Unfortunately for Pahoran, as a member of the Sky Guard, he was assigned to guard and monitoring duties for the festivities. Most of the day to this point had been uneventful. Fights around the Proving Grounds, accusations of fraudulent activities in some of the stalls, a bad case of spoiled meat pies served in the Plaza of Jeweled Arches, etc. As it was a festival Pahoran was allowed to wander the streets and participate in most of the festivities, though his patron Knight gave him strict instructions to not drink while on duty.

While wandering the Plaza a report comes in about an attempted break in at a small jewelry shop called the Polished Emerald. Pahoran is assigned the responsibility to investigate. The owner, Felma Green and her apprentice Lavin seem disturbed, though unharmed. Felma is a short and plump woman, quick to smile with a keen intellect. Lavin, on the other hand, seems somewhat slow though earnest. They report that it happened while they were out enjoying the festivities. Someone threw a rock into the display window of the shop, the sound alerting the proprietor of the Roasted Hen next door, who then called for the sky guard.

As of yet no one has entered the shop to investigate, and the state of the scene is unknown.

Breaking and Entering Pahoran didn’t have the day off even before the sudden return of the Shokaze’s return so he wasn’t at all upset when he was still on guard duty that day. Actually the festivities made his job more pleasant. The white winged Avialae had been given leave to wander the festivities and even participate as he deemed appropriate, though his mentor had given him very strict instructions that no alcohol was to be consumed. Which very much showed how little the fellow guard knew about his charge. Pahoran enjoyed a good drink with family and friends, but he nursed on glass through the whole night and only drank on free time. So instead of alcohol he did have a few glasses of milk which was still his preference.

The young knight was actually in the act of watching mock sword fight. The participants were men chosen out of the crowd and handed fake wooden swords. Pah actually wouldn’t want to use those things as they were more like branches and easily bended, but the smack sound of them springing back promised a nasty welt to anyone who found their touch. Pah was standing at the edge of the crowd, and noticed that two girls kept glancing his way. His ice blue eyes watched the mock combat while keeping an eye on them. They were both cute, but he would have guess fifteen or sixteen, and a bit to young for him. So he focused away from them to avoid any encouragement.

It was then that Pah felt someone getting his attention. He turned his gaze towards a boy who he had seen around. He made a few coins by acting as a messenger boy, and got the excuse of running about town. Pah’s smiled at the eager boy and said in a soft voice, as whispering couldn’t be heard. “How can I help you, young man.” Pah asked. The boy beamed at him, and Pah felt a twinge of sadness that something as simple as being nice and complimenting the young man would make him smile so much.

“There has been a break in at the Polished Emerald.” The boy said.

“Can you show me the way?” Pahoran asked as he slipped a couple small coins into the boy’s hand.

“Yes Sir.” He said and took off. Pahoran moved after the boy, and luckily with his longer stride he was able to keep up with the boy. The winged solider couldn’t almost sense the pouting from the two girls as he departed. He felt an internal smile at having gotten out of that before it has actually become awkward with the two girls. Pahoran was more interested in woman about his own age and hopefully with more maturity.

It did only take about ten minutes to arrive at the shop. Between the obvious sign hanging over the door, the crowd and the big hole in the window Pahoran had guessed his arrival before the boy indicated that they were finally there.

Pahoran walked up and looked at the two women standing there. “Greetings. I understand that we have had a bit of trouble here.” He said indicating to the window.

The older of the two woman began to speak while the younger stood with a stunned expression on her face. “Thank you for coming good sir.” She said.

“Please call me Pahoran.” The ice blue eyed guard said.

“Pahoran, I am Felma Green.” She said with a easy smile, but Pah could sense a forced calm. She was clearly panicked but unlike her assistant, at least that was Pah guess since the older woman was short and plumpy while the others was not. “I own and make the jewelry here at the Polished Emerald.” She then indicated to the other woman. “this is my apprentice Lavin.” She steped forward to shake Pah’s hand but it seemed almost routine as the rest of her seemed to say she was still in shock. “We were out in the festivities when we got word from my neighbor at the Roasted Hen let me know that there was the sound of breaking glass, and the guards, well you were called.”

