Oh, You Sweet Summer Child.

xxxHe’d watched her for nearly three days now. The first he knew it would be too soon to approach, the second his plans were crushed by a wolf mongrel of a man, and the third… well. Third time’s a charm. And he intended to be very charming. His name was Lancelot Havershim IIVth, son of the late Lancelot Havershim IVth, and the only living Havershim left. He was a tall, tanned man with grey and black peppered hair and dark hazel eyes. His nose, pinched, held a pair of reading glasses which he removed promptly as he adjusted the top of his dark grey cloak to ready himself for the afternoon ahead.

xxxDamn. If he did say so himself, he was handsome. And a fantastic mesmer mage. Though no one else would likely give him that sort of praise, least of not his past mentor. But he had no need for that old coot - tonight he would prove to himself yet again exactly what it was that made him a fantastic mage. He would get the girl. The innocent, bubbly, new to town, naive Fawn. And he wouldn’t need to take no for an answer. But he would need a different tactic.

~~

xxxFawn was dressed in her simple blue linen dress and cream top, which was admittedly less than ideal clothing for such a cold Frost, but her mishap with laundry earlier that day left her without a cloak. It was a lesson she wouldn’t soon forget as she stepped into Veyl's Clothier's, an unfortunate lack of coin on hand, but ready nonetheless to spend the last of what she had on a second cloak fit for the cold of Frost that lingered behind her.

xxxShe smiled as the clerk greeted her, cheeks as red as her hair, and began flicking through the racks of cloaks in the front of the shop. Wool, linen, bright blue, deep red, every manner of color and fabric was available, and after a few moments of searching she finally picked a simple white wool cloak with pockets on both the inside and outside of it’s design. Perfect for someone like her, always losing things, and always carrying way too much. She smiled and brought the piece to the counter and paid her dues with a gulp of hesitation from the price. Not ideal, but necessary. As the newly poor girl exited the shop, she threw it over her shoulders, it’s warmth instantly taking hold of her and she sighed in relief. Even though it had not been made by her aunt, it smelled and felt like home. Like safety. ’So much better!’

xxx ”Excuse me, are you..?”
She turned towards the horizon where the sun had begun to set to see the very man who had been scared witless the day before approaching her with a soft smile.
xxx ”It really is you, I wanted to apologize. I was eager to meet you and got a little ahead of myself, and I didn’t mean to anger your friends.” She had been about to walk away, leave him behind just as Telion and Rickter had warned her, but something in his kind features drew her in and beckoned her to stay. She hesitated at first, but smiled at him reassuringly.

xxx ”It’s alright. I’m sure they’re fine.” She said, shrugging and clasping the cloak closed with the decorative woven button symbolizing Veyl's Clothier's logo. The man sighed in relief and brought a hand to his forehead, sheepishly grinning before putting both hands in his pockets and clearing his throat as if breaking tension in his own being.

xxx ”Well, I would still like to make it up to you. How about this, I can walk you home and show you around the city a little more, and if you’d like you can tell me all about what it is you want to learn as a mage and I will think of which connections I may have that you can speak to.” Outwardly, he smiled softly at her and offered his arm. But, inwardly he was salivating and drawing on tiny tendrils of aether to entwine with his words and his eyes. Had it been done to any other person, they may have seen the glint in his eye or even noticed the air of aether slowly slipping from his lips to her, but he had chosen his prey perfectly. She had no idea what to look for, or how to avoid it.

xxxThere couldn’t be any harm in this, she thought, after all he was apologizing and had connections to her most desperate needs- magic. And, the best kinds of people are the humble. And so she smiled, and nodded at him with excitement as she placed one hand on his arm. ”That sounds wonderful, but I didn’t catch your name. I’m Fawn.”

