The Essence of Uneasiness

Korvaelis Dahshida

Korvaelis sometimes wished he could say more to the kid. Being the youngest of four, the druskai had little to no encounters with anyone younger than himself until the evening he walked down the aisle and said ‘I do’ to one of the eldest sons of the Dahshida mainline. Aki stood across from him, hiding behind his father and no matter how many times he tried to reassure the child with a smile the young Avialae just wouldn’t let up. Sometimes, it feels like things just haven’t changed. Legs crossed as he sat atop a rugged rock, the dowager koiteki found himself spying on Aki as he practiced his bow and arrow skills.

The boy had trembling hands as he placed the bow against the string and cocked it as far as the string could allow it to go. There was hardly anything to aim at on the rocky road that led to their home except a few trees that looked almost like large twigs with tufts atop them. Korvaelis had no hope that his child would make the shot, but he still held his breath with anticipation. Aki was not the best shot, but no kid can wield a weapon like him. That much the young man knew for sure. Although his hands were shaking, Aki’s eyes were focusing on the trunk of the tree--if you could call it that. Korvaelis watched as he finally let go of the arrow, eagerly waiting for the few seconds that would go by and let him know whether or not he hit his target. The arrow spun in the air then hit one of the tufts, cutting right through it and bouncing off the rocky mountain.

Korvaelis slumped over a bit. He knew Aki was disappointed; he didn’t have to see his furrowed brows and pouty lips to know that he was extremely upset with himself. Korvaelis continued to sit quietly for a moment. Then he remembered that this could be a parenting moment for himself--he was new to this whole ‘daddy’ role, but it would not hurt to try from time to time. Sliding off the rock, he placed his bare feet on the ground. Whenever it was just him and the kid, Korvaelis felt no need to wear fine clothing or even shoes at times. They were home after all and he’d rather be comfortable than an unapproachable, pompous noble. Kalaui, the large red guard dog that had been laying at his side, got up swiftly and before he could even take off she pressed herself to his side like a giant cat he swore she was always meant to be sometimes.

The noble and his companion glided across the rocky floor until they were only a few feet behind the avialae child. Korvaelis hesitated at first to say anything, he didn’t know exactly what to say to Aki as he did not want to upset him. He knew he would be in a fragile state of mind. He remembers Akiba telling him how his son had such a big ego for such a little guy. Aki wants to be good at everything and when he fails, he feels that he has failed at everything.

“Hey,” Korvaelis spoke softly, placing a hand on the boy’s shoulder. The greeting was met with a shrug, Aki eventually pulling away and spinning around to look at him. He still wore a hurt expression that soon hardened at the look of the water humanoid’s face.

“What do you want,” Aki answered bitterly with a sigh to show his irritation.

“I--”Korvaelis hesitated, slightly nervous to tell him anything, “I just want to say...you did a great job. You did your best. I saw you do your best and it was great.” A sheepish smile was offered, it looked like it hurt. The smile was a great representation of how he felt too. Every moment he shared with him was agonizing since he never knew exactly what to say. Korvaelis felt like his entire existence in Aki’s life caused him more pain than anything else.

“You don’t even know what a good shot looks like. You aren’t Synnekar, you don’t know our culture.” The kid’s voice deepened and he even let out a laugh. “I don’t understand how you became my guardian. The Daizoku is more than capable of taking care of me.” Aki narrowed his eyes. Unexpectedly, he would drop his bow and let the sling with his arrows fall off his shoulder too. “The old man can teach me so much more than what you have to offer. You’re nothing more than a gold digger that took advantage of my father.”

Speechless, Korvaelis just stood there. There was nothing he could say. None of what was said is true, however, there was no rebuttal to it. The reason he had joined the family could be aligned with that of someone who was only looking for a few extra dranar farthings in their pocket. That wasn’t his exact intention, but he did not marry the Dahshida family for love either.

“That’s what I thought.” The little boy rolled his eyes before stretching his wings. He crouched a bit before jumping into the air and taking off into the midday sky.

Panicking, the Koiteki began chasing after him, running farther and farther away from his home until the winged child disappeared over the mountains. Having no access to wings of his own, he could do nothing more than stand and look at the fading sky.

“Shit.”

Pahoran found himself once again out on patrol. The young would have been surprised if he had been anywhere else. He personally supported when a organization of guards expected there guards to go on patrol. On this particular day Pah found himself a bit farther out in his patrols this particular trial and also found himself on a horse.

The young guard suspected that while they needed this area patrolled he was sent on this particular assignment as a sense of humor. Pah didn’t actually own a horse, so he was given one of the guards horse. Pah new that there were horse tall enough for the Avialae heights, this one was decently tall, but he suspect that he looked a bit funny looking.

Pah didn’t particular care, let them laugh, he would do his assignment and just prove himself the better guard for it. He also hoped that eventually he wouldn’t be a focus of humor as he didn’t really provide ammunition for the jokes. More then that Pah knew who he was and what he was capable of.

Pah kept an eye out for anything dangerous or anyone in need. Being on the horse made him a bit board though. So as he rode he spent a chance to do some practicing. He allowed himself his sight to open up to Aether. He just studied it watching as flex flowed around him, or just stood still and the flow of the aether of himself and the horse as they moved along. Pah then pulled some his own aether and seeing a rock ahead of him, its flex stationary against the ground. Pah then infused the flex with his aether to get it to raise. He used his newly awaken kinetics to lift the object.

