It was far too lively for the late hour. Lyra thought as she walked through the bustling streets of the Commons. It was past dark, but the number of bodies only seemed to increase with the waning light. There was a thrill in the air, and excitement coming from close to the center square where a large pyre had been built and cast both warmth and orange light around the gathered bodies.

Smells of food being baked, the sizzle of meat, and the cry of wares was matched by equal parts laughter and talks by adults and children alike. Was there some celebration? Lyra had not heard of one save for that which was hosted by House Lekivian. Somehow Lyra doubted that this was related.

Someone bumped into her back as Lyra was walking, and the bundle of supplies she carried was nearly dropped. Annoyed Lyra sent a glare to the person, but they were already gone. With a sigh she pulled her supplies tighter to her test and tried to make her way through the shifting crowd until she reached a clearing with a bench. There she sat, setting the parcel beside her with a shake of her head. Around her people were moving, and now that she paused she thought she could hear the sound of music a bit further into the crowd.

There was likely another way to reach her shop, but it would likely require a long and roundabout detour which Lyra did not desire to pursue. Sighing lightly in frustration she produced a small book from within the parcel she carried, its title is written in flowing script. The light of lamps and the large fire at the center were enough by which to see, and crossing her legs Lyra prepared herself to wait out the majority of the festivities.

Pahoran found himself in one of those funny positions. His shift was over, but he had been informed of a local dance in the commons, some type of celebration, nothing really the city cared about other then there was music dancing and food. Then he has been asked if he had wanted to attend and that he could stay in uniform. Just to encourage people to behave. Pah had asked if he was allowed to actually participate and they had agreed that he could, but to keep his drinking to only one tankard. Which proved again how very little some of his commanders knew the young man. While he would take a tankard ever now and then he didn’t do more then one. Losing control was just not something he found enjoyable.

The young Avialea didn’t object to it at all. So it was that he made his way toward the commons away from the fortress which was also his home. The youth realized he was on almost on an officially approved night on the town. He wound his way through the crowds and soon came upon outskirts of the party. Standing taller then much of the crowd he was able to see a bit more of the gathering. His ice blue eyes seemed to reflect the torch light as he looked around.

It was then that he noticed a young woman carrying something and trying to navigate the crowd. Pah felt some sympathy for the young woman. This crowd would be very annoying to trying to work through. So the small giant waded his way through the crowd, his sky guard uniform only offered him a bid of relief from the crowd as he came closer to where the woman had found relief on a bench. As he moved through the crowd he discovered it was the people behind him who were the worse. With his wings in the way the missed the uniform. Pah patiently just moved along. Though at one point when someone loudly said something about him getting out of there way by flying. The young man turned and looked at him and just threw back his head and laughed. Like anyone could take off with this many people around. Well Pah could actually do that, but a number of people would get smack or have to dive for cover.

Pah was grinning at everyone’s general annoyance when he broke through to the seat the young woman had found. The young man, with his interesting mixture of races approached her and said politely. “I am sorry for interrupting but I noticed you were having some trouble getting through. Is there any way that I can help.” He looked out at the crowd. “This crowd can be rather aggressive.” He turned back and smiled at the woman.

The pages were slightly rough, think stock, and the ink wasn't chipped or faded in the slightest. Each turn of the page felt pleasant on her fingertips, and she smiled ever so slightly. Reading was a pleasure that she rarely was able to indulge in, in her past life. Often reading meant preparing for some arcane activity, studying some fools manuscripts, or was a product of her own work and ambitions. Later when she became Lyrielle reading was simply not something she did, not something she could do. Now Lyra found a certain pleasure in the activity of freeing the mind, letting letters drift from the page to form a world in which only you and the characters in the book existed.

She glanced up as Pahoran approached, his shadow announcing him long before his words were uttered over the din of music and laughter. Lyra stared at him for a few long seconds before looking back down at her book, using a finger to trace the lines to find the place where she had left off.

"Your offer is kind, but I believe I am well enough as I am." Her voice wasn't quite cold, but rather dismissive as she turned another page. It wasn't that she disliked men such as this, but resolute as she was in her decision Lyra did not wish to go against her past and forage the path of a greater struggle. After all, her book would keep her company, and Naila was uncharacteristically quiet.

His shadow still lay over her, and he was another of the monstrously tall sort that seemed so ever-present in Lyra's life of late. When had it become so commonplace to be of such ridiculous height? It was a mutation, a deviation if ever Lyra had seen one. Still, complaining aside, the boy's smile was nice, and Naila agreed emphatically.

"I will be off once the festivities have ended." Lyra said without glancing up, "Worry you not for my sake, go and enjoy the night like everyone else."

Pahoran looked at the woman how had politely and slightly coldly turned down his offer to help. The young man wasn’t offended, as he though she looked like she needed help. He found her attitude interesting and a bit amusing actually. There was something stately about the way she spoke that he had really heard in everyday conversation. His ice blue eyes looked at her with interest.

Pah loved to read and took the chance when ever he could but he wouldn’t have been able to read in a situation like this. He found it fascinating that she seemed to enjoy her book why not bothered by the sounds of the revelry around them. He also found it interesting as she appeared human but the general statement that she just wait for the part to end sounded more like something his Hytori grandmother would say.

He titled his head and spoke loud enough to be heard but no so loud it was a shouting contest. “What are you reading about?” He didn’t add that was worth not participating in the festivities. “It must be interesting.” Pah looked around seeing the craziness settling around them. The young man realized that he was being a pit inquisitive but the woman was kind of intriguing to him, and he would never pass up the chance to find another good read. Though it would depending on the subject matter. Pah enjoyed a good story, or poetry but he tended to struggle through science manuals.

His expression was open and curious as he watched her. Also as he looked around he realized unless he wanted to go with the crowd he would have to push his way through, and even if he did plan to go with the crowd he wasn’t go in that mob, even if he didn’t get squashed he might hurt someone with his larger size.

Lyra once more glanced up from the page, the finger of one hand curling to hold her spot as she studied the giant of a man. Through the symphonies, she could hear his genuine curiosity, and she felt her hint of annoyance fade ever so slightly. As the crowds pressed closer Lyra shook her head and shifted slightly on the bench, reluctantly motioning to the place beside her. The child seemed intent on conversing.

"Fe'lal et mishaimen a'tu." Lyra said, turning the book so that the golden script on the cover could be seen, "It can be read as 'Follies of Lovlies', an odd title to be sure." Opening to her page once more Lyra read a few lines and smiled slightly, "It is written in an odd dialect of the old tongue, a bit crass and unrefined for my typical tastes, but it seems that this is what is popular now."

Naila sent out a thought that made Lyra pause and frown, "I am told this is known as... romance?" That wasn't the word Naila had used, but Lyra would not speak so to a child such as this. Shrugging Lyra's eyes began to scan the page once more, "It is an interesting tale of a man who saves a woman sent to kill him. I admit I am curious as to what he shall do with her now that she is bound in his storehouse."

Her words were genuine, curiosity laced with slight confusion, and meanwhile, the mercenary nearly rolled with repressed laughter somewhere within their soul space.
