The Obelisk
10th of Glade, Year 122 Steel

It was a symbol of all that was wrong with the world, at least for her people.

Kala had come into the world already bonded to her twin. That bond and those that came before it were gifts from the Crystal Lady to give the Avialae protection from this monstrosity that claimed the allegiance and the souls of their Kathar cousins. She had seen firsthand how lost they were when their collars were damaged. Ser Baudric had floundered, attempting to recover from his battle with a demon as well as aligning his experience of Synnekar Avialae and their civilization with what he had been told by his overseers and masters.

She wished she could free them and lead them home, at least to give them comfort and protection while they decided what they wanted to do with their lives and their bodies.

"Masked Queen," she whispered, "when I find you, please, I want to help them."

Kala sat alone in the Imperial Plaza, on a bench with a clear view of the Obelisk. She didn't approach, though she sorely wished to. Even from here, she could sense the complex runic spells scrivened into its surface. She wondered what Torin Kilvin would see if he could approach it. There might have been runeforged elements involved in its construction and he had an intuitive understanding of magic that she appreciated.

More than she wanted to know how it worked, however, she wanted to know how to break it into infinitesimal pieces and excise the knowledge of how it was created from any mind that still held it.

Her face was impassive, though; merely thoughtful. No passersby would think she looked at the thing except with quiet awe. She could not afford to be seen as deviant from the will of the Imperium.

There was a prickle up Kala's spine, like the feeling one got from being watched, but it was not clear where it came from. Then a hand touched her shoulder, soft and gentle as the words that were spoken barely above a whisper.

"Sister..."

The voice was feminine but as quick as they came, the hand and voice were gone. A feather of gold floated down to rest on the bench. That was all that signified that the moment had not been just imagination.

Kala shivered involuntarily, though her face remained impassive. She had been trained to politics from a young age and could maintain her social mask even now. The voice hadn't been Kaus', nor the presence, nor the touch of a hand. It hadn't been Aquilios either.

No.

A flicker of gold caught in her peripheral vision, and her head turned to watch a golden feather catch a ray of sunlight just so as it danced its stately way down to rest beside her on the bench. Baudric had similar plumage, but it wasn't his either. After a moment, her hand loosed from the other on her lap and reached out for it. She took it up and tucked it into her sleeve.

"I am here," she murmured, though nothing registered to her senses, mundane or magical. After a time, she rose, thinking perhaps she ought to go before arousing any sort of suspicion here in the Imperial Plaza. She could always come back on the morrow.

Dryka found the day a bit odd, as she had it to herself. She didn’t have a practice or an assignment or a show on this particular day. She had time just to do her own thing. Free time among the Geraet wasn’t odd, since everyone needed time off, but Dryka was finding the day kind of boring with nothing to do. So it was that she had decided to go out into the city and people watch. Dryka had donned her mask with its two full face on either side and half mask on the front side. In addition she had also dressed in a grey robe that hide the curves of her current form.

She found herself in the center of the city where the Obelisk stood. The Fae always enjoyed watching people her as it taught much about people. Dryka found the obelisk a symbol of hope. It had brough the winged men under control and stopped their wild destruction. It also showed the order and stability that the Emperor brought to these lands. People were at peace and the Empire brought prosperity to its people. Dryka was one of those who was sacrificed for the stability of others, including her own people.

While in the square the brown eyed Fae noticed a young woman, who was watching the Obelisk in a way different then others. Dryka couldn’t have said weather or not the woman was impressed, or some other emotion. The very lack of emotion showing was what pulled her attention towards the woman. Dryka stood where she was in the square watching as others moved around her. She was a Geraet as proclaimed by her mask, one of those face servants of the Emperor. No one questioned why she was here but it must be important. So with out though they just moved our of her way.