Pah was nodding his head and glanced between them. “While I go in and take a look at what is going on, why don’t you get Lavin something to calm her nerves while I look about and then come back and we will see what is missing.” The woman smiled at him and then did as he suggested. The guard turned and looked towards the window. He walked up and began his inspection at this stage first.

Breaking and Entering Pah stood looking over the broken window taking in what was going on at that point. What ever had been used to break the window had been used at a lower level. Pah’s ice blue eyes took in the sharp broken glass that was hanging dangerously for the open area. He made a note to get the rest of the glass out of the frame before he left, others wise someone could get seriously hurt.

Lowering his gaze down Pah looked down at a display table that had been picked clean of what ever had been on it at one point. There was only a box left on the shelf but the items in that box had been taken. It appeared that is might just be a simple grab and run but Pah wanted to make sure before he made his report.

He then stepped into the now unlocked shop and began to look around. He made sure not to touch anything as his gaze swept left and right. He could see the shattered glass spreading outwards from the window. He at this point began to look for what object might have been used to break the window. He didn’t see anything right away, but after a time and a little exploring he found a ball under one of the counters near the back. Pah reached out and was surprised to find how cold the ball was.

When he pulled it out though he saw that is was actually a ball of solid ice. Though there appeared to be something distorted in the center of the ball. Pah could feel that the ice ball was already beginning to melt but slowly. He focused on the room around him and while not as cold as outside, with the broken window it wasn’t much warmer either.

The squire wasn’t exactly sure what to do with the ice ball, though he wanted to see what was in the center, as he wondered if it was somehow related. So slipping it into a bag he began to looked around to see if anything else had been stolen. After a moment he paused and looked at the front window. And decided no one had actually come in that way. Based on the glass at the top it couldn’t have been someone tall, and based on the presence of glass at the bottom anyone who had tried would have most likely gotten them self cut up.

Since he had reviewed the seen Pah felt it was time to start talking with the owner and her assistant.

Breaking and Entering Before Pahoran left he made sure the door was locked and then hammered some boards over the broken window so that there wasn’t any easy way to get into the shop. He suspected that much of the good stuff was locked up but still.

Pahoran walked into the Inn next door to see the two woman who ran the jewelry store. He looked around and saw Felma, the short plumb little owner was busily sipping at her tea. The young guard watched in amusement as he had ever seen anyone busily sipping at tea. We wondered how many pots of the stuff she had already downed, and secretly wondered how bad she would be if it was alcoholic. He looked at the then at the younger assistant Lavin, and she very slowly drank at her cup of tea, and given the lack of any steam rising the knight wondered how long she had been sipping at that tea.

He came in and walked up owner and pulled out the ball of ice and held it up for the proprietor to see. “Can I borrow a pan. I need to melt this to get to what ever is in the middle.” He got a funny look from the woman who ran the place but she nodded and Pah turned to look around the room. There were a verity of people in the room. Most of them were focused on either their companions or one their drink or food. A few’s gazes wandered the room but they appeared more bored then anything else. His eyes did notice one young man who seemed to be digging into his meal intently but he was sure that every time he looked in the young man’s direction he kept jerking his focus back to his plate.

The asked for pan was delivered and handed over and the handsome Avialae gave one of his friendly smile and then walked over to the table where the two woman were still calming their nerves by drinking tea. Pah actually sat by there fire and putting the pan over the flames dropped the ice ball in and began to speak to the woman who were within speaking distance of the fire.

“It appears that the only thing stolen where the items in the window, and that no one actually entered the shop.” Pah reported but looked at the woman, “but I don’t know the inventory so you will need to let me know. As far as I can tell no one came through the window and the front door was locked.”

