Mino didn't often think much of the details of his line of work. That was usually meant for someone else -- Berry or Admiral, or even Ocean when she could be bothered, with Lady Blue as the last word -- but he could appreciate that a lot of thought usually was required. Now, though, he was starting to think they were slacking off. It was, to be fair, broad daylight and this was nothing more than routine. A quick in and out that he had known from his time as a tyke (well, not tyke, but he'd certainly been small enough to be considered one). He should have been able to do this with his eyes closed. Should being the key word.

What wasn't accounted for was the person he was stealing from being home. With their mistress. In the throes of a passionate bout of lovemaking. Generally, he was all for a good show, but this probably was something that warranted more privacy and he might be a little scarred from the experience. He didn't think an ass could be that pimpled, but you learn new things every day. Mino, at the very least, had been able to grab what was needed, but it also meant he had to take off promptly.

The city around him blurred as he slipped into back alleys, paws slapping down against the slick streets. The monotone palette of brick and stone followed him closely as he evaded the thundering footsteps of the Sky Guard that had already arrived. They'd been surprisingly quick in their arrival; record time maybe? It made Mino wonder how much what he had taken had been worth, or how much the person he'd taken it from had been willing to shell out. Maybe it wasn't even the Sky Guard. Interested parties could easily use this as an in to someone's money. Times could be hard enough for such a thought. Or someone could be ambitious enough.

He rounded a corner, finding himself behind what looked like a bakery. Crates were stacked high, not quite toward the roof of the building but he could make do. He slowed enough to prep for a jump, jaw clamping down on the object wrapped in cloth to keep it from slipping. And took off. The practiced push of his hind legs threw him towards the first crate, which he bounced off to something higher. The slanted roof of the bakery was soon level with him on the next jump.

Mino's paws skidded along the thatch for a moment before he steadied himself, continuing in his escape. All he had to do was make it to the rendezvous point.

☵ Hey! Put that back!
☵ 25th of Frost, Year 120, A.o.S

☵ Hyoga had been out patrolling the city, something that he did to calm his nerves when he was feeling agitated from not having his itch for a fight. Landing on a nearby rooftop, he watched the surroundings for something, anything to help satiate his thirst for some action. At this point, he would take just about anything just for a little excitement.

Hyo then heard some commotion coming from one of the homes on his left, moving over to see what it was, thinking the worse and excited for whatever it was too. To his surprise, it was no attack, but the congregation of guards outside the home, and to his surprise a cat running away with something in its mouth.

He was hoping for a better turn out here, given how treacherous the area was with gangs and such and it could be deadly to the unprepared. The sounds of shouting coming down the path from the guards searching the local area made Hyoga believe that whatever the cat had taken mist have been valuable.

He decided it would be easier to just trap the feline with the elements, but the barrier he had erected was simply jumped over, and it caused Hyoga to stand to his feet, as he now would have to actually give chase to a cat of all things, thinking he had hit rock bottom for sure.

"Hey! Put that back you thieving cat!" he shouted but the feline was already too far gone by the time he got on the move. He didn't want to have to chase after some cat but hey it was some sort of excitement and he wasn't going to pass it up. ☵

The thief stopped to look back, checking for any sign of his pursuers only to find that he had gained a new one. A big, hulking winged one. His yowl was muffled as he pushed off once more, slowly slightly before the jump to make it to the next roof. Of all the things - an avialae. Normally, he didn't mind birds. They were interesting to watch and their flight patterns could be pretty. Hell, they were fun to catch and easy to eat.

But avialae were not just birds.

They had the smarts of a person and the size of bulls on their side. Admiral was problem enough, but her stature combined with her stubbornness; there was no winning. His hind legs pushed off once more, vaulting him over the ledge of one roof that connected with another. If he wasn't careful, he'd run out of room soon. And on top of that - he was out in the open. Prime space for him to be snatched up in a way that wasn't mutually agreed upon. He searched for a spot that might give him safe passage to the ground.