xxx“Pleased to meet you officially, Fawn. I am Lancelot. Now, let’s get you home. Now, where abouts are you stationed?” He asked, beginning to walk nonetheless exactly where he knew her to live. Where he’d watched her through her window for the first two nights.
xxxFawn matched his pace rather easily, as she had been very used to keeping up with horses. ”I’m actually behind the dumpling shop near the entrance to the city.” The man nodded with all the regality of a man ready to court a woman. Back straight, arm locked, and onward they walked.

xxxPerhaps if Fawn had been paying attention while they talked she would have noticed that she no longer recognized any buildings. Even in the dark of the night that had covered the city after the sun had set, that unlike the commoner style homes and buildings of the West entrance, the buildings were becoming much more widely spaced and the walls were now higher. There were less people around, as well, which gave him all the reason he needed to pull off to the side of the street and tuck them down an alleyway.
xxxFawn raised a brow. ”Wait- where are we going?” She asked, her heart suddenly quickening.

“Shortcut.” He said, his voice excited but.. somehow dark.
She stopped. ’No...something is wrong.. Why does this feel wrong?’
”I.. I think I’ll find my own way-” Fawn pulled her arm from his and took a step back.
But Lancelot frowned. He was so close- just two blocks ahead. No small mishap, no dumb broad, no stupid woman was denying him, not tonight, and not ever again. And this time she didn’t have that mongrel of a wolf with her.

xxx”That won’t be necessary, we’re almost back.” He stated, forcing a smile back upon his face and tethering aether into every word. Albeit sloppily, and grabbing her by the arm. He was desperate, and desperation and aether never mix well with people like him.
Panic began to set into the girl's bones as she tried to yank her arm out of his hand. She felt nauseous, her head ached, he suddenly reminded her of the snakes she was normally so disgusted by, and she realized in that moment that no matter how hard she pulled he would not let go. Rickter and Telion had been right- she shouldn’t have trusted him.

㊋Hyo was getting quite used to the Kalzasi evenings and nights, the weather wasnt too far off from what he was used to. Being born in the open valleys of the wild, and growing up with the natural aversion to colder weather he used to how brisk it could get. This night was a good one, a day off and he was enjoying some much-needed him time.

He had been out walking the streets like he normally did, finding both the walk and the tranquility of being alone in the city streets to be calming to his mind. Sitting on a bench, he pulled out a small flask that had his favorite ale in it. Taking a swig he looked to the sky, admiring the beauty of a setting sun, and the night sky that would come soon, littered with stars. It was both awe-inspiring and beautiful only to be complemented by the lit lanterns of the streets.

He would find myself spending the next hour or so, sitting on that bench, humming a tune his mother used to sing to him growing up. Midway through however the Kathar noticed a rare sight. It was her hair that caught his attention, but more so it was the fellow that seemed to be waiting for her that caused his curiosity to flare up. Standing Hyo began to get closer to the two, trying his best to stay out of sight but here what was being said.

Something about the man was off to the Kathar, and he couldn't quite place what it was, but he felt something in the air about him. The longer he hung around the more he felt it, till he saw the man's eyes, the glimmer of aether working in them. He was a mage and was using magic on the girl. There was only a handful of magics that allowed manipulation of other people, and this guy must be using one of them.

That alone was enough for Hyo to take action, less something horrible happened to the woman. Deciding it would be better to tail from above, as his shadow would go unnoticed at night, Hyo took the air, keeping pace with the two, but having just out of sight of the duo as they walked.

He knew that timing was key, cause if things went left, he would have to swoop in and dispatch the man quickly. And just as he would have guessed, it did. They had gone down an alley, and once she realized something wasn't right, she began to protest the strange man's assistance. He was however annoying persistent and was about to get forceful.