Felma nodded towards the pan. “Was that the item they sent through the window?”

“I would hazer a guess that it is since it was the only alien object in there.” He paused and looked at the older woman with a humorous expression. “Unless you keep balls of ice hanging around the place.”

“No sir.” She said but looked at his curiously. “Why are you cooking it.”

Pah check on it at that comment. It was making great progress melting but he still couldn’t get into the middle. “There is something in the middle of it.”

Just then the Lavin said. “Should I go do as the office suggested and take inventory?”

“Yes deary.” Felma said. “Also take any items up to are rooms and the safe there since it at least doesn’t have a hug opening in the windows. The girl nodded her head and Pah kept an eye on the ice ball and on the girl as she left. He reported more of what he had seen to Felma as they waited for the ice ball to melt.

Breaking and Entering Pah kept and eye out on the ice but he also looked around again. The young assistant had been gone for a few minutes and no one made any move. Then after a bit of time the young man stood up and was trying to hard not to look at the young guard. Pah watched for a moment and then looked at the ice ball. He couldn’t say why but something just said follow that young man. He looked at the owner who was watching the pan with an amused expression. “Can you please watch this. There is something that I want to check on.” He set the pan down by the fire but safely away from it in case she just left the pan there.

Pahoran actually headed out the back to avoid being seen following behind that young man. “I need to use your back exit.” He said as he passed the owner. They gave him a funny look but let the guard through. Soon he was around the backside of the building. He would have preferred to come from air, but there just wasn’t really enough room. Pah felt he could have done it but it wouldn’t have been easy and he might make to much noise. Instead he moved down the back ally. Luckily this was a well kept part of the city so the back ally wasn’t as nasty as some of the other allies he had been in.

As he came closer he slowed down and focused on controlling his breathing. The door was opened, but that wasn’t a surprise since Lavin had gone in, though the fact it was hanging opened made Pah’s heart drop. He was sure the young lady might not lock the door behind her but she would have closed it. Breathing slowly so he could hear Pah listened. A male voice was speaking. “Finally found you alone.”

Pahoran could tell the young woman responded but couldn’t really hear what she was saying. The man’s voice wasn’t difficult to understand. “It will be okay. It’s time. We can slip away now. She and that bird brained guard are melting my ice ball.”

More mumbling.

“I did it for us. She wouldn’t ever leave you alone.” His voice grew wedeling. “Let us take what’s in the safe, and with it we can start our new life together.” Pah sighed. That was what he was afraid he would hear. Pah took a step into the shop and paused his expression sour as he looked at the young man who was currently grasping Lavin arm. The young woman looked conflicted. Pah suspected she did like this young man, but she was an honest soul and so didn’t want to rob the woman she loved.

The two turned startled and looked at Pahoran as he stood there watching. The young man gasped and stared at him. “What.” Was all he could say.

“And you think I am a Bird Brain.” The squire said and moved slowly into the room taking his time, and watching the fear coming over the disgusting young man’s face. “I think you and I need to have a long talk.” Slowly Pah extended his hand and his blade shimmered into existence. The Squire knew that it was a bit melodramatic, but given his audience with his notes frozen in ice, Pahoran was fairly sure that was what it was now, and his frankly half baked plan. The melodramatics would hopefully cowl him. It worked.

A short time later, the young man was sitting tied waiting for Pah to take him in while the sky guard said to Felma. “I honestly have no clue if he really loved Lavin, but he thought he had won her heart and could use her to help him robe the place so they could steal the valuable stuff from the safe.” He looked at the young woman who was sitting dejected. “I think he underestimated her love for you, and overestimated how she felt about him. Your assistant is loyal to you, though might need some education in avoiding scoundrels like him.” He said spitting the words at the thief. Pah actually hadn’t gotten the name of the boy.

“Well love makes fools of use all once and a while.” The jeweler said. “Thank you for the help.” Pah nodded and then left to go loom over the stupid young man.

“Well let’s take you in.”
