The Velvet Cabaret
16 Frost 120

The lights inside the main hall were uncharacteristically dim. The crowd was uncharacteristically quiet. The gambling tables were in a lull. Several patrons had wandered in from the hookah lounge to watch the floorshow. It wouldn't be a cabaret if there weren't performances, after all. Nextdoor at the Golden Peacock, the shows were larger, grander, and often more serious. But here, the cabaret was more burlesque. Music, dance, humor, skills—but often with a lot of skin showing. There were seeder establishments where one could wink back at orifices that could be made to wink. Here, there was the veneer, at least, of art. They put the tease in striptease.

"I don't want to do this," said a voice from the stage as the music began.

"Aurin, shut up."

"I'm not a performer," Aurin continued.

"Aurin, shut up." Another voice.

"I hate it."

"Aurin." This time it was several voices, saying various things like, "you love it," "you'll get a treat later," and, predictably, "shut up."

The music continued to patter. The lights came up. The familiar—to any regular patron of the Cabaret—figure of Aurin Kavafis stood on the stage. He never stood on the stage. His smile was comically awkward. With a walking stick in hand, he walked forward to the edge of the stage, twirling it as he went.

"Welcome, strangers."

People laughed. Some shouted his name. Someone definitely demanded he take off his clothes. He winked in the general direction of that voice.

"I appreciate a woman who knows what she wants," he said. "I'm sorry, but it appears that I'm your emcee for... this number and then I will quit the stage for much more talented people." Then, when he spoke, it was clearly in time with the music and if he wasn't an accomplished singer or dancer, the courtesans had obviously pulled him on for comic effect and because most of the patrons enjoyed him.

"Happy to see you. Please, rest, stay... at the Velvet Cabaret." He rolled his eyes in self-deprecation, then laughed when a man's voice called for him to drop trou. Several people present had tried to proposition him like one of the more willing courtesans and he usually responded with something along the lines of them not being able to afford him, but they could get a discount version in Rickter if they wanted to slum it. He did a little bit of fancy footwork, bowed, continued. The dancers were coming out one by one, finding a spot, and striking a comically bored pose. Rather than stand completely still, though, they would pulse in time with the music, clean, crisp isolations of different muscles. They were the talent here, and Aurin actually enjoyed a little stage time with them. Though he claimed to take nothing seriously, he respected the hell out of the courtesans—their art, their wit, and their bravery.

Perhaps that was why so many of them loved him in one way or another. He protected them. He made their jobs easier. And if he was a bit of a curmudgeon, they all figured it was just an act. It was also nice that he never tried to take advantage of his managerial authority to demand sexual favors. There had been bad apples in management before, though Madame Lunaria did not put up with that sort of predatory shit. Perhaps that was why Aurin had lasted so long where he was.

"Ladies and gentlemen, friends beyond the binary, good evening! Do you feel good? I am your host. Welcome," he repeated, "to the Velvet Cabaret." It was, in effect, a stylized version of what many here present had experienced when he was working. He checked in, made sure people were happy, people were comfortable, and while he wasn't a courtesan, he was a bit of a charmer, and told jokes, asked questions, and listened. He truly listened, which was rarer than one might think.

He warmed up to the stage, to the audience, dropping his pretense of hating it, of being uncomfortable. He turned in time to catch the muscled leg of one of the dancers. He looked down at the man's crotch, flush with his leg, then out at the audience with wide eyes as if he could be shocked. They knew him better than that. He have an awkward shove and the dancer spun one hundred eighty degrees into a pose like his colleagues, pulsing with the music. It was an understated thing they were doing, but they were certainly showing off the goods. Almost anything could be turned into a show here, hence the variety show moniker it frequently received. One never knew what one would see at the Velvet Cabaret. Unlike the Golden Peacock, they didn't hand out playbills.