Dryka moved in the direction of the young woman suspecting based on clothing that the woman wasn’t a citizen, or even if she was she wasn’t for the city. This would be a good chance to talk with someone else about the world beyond the city. It was one area as an actor that Dryka felt she lack good information. Obviously people not from the capital would think differently. The masked individual approached as the woman was standing up. Dryka did note the gold feather in her hand but spoke.

“I am sorry for Interrupting you.” She said politely. “I just noticed you studying the city and wondered if you were lost or needed any help?”

Kala didn't realize someone was specifically approaching her until she was standing. The mask wasn't immediately offputting; it reminded her both of the Crystal Lady and the tragic and comic masks often associated with the performing arts. It made her smile a little, and consider whether she would have time to find a rehearsal room to dance in while she was here, or at least take in a show. She wasn't of House Zatrian, but she had been raised to appreciate the arts.

"There was no interruption," she assured them. The person seemed to be making a point of not claiming a gender, so Kala did not assign one. "All roads lead to the Imperial Plaza—isn't that the saying? I know how to get to my hotel from here, but I appreciate the kindness."

While in Kalzasi, Kala's dress was an integration of the tribal customs of her people and the couture of the city. Here, she was dressed more soberly, her clothes well made, but not seeking to draw the eye. Then again, she was young and short, and nobody knew her here so she wouldn't be surprised if someone asked her where her mum was. But this person hadn't been so condescending, at least.

"My name is Kala. I'm visiting on business, but I thought I would take in some of the sights while here."

Dryka watched the shorter woman as she excused the interruption and introduced her self, and briefly explained what she was doing. Dryka blinked at the comment about all roads leading to the Imperial Plaza. “Do they say that?” She said curiously and thought about it for a moment. “Well that is certainly true here in the city.” The woman, Kala, introduced herself and explained that she was in town visiting. Dryka hadn’t ever in her life actually be asked what her name was and like the others never offered it. The Geraet were just the servants of the Emperor, faceless and the people just accepted that. Though if she was working with people, like the other actors and tech people in a production she did inform them of her name. She though felt that this person wasn’t aware of that, and she had observed that people who didn’t introduce themselves were considered rude, and a Geraet was never rude.

“I am Dryka.” She said with a bow. “I know the city well, if you would like a tour guide.” There was a tilt of the head. “I admit to also being curious, I rarely meet people not from the city, and would like to learn more about other places and people.”

With the patients and acceptance of a servant Dryka waited to see what this young woman said. She could accept either response. That was they way she had been trained. She helped others and served the emperor. Playing tour guide for this young woman would help her understand people out side of the city better. Besides there was just a seed of curiosity.

"If you are in earnest, then I would fain turn down such an offer," she declared. "I haven't anything pressing for the rest of the day, though I shan't take up more of your time than you would like." She smiled. "And I suppose it would be only fair to answer your questions in return, although until I arrived here, I couldn't say I was very well traveled." But here she was, halfway across Ailizane in the Imperial capital. Would wonders never cease?

"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Dryka."

Kala made no move to leave, unsure where the helpful person would lead her. They didn't seem like the tour guide type, but then Kala didn't know what the tour guide type would actually look like or sound like, and anyway, many things were upside down in the Gelerian Imperium. Not long before the assassination of the Shokaze, she had been admitting to Stefan Dornkirk that she thought it unfair that only Avialae were allowed in the seats of highest power in Kalzasi, but here, they were slaves, indoctrinated to believe they were fit for nothing else. The realization that this was untrue had shaken Ser Baudric to his core.

She wondered if she would find him here, or if they would make him disappear for the sin of being injured beyond their reach and requiring medical attention from his Synnekar cousins. Alas, she wished he were here.

Dryka smiled at the Kala as she spoke of her agreement to have the Geraet as a tour guide. Dryka brushed a hand dismissively that Kala was imposing upon her and taking up her time. It was part of who the Fae was. She was a servant to the Emperor and even though he didn’t have an assignment for her at this moment she was trained to be useful. “Well even if you have only been between here and your home that still more then I have ever been.” She paused and if her face was Kala would see her face blush but she continued. “In all openness, the Emperor has assigned me to be an actor in his acting company, and my lack of experience and understanding of people outside of the capital is hampering my ability.”