The sky was clearly, mostly. The sun was...somewhere. Didn't people have things to do? Plays to watch, food to eat. People to fuck? He huffed as he thought of how he might have been home, napping by the fire if not for Lady Blue's reliance on him. Perhaps he ought to be proud of himself for being skilled enough that she would continue to take notice of him. Proud for being able to hold a surname. But pride was nothing when comfort and a sweet glass of milk was involved. He'd have to ask Berry to get him one for his trouble.

He would, though, really liked if he could just do his job. A simple take and go. The person could probably buy another one of these, and his client could have easily obtained it themselves through similar means. But people were strange like that. They wanted things more immediately. He glanced over his shoulder, nearly tripped over himself for his trouble. Behind him, the avialae was gaining on him.

☵ Hey! Put that back!
☵ 25th of Frost, Year 120, A.o.S

☵ As he followed the feline, he realized it was not a normal cat, nor was it the size of the one that's for sure. This one was bigger, and it seemed to notice Hyo and was darting away to try and lose him. Well If that's how the cat wanted to play, then Hyo would oblige it. "Why don't you give me a hand here?" he whispered.

With his hand full of aether, he placed it on the ground as he lowered his altitude to come to a slowed stop. The ground beneath the trail gave way, following the path of the cat only for it to miss its mark, which made Hyo suck his teeth and take to the sky again, looking for the large feline again. He was starting to become rather annoyed if he was to be honest with himself. How hard could it be to catch a cat anyway?

Once he spotted the fleeing cat, he decided to try once more, but this time corralling the cat in a wall of stone that jutted up from the ground just high enough to stop the cat from fleeing. "Alright little guy, hand it over and I'll let you be on your way. I may hunt monsters, but I dont slay common animals just for the hell of it." he said, trying to ease his way toward the animal.

It didn't have anywhere to truly go at this point, and Hyo was prepared to gain some bites or scratches if the thing wanted to get physical. All he knew was that it took something that didn't belong to it, and he needed to get it back, as there could be a nice reward in it for him if he did. That alone was more than enough motivation to spur him to catch this cat and return what was stolen.

"Come now, be a good cat and hand that over."

If Mino stopped stealing whenever someone told him to, he'd be a terrible thief. Even worse if it was something he was being paid to steal, rather than stealing with the intention of selling. Lady blue would have tosses him aside a long time ago if that were the case. And there was no telling where he would be if that ever happened.

So it could be forgiven that he didn't stop when the Avialae had asked him to cooperate.

Cooperating with the authorities was something he did when he was meant to pass as a simple accountant, manager of finance and assets for his family. The family. The hairs along his back rose as the Avialae tossed something at him. He looked back and it was - it was nothing. It was nothing and something and yet; he couldn't see it. He just knew. Maybe because the terrain had been changed. Had fallen away where he'd once been. If things had not been bad before, they were now. The Avialae chasing him was a mage.

He'd interacted with his fair share of mages, but that didn't mean that he had to like it. And he didn't like this, not one bit. Especially not when a wall was erected in front of him. He hardly had time to stop before he was crashing into it. The pads of his paws stung as he skidded to a stop. Too tender for him to try hopping the wall, either. But it didn't stop him, initially. He leapt forward, sought to dig his claws in, but the sting of pain was too much. He dropped down, turning so that he could at least face the winged menace that was getting between him and his work.

Common? Mino supposed he should find that insulting, and highly at that. He wasn't exactly common by many standards. His caramel-colored coat was pristine, and his eyes shown like stained glass in the light. Common was not what had gotten him chosen by his superior. The wing mage approached and he only stepped further away, backing himself into a literal corner as he hissed.

He couldn't give up the prize, not now. Not yet. He did the opposite of what the Avialae might have desired, swatting at the mage with claws outstretched and standing on his hackles. The growls he let loose were muffled by the cloth in his mouth, but loud enough to be heard as the warning that they were. A wall wouldn't stop the cat from clawing the bird's eyes out if he gave Mino reason for it.