"Leave your troubles outside," he demanded of his audience. "So life is disappointing, your husband's... is disappointing. Forget it! In here, life is beautiful. The girls are beautiful. The boys are beautiful. Even the orchestra is beautiful." Several of them turned to face the audience, revealing the instruments they were playing. The music picked up and Aurin moved to the back of the stage during the dance break, though he had a few comical interactions with various performers, then back to the front when they found their new poses.

"And now to present them. Each and every one... a virgin." He slapped one of their asses with his walking stick. There was immediate laughter. Some of the performers looked amused, others offended, some others something else. It was all a masquerade for the people's enjoyment. "Don't believe me? Go ahead, ask them yourselves."

Several of them added come-hither gestures into their pulsing choreography. The music was slowly building, not in volume or speed, but tension. Those with a musical ear would hear it, the same as before the explosion of dance. More was in store.

"Outside it is winter, but, in here, it's so... hot." A woman cracked her fan open and wafted fresh air toward his crotch while leering at the audience. He hiked his thumb at the dancers. "Every night we have to battle to keep them from taking off all their clothing." He half-turned away before returning to the audience with a conspiratorial, "so don't go away. Who knows? Tonight, we may lose the battle!"

Then, with overexaggerated steps, he snuck off the stage while the real professionals burst into song and dance. The show was impressive—beautiful, titillating, and comedic. From the bar where he took refuge, he watched and enjoyed their hard work, how they charmed the audience in entirely different ways than he did. Then he let his gaze travel over the audience since they were his charges as well. It was his job to keep the good times rolling and that involved both positive reinforcement and the occasional deflection. People under the influence of substances, gambling, and their hormones could be both laughably predictable and dangerously unpredictable. And so he must remain vigilant.

Near the door, his eyes fell upon a young woman with an astounded expression. Ah, he thought, another one. He made his way surreptitiously to her vicinity such that when the larger show gave way to something more intimate—a slender contortionist doing a striptease and quite amazing things with a long cigarette-holder—he eased into her peripheral vision as the lights came up a bit more to encourage drinking and fraternizing while the variety show continued.

"Oh, a fellow red-head," he said. "You are new here. Hello. I'm Aurin. How can I be of service?"
I for sure just riffed on "Willkommen" from Cabaret. I can't promise I won't do something similar with "Hey, Big Spender" from Sweet Charity or "Life Upon the Wicked Stage" from Show Boat. You're welcome.

If you were to have told Fawn last Ash that come mid Frost she’d be walking into a major city with little more than the clothes on her back, leaving her family behind, and headed straight for the unknown she’d have laughed in your face and called you a drunken goat. But here she was, after a five days ride from her hometown she stood tall and excited under the archway of the western entrance to Kalzasi as the afternoon sun warmed her from the harsh Frost winds of the countryside.

Her heart thrummed. Her feet ached. Her hair a sordid mess and yet with all her disheveledness about her, she was positively glowing.

’Out of the way, girl!’

Mere seconds from colliding with a carriage driven by a grumpy pepper-haired man, Fawn yelped and hopped quickly off the pathway she’d been inadvertently blocking.

”Sorry!” She called, waving excitedly in apology to the driver with a grin that contrasted her weariness. Large wheels crunched the last remains of Ash’n leaves upon the gravel sending tiny crumbs of the seasons fluttering into the air above. Soft wind from the countryside blew crisp air into the city and beckoned the new arrival forward, as if pushing her towards her fate.

Crystalline eyes danced with the leaves into the city and with a deep breath, her feet followed.

’Pat, pat, pat, pat’

Her small feet carried her deep into the city. Map in hand, Fawn weaved her way through the colorful streets that teased her nose with scents of spiced meats, herbal teas, and the Frost air that her body barely registered as cold. Ahead of her, plethoras of vendors and shops lined the walkways while their owners shouted for the cold and weary to come in from the harsh winter cold.

But Fawn wasn’t here to spend money, as enticing as city goods were, she was here to make it. And step one was finding a venue in need of a voice. She recalled bittersweet memories of lying with Marina in the fields, spinning tales of the riches and entertainment in Kalzasi, from the Guilded Expanse, to the Plaza of Jeweled Arches that she currently found herself in.

