"It’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person, Lady Mae Eloeth.” A tall, well groomed man stood at the side of a luxurious mahogany dining table. He appeared human, wearing a suit made of fine white and gold satin whose intricate stitching shimmered in the candlelight of the moody establishment known as ‘Johin’. An upscale restaurant with it’s menu decided by the chef changing every night, one only went there for the best Kalzasi had to offer.

Mae had decided to wear a simple black dress. Long sleeved, it contoured her body and ended just above her knee. Her lips, coated in a ruby red lipstick, were held shut tight as she examined she simply stared back at the man. Irritation had already set in long before her arrival, no thanks to her carriage driver who seemed he’d rather spend time picking his nose than her horse's hooves.
But etiquette and society dictated her movements here. And so with a short bow of her head, Mae greeted the man.
“The pleasure is mine, Sir Hans Wilhelm.” She rose with a practiced grace. Hair black as night flowed down her back like the strokes of a paintbrush. Smooth, it fluttered as she took her seat across from the man her parents had set up for her.

They really should get the point by now. She had no intention of marrying, least of all producing an heir. And as a child of seven it was not like her other siblings couldn’t take on that job for her. But they were strict. They wanted at least two children from each of their own, at least one of which should be male, and none of which should have a hint of peasant blood. And so there she sat, across from yet another tiring noble who likely would only speak of politics and her beauty, already pining for the night to be over.

“I must say, I never thought seeing The Rose herself in person would be such a wonderful sight. But the rumors were true, you are as lovely as a midnight blooming white rose. Your reputation precedes you, in the best of ways My Lady.” Hans took his seat as well, the circular table doing well to keep him far enough away from her that at least he couldn’t reach across and kiss her hand like the last one.

“I thank you for your compliment, Hans. To my understanding your family runs a chain of bathhouses. Is this correct?” She asked, silently thanking the hostess who came by with a set of champagne glasses and a warm towel. It wasn’t that she cared. But overtly telling the man she was not interested hadn’t been the best idea, she’d found out the first time. Her parents had been furious, stating how poorly she acted. How, if she truly did not find them a match, that she should at least find reason to before denying them.

And so she would. Find out everything about him and his family that she could, and pick one thing she knew her parents wouldn’t approve of. Every family has their vices, as it were.

Hans smiled as he picked up the champagne glass between two smooth skinned fingers with perfectly polished nails. “That is correct. We plan on expanding to Zaichaer come Ash, in fact. By 130 we plan on having at least ten new locations in five different cities across Ransera. Pretty impressive, no?”

It would have been. If he had done any of the work. But she’d already done her research. The man was a bore. He worked simply with the finances of only one of the bathhouses and truly only held wealth by name alone. While her family was much the same in lineage, she held pride in the fact that she had single handedly turned a lonely building into a bustling center of knowledge, art, and history for the entire city. An accomplishment that she continued to improve on day after day.

“That is quite the accomplishment, yes. But do you plan to take your future spouse with you when you expand? Surely you can’t expect if we were wed that I would travel with you.” She stated simply. Hans just grinned, disgustingly mismatched teeth glinting in the light.

“Oh but of course! I’d make sure you would never work a day more in your life.” Mae stifled a laugh as her lip curled into the tiniest of snarls. But before she could respond with what may have been an ill timed insult, the waitress came to save her.

“I present to each of your dining delights, a roast quail. Twice cooked with a crispy, peppered skin and tender insides that have been injected with a mixture of cranberry, orange, and pomegranate nectars, laid over a bed of frost vegetables and a creamy yogurt sauce. Finished in a rich olive oil, and paired with the peach infused champagne. Enjoy.”

“Thank you, Claire. As always.” Mae gave the woman a hint of a thankful smile and then turned as Claire walked away, coldly once more, to the waste of time in front of her. He had already begun to stuff his face. Classic.

Mae ignored her food for a moment. Instead, content to savor the rich aroma of perfectly prepared food in front of her. It had been quite a while since her last experience at Johin, but it was a favorite that she chose for all her dates. If only so she would enjoy at least one thing that night, make the date worth it so to speak.

She picked up her own utensils and began to slowly cut away at the thigh of the quail. Her head remained high as she brought the first bite to her lips.