She motioned for them to make there way towards one of the buildings that surrounded the plaza. “Much of the heart of the Empire can be seen from this plaza itself.” Dryka said her voice shifting just a bit to a very factual tone. “This building we are heading towards is the Imperial Academy. Anyone who is anyone in the Empire has spent some time learning there, even if they haven’t don’t have a degree.” Dryka spoke from memory what she had been taught in her lessons, and didn’t really bother to hide that fact. “It’s goal is to spread information, obviously, but allows people to expand there knowledge on any subject that they wish.” There was a hint of envy in the Geraet’s voice. Dryka wasn’t fully aware of how much she would love to learn something just to learn it, not because someone ordered it. She pushed that back down. Her life was a sacrifice for stability and order, it was the least she could do for her people, for all people of the Empire. As the walked to get a closer look Dryka paused to see if Kala had any questions.

Dryka honestly hadn’t really meet any of the Avialae even with them being the Emperor’s guards. Like herself they were the tools of the Emperor. If the Emperor needed her to interact with one she would gladely do it, but honestly she didn’t think about it.

"Ahh, an artist!" she said with real appreciation. But she didn't go too far in that direction as Dryka began to show her around. They were a strange contradiction: wearing a mask that didn't hide the flush of color. Perhaps later she would feel as though asking about the mask weren't impolite, but not quite yet.

"There is a place like the Imperial Academy back home," she said, and it occurred to her that she thought of Kalzasi as home. It wasn't as dear to her as Starfall, perhaps, but other than the occasional visit home, she and her twin had spent the majority of the past year and a half in Kalzasi. That was strange to imagine, though she had always known she would go there at least for a while. Here she didn't even have her ever-present twin, though she could feel their bond even from this far away. She was lonely without him, but she wouldn't let it show.

"I've taken some classes, but my work has made it impossible to pursue a more rigorous course of study. But perhaps you can show me more of the artistic scene as you're an actor. I'm a bit of a dancer, though that is another thing I do in my spare time as my work doesn't allow for an artistic career." She smiled, resigned rather than glum. Her work was important, and she could afford to rent rehearsal space.

It was a whimsical thought, perhaps, but she wondered what she might have studied if she was a lowborn woman with no responsibilities except to herself. She turned the question on her guide instead.

"What would you study if you were given a scholarship to the Academy?"

Dryka turned her masked face towards the woman as she called the Geraet a artist. Her eyes blinked in surprise as she hadn’t ever though of herself as an artist. She was an actor it was true and she wanted to be the best she could be, but she hadn’t ever really thought of herself as an artist. To her that was someone who made statues or paintings. Her brown eyes were thoughtful as she took that comment into consideration. Maybe she would be better if she viewed herself as one of the Emperor’s artists as well as his servant. She modestly said to Kala’s comments, “I don’t know if I have attained that skill, but hopefully one day I will get there.” She then asked. “Do you consider yourself and artist?”

The Fae listened as Kala mentioned that her home also had an academy. Dryka honestly hadn’t though about it, but figured there would have to be such schools. Dryka nodded her head in understanding at the woman’s explanation. She spoke up and said. “I could certainly take you to see some of the more artistic parts of the city.” She smiled briefly as the woman mentioned she like to dance but didn’t do it a lot as she was busy with her work. “I dance a bit but others had more talent at it so they were selected for those callings.” She said. “I did enjoy the little I learned. Would you like to see our theaters or the dance halls?” She asked then.

She listened to the final question about what would she have chosen to study. “I haven’t given it any thoughts. It doesn’t really matter though. The Emperor has determined where best my talents and abilities lay and so I serve as well as I can there.” She looked inquiring at the woman, her face covered as it was hiding the curiosity on her face. Though there was curiosity in her eyes. “I don’t believe you mentioned where your home is.”