Pah could tell there was some difference then the pull ability. Here he used the ground’s flex as the counter instead of himself. The rock moved off the ground being lifted. Pah held it for a moment, and then pulling a bit more aether out of himself and infused the rocks flex and this time using himself he pushed the rock away. Pah watch the rock fly away. He felt a slight smile spread on his lips.

It was then that he heard the sound of a couple shouts in the distance. He pulled his focus away from his practicing and to the hear and now. He nudge the horse so that it moved into a trout and he guided the horse towards the shouts. As he came closer he watched a young Avialea youth take flight and another man try to chase after him. Which given the lack of wings on the second young man wasn’t having a lot of success.

Pah slowed his trotting mount up by the other man. His handsome face with it golden blond hair and ice blue eyes showed concern and he asked. “Is everything okay? Anything I can help with?”

Korvaelis Dahshida

This had to be the third outburst this week. Aki seemed to create a problem with Korvaelis as much as he could, showing his tail (or wings) every chance that he could get at in a day. But he has never gone this far, he’s never done so much as to run away--fly away from him. Maybe Korvaelis has gone too far, that’s what he told himself, he’s just crowded the child a little too much and he should’ve stayed out of such a delicate situation. The half-druskai knew how much being a proper Avialae meant to Aki, it was a delicate subject to the boy. The child did not speak to him too often, but Korvaelis knew he worried about not being the brawny man most Avialae lived up to here in Kalzasi. Especially the Dahshida men, the hunters, and fighters of the city. He recalls Akiba telling him how their family is the protector of their realm, no matter what Korvaelis has heard about the other great houses he knew that the Dahshida is what protected the borders of their city.

They were the hunters, the guards and they would forever set the standards for the Synnekar behavior, that is Akiba’s definition of their house name. He can only imagine what Akiba had told Aki-Shu, the young boy who had probably felt pressured before, and the fact that he did not have many strong figures in his life most likely set him off. That’s what he told himself. Feeling insecure, Korvaelis began to wish that Akiba didn’t leave him with such a big responsibility. Not because he disliked the idea of being a parent, but the idea of raising a child in Kalzasi’s high society proved to be a failure from time to time. He wondered...was Akiba thinking of his son and estate when he put him in charge of it? Or was he thinking of something else Korvaelis couldn’t exactly put his finger on? Regardless, it did not feel right. Not now.

He placed a hand over his brow, squinting to see if he could catch a glimpse of something in the sky. Anything. What could he do if he did though? It’s not like he could pick up wings and fly after the child anyway. Most likely, he would have to wait until he decided to come home. There were other options, however, he did not want to bring too much attention to his household though so they were out of the question for now.

The deep tone of voice was an unfamiliar one yet there was a clear sign that it was worried. Korvaelis had his back toward this person, so when he heard the voice he could not help but to hesitate. It was unfamiliar which made his skin crawl at the thought of having to communicate with someone he didn’t know. After only seconds of thinking about what to do, he twirled around to look at this person. If he wasn’t in such a predicament, the druskai would have most likely blushed and covered his face. He was blushing anyway as he looked over the handsome Avialae--he just did not cover his face or turn around. Luckily, the reason his face had turned such a white color wasn’t so obvious since his face looked so confused. The Avialae was a great representation of his race, however, that had nothing to do with the fact that he was so close to his home.

“Wha-what are you doing here?”He asked after the man asked a question of his own. Korvaelis did not mean for the question to sound so impolite. However, the estate was a little off from the main roads and it isn’t common for people to just stumble across it. “Yes, no….yes! No.” He answered a bit unsure on whether or not he should tell this man of his problems before sighing heavily. “No, everything is a disaster. I suck at this.” Korvaelis murmured before covering his face.

“I do not understand...this is all so difficult.”

Pahoran was surprised and bit confused by the the young man’s reaction. The sky guard watched the young man’s face as it became a range of expressions. He was clearly surprised by Pahoran’s presences. Which given the clop clip clop of the horse he was riding clearly indicated that the Druskai wasn’t paying attention to what was around him.

Pah smiled kindly. His ice blue eyes strangle warm as he spoke to the flabbergasted young man. “I am a sky guard and assign to run a patrol through this area. I was close by when I saw the young Avialae take flight.”

Then came the very indecisive yes, no yes, no. Pah found it charming and amusing. This poor young man was clearly struggling. The knight couldn’t say what the details where but this young man clearly was in need of help. He listened to the rest of the explanation and Pah tired to put some clues together. He guessed the young man was in charge of the boy who had just flown away. Pah would have guess some type of tutor but that seemed odd since Avialae would usually pick someone more dominant to teach. The youth of the race could be fairly bull headed.

“I am sorry Sir. I am a little uniformed of the situation but from what I read the boy I saw flying away wasn’t supposed to fly away.” Pah stretched out his hand and said “Since you don’t have wings let’s catch up with him on horse back.”

He was again giving that friendly smile. This was part of why he had joined the Sky guards and it was certainly why he was a Dawnmatryr. He liked to help people. “We can also work in answering your other questions on the way.”

If the handsome youth did take his hand he would pull him up and make sure he was tightly sitting in front of him before putting the horse into a trough. Behind would be easier on anyone else but an Avialae. The wings would be in the passengers face and make the ride weird for everyone. So Pah put one hand around the other man’s waste and holding reign in the other hand would follow after the boy and listen to the only slightly older companion if he cared to talk.
