Searing 37, 122 Age of Steel
Somewhere above the eastern border of the Imperium

Life moved with a rhythm of its own aboard ship - be it on the waves or on the clouds. For his part, Anton's day had settled into a simple schedule relatively quickly. Mornings spent chaperoning his younger siblings, afternoons practicing under Vanessa's tutelage, and evenings sequestered with his mother. This last was considered to be particularly dire for some aboard ship, as parent and child could be overheard discussing such dread topics as the tax code and incorporation of charitable foundations.

Without fail however, no matter what had occurred in the day, each night found him leaning out over the taffrail, staring at distant Zaichaer. The rift had been visible when the voyage had first begun, a scar in the sky that could not be ignored no matter how one may wish to ignore it. Distance and time proved the only salves, the wound in the world first reducing to no more than a purple smear among the clouds before vanishing entirely by the second day.

Their course had been jagged at first, a run south to the estate where Anton had first evacuated his family. A tense council had followed that consumed most of the day, before it was agreed that Maria Theresa and her children would head to the Imperium to try and mobilize what of her family's resources could be brought to bear to stabilize the situation. Sigismund's wife and children would remain in the Zaichaeri countryside, along with the bulk of house guards and any rescued from the city who did not wish to abandon the Fatherland.

Moving at first light one day after the Doom, the Every Waking Moment made its first port of call before noon at Haqs. The city was already filled with refugees who had made the trek by one means or another, its skydock and train station both cramped with those who had the fortune to escape Zaichaer by mechanized means. Many who wished to leave Zaichaer behind altogether but refused to quit Karnor and risk their fortunes in the Imperium left then and there, with the rest hanging on only long enough for the airship to arrive at Satesoria.

The City of Stone was less flooded by the desperate due to distance and difficulty, laying as it did on the other side of the mountains, and many considered themselves savvy for picking it as their refuge. At both stops, Anton and his mother left letters for Franz and Sigismund, identical to ones that couriers were already riding north to deliver to the brother generals. It was with some irony that he considered the fact that his father and uncle were far safer for being at war than if they had been in their own homes.

At last however, Karnor itself had to be left behind, and the airship made for open water in the bay between Dalquia and the Ashlands, threading the needle between spend as little time in foreign territory as possible. Skirting the no man's land separating the Dratori homeland and the Imperium, at last the haggard survivors saw it. Their first Gelerian banner. It flew from a minor fort, an outpost to guard against any sudden attack from across the border, but it was proof that they had finally arrived.

For the first time in nearly a week, Anton smiled, the scion already barking out the long expected order to switch the colors. Leaving Zaichaer behind, the Every Waking Moment had, at his insistence, flown the ensign of Zaichaer and the Michaelis family banner. Now, both were run down the topmast, replaced by the glimmering green and gold of Maria Theresa's line as they entered the Motherland.

"We actually made it," Anton breathed out to no one in particular, hoping beyond hope that he and the motley band who had followed him so far west might find peace after losing all they had ever known.

Hector had never imagined a day would come where he'd be fleeing a decimated Zaichaer onboard a pirate’s airship. All things considered, he never imagined he’d be leaving at all without his family, without his coven…but at least he wasn’t alone. A single Mender had been at his side when everything fell apart. This was…all so hard for him to process. All he had was Vergil and two backpacks between them. At least they had their money and a set of Necromancy supplies on hand, plus plenty of fresh plantlife to use as healing supplies.

On top of the sheer volume of destruction the city had endured, the young vampyre himself had three separate surgeries in the past few days. The first was a rush job in an alley to stop all of his blood from leaking out of his circulatory system while the other two were to repair shattered limbs. Needless to say, this entire situation was deeply traumatic in more ways than one. Hector had clung to Vergil as if he’d simply die without the other man.

The first day aboard he’d spent either being operated on or resting and continued to sleep for most of the second. For the third, Hector opted to join Vergil in helping to care for others who were injured. Given his skills as a doctor, the other vampyre was happy to assist anyone who needed it, although he was rather conservative with his use of supplies. Nonetheless, anybody that went under his care was treated to the best of his abilities. The elf wasn’t much use as a surgeon or anything like that so he mostly watched or did simple tasks at the request of his mentor. He was happy to help, to use his skills as an apothecary when necessary, happy to learn and happy for the distraction from his thoughts.

