A Confused Little Butterfly2 Searing 121
Kalzasi was an awe inspiring place for a boy who'd only ever seen great cities at a distance. Clann na Feithidí Uisce had roamed great distances during Destyn's brief life to date, but they'd consciously veered away from areas more populated by fauna than flora. Always staying close to waterways, the clan of Destyn's birth had preferred the soothing sounds of nature to the din of a bustling marketplace. The recent orphan had always been fascinated by cities and loved to perch atop the tallest tree he could above a woodland canopy, to stare into the distance at the skylines of the North's great cities when they were close enough to see. He'd always found them beautiful in an exotic way. He'd been to villages, trading posts, roadside inns and other smaller settlements, but he was well aware that they were nothing like cities. One need only look at them to see that. And Kalzasi was one of the strangest sights of all. If only he might have made his first visit to the Jewel of the Northlands under better circumstances.
Such as it was, Destyn had arrived under the spectre of his life's greatest tragedy. Fortune, or perhaps some benevolent spirit, had led him from the site of the massacre to the Kalzasern airship hovering propitiously above the smoking glade. He remembered little of the journey from the South, but he knew that a puissant prince had intervened on his behalf to protect him from the agents of foul Industry that had claimed the lives of his kith and kin. He'd been taken into the hold and his wounds had been stabilised, but he didn't remember much else. Just that he hadn't been the only patient resting in that improvised infirmary.
Upon arriving in Kalzasi proper, he was immediately conducted to The Tranquil Gardens hospital, where surgery could be performed on his shattered leg and he could be screened for other conditions. Apart from a few cuts and bruises, no other physical damage was found. The vast majority of the trauma was emotional. Any sane person who'd endured what Destyn had would be a wreck, and he was no different. He'd been held for observation and assessed by counselors, who ultimately determined that he posed no immediate risk to himself, but that he should be placed under the care of a patron and monitored for a month or so.
Destyn's saviour prince had visited him toward the end of his hospital stay and made arrangements to set him up with an influential patron house, which would serve as his caretakers until he was back on his feet- Literally, as he left the Tranquil Gardens with a crutch under one arm. As he limped out under the bright, Searing sun, Destyn was greeted by a tall, dark-haired man whom he belatedly recognised as the other afflicted party who'd shared his room on the airship from the South.
"Hail." He rasped wearily. Though he recognised the large man's face, he didn't know his name and didn't really expect to be remembered anyway.
"I'm told you were sent by the, um..." He paused, trying to recall the foreign term through the haze of painkillers and weltschmerz, "Shinsei is it? They said I'm to be lodged at the estate of a House L... Lekivian?"

Not much could be remembered from the time he spent in their leave from Zaichaer, and though the wolf had only gathered scrambled bits and pieces, he was well aware of the situation he had been given at hand. Ever since their return his period spent healing created genuine restlessness, therefore, Talon had in mind the kind of task that Rickter had to be suited for.
While the grasp of his magic still felt slippery at times, he had grown considerably better over the past week. Therefore, Rickter dressed into his Sky Raiment attire, the tail of his black coat gently flapping within the breeze as he stood patiently for his charge. First scent to cross his nose was that of elderflower, with fresh hint of morning dew even, and perhaps even pine as the bronze skinned man walked out of the Tranquil Gardens. The locks of his hair highlighted by the sun as innocent eyes of the sky fell upon the form of the wolf, as he stood with arms tucked at the small of his back in waiting.
Rickter had not had the pleasure of making this Fae's acquaintanceship before, due to being under sedation during the rest of their venture back home. Although he did not look directly into those blue eyes, Rickter did acknowledge the arrival with a gentle nod toward his charge. He was to provide an escort service, only in a literal sense, for the poor man as he'd been through a trifle within Zaichaer. The wolf wondered if he pitied or sincerely empathized, having understood the dire situation he'd been in just days before their departure.
"Hail." He returned quietly in Common with a minor aversion to his eyes, noting the rasp in the Fae's voice when he first greeted the Rathari. Then came the question regarding the one who had sent him, which had indeed been the Shinsei, as the black wolf quickly acknowledged that with a slight nod. "Aye, my lord Novalys has sent me." He had also been provided with instruction on where to guide the Fae, and who to meet with once they had arrived as well. It would be a simple trip toward the Promenade, but first the Rathari reached for the waterskin dangling from his waist. After undoing the leather strap he then extended it out, offering the container to Destyn as he gave the man a simple look.
