truth. For you see, he is servus to another– meaning, I'd have to convince his current master to sell or give him to me without indicating our relationship lest problems arise." Oddly, he spoke this admission in a rather matter-of-fact manner despite his nerves.

And then regarding Fæ glamour, "...it's a fun trick isn't it? Changing one's shape– there's limitations to it, of course, but I can go as far as changing my sex, proportions, colors, and so on. Every Fæ-ethalan can and many mixbloods inherit the trait. Makes us ever more exotic and otherworldly, no? And I can definitely see how it would be of use to an actor, for sure," he chuckled at the thought– it would be mighty convenient to just adapt to various roles in that way. However, most Fæ do possess many, unalterable traits such as wings or horns that they can never snuff out which…would very likely be limiting in and of itself.

Arry smiled inwardly at the description of Æros' mystery lover. The elf remembered himself as being the more eager and enthusiastic of his own pairing. Perhaps Finn would recall it otherwise, but he'd been the one to make the move after a prolonged prelude of crushing on the minstrel. He arched an eyebrow at the cryptic conclusion to the half-Fae's thought. He wondered at the unspoken additional issue that complicated their concourse, but it felt indelicate to inquire after something he'd made a deliberate point to keep vague.

But he didn't have to wait long for his curiosity to be sated, as Æros reconsidered his reticence.

"Ohhh..." He shifted to face his neighbour outright now, finding this exchange that much more interesting than the chaotic melee at this point. "I can certainly see in this the problem lies." He offered, hoping the concern in his facial expressions might account for the lapses in his Vastian comprehensibility.

"If not rude this is to ask... How did you end meeting such a one and developing toward, um... Love blossom?" He couldn't think of the word for 'intimacy', so he tried to wax poetic in such a way as to get the notion across. He wrinkled his nose apologetically, knowing that 'love' was a weighty word and probably not ideal in the current context, but it was the best he could do for the nonce.

"Indeed! I ended up taking on a Rune of Masquerade to offer some semblance of what you can do innately." He hadn't ended up developing the talent enough to employ it much beyond the concealment of blemishes when he was still an actor, but he'd intended to use it a great deal more to enhance his work. It saddened him to think he might never tread the boards again, and yet... His life was shaping up to be as great an adventure as those of characters he portrayed. There was marked solace in that.

"I suppose it could be useful to a dancer as well... To what end do you find yourself using the talent?"

It would appear that Æros was, at least, perceptive enough to have read the other man correctly regarding how he'd react to the information he'd just elucidated upon. While it was common for him to crutch along with Mesmer in situations where he could, he'd always put in the effort to connect the dots between emotions and behaviors such that he became reasonably good at doing so even without the magic. He wasn't enough of a fool to think that he'd always be able to get away with using it, regardless of how skilled he became.

It was a relief to know that he was right, though, not only because it reinforced his ability to perceive others but because if he wasn't, then the other would likely use the information he'd just indulged against him.

To Arvælyn’s question, he, at first, chuckled at the phrasing, though it trailed off into somewhat of a sigh as he thought about how he ought to explain what happened. "I'm a dancer at several different places in Umbrium, and I'd just finished a shift when I saw him at the bar, if I remember right. He stuck out because he was dressed oddly compared to the rest of the clientele, in truth, but also…I just thought he was cute and don't much like sleeping alone, so I approached him."

"From what he told me, he was able to sweet talk the doorman into letting him in one way or another. Further, his current Dominus apparently gives him a fairly long leash, so to speak, as he was out that night without collar. So at first, I had no idea, but he did tell me before I took him home with me. Polite, that– but I didn't much care. From that, I've let him learn my schedule and he usually ends up finding me since it would be…rather uncouth to show up at his master's demesne to ask after a slave." Glossing over the fact that the boy had picked that location because he was formerly Patrician himself, this recounting of events was accurate, if a bit vague.

Æros nodded at the notion that Masquerade could imitate Glamour. He had the rune, too, though he hadn't really spent much time with it as of yet– but for a performer, it could be used in functionally similar ways.

