A New Day Dawns
Glade, 122 Steel
The Kingdom of Solunarium has enjoyed ninety-nine years of tenuous peace since the conflict now known as the Bellum Successionum pitted the bulk of the Royal House against the cadet branch of Phædryn, which was supported by most of the nobility. Though the martial prowess of the Golden Guard secured victory for the present sovereign, her decision to execute her primary rival, Alcinaeus of Phaedryn-Sol’Aværys, has proven controversial amongst the Solunarian public, even almost a century after he was hurled into the depths of Mount Sorokyn. Some call her kinslayer for executing her own cousin, while some call her weak for letting his daughter live.
More on this under the “Civil Blood” sub-heading of the History section of The Solunarium Codex
As the Royal Court has already begun preparations for the centennial jubilee of Her Divine Radiance Thalya IV Imperatrix, which is to take place in Ash of this year, those old tensions have been renewed and the Crown is concerned.
Her Serene Highness, Cithæra of Phaedryn-Sol’Aværys, daughter of the traitor Alcineus, has risen the ranks to become Master Sembler and head of House Phaedryn. As the Sovereign prepares to enter her hundredth year on the throne, thoughts of succession are naturally on the minds of the court. There is growing concern that Cithæra will, like her predecessor, shirk the tradition of refusing her own house from the line of succession and renew the conflict that claimed the life of her father. This concern is especially great due to Cithæra’s clandestine expansion of her Silver Sentinels into a far more formidable force than those who vied against the Golden Guard in her father’s day.
Amidst all this tension at the top of the pyramid, life goes on unremarkably for the bulk of the Solunarian population. Trade in Tertium is on the rise, as the diplomatic branch of the Silver Sentinels has embarked on a campaign to expand relations with the world abroad. Laborers work the mines and tend their farms along the banks of the Vasta, merchants man their stores and stalls in the Forum and fisherfolk trawl their nets through the placid river, unwitting to the volcanic eruption that could overturn their lives at a moment’s notice.
Meanwhile, word of an impending conflict between two major city-states to the Northwest has garnered the attention of the Crown and emissaries have been sent abroad to treat with the aggrieved nations and gauge whether it might serve Solunarian interests to take a side in the coming war.
Solunarium Calendar
The weather throughout Glade will be consistently dry during daytime hours with highs of 95 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of 75. After Sundown the temperature will decrease to between 70 and 55 F. All throughout the season, the The Palatium Furiarum will be undergoing preparations for the Centennial Jubilee of the Sovereign. Even though the ceremony will not take place until the season of Ash, it is expected to be the largest official celebration in Solunarium’s living memory (At least for all citizens who are not as long lived as dragons).
The 30th of Glade will mark the Festival of Merchants, which is held in the port city of Tertium far to the Northeast of Solunarium Proper. Many moneyed human elites will travel by barge to attend and avail themselves of the sundry delicacies and libations imported from distant climes by the thriving merchant class, which has lately been bolstered by Solunarium’s recent efforts to make diplomatic inroads with various foreign nations.
On the week of the 50th, Her Divine Radiance the Solar Sovereign will descend from the Palatium Furiarum to appear in public daily to review the troops of the Golden Guard, and award medals for valor in service to the Crown.