“So you-” He nearly choked through the first bite. “-you have come here before?” He asked, mouth full. It seemed his manners ended when he had sat down.

Her brow twitched briefly, but she simply nodded. She had all the information she needed to back out of the arrangement, and now could likely eat her meal in peace. This was where most of her dates caught on. They’d leave early when they realized she was not interested, or they’d finish their meal in peace as well. Hell, most of the time they were doing the same thing she was; ignoring their parents wishes. Though most had their own ladies waiting at home- much to the dismay of their parents.

He cleared his throat as a large piece of quail slid down his throat. “Well, then never again! Not without me of course. I shall wed you, take you here every month, and you won’t have to lift a finger to do so. I’m sure the museum is an absolutely dreadful place to work. All those dusty, dirty relics, I can’t imagine the people that actually handle that stuff! And for what, some useless bit of history? Nearly as grotesque as the people who pay to go in there, am I right?” He laughed with a gusto that echoed throughout the romantic restaurant, catching the irritation of more than just Mae who now stared at him with an obvious furrow to her brows.

She placed her fork down, her knife, and blotted her lips before sighing and standing from the table. She could stand idle chit chat, even a bit of negging. But the insult to her business, the artifacts and relics she had curated, slaved over, nearly lost her life to a few times, was not something she was able to sit quietly for.
“If you had stepped inside my museum, Hans, you’d have come to realize that even one of my relics is worth more than your top three bathhouses combined. Including the one across the street from this very restaurant. And while there may be some lower class people that enter my museum, at least they have the bravery to face the history that allows them the lives they have today. But you? You probably wouldn't know the Sundering from the Sun. I believe I am done here. Which is a pity, I truly wished to enjoy something tonight. But it seems a pitiful bath boy has ruined it.”

Her words were venomous, icey, but her voice did not raise as she spoke and by the time the last word had slipped past her lips, Hans was left gawking at her. Shock turned to rage, and he quickly stood to match her. By then Claire had noticed the commotion and rushed to the pair.

“May I assist you? Has the dinner not been to your liking?” She asked, feigning professional worry. But this was not the first time a date had upset Mae, and certainly would not be the last.

“No, Claire. As always the food is exquisite. However it seems my appetite has been ruined. Place the bill for tonight's experience on me. I don’t think he’ll be doing as well as he expects. After all, Glade is approaching. Your worst season, is it not, Sir Wilhelm?”
She was collected, poised, as still as the mountains in a storm as she turned from the man, twirling a velvet blue cloak around her shoulders and clasping it closed around her collarbones. After paying the hefty five gold pieces for their meal and beverage, she pushed the door open to step out into the frigid night air.

Standing by the entrance, the doorman was shuffling in the cold and looking positively guilty. She raised her brow at him as he waved her over. “Lady Eloeth, I am so sorry. But your driver, he told me that your horse had begun coughing and so he went home early to tend to it.. ”

Before she could answer, the disgustingly rude man she’d left upstairs came staggering out of the doorway. He grabbed her arm, red faced, and gritting his teeth as his fingers squeezed into her flesh as if ready to pop her like a grape.
“You think yourself better than me?! I am the only son of the Wilhelm family! What are you, just one of seven? A spec to be discarded if you fail? You think I haven’t heard of your family's inner disputes, we all have! I can spread word that your museum is failing, bring it to the ground! And you would have nothing!”

She wanted to kick him. To scream. To bruise his throat with her fingers. Her arm ached in his rough touch. But her fathers words, the expectations of her family, all echoed in her mind. And she was not in her museum, not around her guards who could easily protect her from the backlash of rumor or a hand.

“Go on. Break it.” She glared at him but her voice was quiet, and she did not move nor flinch as she challenged him, jaw clenched. “See where it gets you.”

Pah wandered down the street. The evening was beginning to settle on the northern city. On this particular day his shift with the guard extended into the evening. Pah personally preferred to do his work from the air but while you could see a bigger area you could miss things small things. Especially as it was now dark. The white winged Avialae had his wings wrapped around him like a cloak but was pulled back to show off the uniform for anyone who needed his help.