And to his query, "ah…Glamour serves me in many ways, to be frank. As a dancer? I can adapt colors to fit the general mood of the piece or the costume I'm to wear, and for some particular styles of dance I do look better with a more lithe figure. I also shift some of my adornments, like the horns, bigger or smaller based on the aesthetic I'm going for. For some specific performances, I've actually switched my form to that of a woman's, but such a thing is rare."

"I don't really mind doing so, in theory, but it takes a lot of energy to do a shift like that and then shift back when I want to. A bit of a nuisance when a lot of my partners only have a taste for men, to be honest, but ah well. I shape-shift based on lover's preferences all the time, anyways, so it's in the same vein," he shrugged at the last sentiment, speaking as if going back and forth would be regarded as more of a casual affair should it be easier.

Granted, he did identify as and prefer to exist in the body of a man, he just found it fun to live life fluidly at times. Doing so gave him a lot of different perspectives and experiences he otherwise would very much not have and this was something he cherished being able to do.

Arvælyn smiled, enjoying the simple story that yielded such a complicated situation. He supposed his meeting with Finn was similar, in nature. It had been Finn who'd been performing and, while his voice was truly lovely, Arry had to wonder now whether he'd have approached a singer who wasn't so strapping. It felt like ancient history, now- Another life in another realm.

"We have servi in my household, but... I have not considered to, um... regard the rules of such things. Finn does not, I think, like that there is here slavery." But Finn had never been as poor as Arry and to him Solunarian slavery didn't seem any worse than Antiran or Kalzasern poverty. At least slaves were promised housing, food and clothing, which wasn't always something afforded to the poor. He also just tended to take servants for granted when he was privileged enough to be served.

"It sounds like a play." Arry decided, with a nod. "I hope it is does not a tragedy prove." He offered, with a wan, consoling smile. As their talk turned to Æros' use of glamour, the Elf shifted back to a diagonal posture as he sipped his wine. The combatants numbers had dwindled significantly since the beginning of the melee, and most were fighting more defensively and strategically at this point. The Traverser was the fiend of the ring, slipping from one side of the sands to the other to deal subtle blows in a blink, but he was drawing more and more focus from the others. A common enemy against whom to coordinate...

"That is passing kind of you- To shift your form to suit the whims partners bear, when most of them doubtless cannot do anything nearly the same to suit yours. I can't imagine being so... accommodating for anyone I didn't care deeply for," He tilted his head reconsidering, "Or someone who had something I wanted."

The treatment of slaves differed heavily from household to household, of this Æros knew rather well. In some cases, like his own, it differed even drastically from person to person. Different family members regarded the servi in myriad ways, some having favorites, some even having least favorites. The Fæ himself was largely neutral. He possessed no natural compulsion to be cruel without some kind of provocation.

“Mm, yeah, but I’ve never met his master. I have no clue how much he’d care, it’s just that if he would happen to get upset, I’d prefer to avoid those consequences. Granted, I recall he did say that the man was actually a friend of his at one point in time? They’re the same age, I believe. It’s possible he’d be sympathetic, but he’s naught much more than a stranger to me.” As reckless as he sometimes was, Æros wasn’t bold enough to try and overtly claim another man’s servant.

A half smile drew itself on the Fæ’s lips as he breathed out a bit of a laugh, “I suppose it does sound a bit like a play, huh? I do hope he and I sail upon navigable waters, too, though…I’ve never really let myself be vulnerable with another, and in truth? It’d be markedly hard to do so again if this burns in any spectacular fashion,” he sighed at the thought.

The half-elf’s expression was almost empty at this point as he stared out onto the arena, watching the Traverser blink to and fro. As well as the man did, Æros had never been that good at predicting the outcomes of these chaotic melees. A single mistake can end it all– everything gone in an instant. With it being a free for all, cheap shots were all the easier.