Seeing that as his cue to step in, Hyoga came to land behind the man, his form sihloutted by the moonlit night. Palming the man by his head, he used his wing to separate the man from the pretty redhaired woman. "I don't think the lady wants your help any more." he said with an affirming tone. ㊋

xxxHis slimy hands gripped her arm like a vice, squeezing the flesh as if trying to bond himself with her as she attempted to pull away. A bead of sweat dripped from his brow as his eyes glimmered only just, and he poured more aether into his tongue.
xxx "Now now, I don't want you getting hurt, such a pretty-" And then, suddenly his head felt all too well concealed. A hand nearly the size of his skull itself had wrapped around him and was nearly bursting the mans head like a grape. He froze, the aether died from his eyes and he swiveled to see the mammoth of a man, with huge wings spanning nearly the entire alleyway, become the very nuisance he had been trying to avoid. What was it with this girl and her bodyguards? He spat on the ground at the man and glared fiercely. It was then his true colors came out in full bloom. Or rather, explosion, as he turned his menacing eyes towards Fawn.

xxx "Is that innocence all an act? Have you whored half the city to do your bidding?" He growled, pulling against the hand that had worn him like a hat.
Fawn just stood there. What was it with her meeting strange men in alleyways recently? She pulled the crystal white cloak around her shoulders as she panted, adrenaline ringing through her body. Something had been horribly wrong about this man. It was a type of strange, disgusting danger that she'd never come across before and just looking at the man now, with his peppered hair and sweaty, tanned flesh made her skin crawl. She shivered.

xxx"Thank you.." The farmgirl took a brief step back as her breath swirled visibly in the cold night air in front of her. The man was huge. She'd heard of his kind before... something Ava? Avi? Ave? He stood nearly two feet taller than her and as she looked up at him her heart slowed. Right, she'd be okay now. The girl took a deep breath with closed eyes. But when she opened them the fear had been replaced with a seething rage and she glared at him with the fire of an active volcano.
xxx "You're rude!" She screamed, and promptly kicked the man between the legs with every ounce of strength she had in her petite body. Which, was surprisingly a lot. For when the foot hit his groin a crunch was heard. The man let out the air in lungs and doubled over, gasps for air turning to childish sobs as he cupped his damaged good.

xxx "You bitch-" He panted. She stuck up her nose at him and scoffed, crossing her arms and trying her best not to shiver as the night air became colder around her. Cloaks were great, but they only did so much in the dead of Frost. Especially after ones adrenaline leaves their body.
xxx"You unhand a lady when she asks." She stated. Truth be told, she had no idea what the man had been planning to do. Something just felt off. Wrong. Unsettling. Though in the back of her mind she was slowly beginning to understand- some people really wanted sex. It still didn't make all that much sense to her given her limited understanding of the act, though, and she pushed the thought away for the moment as she unconsciously took a few steps closer to the winged man and the heat that he radiated like a furnace.

㊋ He was thrilled he had stepped in when he did, otherwise this creep would have done something even Hyo couldn't forgive. He watched the exchange between the two, the way the guy spoke to her, spoke about her, and had heard just about enough to make the thought of crushing his head against the alley wall a reality.

The damsel in distress had other plans. Despite his intimidating stature and the fact he was here to help, the woman took matters into her own hands and disabled him with a swift kick to the balls. Hyoga tried as hard as he could, but he let out a robust laugh watching the man collapse to the floor in pain. It seemed she was quite the little spitfire.
"He's gonna feel that in the morning for sure!" he chuckled, listening to her reprimand him like a misbehaved child. Her sense of courage was adorable, given her stature, and the fact she was shivering under that cloak. When she came to stand next to him, he decided to scoop her in with his wing, given the space he had within the alleyway.

From his hand came his spear, cloaked in a fiery aura of fluorescent glowing blues, greys, and black. Pointing the spearhead at the man, Hyoga tapped his face with it, which caused the man to flinch. "If you know what's good for you, you'll listen and listen well. The lady clearly wants nothing to do with you, so it is in your best interest to stay away from her. But even more so whatever magic you were working on her, using to manipulate her, makes you worse than the shit on the streets of Low-City. So let this be a fair warning, if you come near her again, I'll see to it that the shambles in the Warrens feast upon your wretched corpse."