”A city of opportunity. If you can’t find opportunity there, then it’s not destined for you. Or you’re just not talented!” Marina’s laughter echoed through the gingers' memories as she trudged onwards ready to find that very opportunity she could feel awaited her in the city of fortune.

Hours later she emerged from inside yet another pub. And much like the sun had sunk to dusk, her heart felt heavy. Opportunity had always come easy for the girl, but venue after venue had turned her down as if she were a copycat of the girl before her. Never letting them even hear her voice, or tell her story, before shooing her out the doors in favor of selling another brew to a drunken few.

”Oi- ginger.” A tall feline woman with a pinched face emerged from the shadows of same pub she’d just come from, as if she’d been standing there the whole time. Fawn blinked, briefly stunned, but straightened her back promptly and nodded. ”Me?”

Holding a pipe and taking a few short puffs, she leaned against the edge of the building and let her eyes trace up and down Fawn’s figure.

”Four buildings down, right hand side. The Velvet Cabaret. If you’re new to town it may be in your luck to show yourself that way.” She purred softly into the pipe and pulled her thick cloak tightly around her frame. ”You’re likely to find them more…. Interested in arts than other places.”

”Ah- thank you, Ma’am!” Fawn bowed. Her hair fell and bounced around her shoulders as she bowed briefly and then took off towards the Cabaret with a new excitement. Whatever a cabaret was, it sounded much fancier than anything she’d encountered. And if they valued music as much as she did then it may be just the place.

Moments later she stood in front of the grand castle of a building. Huge, exquisite, and nearly reflecting her own exhilaration back at her. She ran up the steps of the building. Each step feeling lighter than the last until she was standing at the precipice of her last hope of the evening, and yanked the door open with a gusto she hadn’t felt since the day she’d first learned to ride a horse in the open fields.

Fawn hadn’t known what to expect upon entering the Velvet Cabaret. But it certainly wasn’t this. Scantily clad mortals of every gender and race danced and sung on stage like butterflies fluttering from flower to flower. But there was something more alluring at play and it swayed her heart as strong as an oceans current. She stood in the doorway in stunned silence while the lights of the cabaret played like faeries in her eyes and made a painting of her skin.

The display in front of her, from the dancing to the outright lewd patrons, kept her attention so fiercely that she hadn’t noticed the red-headed man approach her until he opened his lips to speak.
Fawn startled at him. At first, still reeling from the shock of what she was witnessing, but quickly blinking her manners back.

”Oh! Yes, how did you know? I’m Fawn!”

The girl brushed out her somewhat tousled hair with a few fingers in an attempt to blend in with the much more upscale crowd, and smiled widely at the man as she bowed shortly in greeting. As she rose her eyes darted around the establishment.

”I’m a minstrel, I was told you may have an opening?”

But, was this the place she wanted to be? Beings dressed in less than a swimsuit, making flirtations of each other in public, surely this was frowned upon? Was it not too outlandish? Maybe... But it was exciting. It was new. Like the first day she'd met the whirlwind that was Marina. The first time they'd danced, kissed, the first time she'd seen magic. Her fingers gripped the edges of her backpack tightly as they steadied her enchanted nerves and took in all that the main floor had to offer with wonder.

"Ah, well," he began, "as you may have noticed, our courtesans are musically trained and talented, but we do keep a list of dependable musicians for when someone's sick, overbooked, or big shows are planned. That might supplement your income, but might not be enough to live on. Most of the musicians on that list work several venues part-time. The good thing about us being next door to the Golden Peacock, though, is that they have sniped some of our artists..."

He spread his hands as if to assure her he wasn't hiding anything.

