History: The Zaichaer Air Defense Corps had high hopes for the first ship of this class, the prototype ZADC Excelsior, which was equipped with several experimental elements developed in cooperation with the College of Minders and the Hall of Inventors. Myriad problems led some critics to call the experiment a failure, but those involved took the data to make significant changes, and the prototype Excelsior was subsequently recommissioned for active service. The launch of the ZADC Noble Gambit, built from scratch based on what the researchers had learned with the prototype, opened the door for the Excelsior-class to become one of the most exciting designs in all of Zaichaer's military.

It was commissioned under the captaincy of Fredegar Merovech, who delayed a promotion in order to fly the new airship. He remains captain to this day, though he had expected to be made an admiral by now. Once fully integrated into the fleet, the Excelsior's sister ships were used for a variety of mission profiles, ranging from exploration missions, to patrol duty, to courier and transport runs.

Ash 121 Update: The airship underwent a retrofit at the Dornkirk Windworks. Details classified.
