None but the Goblin King himself knows how it works, though it is believed to be an ancient, possibly a unique magic to the Goblin King. However, it has spawned into a tradition that nearly all but the most out of touch Goblins will know. Anytime a Goblin is hoping for good fortune or is hoping to stave off some more bad luck, they will pay tribute to the Goblin King. This is done by casting away a single coin, usually a copper, sometimes a silver, and extremely rarely the higher coins. The coin should be thrown far from the Goblin wishing to pay tribute to the Goblin King. If the coin disappears from sight of the throwing Goblin, it is considered accepted by the Goblin King, and thought to bring good luck, or at the very least, permission granted by the Goblin King.

Whether or not the good luck is granted is not ever truly known, one thing is true. The coins that get accepted as tribute spirit themselves away and add themselves to the Goblin King's horde. The Goblin King knows the name of the goblin that has paid the tribute and always knows exactly how much was paid forth. While very few Goblins know how this actually works, nearly all know of the superstition, and many do believe it to be true. Several sayings tend to come with it, such as "With good fortune to myself, may good fortune come to the King."

This is one of the many means that the Goblin King maintains and expands his wealth, influence, and power.