But when Arvælyn implied his use of Glamour was out of some type of kindness, he just laughed. “You think so? That’s…not really why I do it. Some of the more drastic changes have quite a different feel, so to speak, and I am one with a wide breadth of tastes. It’s actually just easier to do what others want because on my end, my preferences are so very flexible. Of course, I have some lines and things I enjoy more than others, but since most of my relationships don’t last, I don’t really mind.”

“...and if one was to last, I don’t think I’d mind playing the same role for the whole of the time we spent together, either. Honestly, the role or shape I bear is far less important to me than the person I’m with? I don’t know if that makes sense…but if I enjoy the chemistry I have with somebody enough, I’m happy to play whatever part they ask of me.”

Arvælyn pursed his lips and nodded. It sounded like a difficult and complicated situation, and he didn't wish to make the other man uncomfortable by lingering on the subject overlong. Between his newness to the culture and difficulties to the language, he didn't really think he had much worthwhile to contribute. He wasn't keen to offer unsolicited advice and he didn't have enough frame of reference to provide anything practically useful anyway.

"Well, I suppose you have time to... figure this out?" He offered a consoling smile, "To you both wish I well." With a nod, his focus shifted to the sands before them just in time to catch the dramatic end of the intrepid Traverser, who blinked right into a whirlwind of blades that were orbiting a kineticist. Arry wasn't the most knowledgeable about Traversion, even though it was Finn's latest Rune, and with the speed of the incident it was hard to tell whether he'd teleported into space already occupied by blades or whether the blades just immediately shredded into him once he'd occupied the space, but whatever the case- The Kineticist was showered in the blood of his would-be attacker and even some of his opponents cheered the end of their most vexing rival.

"Splendid technique." Arry mused, placing his cup down to clap for the clever use of Kinetics. "I shall have to explore that one." To punctuate his point he extended his hand and let the cup rise back into his grasp when he was done applauding. He took a sip between smirking lips.

"Many of our kindnesses are, after a fashion, selfish..." He mused, running his tongue over his top lip and letting the cup rest in his hands upon his lap. "Still think I these be kindnesses." He crossed his ankles under the bench and bit his lip.

"I have few friends here. If you not object, would I suggest we remain, um... connected, after this?" His golden eyes danced over, a bit of vulnerability evident in the suggestion.

Arvælyn likely had little experience in scenarios like the one he had described, so it made sense for him to veer towards a more aphoristic response. “I suppose we do. It’s just a bit of a tightrope walk, given that we can’t really afford much for word to get around about it,” a bit ironic to say this after just opening his mouth about this little secret himself. However, everyone needs somebody to confide in, no?

As he spoke, he watched the Traverser get shred to red ribbons of gore, splattering the Kineticist and the sands around him in the process. His end was swift, gone in the blink of an eye, as he’d thought mere moments ago. Beautiful and tragic, it was always a spectacle when a body was made into a fountain. Who even knew who the most competent fighter in this match was? Maybe they’d died a while ago, even.

He found himself staring as the vivisected pieces of the man fell to the ground, pulled back into the conversation once more when Arvælyn spoke again. “Mm? Oh, yeah– there’s an art to wielding a fan of blades so swiftly, isn’t there? Lovely work,” though he spoke with admiration, his tone sounded pitying, assuming the mage wouldn’t last long even if they were the last man standing in this match.

Æros’ eyes drifted back to focusing on his companion as he took a deeper drink from his glass, “maybe it is a kindness. It’s just…more fun to indulge peoples’ fantasies being as neutral as I am,” he laughed a bit, “...the delight people display when you enthusiastically embrace whatever they like is infectious, I think, and I don’t have to sacrifice any of my own pleasure to accomplish this.”

The Færie smiled at the thought. Maybe it was a kindness, but it was ultimately an ego thing– the more he pleased another, the more powerful he felt over them, regardless of the actual role he played during the act. Well, that, and…the expressions, movements and sounds people made in the throes of passion were delicious to him.

And to Arvælyn’s request of friendship, his expression warmed to something more friendly. “Oh? I certainly wouldn’t mind. Your company is pleasant enough to warrant keeping around, I think.” The sentiment was sweet, really. Æros rarely saw himself as much more than a pretty face.