"Call me Rickter. I'll lead you to House Lekivian, if you would?" He gave a general nod in the direction that they were to head off to, after he had allowed the Fae time to decide on whether or not he needed a drink.
"Every side attacks you when you don't pick sides."

House Lekivian was receiving a guest.
Mino had not been surprised with this revelation; they had guests all the time. It was merely the fact that there had been a royal prompting for the guest. Which meant the house itself was in a flurry to cover certain tracks. The last thing they needed was someone strolling in and learning family secrets. That was no fun. They had to have some sort of mystery. Mino rubbed his temple with one hand, fanned himself with another. He really shouldn’t be doing too much at the moment, overheating for more reasons than the season. Juniper’s very handy concoction hadn’t yet kicked in and everything was making him irritable.
Directions for interior design were abysmal, and thinking about a budget arrangement for the guest was another nuisance he would need to deal with when he met them personally. As well as his escort. He didn’t think he needed to compensate the man for his work of escorting their guest. He hoped they didn’t have to.
He sniffed as a vase was repositioned for the fifth time, a painting shifted over. The rathari didn’t know much about keeping a home, and theirs was a large one to keep. The Lady Merlot had seen to most of it already, leaving small touches for him to suffer over with the permission of Lady Blue. He squeezed his eyes shut, leaned back against the table. Their guest would be here soon enough and he would need to be there to greet them. He pressed his knuckles to his temples, hoping the external pressure would somehow cancel out the internal pressures building in his head.
Too many scents. He recognized them all, but mashed together as they were — he was suffering. The hint of flowers, the perfume of the ladies. The scent of food wafting from the kitchen. He opened his eyes, sniffed again out of habit before stretching out. He ought to focus. Not worry too much about the fact that there would be new scents adding to the chaotic mix his nose was picking up.
A knock, stealing his attention. “They’ve arrived.” Daffodil’s brows rose at the sight of him before she walked off to find her Lady. He wouldn’t question what that was about.
His walk was brisk, face set in a less than pleased expression until he crossed the threshold. Then, a grin broke out over his face, the poke of too sharp canines peeking out as he descended the steps. Hair pushed out of his face, green eyes landed on their guests as he approached the gates. Bowing deeply, he righted himself. His grin remained.
“Welcome, honored guest.”

The haunted eyes of the Fae languidly lowered to regard the water skin proffered by the tall Rathari. The height difference might not have seemed so stark had Destyn been standing up straight, but hunched as he was over his crutch, the contrast was quite apparent.
"Oh..." He accepted the waterskin a bit trepidatiously, and took a wary taste with just the tip of his tongue, unsure what to expect from the contents. Upon realising it was nothing more than fresh water, he tipped it back and gulped down several long chugs. He hadn't recognised the extent of his thirst, until his tongue was graced with water. After downing about half the contents of the vessel, he handed it back with a nod.
"Thank you." The 'th' sound favoured the hard consonant of the T, rather than the unvoiced sound that native speakers of Common casually employed. Even with as little as he'd spoken thus far, it would be evident to a keen ear that Common was not his mothertongue.
"And I am called Destyn." He replied to the introduction, "Yes, please." He would follow along quietly as the one called Rickter led the way through the overstimulating environs of Kalzasi. He'd come to the hospital heavily sedated on a stretcher, and so he hadn't really processed through the streets of the great city prior to this moment. He remembered the airship and the hospital room and little that lay between the two.
He was struck by the sights, sounds and smells, but he couldn't properly appreciate them, as he might have before tragedy struck. Now it all felt oppressive and overwhelming- Dangerous, like the thunder of bullets that heralded the end of Destyn's clan and his future as he'd planned it.
With so many stimuli assailing his senses, it seemed like no time at all had passed before they drew up to a stately home and Rickter knocked. It wasn't until they were waiting at the door that Destyn even thought to wonder what he might expect from the people who would house him. He supposed they might be great winged Avialae, like his saviour, or similarly statuesque Rathari like this Rickter fellow who'd conducted him from the hospital. What he did not expect was someone smaller than himself. So far the people of Kalzasi seemed larger than life, though admittedly he'd been laying on his back for most of his stay, which did tend to made a body look taller.
All at once he realised he'd been standing dumbstruck for an impolitic amount of time. He shook out of being frozen stock still and contrived a weary but earnest smile.
"Thank you. You are kind to host me." He lifted his head, trying to peak over the shoulder of the youth who'd answered the door to see inside.