With that, Hyoga gave the man a swift kick to his stomach, cause the fellow to slide down the alley a bit, reeling in pain. Part of him knew that meddling in this affair would come back to bite him in the end, but it was worth it. This man was trash for what he was doing and Hyoga felt it was the only honorable thing he knew he could do for the woman.

Turning to her he knelt down brushed off some dirt the man kicked up on her cloak. "I hope he didn't grip you up to badly. Scum was using magic to manipulate you for his own gain." he said as he stood, dematerializing his weapon. "You think you can make it on your own back home?" he inquired, scratching the back of his head as he knew he couldn't offer to take her home, that's how she got in this mess in the first place.

But if she asked him to escort her, he would gladly oblige her. ㊋

xxxAll in all, the man had gotten off fairly easily. A swift crunch of his precious gems and ribs and a mild scolding when he deserved much worse, but it was certainly not in his mind to try again anytime soon as he scurried off into the night like a whipped pup. As Fawn watched him run away the alleyway went quiet. The only noises left remaining were the shifting of fabrics and her slowly regulating breathing, and the winged mans voice.

It was then she realized that his wing had enveloped her body like blanket, keeping the warmth in and feeling oddly comforting despite how claustrophobic the small space might have normally made her feel. And, it was odd. As he knelt down to dust the girl off it was only then they were at eye level. He was ungodly tall, stunning, his wings looking like sapphires born of the night sky. As if the world had bestowed upon him the legends of the oceans. She couldn't help but think of his appearance as that of royalty in some way- after all aren't all royalty supposed to be as glorious as he?

Fawn tilted her head to the side and raised a brow at him, blinking confusion. "Magic? But I didn't see anything- I didn't feel anything... can magic do that?" She asked, her hands pulling the hem of her cloak together to shield her body from any more cold that threatened to consume her. The wind had also begun to pick up and while gentle, still bit her nose and cheeks to turn them a soft shade of pink. The last few days had been shocking. Nearly every day a new type of magic or creature or person was revealed to her, all of which she'd been astounded by. Her mind scrambled to process it all as the weight of her days came crashing down on her mind. It was all getting overwhelming. First there had been Lunaria's cat, who wasn't really a cat obviously, next had been Telion, and Rickter, and then the Grimoire and Lyra, and then Mino... and now, both the snake of a person who had nearly kidnapped her and this winged man.

She was quiet for a moment as the lingering aether of Lancelot's magic slowly withered away. "I.. think so." She said, turning to walk towards the street corner and check which direction exactly she'd need to head in- but what she saw shocked her. Just moments ago she could have sworn she'd been surrounded by people, walking in the open market, and headed to her home. How long had it been that they'd been walking? Where was the market? Which direction was home? The girl stood in the middle of the street looking both ways wildly before she turned back to the winged man. "Actually. I don't know where I am.." Fawn said softly, pulling the cloak around her tightly as the wind tunneled itself through the streets and swirled around her, sending her hair into a brief frenzy.

The girl quickly brushed it to the side, a bit annoyed and making note to bring a bobble next time. "Can you lead me back to the Jeweled Arches? I should be able to make my way home from there, I wouldn't want to put you too out of your way, Mister- OH!" She startled, suddenly realizing. "I never got your name. I'm Fawn."

㊋ The Kathar actually preferred it this way, as it would be easy on his conscious if he personally saw to it that she was safe from creeps like that. With a nod, he stood up and smiled. "I don't mind that at all." When she mentioned that he didn't introduce himself, he slapped himself in the face out of embarrassment.

"My bad, I should have given you my name earlier. My name is Hyoga, Hyoga Yoko. But my friends call me Hyo.....well they would if I had any, I'm kinda still new to the big city myself." he said nervously, scratching the back of his head. "Well of course, its not too far from where we are now."

