Despite the afternoon reaching its peak, the weather was still frigid, thought not yet to its coldest. Overcast skies reigned more often than not, and despite the sweeping crew coming through snow still piled in the corners of parts of the streets and on rooftops. The cold, however, did not deter the contestants of the brawling competition from lining up outside the proving grounds. Several local taverns and ale houses supplied the spoils of victory, and beer and meat flowed freely inside the walls as men fought and won bouts were given tokens to exchange for food and drink.

It was inevitable, given the situation, that over time as the crowds grew more and more inebriated that fights began to break out not just in the ring, but in places around the proving grounds a swell. Most of these were quickly quelled by the presence of the Sky Guard, though one in particular was still going on.

A man with a thick mustache was drunkenly swinging a fist at an older gentleman who casually sidestepped each swing. With every miss the drunkard seemed to become more and more infuriated, and at one point he attempted to dive and tackle the greybeard. Instead of crushing the thin, and seemingly frail, old man he instead found himself face first in a pile of horse dung from a passing carriage. Standing with a Roar the drunk half ran, half staggered at the old man one last time, again missing and slamming into a group of other, slightly less drunk, individuals. From there the fighting spread, growing as one person threw a fist into the next, and like dominos the chaos spread.

The Skyguard was quick to react, starting at the edges of the fight and disabling the conflict one person at a time. At the center of it all though was the older man. Short, slightly stooped with a walking stick, he casually stroked his beard as he dodged one man after another, whacking a few on the rump and head as they passed. The circle was closing in, and despite his skill he would eventually be overwhelmed and crushed under the milling bodies.

☵ Old and frail
☵ 32nd of Frost, Year 120 A.o.S

☵ With all the celebrating going on, Hyoga had been trying to wrap his mind around it all. It seemed these city folk like to party, even more so, they liked to fight. Hyoga found himself in one of those fighting grounds eagerly awaiting his turn. He had willingly signed up to be a participant in a match or two within the Proving Grounds fighting tournament. He was ready to show this city what he could do in a fight, even if he never really had experience in unarmed combat.

It would be just another skill he would add to his warrior arsenal. He had been watching on the sidelines for a while now, getting a feel for the fighters of the city, and to try and see fighting styles were common here. With such a variety of combatants here, Hyo was certain he would find someone worthy of a challenge for him.

So far he hadn't seen anything that resembled a worthy combatant so he ventured into the streets around the venue of the tournament. Though he did see someone that caught his eye. Of all the fighters present this one seemed as if he was no mere amateur.

No, this man had the look of someone who had been fighting for their lives since birth. The man appeared to be older, almost elderly in appearance, at least by the slight withered look of his face. Hyo could safely assume he was no young man, otherwise, if that was the case he took very poor care of himself.

In any case, Hyo took note of him as he fought, and found his way of fighting relatable. It was direct and to the point, with its a few lucky shots to boot. Overall the Kathar was impressed with what he saw. Not only did the old man's skill in brawling impress him, but the good sportsmanship he displayed caught his interest too.

Though it seemed that the fact his opponent couldn't land a solid hit on the man, his blows struck someone else, which caused the all-out brawl to ensue. At the center of it was that old man, and despite being able to handle one's self, Hyo didn't think it was right for him to be by himself in such a debacle.

So Hyo did what he thought was best, flying into the center where the old man was, and defending the geezer from harm. "Dont worry about a thing old man, I'll keep you safe." he noted, which the old man simply chuckled and assured the Kathar he was far from worried.

The number of brawlers that remained within the fighting mob was more than enough to get the Kathar excited, but enough to where Hyo felt confident in his ability to take them out. With a smile on his face, he got into what he would call a fighting stance anticipating the flow of battle.

"Don't be shy boys, I'll gladly take you all on." he goaded, causing an inebriated patron to throw a punch at his gut. Catching the man's fist tossed him aside like a rag doll, making sure to keep the old man from harm. It seemed that the frail guy was fine with letting Hyo do the fighting for him, sitting on the ground within the ensuing brawl.

Another man had picked up a chair and was going to use it to bash Hyo in the back with it. Using his wing, he blocked the projectile, which was a cover as another male came from behind and put the viper in a body hold. Needless to say, Hyo didn't care for that all too much and decided to put the man down with a swift elbow to the man's skull.

His arm whipped around to grab the man, but the breath was knocked out of his lungs as another patron was landing blow after blow into his gut with punches. It was a good thing Hyo had the build of a mountain compared to this man, being able to endure better than a normal man would under such circumstances.

He tried to go back to his original plan, using his wings to batter the drunks off of him, but he could feel hands on them. It seemed that they weren't too drunk to know the best way to overwhelm an Avialae was to take him by the wings. "You are all starting to piss me the fuck off!" he hissed, flexing his wings with as much force he could muster into them.

