ANYTHING BUT PLAIN SIGHT
Ash 91, 121

The Pfenning Theater was a theater of tradition, and one such tradition was the Nutcracker ballet that took place in the final days of Ash, to welcome in the Winter season and the cold that followed. From the props, one would think it belonged more in the Winter, and Carina agreed — regardless, her part was not a large one. She was not the best dancer of the ballet, nor even the best dancer in the corps de ballet, but she loved to dance. With half of her season taken up by her trip to Kalzasi, she now had to spend much of her week — and weekends — practicing, both with the rest of the dancers and by herself. She had to keep up, and her time in Zaichaer was almost always spent dancing. Too much time was spent in Kalzasi, and she blamed that for her lack of recent improvement.

She had frequently danced in the Nutcracker, ever since she had been only a student at the academy. The Zaichaeri production had roles for children, and she had auditioned every year she had attended. It was not until she was 13 that she had been granted a small part. It was a fast-paced ballet, with little time for costume changes that were nonetheless necessary, but Carina thrived in the quickness of it all.

The orchestra began, and the heavy velvet curtains brushed across the stage. Carina did not dance in the beginning, but she flitted on and off the stage as the minutes turned to an hour, and then an hour and a half. She did not dance the entire time, only in her reserved little parts, and she was not an exceptional dancer. The Zaichaer Symphony Orchestra played beautifully, and the principal dancers danced as if they were not afflicted by gravity. Intermission came, and went, and then the ballet resumed, and for Carina, it was much of the same, year after year, performance after performance.

After the dance, and the hecticness of it, Carina had changed into something presentable for Zaichaeri society, exhausted and sore and satisfied all at once. She slipped out of the stage doors and into the lobby, mingling for just a few moments. It would be easier to catch a cab back to her apartment if she waited for the general crowd to leave. Some people stood by for autographs from the principal dancers, but no one deigned to bother or notice Carina.

Anton was still tipsy. Far more sober than he had been earlier in the day, but still far from fully in his right mind. In the aftermath, he had no idea why he had permitted Vanessa to drag him on that damnable bar crawl. His head was still swimming, but a cold bath and a change of clothes had done much to at least make him feel better. The deal had been simple - to celebrate the end of Ash and to commemorate a full season together, each would take the other to something they viewed as a suitable outing. Hers, of course, was getting blitzed up and down the Knob.

His was the Pfenning. With the privacy and isolated nature of a box, the theater was one of the few places he was actually permitted to go as a child when his health permitted. It had bothered him how long he had gone without attending one of its performances, the last memories years old.

Settling into his seat in the family box, alone save for his bodyguard, the woman was granted a rare smile as he expanded his senses and took in the old building. And then the performance began. Sense and sensation overwhelmed the mage, the true music of the ballet melding and complementing the Semblance-sight of the dancers flitting across the stage. In his mind, the music was overwhelming, each figure emanating their own theme.

One particularly bright song flew on and off the stage, vanishing almost as soon as Anton could isolate it from the medley. It was not the most elegant or soaring theme, but it had an undercurrent of vibrancy that the others lacked, a sense of purpose and power. As soon as the crowd let out, he immediately set out in search of her, confused at the fact that she was not among the lead dancers.

And then the familiarity that had been niggling at the back of his mind started to make sense.

"Vanessa," he said, somewhat seriously. "Is Clove here?"

Vanessa had always enjoyed the performing arts. Since she couldn't read, seeing things spoken or acted out was the main way she had consumed entertainment throughout her life. Though it must be said that she had often spent those performances down in the cheap seats where the floor was cluttered with peanut shells that were often used against the actors if they failed to impress.

The Pfenning wasn't like those venues, Vanessa could tell that from the first time she passed through the grand entrance. The acoustics were actually good, for one, and the place actually clean. Everyone was dressed well too, including Vanessa. While she still stood out, at least it was because she looked like something resembling a bodyguard. Gone was her long brightly colored reefer jacket, replaced with a dark blue doublet and matching pants. Her sword hung off her waist, though now it looked far more like a fashion statement than the promise it was.

She had recovered from their drunken escapade better than Anton, though still she felt a dull pounding in her head. The music though, against all odds and reason, seemed to soothe that ache rather than exacerbate it to a piercing agony.

She settled into her seat beside Anton, and was taken by the comfort of it. She understood then why the rich wanted a vantage as far away from the action as possible, odd as that had seemed to her before. Vanessa thought she had known the high life, but even now Anton was finding ways to prove that wrong. She sat forward in her chair, looking out as the dancers begun their routine. While it wasn't a globetrotting adventure or a terrible tragedy like Vanessa was accustomed, she smiled all the same.