He motioned for her to follow as he exited the alley with her, making to keep a watchful eye out in case that clod came back with friends, not that Hyo would mind that, the more filth to clean up the better. As they walked he felt compelled to answer her question from earlier. "As to answer your question from earlier, yes magic can do such a thing like manipulating people. My magic allows me to manipulate the elements, but the magic that man was using....well I think his was more so manipulating the mind I think. Though I've only seen it once, so I'm no expert by any means." he explained, laughing nervously as well.

Shaking his head he tried his best to refocus on the task at hand, he was too focused on not making a fool of himself in front of her and needed to ensure she would be safe on her way home. He could look at her and tell she was not from the city just like him, and she seemed to look at him with some sort of intrigue.

"Don't worry about that guy, it was my fault for not showing up sooner. I noticed something was wrong with him and had been following you two just in case." he said, shielding her from a cold breeze. She was rather easy on the eyes, so his nerves and awkwardness slowly began to subside.

Looking to change the subject, Hyo opted to keep her mind occupied with some small talk. "Where you born here in the city? I don't think I've ever seen someone with hair like yours before."

xxxFawn's breath fogged in the air as she laughed out loud. He was a curious sort- a huge, mammoth of a man with wings spanning the entirety of some of the buildings but here he was embarrassed. She smiled as her laugh faded, beginning to walk with him and watching her surroundings so as to memorize the city. After all, she couldn't have people escorting her forever. Even if she did like the company, which she took a step closer to as the wind began to pick up, causing her to shiver lightly in response.

xxxThe encounter had been... uncomfortable. It felt wrong, dangerous, many things she's never felt before. Hell if anything it had only proved Mino correct- the city may have some dangers to it. But it couldn't be all bad, and so she listened comfortably to Hyoga's explanations. If she knew what was coming then perhaps she could protect herself, perhaps. "How is it done? Can I avoid it?" She asked, peering up at the immensely tall man with curiosity as another cold wind chilled her nose and set the freckled nub pink.

xxxShortly lasted, thankfully, as his wing covered her and created a small pocket of warmth. The girl smiled. "Well, I'll thank you for that, then. But it's not your fault, you still saved me. And he likely won't be trying that again anytime soon." She said, looking forward once more and bundling her arms up together under the cover of her cloak. As they walked she sighed contently. Her heart had finally slowed to a manageable pace, and the adrenaline had completely left her body as well. She felt at ease with the man, even if curiosity about his wings made her want to rattle off a million questions at him. Though, she knew better than to ask a person if she could ride on their back like a dragon.

xxxThe girl let out a soft chuckle at her own thought as she answered him. "No, I was born in a town about five days ride from here. Small little village, about fifty of us total. But, no hair like mine there either. I left, came here in search of magic, knowledge. I want to learn of the world and see what I am capable of." She said, unconsciously drifting closer to the warmth of the man and reaching through the top of her cloak to pull at a strand of hair. Her eyes gazed at it fondly, stroking the piece and then dropping it to play with the necklace she wore under her cloak. Out of sight, but it was clear her fingers danced across something with tenderness through the movement of her clothing. "I was found as a baby in a barn, the woman who took me in I now call mother. But, I am not related to anyone in my town. Wherever this hair came from though, I would be shocked to think they'd be so willing to get rid of it!" She laughed as she dropped the necklace from her hand and began to rub her arms more. She never blamed her birth mother. No one gives up a child easily, and if she could one day find the woman she would be elated. For now though, she was happy knowing she still had one small piece of her with her. The necklace.

xxx"What about you, Hyoga, what's your story?" She asked, her gaze catching his with honest curiosity, a tender smile pulling at her lips.

"I too was born outside of the city. I lived in a village near the mountains." he began, looking at their surroundings as they walked. "It was quite a large village, but everyone knew each other, and we all did what we could to protect and help one another." he added, a look fondness of his face as past memories began to flood his mind.

"We were warriors and mages of honor, courage, and respect. We made a living hunting monsters and nefarious people. It was all such a wonderful life growing there. I miss it." he continued, his tone shifting from the fondness of reminiscing to something sorrowful.