"I don't mean to deflect or discourage, but even in a city the size of Kalzasi, there are only so many cushy full-time positions for artists. Of course, if you audition for Madame Lunaria and you do well enough, she has been known to hire musicians on a more full-time basis without requiring them to be courtesans. But many of the people here wear multiple hats as well. I will say, if you want to win her over... well, be good, but also... win over her cat, the White Dread, Pascal. I mean, if you have any kind of animal magnetism, in Pascal's presence would be the time to bring it to the fore. It's how I got fired and I've been here now... Gods, five years?

"In any case, have a drink. Take a look around. Especially in dark corners. You'll see naked and near naked people here, many up to no good. Narcotic things get smoked and inhaled. Many people come by with notions of what it's like here and then are surprised by all the things permissible here. Wouldn't want you going into this with your eyes closed." His grin was a touch wicked, but he was being forthcoming, both for her sake and because nobody there wanted to vet and audition someone only to have them decide it's not a venue in which they are comfortable working.

"If nothing scares you away, I can introduce you to Madame Lunaria."

Fawn was listening to the rattling of information quite intently, but her eyes continued to scan the room to take in all that surrounded her. To her right she saw what the man meant; a pair of nearly naked bodies entwined so closely you wondered where one began and another ended. Perhaps they felt that they were endless- whether that be from hormones or drugs was its own question, though. Further in the depths of the shadows two courtesans, appearing through the shadows and linking arms briefly waved her direction in a 'come hither' sort of way. Her lip upturned in humor and she bit back a clumsy laugh. Even Marina as flirtatious as she'd been was never that bold- it felt so foreign and fake to her. Sure the intentions were to entice, such was obvious enough, but there was something a tad too carnal in their displays of flirtation. In a way it reminded her of the farm; animals simply philandering about and making odd displays of arousal towards each other in hopes of copulation.

If she focused on that thought alone, the room made much more sense.

She turned her attention back to the man in front of her with a confident raise of her brow. "I have no qualms with working among the bold." She said. "But, I don't think I have the uhm... experience necessary to do much more than sing." Her pale cheeks flushed underneath the dapple of freckles as she stifled a giggle at a wandering flirtatious eye from across the room. "That the case, still, I will never turn down an opportunity. So, where can I find this Madame Lunaria?" Truth be told she was a little nervous about working around such nefarious folk. But the glamour of such an impressive establishment, the excitement of a new life, and a tug in her chest screamed do it.

"Not to worry," he assured her, offering his arm and twirling the prop walking stick in his other. "Should you be hired even just for a one-night, command performance, I or any other manager on duty would be certain to have an eye out for your safety and, ahem, virtue. Even the courtesans are protected by legally binding contracts. They are not subjected to any sort of sexual servitude, and some of them abstain from any sex work at all. Even some of the most lascivious dancers—it might surprise you. Nothing happens here without mutual consent or else I have failed in my duties, and I don't fail."

He winked. Leading her along the wall and past a bustling bar, the contortionist was held aloft on the hand of a man as built as any Avialae warrior, hand-to-belly. Wearing only glittering garments that would be scanty by lingerie standards and a man's hat, her back and entire body were arched such that she could take the occasional drag from her cigarette where the cigarette holder was held between her toes. A very O of a woman.

And then they were through a side door, in a close corridor largely unused at this hour. Nothing exciting was happening here, though when they passed an intersecting hallway, she caught glimpses of performers changing costume, wigs, makeup, and the like.

"Play pretty for the people," he called, and she could hear the snarky responses called after them. She was, after all, a potential co-worker, not a client. Then he stopped, knocking on a heavy door.

"Are you decent, your Majesty?" he called through the wood. "My cousin is here to audition, if you'll recall." He made conspiratorial eye contact with her and pointed to his red hair, shrugging, as if to say she might as well use any angle she could to get ahead in this crazy world, and that he would back up the little white lie. What's your name? he mouthed. When she answered, he called, "Fawn," through the door.

"Don't forget," he whispered to her, "you charm the cat, you charm the elf."