His route would take him through some of the richer sections of town, which when he first started, he thought would be an easier route, but the young man had been sadly disappointed. The crimes were different here. While he could deal with the pick pockets who frequented the area, they were the smaller types of crime to be found. It was true that there wasn’t so much random disturbances so there was a lot more patrolling and less handling issues.

One this particular day Pah had found himself making a few sweeps through the side streets. Mainly to add some diversity to route. He didn’t actually make an arrests, but his ice blue eyes were amused as a few shadows slipped away as he walked down the paths. In his wandering he eventually found himself self walking down a side street next to one of the city bath houses. Pahoran hadn’t ever actually check this side street before so he was in for a surprise. Down this path were a few ladies who appeared to be waiting form someone. As soon as Pah turned the corner the woman stopped relaxing and were suddenly paying full attention to the handsome young man.

They moved as it to approach him, but stopped when they noticed the sky guard uniform. They slipped back to there spots and Pah looked around and raised an eyebrow before walking up to one of the ladies of the night. “Isn’t this an odd place for you to be umm working.” He asked.

“Do you know what that location is?” She asked. Pah honestly wasn’t sure how anyone could really find these women desirable. He was sure that they were nice looking, but he couldn’t take them seriously with all of that make up. The man was concerned with how malnourished they looked.

“A Bathhouse.” He said aware of the locations on his route.

She slipped up towards him and put a hand on his chest. “Sometimes patrons are in the mood for some company.” She smiled at him with a teasing smile. “I would be willing to show you.” Pah’s ice blue eyes looked into the woman’s eyes. His were filled with sympathy, but also a very clearly no answer.

“No Thank you.” He said and stepped away. He walked out of the alley and moved to the edge of the street and looked around feeling a bit annoyed at the people who allowed this type of behavior. As the situation would occur Pah’s ears hear someone shouting from the other side of the street. His cold gaze settled upon a well dressed young man marching towards a woman shouting at her. Pah was already moving across the street as the man grabbed the woman’s wrist and began his triad about how he was the only son of some minor lord.

Pah jogged across the street, and imposing figure as he moved through the night. His wings were behind him now flowing back to creature the least amount of wing friction. The white of his feathers seeming to glow in the nighttime lights. His imposing seven feet and his long steps scattering people out of his path. Pah was by this point close enough to here her challenge for him to do it.

The young man had any number of options, but his sword at the pompous lord’s throat wasn’t the best approach, but lout was so confident that he left another opening. Pah grabbed the boy’s other arm and pinned it behind his back pulling it up as much as it would go with out actually ripping his arm out of the socket. In a calm civilized voice Pah spoke.

“If you break her arm, you will share her fate.” The young man said, his voice loud enough for both to hear, but clam enough to convey his seriousness. Pah got a chance to look woman in questions. Based on both her appearance and upon what he said, she was clearly a Lady as well. Pah bowed his head respectfully to her. “My Lady.” He said his voice almost conversational with her. Then his conversation turned to his own captive as they were at an almost impasse. “I would recommend letting go. Clearly you have had to much to drink. Lets get you a ride home.” His voice strongly hinted that the man had better be drunk. He would continue increasing pressure until the man dropped the woman’s hand.

“I will have you know that I am the only son of…..” The arrogant man began.

“The Wilhelm family.” Pah finished for him in the same calm voice. “Yes I heard your rather boastful introductions a minute ago. Though with how often your parents missed I wouldn’t be bragging.” He paused before saying. “I am Pahoran, and my parents were successful with six. I also am a Sky Guard so unless the Wilhelm family wants to have to explain how their son was arrested for braking the arm of a lady I suggest you let go, and we get you a ride home.”

Mae continued to stare down the man with her ice cold gaze. And much like the icey stare sent shivers down the mans spine, actual frost began to form around the girls cheekbones. Like spiderwebs it spread from her face in intricate patterns and left swirls of frost curling around a beauty mark. From the edges of her face it spread down her back, through her limbs and into her fingers. He could feel the ice beneath his hand as she chilled from the inside out, becoming a living, breathing icicle in his grasp. She took a step closer to him.

"You do not possess the testicular fortitude to do anything but bitch." She said, her words striking his ego like a knife. The breath that passed her lips was a cold fog and brushed against his face.