"Then around my 18th birthday my parents were taken from me, my village attacked and burned to the ground. It's the main reason why I've come to Kalzasi, my mother's dying wish was to come here and find my aunt. I haven't found her yet, but I'm hoping she'll help me in bringing my village, my parent's justice." he finished, tears trickling down his face, cooling his face in the frost weather.

Wiping them he shook his head, trying to not let that ruin the mood of their walk. He felt even more awkward now, as he allowed himself to become vulnerable to a complete stranger, for all he knew she could have been one of the ones responsible for the attack, or at least related to them in some way. But upon closer inspection of her, and seeing how she handled that creep from earlier, he doubted it.

"Sorry about that, I didn't mean to dampen the mood like that. On a better subject, how have you come to like the city? I find there are lots to do from finding work to entertainment." he inquired, looking ahead of them to see the Jeweled Arches in the distance. ㊋

xxxHer hair bounded on her shoulders as the pair made their way towards the Jeweled Arches, but all the while she looked at him fondly. He had pain, too. It seemed many of the city folk were riddled with it, and she wondered then if the city was more of a gathering of misfits. But his voice was soothing, his presence calming, and even though he spoke of pain she could feel the comfort he naturally gave off like a blanket to the darkness of the world.

"I'm so sorry... But I'm sure you'll find her. The city is only so large." She spoke softly, placing a hand on his forearm as they continued into a more familiar part of town. They took a right, passing by the Cabaret, and she breathed a sigh of relief as she saw the familiar glow of the dumpling shop in the far distance.

"It's alright." She smiled at him and sniffled in the cold air as another breeze caught itself under her skin. "Well, I only arrived two days ago but I've found myself to like it very much. I know I have a lot to see, but I can’t help but feel anxious to get started learning magic as soon as possible.” She laughed, her bright voice filling the air around them. A few leftover drunk patrons from bars looked at the odd pair as they walked, both impressed by Hyoga as well as briefly charmed by the girl and her fiery locks.

“Though, I’m sure I should try to be more patient.”

"Yeah, I hoping to find her soon myself" he concurred with a light laugh. This girl, this pretty girl was just like him in some regard, and he couldn't help but have the odd feeling of being comfortable around her. Was it her bubbly disposition, or that brief moment of being a spitfire? She held a certain charm to her for sure.

He listened intently as she explained her reason for being in the city, searching for someone to teach her magic, only arriving a few days ago at that. She seemed rather enthused about the subject, which Hyo could also appreciate as he too was fascinated by magic to a degree. "Well Kalzasi seems to be the place where anything is possible that's for sure. I'm certain you'll find someone who'll teach you the way"

He then had a perfect idea, running up to one of the bars and taking one of the fire lit lanterns, and bringing it back over to Fawn. Taking the lid off of it, he held his hand out in front of the flickering flames. "If you like magic, I'm sure you'll love this." he spoke, his hand giving off a faint shimmer as aether poured into it, the flames seeming to nip at it till they soon coiled around his hand.

They traveled up his arm and around his head, coming to float playfully in front of him and Fawn. "I have the rune magic of Elementalism. It's a magic that allows one to connect and commune with the elements so to speak. I ask the elements to aid me in exchange for aether, the source of how most magics work." he demonstrated, as the flames began to dance around to the direction of his finger.

He was sure she would be ecstatic to see something like this. "I also have the rune magic of Reaving, which is a combative magic, as it allows one to form pacts with weapons, permanently engraving them into your soul, but allowing you to call them forth at a moments notice, like so." he went on to explain as in his free hand, he materialized his spear, the fiery hues of blue, black, & grey wafting off it along with the halo over his head of the same color scheme.

"Magic will definitely add some excitement to your life for sure. Why are you wanting to learn magic anyway? Something about it intrigues you?" he inquired, dematerializing his spear as he continued to walk with her, the flame still dancing around him like a moon orbiting its respective planet. ㊋