"I am, um..." He peered beyond Mino, "My name is Destynrael of Clann na Feithidí Uisce. Or just Destyn is also fine."

The bodyguard watched with content in his eyes when the Fae accepted the drink, Rickter having been asked to carry it on him to remain hydrated. Not that he had the problem usually, he had learned of his natural affinity to the element a while ago. Regardless the wolf did as his caretakers instructed and, surprisingly, it turned out to be in handy for him in another sort of way. Thus Rickter had to pull a rolled parchment that he brought up to his lips, his fingers and thumb rubbed together roughly a few times as he needed focus. Though out of his system by now, the Abjinurium still made reconnecting to Aether a challenge, the wolf having the need to put thought behind what once felt like muscle memory.
Sure enough, a tiny spark of embers sizzled into existence, the miniature flame only alive long enough to blaze the tip of the joint before it burned out. Puffing on the burning parchment a couple times, he accepted the waterskin back without turning a gaze. Smoke plumed outward from his nostrils when he exhaled with a strap of the waterskin back to his belt, a pair of fingers brought up to pinch the tip from his lip. A firm as he could be Rickter gave the man a gentle nod in response to the appreciation, having understood that the Fae before him suffered his own harsh losses. An entire family torn from him... The wolf couldn't even imagine the harsh reality, even if he knew a pain measurable by circumstance. When he'd been given responses back from the weary Fae, Rickter nodded accordingly to the man before he began their stroll.
The Promenade was thankfully straightforward to reach in regards to the route they had to take, Rickter having to make an effort to half the pace he'd normally maintain along the way. He didn't mind going at a pace that was comfortable for the Fae, the man needing his time to process the world around him as it were now. Part of the wolf wondered what the man beheld around him as of now, while the rest hoped he would find comfort in settling into Kalzasi. Given time Destyn could hopefully see it as home too, but the part that led him to linger on that made him wonder how. After they had reached their turn and pressed forward, their pass into Adira's Promenade from the Commons became a noticeable quick apparent.
More houses began to flood the commons and, before too long, larger houses were lined along the street they walked. If Rickter hadn't seemed mindful before, he certainly couldn't avoid a subtle glance past his shoulder. He needn't to see long as he could tell just by looking, the rigidness in Destyn as he kept moving to reach their destination. The wolf couldn't blame him either... and still, he struggled to considerably to find the right words. And their time was soon to be cut short soon anyhow, as the Lekivian House banner came in line of sight just moments after his gaze shifted. He pondered at how to show Destyn that here, he was protected and that here he wouldn't need to be so guarded here. At least, not while under the wolf's own protection. And right there brought a reminder, one that led Rickter to wonder as they reached the front yard of the estate.
Finally, they had reached their destination and awaiting them, much to Rickter's lack of surprise, was none other than the host he'd seen last time during the Cotillion. He remembered just from the smell alone once the man opened the door, the layered aromas of perfume over a sunbaked animal within Searing times. He knew this cat's name, even remembered that he was a cat, but the wolf's memory lapsed as to what that name was when his eyes fell upon Mino. Destyn finally spoke as he showed appreciation toward his new host, admittedly a bit more stricken with curiosity now that they were at the door. Thus, Rickter's eyes averted as he began to turn aside, having already done the task he had been charged with. Yet the guardian in him still called out to be heard.
"Destyn," He called as gentle as his gruff voice would allow toward the Fae, "apologies for the delay. Before I part from your company, I would like you to know that you have the protection of Novalys at your disposal." In confirming this the wolf bowed his head respectfully forward, "Should you ever have need of me, then simply whistle as loud as you can. If I'm within the vicinity to hear it, then you can count on my arrival." He practically pledged knowing the extent of his capabilities as a wolf, only hopeful that if such times ever did came, then that pledge would in fact mean something to Destyn when the time came.
With a lift of his blue eyes though he looked from the Fae to the Rathari, the gaze somewhat direct into Mino's eyes as he gave the man a courteous nod. "I leave him under your care, sir." And with that the wolf watched as the two of them entered the building, his back turned toward the door as they swung to a close behind him. With a lift of his fingers to take the final drag off his joint, the wolf flicked the burnt parchment down on the cobblestone, crushing the dying cherry with his boot as he proceeded to leave the premises.
