7th Searing, 121 Steel
As the training salles at the Onneifer Airfield barracks were closed for maintenance, the airmen had been given leave to train at Fort Cathevelle until they were open again. Though it wasn't far, many of his fellow airmen took that as a sign that they ought to take a vacation from training, Angevin held himself to a strict regimen. Thus, he was one of the few airmen at the Fort that day. Some soldiers only trained when it was required of them, but not this one. Perhaps it was because he found it so difficult to put on much in the way of muscle, he fought for every ounce of it he could. More often than not, when he saw violence, it was from a distance and down the barrel of his gun. But when an enemy got close enough he had to draw his sword, it meant that things were quite serious and so his late line of defense had to be prepared.
His saber was standard issue for a man of his rank. He had only been a Commander for a week now, but he felt he had enough of a handle on the weight of his new sword that he had strapped weights to it in order to make the exercise count. He went through a drill of forms at half-pace just to remind his muscles of what he wanted from them, and then he switched hands and tried it on the other side. While not ambidextrous, he didn't want to be entirely useless if his sword arm was injured and he had to defend himself all the same. Mages and other monsters wouldn't go easy on him if he was injured; they would go in for the kill.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a pair of officers quit one of the private rooms and he made his way over to see if he couldn't snag it for himself for a little while, at least.

Most days started with drills, if not his own, then those he ran his own men through. Myles Yawned loudly, today his men where using their leave hours to make up for a late shift they'd pulled. Myles for his part was less lenient with himself banking his own time for more major leaves when he could get them. He missed camping, he didn't think he'd been on a trip since joining the military. Musing too himself Myles made for the training grounds from the barracks on instinct even without his usual unit. He hadn't noticed how used he'd gotten to the sound of Jonah hot on his heels most of the time.
His swordsmanship was, in his own eyes, acceptable, but only that. In a phalanx or regimented combat situation his skills were enough, but he'd found himself lacking in the department of fighting singular stronger foes. More and more often he was having to fight those who rose above the rank of simple soldier, and it seemed that those who stood above always seemed to have unique tricks up their sleeves. With thoughts like these often torturing him Myles was endeavoring to develop his own tricks and style that would bring him to the caliber of his newer peers. It wasn't enough to be a leader, he felt he had to have the strength to back his rank and authority.
Disturbed from his revelry by the presence of a familiar face Myles contemplative frown split into a smile as he identified the airman Eitan. Quickening his stride to catch up with him before he entered the training room. “Angevin! Shadow boxing this morning?” He said winking, half teasing the other soldier, It wasn't often you saw people train in a private room solo. Myles pondered if it had to do with the man's more arcane talents. Eyeing the saber the man carried Myles pondered if the man was as at ease with a blade as he was his gun. “If you've the space for a partner it'd be a privilege to catch up, and to see how you airmen fight again."

Eitan was startled to hear his name called out at the Fort. He knew some Defense Corps folks, but not many and not well. But he turned toward the familiar voice, then smiled when he was able to put a face and a name to the voice.
"Arnnett," he said, and laughed. "Still alive I see. Excellent."
He glanced over his shoulder at the door, then back. Dredging up a self-deprecating smile, he shrugged.
"I've done all my drills out here in public. I thought I'd attempt some of the things that are beyond me where nobody can see and snigger, but you're welcome to join me. I shouldn't take a whole room just for myself." The Angevins had a great deal; he had been raised not to take more than he needed, as Zaichaer's strength rested in the good fortune of all its citizens. He didn't really speak to that as he knew it sounded like something anyone well to do might say to seem humble.
It was always better to express a virtue in action than to express one's admiration of it in theory.
"We try not to let anyone get close enough to taste our steel, but one ought to be ready for anything."
That said, he opened the door and held it for the other man.
"After you, sir." In fact, this was a stroke of luck. Not knowing many people in the Defense Corps, this would be an opportunity to spar with someone new. That was always a learning experience. And he knew Myles Arnnett to be a survivor whose service had been rewarded with promotion. It was likely he could learn a thing or two from him and, hopefully, reciprocate. Some soldiers felt a real rivalry between the different armed forces. To Eitan's mind, healthy competition was healthy, but in the end, they were united in defending the High City from threats foreign and domestic and ought to care more about cooperation than competition.

“Still alive I see” Myles winced slightly at the words but smiled none the less. He still had some difficulty with the memories of the whole debacle he was sorting. That said the airman's tone and demeanor were well meaning allowing Myles to genuinely return the gesture.
“Thanks to you and yours Angevin”
Allowing himself to be let in as he listened to the soldier talk in a dignified and deprecating manner, he walked the fine line between healthy pride and deceptive humility. Already seeing that the man was someone he would find easy to converse with Myles strode over to the weapon rack in the back eyeing the few practice weapons available. Picking up a heavier one handed blade, a falchion Myles hefted it experimentally appreciating the shorter but heavier blade than the standard issue saber.
“I am by no means a master of the blade but I hope I might make a worthy sparring foe if you are desiring of one, I'd also be content to go through some forms and chat if you so desire, it is good to stretch after all”
Myles was still somewhat held back by the wounds he'd earned when the two had first met but he hoped that he'd be able to keep up with the airmen as fresh as he was from anything strenuous. “How have you been since we last met, I believe I see a new stripe on that uniform of yours.” Giving the heavy blade a few experimental swings Myles savored the feel of the blade meant for chopping medium and light armors with its sheer crushing force. It was, the mace of swords in a lot of ways. With all that being well and good Myles could already feel his forearm straining with the effort his saber did not incur. “By the way, if I hadn't already given you my full name, It's Myles James Arnnett, But I'd prefer you call me Myles when it's just the two of us if that is too your liking ser Angevin.” Adding the ser at the end with a wink Myles pondered how much the man was holding back about his knowledge of the blade.

"If only we had arrived sooner," he murmured, but he didn't let the touch of regret ruin his mood.
While perusing the weapons rack, he elected a cutlass, which was another blade he was allowed to wear with his uniform and one he thought perhaps better suited for his body and the way it moved. He knew enough not to stab himself with a blade, but he was hardly a blade master. It was still a skill to be honed. Glancing at the falchion Myles had selected, he nodded to himself. It ought to be an interesting match, though he assumed the ground pounder would be more skilled than him, having more occasion to wield a blade in the field.
"I would be honored to spar with you and to chat in between," he averred. "Being here on your turf, I find that I don't know enough men in your Corps and that is a shame. A bit of healthy rivalry is healthy, but we all do defend the same city-state. Perhaps we can become friends." He didn't beat around the bush as many of his social class did. Here among his military brethren, he was allowed to be more honest, and he appreciated that.
"They did indeed see fit to promote me for some reason. I'm the XO of the Noble Gambit now, under Captain Merovech." With a good-natured smirk, he bowed as if they were at a court function rather than a barracks brawling room. "Eitan Schande Angevin. I will call you Myles if you will call me Eitan." He called most military folks by their surnames out of habit, which he had begun back in the military academy, but he did appreciate the gesture on Myles' part. He wondered if he ought to introduce him to Brenner, who had some mysterious project he was working on. It had seemed as though he was going to need help, and everything he knew about Myles was that he was dependable and loyal, which were good traits to have.
"I don't suppose you'll be attending the upcoming gala?"
He circled the salle, getting a feel for the practice blade's balance.