When the crowd had begun to disperse after the performance, Vanessa began to rise from her seat but was stopped midway by Anton's query. "Eh? Oh, course she is." She knew what that tone in his voice meant, and she continued. "If we're quick, we might be able to catch her in the lobby before she slips out the back. C'mon."

Thankfully Anton's prestigious seats meant it wasn't a crowded walk back to the lobby with Vanessa in front of him to make sure no one crashed into her frail charge. "Oi, 'Clove'." Vanessa raised a hand in greeting from across the lobby before starting over. She had decided to let the record remain uncorrected regarding Carina's name. Hell, for all she knew Vanessa had been given a false identity as well, and wouldn't that have been embarrassing.

An eyebrow raised as she heard someone call her by the name she had only given to Anton on one occasion. She looked behind herself and saw the perpetrators. She stepped forward, quietly, gently, her bag still slung over one shoulder. She had to still move like a dancer, especially after a performance. In a flash she stood before the two of them.

"Vanessa. Anton. A pleasure to see you. You know, you can call me Anna when I'm working. Here. Or Carina, I think, but most in the ballet stick to Anna..." She wasn't expecting either of them, but given that Anton was supposedly very wealthy, she wasn't surprised. "I don't usually have people looking for me after the show." It wasn't self deprecating — she was, after all, corps de ballet, and she had little time to excel into anything else.

"Did you enjoy it?" The question was directed at both of them, but Anton in particular was blind and she couldn't imagine why he'd come for anything but the music. Still, the orchestra was nice. "I had to spend so much extra time practicing. You could not imagine how stressful it is to be behind on the rehearsal... and with a new choreographer, too." It was unlike her to make small talk, but she was a bit nervous about everything, and with being recognized on both sides of her work. She fumbled around in her bag for a moment, pulled out a case and a lighter, and very soon had a lit cigarette in her lips that provided only momentary relief while she let the other two talk. At least some of her anxieties were nicotine-related.

For a moment, Anton assumed that Carina was merely being modest as she explained that she had few post-show admirers, but her aura showed no sign of anything beyond honesty. That, in turn, made him visibly confused. True, she wasn't center stage, for reasons he could not fathom, but surely others saw a trace of what he saw. The dancer's aura outshone and out sung all around her, that must be visible in some fashion to mundane sight, but... it clearly wasn't the case. If it was, she'd be used to people coming to find her.

Curious.

"It was spectacular," Anton assured her, having almost said you to her. He was still supposed to be blind as far as she knew after all, and despite Vanessa's trust in her he wasn't quite ready to reveal to a woman he had only met twice now that he had an illegal rune of magic. While it would not be inaccurate to say that he was struck dumb in Carina's presence, he wasn't that dumb. Yet, at least.

"No, I couldn't, but it sounds positively hellish," he quickly agreed, trying to move the conversation past the fact that as far as she knew he had attended a ballet he literally could not see. He had seen nothing wrong with the technical aspects of her performance, so no matter how behind she was or how new the choreographer, it seemed like everything had gone according to plan. Not that he could just come out and say that.

"Everything went well at the end at least, but I imagine that you aren't keen on sticking around for longer than you have to." The pungent smell of smoke from her freshly lit cigarette was proof enough of that.

"Nobody coming to see you? Their loss, but I guess there's no accounting for taste, eh?" Vanessa said, shaking her head at the very idea. She was used to the sort of cheap shows where mingling with the audience was almost a necessity given the small size of the venue, so the notion of people opting not to chat up the performers was a mystery to her. The upper crust seemed to put a grand amount of effort into enjoying things far less than the dregs, Vanessa thought. At least Anton was different. Lovesick maybe, but different.

" a' course I enjoyed it, Anna." Vanessa replied, slipping easily into using the new name. "Never seen a show like that. A whole damned band was playing the whole time!" She said with near-awe. "And the way you moved, lass. Like nothing I've ever seen." Though her praise spoke more to Vanessa's own neglect of fine arts, it was earnestly given. "But if the director needs a bit of a talking to about time management, you let me know, aye? I'll not have them workin' you to the bone." A grin split her face, but Vanessa spoke the words with just enough gravity to tell that she was serious. For Carina to speak up about the issues, they must have been dire indeed.

After Carina lit her cigarette, Vanessa looked to the door. "You want to get out of here?" She said to both Anton and Carina. "Like you said, none of these stiffs would give you the sort of attention you deserve. Least we can do is celebrate." She then gestured with her thumb back towards the doors. Vanessa was fairly certain Anton would do anything that meant being close to Carina longer, so she didn't anticipate the offer being too hard a sell for him. Carina was a different story, but with any luck she'd be too exhausted to come up with an excuse not to tag along.