☵ In all honesty he was not liking having to bully this animal but he figured that the best way to catch it was to corner it. Kneeling in front of it, he extended a hand, trying to be as nonthreatning as he could, though that couldn't be helped as he was a giant compared to the large feline itself.

If he didn't get that thing from it soon, he was going to have to resort to some harsh methods. While pondering how to go about it he had the best idea he could think of. Using his aether, he called upon the aid of the earth beneath the large feline, causing it to come up around the animal. Wrapping around its body, Hyo trapped in a cage of stone.

The cage was large enough to hold the animal, but confined enough to keep it in place. With a sigh he went to take the swaddled object from the cat, unwrapping it to find a statue in it. To Hyo's eyes it wasn't really anything special. It just seemed like an ordinary statue to him, so he couldn't quite fathom why the cat would want to steal it?

"Why would you want this little guy? Was it cause it was shiny?" he inquired, not expecting an answer from the animal. But then something clicked in his mind. If the statue was covered in cloth, how did the cat know it was shiny. Something wasn't adding up here, and the circumstances of this theft seemed to come into question.

No ordinary cat would have been smart enough to get a cloth and wrap the statue up in order to make it easier to carry, they would have just held it in their mouths. That meant this was no normal cat. Looking to the caged animal, Hyo manifested his spear and pointed the tip at the feline. "I take it then you are no normal cat, so if you know what's good for you, you'll start talking." he demanded from the animal or whatever the hell it was. ☵

Mino wasn’t a fan of cages.

He really wasn’t. Hackles raised, he hissed as he observed the cage forming around him. Large enough to fit him without being cramped — but still a cage. His vision danced for a moment and the sky above looked an awful lot like the robin’s egg blue of Lady Blue’s rooms. He’d rather not think about that, much less the memories that came with them. The cat blinked, glared at the stone walls. If he could, he’d give the Avialae a solid scratching.

As a cat, Mino could not readily answer anything the other asked him. Nothing verbally, of course. He could curse the winged bastard as much as he wanted to in his head, and it would never be heard. Or, he could speak the words given to him by his feline form. As the Avialae reached in to grab the statue, he swatted at his hand. Nothing major; perhaps a single cut. His nail lodged into skin and drew back. The sharp tang of blood in the air. Mino drew back and rumbled out a low growl, less than pleased.

His tail flicked, ears swiveling forward. He turned his head away from the Avialae, giving an annoyed mewl as he spoke. The same sweetened way of speaking most people took on when they wanted to approach him. Usually when Lady Blue had him on display for potential clients to take in. A pass of his tongue over his teeth, mouth wide as he yawned.

Mino merely blinked as the spear was pointed his way. What was the point of demanding a cat speak? He flicked his tail again, lowered his head to rest on his front paws. If he wanted to put Mino in a cage, so be it. It wasn’t like he could contest that in his current state. His tail flicked again in the way it did when a cat was annoyed and it clearly showed. An unimpressed yowl left him, turning into a purr as he settled in.

He’d be here for quite some time. He’d played this game before. And they’d let him go after getting fed up with him. Or, someone would berate the person. But he doubted someone would happen upon the two now to shout at the Avialae for holding a cat at spearpoint. But — whatever the Avialae thought he’d figured out, Mino would simply have to work around it.

Improvisation had been good for him so far.

☵ His eyes narrowed when the cat didn't respond, finally realizing how crazy he looked scolding a mere animal to answer him. "Guess you are just an ordinary stray after all huh?" he question coming to sit down in front of the cage. The night air licked at the cut on his hand given so graciously to him by the large feline, which he hoped the cat didnt have any diseases but who knew.

Looking at the statue some more he was trying to figure out what made it so special. To him, it was just an ordinary statue, nothing to really make a fuss over in his opinion. So why did this little guy want it so bad? He looked to the feline then back to the statue. As much as he wanted to believe it was an ordinary cat, too many things weren't adding up for him.