Effectively the group had been sent back some, freeing Hyo from being pinned down by the drunks Clearly agitated, Hyo began knocking them down one by one, catching their attacks and countering with a heavy-handed one of his own. Granted he made sure none of his strikes could do too much damage to them, but it was enough to knock them out at least. "Are you getting tired there sonny? I can take over if you'd like." the old man prodded, but Hyo only gave him a look to stay out.

Laughing the old man simply watched as Hyo continued to fight off anyone coming at him. The Kathar looked up as he could see the sky guard closing in as they too were dissembling the drunken rabble and he knew once they got to him he'd have to stand down. That was fine, as he was already over this farce of a pitched fight anyhow.

The sounds of drunken men and fisting impacting on faces, the thunderous roar of the brawl began to simmer down into groans of pain and exhaustion as the drunken brawlers all seemed to disperse finally. It was at this moment, Hyo realized he had an audience amidst those who watched as the mob of fighters was dispersed.

Once free he turned to the old man as he came to pat Hyo on his leg, as the Kathar was several times taller than the elderly male. "I knew from the moment I saw you that you could handle your own young man. It looks like I'm not the only one who has an eye for talent." he said, pointing at a group of armored men, they seemed to be surrounding someone. The man exuded an air of power that intrigued Hyo. "Who is that?"

The question caused the old man to look at Hyo with disbelief. "Why that's the Shokaze young man, that is the ruler of Kalzasi" the elder explained, chuckling a bit as he bowed to the noble before thanking Hyo for his aid and departing. For a moment Hyo simply stood there and looked the ruler of the city over, studying the man a bit before trying to take his leave seeing as he had had his fill of fighter for one evening.

Hold a moment! a voice called out to him, Hyo turning to see who it was. An armored Avialae approached, after speaking with the Shokaze it seemed. From the looks of him, he had to be a captain of some sort as his armor was slightly different than the others. The crowd was now being escorted away from the area and Hyo was questioned as to his role in all of this was. He told them everything, from the old man who allegedly started it all to him having to swoop in and keep the old guy safe.

Hyo explained to him how he simply wanted to keep the old man from getting hurt and to ensure no one else got in over their heads. The captain seemed to have this look of being impressed, if only a little by Hyoga, extending a hand for him to shake. The cold feeling of the metal against the warmth of his adrenaline-soaked skin was both harsh and refreshing, and the Kathar relaxed. "I see you are quite the capable fighter? If I heard from the other guards correctly, you jumped to the old man's defense all by yourself? Color me impressed by that's not an easy task to take on" he said, causing a perplexed look to form on Hyo's face.

"You seemed to have caught the attention of someone important, so consider this an invitation to the Skyguard. Of course, this is optional, but it would be a waste to not have a talent like yourself in our ranks." he explained, folding his arms under his chest. The man looked to Hyo with a smile and then handed him a piece of paper. "If you want to find a place where you belong, come to the Mistreach Keep. I'm sure we can find a place for you." he said bowing to the Kathar and then making his exit. Hyo looked at the paper, directions to their HQ written on them

Looking up he watched as the Shokaze seemed to give him a look, then continued onward with his procession around the city. Hyo could only watch as the most powerful man in the city disappeared into the sea of citizen who came out to see and celebrate him. ☵

"Yes... Yes I think that will do quite nicely."

The old man sat back on the old barrel he had found, idly watching the skyguard as they finished rounding up the last of the drunkards. His eyes lingered on Hyoga for a moment and he grinned a gapped tooth grin.

"Thelius, there you are." A deep voice made the old man, Thelius, turn. A tall ork with Ebony skin looked down at him with a frown, "What are you doing here? I thought I ordered you to look for him." There was a strong emphasis on 'him' as his brow creased further.

"Oh, just doddering about. I grow so forgetful in my old age you know. I hope my lord can forgive me."

The Ork grunted, "You've been saying that for nearly 400 years now." He looked toward the Shokaze as he was being escorted away, "You aren't meddling again are you?"

The old man didn't reply but simply grinned again as he looked after the group. Eventually, the work sighed and rubbed his head, "Just don't start another rebellion. I still hear about that one whenever I visit Lorien, and I would rather not have the inquisition on my back again."

"As if the inquisition had any means of harming you, my lord." Thelius said with a snort, hopping off his crate and rubbing his back as if in pain, "But don't you worry, I will be on my best behavior. Besides, I think I found him."

Blinking, the Ork made to reply, but Thelius shook his head, "No it isn't him, but he WILL be in contact with him. I've seen it." He tapped the corner of one eye and chuckled.
