Searing 70th, 121. The Greater Institute, Zaichaer

Jane flipped through one of the books she had recently found, Beasts of the Skies, idly admiring the aerodynamic diagrams of various winged animals. She had not yet taken to reading the text, but she was familiar with its concepts and knew that it contained information that Stefan would find pertinent. It was somewhat surprising for her that the Dornkirk heir had such a fascination with the natural sciences. Being an airship engineer she would have assumed that his attention would have stayed with machines, though it was not unreasonable that he would be curious about biology. Different scientific fields often overlapped, creating a synchronous exchange of theories and applications that never failed to amaze her.

The library at the Greater Institute was very accommodating for its students, providing secluded alcoves within the library that were conducive to research. They usually contained a table with a couple chairs and modest decor, simulating a miniature study. Jane had reserved the use of one such area, the threshold above it labeled with a brass number. She hoped that Stefan would not have trouble finding it and considered sitting out in the open so he might see her, but decided that he was familiar enough with the library that it wouldn't be an issue. How often had they must have passed each other here without a thought, she reflected, and how strange that a seemingly frivolous Gala would have been what introduced the other to their interests. She smiled to herself, organizing her notes from this semester and retrieving writing materials from her purse.

A small, glass vial found it's way into her hands and Jane furrowed her brow, initially puzzled. Pulling it out she realized that it was a souvenir from her most recent lab: the extracted eye of a squealmouse. She gave a short laugh, reflecting on the absurdity of a Lady absentmindedly keeping a dissected rodent eye in her purse. It turned within the clear preservation fluid, a white, shimmering nerve trailing from the back of the pearlescent optic disk that hid behind a pure black sclera. Fascinating how something so strange could hide within a seemingly mundane creature, but that was the affect that Aether had on the world. The breadth of its influence was become ever clearer as she continued her studies it felt like she always had more questions than answers. It was a vexing predicament, but one she knew she could overcome with the proper research and discernment. Jane set the vial aside and opened where she had left off in The Purities of Aether, reading to occupy her mind as she eagerly awaited Lord Dornkirk's arrival.

Stefan was, admittedly, a little late. He had gotten caught up in his own at the Windworks and because this meeting wasn't part of his official schedule his dutiful manservant hadn't been on hand to remind him. It was only a few minutes after the appointed time, he realized, as he checked his pocket watch, he only felt guilty for having let himself get caught up. It was one of his main failings, if not his greatest one.

Luckily, he was familiar enough with the library, having made greater use of it of late than he had at any time since graduating these last few months. Studying for the great work he and Brenner were planning had taken up enough of his time that his father hard began looking at him sternly over the rim of his morning paper at the breakfast table some mornings. Stefan's performance as manager of the Windworks had been flawless, perhaps even too dedicated since he'd taken over the post and both his parents had been puzzling over his lapses of late. No sudden uptake of vices, no gambling, excessive drinking, or any other time-consuming ills had seemed to have cropped up in his life so they were both a bit baffled.

Recently Lady Sylana had caught wind of his meeting, more than once, with Miss Delia Angevin and was behaving rather smugly about it.

Finding the correct study room he pulled up and straightened himself a bit. He was in his working suit, which meant the sleeves were rolled up to the elbows and ink smudged his collar in a spot or two. Dienren had done his best to straighten out his hair and made sure his vest was properly arranged but that was the best he'd have for the afternoon. Entering he smiled at Jane, his anxiety at his appearance melting when he saw her. Not because she was not dressed perfectly respectfully, but because her's were one of the few sets of eyes he didn't feel were judging him.

"Good afternoon," His greeting was formal but there was a quiet warmth to it as he pulled his satchel over his shoulder and set it down on the provided table. "I hope you weren't waiting long. I know your time is valuable."

Sitting he pulled out several volumes of his own, eyes laughing even if his mouth did not when he saw that some of the titles were the same. "I suppose it's good to be on the same page already. Please, tell me what you've come across? I spent most of last night with this," He hefted his copy of The Purities of Aether.

"It's fascinating, but it assumes you already know the works of so many others. I couldn't find even a tenth of the referenced material. It feels like the lectures Herr Wilhelm used to give on the philosophy of science, talking as if we should already know all the old masters. Do you have any of his classes?"