No ordinary cat would take the time to wrap up a statue instead of just taking it with their mouth, so as far as he was concerned, his theory of this one not being an ordinary cat still stands. He would get to the bottom of this so he came up with a plan. Sitting the statue in front of him and in arms reach of the cage, Hyo expanded the stone prison, large enough to where a human could sit comfortably.

"Here's the deal, if you want the statue back all you have to do is reach out and grab it, that is if your feline paws and do so." he suggested, knowing that they couldn't, and if the cat wasn't really a cat, they would have to reveal themselves in order to do it. "If you can do that I wont stop you and Ill let you go free, you have my word as a warrior."

He wasn’t — he wasn’t stress-grooming. The situation wasn’t so dire that he would resort to that as a comfort. A cage, he could handle. A cage of stone, he could still handle. It was just the matter of whether he ought to let yet another person know of his identity. Fawn had merely been because he’d had no other desirable choice, but he had a fair few here, he liked to think. And he wasn’t too keen on a complete stranger knowing what he looked like in his bornday suit.

The drag of a scratchy tongue over his forearm was simply to complete the ruse. That was it. And he was growing bored of this cage, especially seeing as how the Avialae continued to dance between thinking he was just a cat and he was something else. This seemed fairly stressful to the outsider observer, but the outside observer would see a large cat and a winged giant of a man. He gave the bird mage a weary look as he spoke further.

Mino pushed up onto his feet as the cage grew larger. He nosed at the stone bars, tail flicking. Still annoyed with having been caged, but otherwise intrigued by the means it had been done. Most of his cages had been very much man-made, non-magical constructs. Metal bars that tasted harsh and cold on his tongue when he’d been younger and rowdier. He paced the length of it to see the new size — only to be disappointed that it wasn’t much larger. A growl rumbled in his chest as he settled back down.

The bird offered him a deal. He huffed as the words reached him. It was a simple task. If he stretched, he could certainly reach the statue. Maybe with a slight extension of his claws. Two deep puffs of breaths and he turned his head away from the bird again. This was a test — maybe if he could understand the other fully? It would give him away as having sentience of some kind not befitting a creature he’d assumed the form of.

Another puff . He turned his paws up to lick the undersides. The pads of them were still a little sore from the skidding stop he’d come to earlier. He could — he could play stupid. Relatively. He was up again, pacing once more. A yowl, soft at first, left him. Then, another. And handful of them thereafter. Louder each time as he butt his head against the stone bars. He tipped his head back, sniffed the bars facing the statue before closing his mouth around them and teething. It would likely get him nowhere, even if this was meant to potentially up the Avialae off his trail of sentience. After he felt his teeth rattle, he backed up, shook his head. And let loose another yowl, louder than the rest.

☵ Hey! Put that back!

☵ Well things seemed to be taking a turn, and he wasn't sure how to handle this. How could force this thing to show its true form, without harming or killing it. He knew something was off about this thing, but it was playing coy with him, which was starting to piss him off. In any case, he watched as the cat began yowling into the night.

He didn't care all too much, but he knew if he didn't silence the cat it could complicate things. So to give themselves more privacy, Hyoga laced his hands with aether and placed them on the ground. From beneath them the ground began to grow and envelop them in a dome of stone. This way, the cat could make as much noise as it wanted and no one would hear it.

He decided to take his attention to the statue, pouring over the object trying to see what would be so special to it. as his fingers trailed over the form of the statue he found his hand hitting a ridge of sorts. From the looks of it with the right twist and pull, the bottom of the statue gave way and something fell out.

"And what the hell is this?" he pondered picking up the piece of paper. He unraveled the paper to find dates and numbers, but couldn't make any sense of it. What was he looking at exactly? But now things were started to pour over in his head. Was this the reason that thing wanted the statue?

Looking at the noisemaking cat, Hyo's brow raised. It seemed this cat was more of a thief than a mere feline. "Seeing as I cant heads or tails of this I don't see any reason to keep it, so for both our sakes, ill just burn it all instead." he announced, forming flames in his free hand and pointing it at the statue and paper.

This of course was bluff, trying to see if it would spur the thing to show its true form to him.☵