She smirked at his remarks and let her eyes be drawn around the room, letting out a giggle as light as the flap of a hummingbirds wings and clear as crystal. Some say you can tell the talent of a singer by the clarity of their laugh. To many it may have just been an ordinary laugh, but to those with a trained ear would consider her laugh a melody in itself.

"I should hate to see the outcome of such a night."

Sliding her hand through his and resting it upon the top of his wrist, Fawn allowed the gentleman to lead her through the menagerie of talent. She stuck out like a sore thumb, and yet her striking features seemed to fit right in with the beauty of those that surrounded her. Or, they would if she were wearing something other than well-worn travel boots and a thick wool cloak below her unruly hair. Even the most modest dancers were draped in luxurious silks and velvets, exquisite jewelry dangling from their ears and necks, some of which glowed or sparked with inklings of magic that drew the farm-girls eyes to them like moth to a flame.

As they passed by the bar she felt as though her feet had begun to glide across the floor, or perhaps lift entirely off. Like a dream she let all of the majesty of the venue fill her senses. The thick, terrible smell of smoke from the contortionist mingled with the scent of sharp perfumes and colognes donned by dancer and patron alike. The explosions of color, the hazy lamp and stage lighting setting the mood of the night- not one detail of the establishment was not in perfect tune with itself. But just as soon as she began to fully take in all that was in front of her, it was replaced by a much quieter hallway. The walls still as detailed and artfully constructed as the rest of the building but the organized chaos of the main room was left behind her.

She let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding as they passed by a changing room. Nearly stumbling over her own two feet she lagged behind the man slightly as she craned her neck to see just what costumes they were slipping in to. All to quickly she was pulled forward, still arm in arm with the gentleman, and set just in front of a heavy wooden door.

"Cousin?" She exclaimed, shooting confusion towards Aurin.
"Fawn, but-" The girl removed her arm from his and began to adjust her wardrobe as best she could, scrunching her nose up in disapproval. "I am not continuing that façade, Sir. Besides," Her gaze lifted and she fluffed out her cloak one last time as she flicked a playful, challenging grin at him. "I won't need it."

Aurin was an observant fellow, and he observed her closely while she was taking in the milieu of the Cabaret's main hall, and again in the hallways reserved for those who worked there. Even some quite professional hopefuls had come more for the opportunity to look than to perform, and that was yet another thing he had to protect the employees from. Some jokingly called him various plays on father for it, but most of them appreciated knowing that Madame Lunaria had things set up in such a way that her people, once vetted and accepted, were under her protection and not just resources for her to exploit for coin and prestige.

Whatever he thought about her reaction, he returned an amused half-smile. Lunaria would decide yea or nay, but then she would defer to him and her other lieutenants to keep things running smoothly. While he hadn't choreographed or orchestrated the recent show, merely stepping in because the artistic powers that be wanted to play off his popularity with the guests for laughs, there was an element of the puppeteer pulling strings when he was running things. The Velvet Cabaret did have its stars, but even they had to be an instrument that fit in with the larger ensemble.

Hearing Madame Lunaria's called invitation, he prepared to open the door for the budding chanteuse.

"Oh, good," he said, his voice entirely too earnest to be even remotely trustworthy. "She does love her women with balls. Break a leg."

That said, he pulled open the door, gave her a nudge inside, and then closed the door behind her. Now, ought he to stay by the door to listen and in case his employer should call out to him, or get back to the pressing issues of keeping her Cabaret running?

"I'm sorry," The good Madame decreed rather with a heavy hint of sarcasm, "but could you please... explain to me again what this is?" She gestured to the stack of papers on her desk, though incredibly small in comparison to the mountains of paperwork she was accustomed to, she still didn't quite grasp at what it was this particular subject was wanting to cover. Within the lavish velveteen room where the walls were painted red and the carpets a deeper crimson, Madame Lunaria sat down at her desk with Pascal heavy in her lap as he purred generously. The white-haired cat looked utterly unamused and carefree as he laid there, with his eyes shifting from closed to half-closed as he merely lingered there. There was the occasional stroke of her fingers or two along his spine, but the Madame was always a professional businesswoman, and right now business what what she discussed with another client.