"Common" "Synskrit"
"Rickter"

Mino, very much to his credit, resisted the urge to cover his nose. Instead, it was a pointed sniffle as his gaze shifted over to Rickter. He was familiar with htis one; nothing entirely unpleasant, but the first moment of their meeting had been in...less than favorable circumstances. He’d remembered that scent. Lake water and dog. Not a combination he particularly liked, but one he wasn’t entirely disapproving of. Usually. Today — in this moment — he wasn’t so happy to have it stinking up his front gate. That urge to kick dirt in his direction, to hiss at the intrusion went against the very simple instructions of showing hospitality toward the pair that had arrived.
“Mino Lekivian, at your service.” Well, not completely. He tossed in a wink for good measure, for charm.
He forced his focus to shift toward Destyn. The other peered over his shoulder at the house behind the rathari and well. He could not fault him for being curious. From his understanding, the other had never been around these parts and hadn’t had much time to explore anywhere outside of the Four Winds. Mino had only ever been in the more...public-facing areas and the branch where Fawn had stayed to recover, but not much else had been seen beyond that. His curiosity, though, was outweighed now by the lingering scent of the palace on the stranger. He could only offer up a wider smile as he took one step back — and up — to block the sight of the doors.
“Hold on, I cannot have you spoiling the tour for yourself, can I?”
Though, as he gestured for the other to follow him a chuckle, the wolf had something else to say. It would not irk him to know that Destyn had further protection from the royal family — for the best, really — but the implication that Rickter could be called whenever…that wasn’t something they would like much of around here. It would only mean that they needed to ensure Destyn didn’t feel the need for the other rathari while on the premises. There was no telling what he could pick up.
“Just be careful of some of the strays that may take your whistling for play.” A harmless jab; he’d made it easy. What was Mino supposed to do about that? Not use the opportunity given? “Some of them can be...overzealous in their play.”
Mino turned away, a bit of a bounce to his step. Rickter scent would fade away soon enough; he was sure of that. Or, he’d come back and make sure it did. Regardless, he took comfort in coming into a space that smell much more like him the further up the steps they went. Even if he happened to share it with some interesting people.
“This is the House of Colors, which you will understand why in a moment. My mother — Lady Blue — will not be able to meet with you at the moment, but I was tasked with giving you a show of the place.” He lifted a shoulder in a half shrug, turning on his heels to face the other as he skipped backward a few steps. “And I think I’m much better company for a tour like this.” An abbreviated tour, of course. He couldn’t go showing off all their secrets.
As they entered the halls, children scurried off to the side, waiting for them to pass before they resumed what would look like playing at chores. Well-versed in the charade that they were learning through play. “Hope you don’t mind the sound of screaming children in the mornings. They get started early.”

A tensely furrowed brow answered Rickter's kindly pledge.
"Thank you, Rickter..." His delicate voice with its unusual accent lilted through the air between them, "But you should be aware that I can whistle very, very loudly." The statement was delivered with great gravitas for such an innocuous sentiment. It sounded like a dire warning, which given the actual thought being expressed, might have seemed like a jest if it weren't coming from a creature recently crushed by such crippling loss as to be perpetually sullen.
He lifted a hand to wave to the tall man as he stalked off, and then turned back toward his new host- tilting his head curiously, in a wide-eyed gesture that might have put one in mind of a mantis or some sort of timid bird.
"Mino Lekivian." He repeated with a nod. It was not heavy on his tongue as some foreign names were, but neither did it sound like Fae nomenclature enough to feel familiar.
He blinked at the playful chastisement he earned for peeking at the halls beyond his host.
"Oh, sorry." He lowered his head in a bashful bow and allowed Mino to take the lead. Along with the scent of the palace, Destyn's own aroma might have been mistaken for some sort of piney perfume at first. In truth, he didn't amend the inherent bouquet of his floral features which were not visible in the clothes he currently donned.
"Ah! Strays?" He wasn't particularly familiar with the term. The distinction of feralness didn't really rate much attention for woodland wanderers like Destyn's erstwhile clan. Whatever the case, he could gather from Mino's tone that there was more to the term 'play' than he might have thought otherwise. Another warning.
His crutch clicked along the floor as he hobbled behind his Lekivian host.
"I... do not rest easily these days to be honest." He didn't relish the idea of screaming children, as the last time he'd heard such was in the midst of massacre, but if there was laughter peppered amidst the din he supposed he might be able to divorce the sound from the sentiment.
"It is good, I think, that this is a home to children. Perhaps I might someday help to mind them?" He offered with a faint, forced smile. "I do not wish to be a burden. I will be of service, if I can."