It was so startling a vision that Hans didn't even see the Avialae approaching and all too quickly found his own arm pulled behind his back. Not that it mattered as he struggled. He wasn't built by any means, instead he was built by the luck of genetics with a lean, almost skinny feature to his structure. So each struggle he made against the much taller Avialae was as laughable as an ant trying to escape a boot.

"I will have you know that I am the only son of-"
And yet he was cut off by the man once again. His hair had fallen over his brow, dishevald, as he gritted his teeth and let go of the woman in front of him.

"I wasn't even hurting her.." He mumbled, brow furrowed. "And I do not need a ride home from you!" He spat, spitting on the ground beside the woman. "But fine, off I go, lady. Just know you've rejected the best Kalzasi has to offer. Now unhand me and I shall be on my way!" He was sneering to her with a straightened back, as if it would help him look any better in the grasp of one of Kalzasi's finest protectors.

When he was finally let go, Mae was found staring at the Sky Guard in front of her. Her eyes scanned his form before rising to meet his gaze. She narrowed her eyes briefly before bowing towards him. "Thank you, Sir Pahoran. I appreciate the Sky Guards devoted services." As she spoke the frost began to uncover her body and reveal the delicate form underneath. Her hair that had frozen to blue darkened to it's usually black, soft wefts and the ice around her fingers melted off her elegantly painted nails. In mere moments, it appeared as though she were any normal person. Aside from a tad of blue that stayed in her eyes.

"Well? Off you go." She tutted, flicking her gaze off behind her as if to motion for the man to leave. He scoffed at her, huffing as he adjusted his jacket and stormed off without more than mutterings of 'unfairness' under his breath. When he was finally out of sight, Mae brought two fingers up to her brow and pressed the space between them. "They act like anger will actually get them what they want. Pathetic."

Pahoran watched the two other individual involved in this gathering. The young man controlled his expression as he watched the woman, he was helping become frosted over. He wasn’t scared just surprised. His main focus though was on the squirming lord being held in his hand. The guard made sure that he held the man firmly put not so that there would be bruising. Most of the power in this grip was the position of the arm, and the fact the man had no training and missed that squirming always made it more painful.

The man turned rather pathetic at that point. He wasn’t even hurting her. The young man resisted the urge to just snort at that comment then and there. While it might be true that he hadn’t brought a whip out of punched her, the young man had heard what was being said. The verbal aim was an attempt for the heart. Pah wasn’t sure, since he didn’t know the lady in questions, how well aimed it was, but he could tell it was what would have been a slap to the pansy he was now letting go.

Pah stepped back with his wings flung up so they almost created an alcove over the over his head. The main point was it have his already tall stature the appearance of more stature. Pah titled his head with an amused smile as the braggart said that she had just rejected the best of the city. The young man had meet and seen his fair share of nobles and certainly common persons, and he would be willing to say he knew any number of people better qualified to be a husband.

Pah smiled and bowed towards the young woman as thanked him. “It is my honor.” Little did she really understand the truth of that statement. While he was a Sky Guard and it was his job, but as a Knight of the Dawnmartyer it really was his honor to perform such acts. His gaze followed the man as scamper away with as much dignity as was possible. The young didn’t trust cowards like that. He turned his face back to the young woman. The frost that had covered her was receding and he could see that she was a very beautiful young woman. There was more then just her beauty though. She had an air that he knew well. It was the air of someone who had a goal in life and was heading towards it.

Pah smiled at the woman’s comment. “That’s because they haven’t ever had their life endangered.” He commented with a smile. “They don’t understand value of self control. Anger can be useful motivator, but not if it drives your actions.” His ice blue eyes showed his amusement at the other man. Up close the obvious Avialea traits gave way for the traits of a Hytori half blood, including in the color of his hair, and eyes.

His gaze fully settled upon the woman next to him who appeared to be dealing with a headache. “I am glad I could help. Is there anything else I can help with. Would you like a escort home?” He asked and glanced in the direction of the Lordling. “I don’t trust people like him.” He paused and gave a sheepish smile. “I am sorry, I forgot my manners. I didn’t catch your name?”