"Basically, Ms. Zirnomei, a few of my colleagues, and I are researching astrology and the heavenly bodies. Did you know their alignments can influence the moods, even the lunar cycles have an impact on hormones and menstruation." The Madame didn't even have the audacity to appear interested, simply eyeing the poor brunette who sat across from her almost dumbfoundedly. "We're wanting to test a couple theories in regards to these cycles, such as the nature of influence they have on particular subjects. For example... Rathari." Now Lunaria's eyebrows rose as she realized what the point of this visit was, it wasn't just some project a few students of the Circle wanted to write about. They were looking for subjects it would seem, anybody she could volunteer for their research material, which in a roundabout way still brought business into her establishment.

"I see..." The proprietor remarked tactfully then as her tone almost cooed with opportunity.

"Word is you have many um... courtesans at your disposal? Anybody who is of Rathari born would help in this, around this time of year in fact, there are a good number of Rathari kin who'd treat this as their... um... mating season if you would prefer to call it that?"

"My dear sweet Annabelle," Madame Lunaria retorted heartily, "if I didn't know better, I'd say you and your friends could do with a good mating as you've refer to." The scholar's cheeks immediately reddened at the implication, leading the Madame to laugh aloud before a few familiar knocks resounded from the door. The matron quickly tilted her head in thought for a moment, realizing who they belonged to nearly an instant afterward, before hearing the pair of voices resound from beyond her door. "Oh, please, let it be something bloody better than lunar cycles..." The gods knew she already had enough problems with some of her courtesans, any more talk of it and she was likely to require another hourly break to sort through that nonsense.

Yet, when she lightly drummed her fingernails in a row along the surface of her desk, it wasn't the person she'd expected to enter when Madame Lunaria watched the doorway. Instead of seeing Aurin enter, after a brief explanation over his cousin, the Madame couldn't help but lightly smile at the sight of the woman that entered the room before her. "Oh my..." Annabelle still sat in her chair looking over her shoulder, curious as to what exactly was going on, now that another woman had entered the room. "Did we have an appointment?" The headmistress checked as she pulled one of her drawers open, presenting out a thick brown tome that smacked against the surface of her desk hard, venerating a bit of animosity in the cat as well, as his eyes were fixed on the newly arrived. Opening the tome without even looking up at her, Madame Lunaria pressed a finger down so that her nail trailed along a rather large list, her eyes sorting through every name as though she intended to find Fawn's within there.

Should the girl attempt to say anything at all, the Madame would merely raise a finger up to her, gesturing for her not to speak out of turn before sharp eyes rose from the page. "Oh! Of course, my dear! How could I have forgotten?! Aurin, be a dear, and set up an appointment for miss Annabelle here, then report back to me when you finished!" The Madame called to the door, anticipating that her most valid worker would see it through. Aurin had always had a way with getting things done around here, and Madame Lunaria was always quite the busy woman in general, therefore it was always a penchant to notice when her employees worked well in her establishment. "Annabelle darling it's been a treat, but it just happens that I've this very important appointment to attend with. Rest assured we'll find your Rathari, Aurin is the most informed chaperone I have here, and therefore, will see to your appointments in the near future."

The brunette's eyes widened and she flushed yet again, likely unsure if she wanted to volunteer herself for the research, or if she ought to rope one of her 'friends' to do it for her. Regardless, having being bade farewell the scholar rose from her seat, bowing before the Madame before leaving for the door. Annabelle might've glimpsed at Fawn when she passed, but it was clear in her expression that she didn't entirely want to be here. In leaving to meet with Aurin just outside the doorway, the office room was left alone once more, with Madame Lunaria leaning into her chair with an exhausted sigh before easing back forward. Pascal stretched as long as his fluffy legs could allow, before the cat shifted to hop atop the corner of her desk, nonchalantly licking at one of his paws as the Madame herself looked to the girl in question. Fawn. Truth be told... there was no such appointment. Yet her timing had been perfect, for that dried up prune of a damsel was grating her nerves.

"Well," The Madame gestured to the empty chair before her desk, with the small spectacles on her nose tapped to brush up the bridge as she closed the tome from earlier, "have a seat then! If Aurin's brought you to me then it ought to be for good reason." Of that she had no doubt, since he was secretly becoming her favorite. "What brings you to my temple of sin?"

Aurin's voice faded into the back of her mind as the room commanded her attention. Every detail of the room an exquisite representation of the importance of the woman.. and apparently her cat, which only moments ago the girl had assumed had been a strange joke Aurin told. Fawn couldn't hide her bewilderment as she stared at the strangely quiet, well-fed cat whos hair was so finely groomed she wondered if it was even a cat at all. More than the Madame's presence now, she was intrigued by the idea, nay the reality, that a cat of all all beings would find themselves in such a place- and clearly willingly, and without a spec of dirt upon it's pearlescent fur. It was positively jarring, but it brought a tiny amused smile to her lips. If someone could tame a cat, then they were for sure powerful. Or insane.

The girl jolted as the thud of the booklet came down upon the table, mirroring the cats brief surprise as she watched the woman's elegant finger trail down the pages before finally meeting her gaze with Fawn's. The farmgirl, so juxtapose in the lavish room, adjusted the satchel on her back and watched as the strangely timid woman scurried out of the room in haste. When the door finally closed behind her Fawn bowed without ever taking her gaze off the woman's impeccably clean cat. But.. the chair the Madame gestured to was awfully close to the cat.

Then it hit her. It wasn't a cat after all! It was someone using Animus magic like Marina had told her! No one in their right mind would ever get that close to a real cat, and a real cat would never stay indoors or be that well groomed! She grinned almost knowingly, prideful in her accomplishment of having figured out the trick, and took the seat offered while placing her bag on the ground without a second thought.
"Thank you, Madame," She started, adjusting her sore legs beneath her. "First I'd like to clear up a misunderstanding. I'm not Aurin's cousin, though I am here to audition for your stage." Her eyes travelled to the cat. "Or is it your stage?" She said, flashing a bright grin at the person-disguised-as-a-cat.

Madame Lunaria didn't wait to peer down at the stack of parchments on her desk, glancing lightly up to Fawn when she made her way to join her at the desk. Had she shown hesitance? Did she seem to heavily regard Pascal with suspicion? Though hardly even prompted to say anything, Lunaria was certainly a bit amused with Fawn's candor, her gaze finally lifting when she heard the girl address the cat himself. Pascal!? Owning the stage!? The absurdity generated mirth from the busty mistress, allowing her to disregard the papers entirely, as she leaned heavily into the chair she sat in once more. "Oh, honey, aren't you adorable." Her voice chimed with lilted tones of amusement as she leaned forward once more, her elbows rested on the desk as she rested her plump chin just over a few curled fingers. "I'm well aware of our little' Aurin's bluff on your behalf, nothing said within my halls ever elude me." It was a simple show of amusement on her part, but it was also clear, that amusement was put to rest when the other subject came into play.

An audition. On her stage? "Well toots, we have many who appreciate the spotlight, better than the postulants at the Golden Peacock at least." Pascal's head shifted so that he no longer licked at his paw, rather, gave Fawn a hard and dismal stare with his sharp eyes. "Although I have to admit, it's not every day Aurin sticks his neck out for someone like you." The Madame pointed out with a fingertip brushing along her lips, with a hint of curiosity in her eyes before she leaned back once more. "Very well," the auburn hair-colored mistress nodded in turn, "you have five minutes of my time..."

It was then Madame Lunaria relaxed in her chair, hands folded together briefly, before Pascal loomed close enough to demand head scratches from the woman. Lunaria obliged her dear friend of course, but watched Fawn diligently with eyes that looked to appraise her from top to bottom.