After they’d finished giving assistance to the last of those who had asked, the two slowly made their way above decks. As they did so, they watched as the banners were switched. Neither of them recognized what had replaced Zaichaer’s colors– it looked like a family crest on the banner. Somebody related to an Imperium family ran the ship? Or at least was close with the captain? Interesting. That made sense as to why that was the final destination, then.

The two had chosen not to get off at Haqs or Satesoria. Haqs was overwhelmed with refugees as it was. Satesoria looked better…but they had no ties to it, so why not go all the way to the Imperium? Everything they knew was gone anyways, why not pick the farthest away location? It’d give them the best chance to start completely anew. Plus, they’d heard tales of the Imperium’s remarkable technological advancements and that had an undeniable draw as well.

Vergil looked to the man who’d called the change of banner colors in the first place. He recognized him as the one who’d directed a crew member to guide him to a surgery theatre to fix up Hector and subsequently had been used a few times on others. The two vampyres and this young-looking man had only spoken briefly in passing. The only thing they’d gleaned of him was that he was of noble blood. Easy enough to detect from the way he spoke alone. If the other had knowledge of the Imperium as one with family there would, such information would be useful. Neither Vergil or Hector had really any idea what to expect upon their arrival.

Hector looked to Vergil and Vergil to him.
"You think its worth a shot to ask him anything? We're...woefully ignorant of our destination and he appears amiable enough, no?" Hector spoke softly, almost timid sounding.
"We've not much better to do at the moment; suppose it couldn't hurt." Vergil's response was fairly ambivalent to the idea on the surface but adorned with a light lace of his own curiosity.

Anton would hear footsteps as the two approached, though they weren’t sure to what degree he could perceive them.

“The flags– are those your family’s colors? The captain’s?” Hector inquired with fairly open curiosity embroidered into his voice. “If…if you’ve family in the Imperium, mind telling us what we could come to expect?” He would come across as amiable, though his voice would waver along with his nerves about approaching the borderline stranger.

by Euripides
Perhaps survivor ought to be tacked onto Euri’s name like a sort of badge of honor. It was that she had undergone two events that would have certainly taken her life if not for some measure of diligence on the part of others. A tagging along, of sorts. Though, she’d pulled her weight in the Warrens. Had offered, even, to play the sacrifice but being too slow had saved her. Malnourished, then, with the weight of armor that only held her down, even with it being a few extra trivial ounces on her body. The twang of her guitar sounded as if to split through that dismal thought, Jieun laying against her. She couldn’t feel the weight of the head on her shoulder as she draped herself over an assortment of crates, but she could remember it.

String plucking had kept her complacent, for the most part. Other than the torment, of course, of others aboard as she badgered them for details on their feelings of the tragedy they’d just escaped. Several days of this, and people got used to it. Something she didn’t quite mind; she got used to the Warrens, after all. In some small way. Another glance at Jieun before she pushed herself upright and waltzed over to the withering stalk of a young man she had seen on the first instance of having set foot on the floating vessel.

A considerable difference in height that she did not take without some measure of distaste, she stood beside him and looked to the flags in the distance that had so caught his attention. A squinting, mostly, to distinguish their colors and emblem. The excitement of seeing those flags was — not lost to her, but did not offer the same emotional swell. A curl of her lips because — of course, nobility would like to be with other folks of their own ilk. Kindred souls in wealth and carefree spending. A scoff lost as she glanced up to man.

“So you can smile pretty, sweet prince.” Light-hearted and not all that venomous as she turned with her back to the rail. Nothing worth seeing yet. Leaning back against it, elbows rested on the wood as she peered around Anton to Hector. A face she remembered and forgot in equal measure since having boarded the ship. Important at one point and then so deeply insignificant in the next moment.

Her gaze slid from one to the other. They both were quite passably pretty. One might be more easily ruined than the other. “Expect the sweet prince to play the hospitable host and work those pleading blue eyes of his to greet this family — his most likely; his hands look soft, don’t they? Never did hard work in his life, maybe probably, isn’t that right, Wangja-nim?” Not exactly deep — but her voice had certainly dropped an octave from its usual raspy alto. The tug of a smile that didn’t fit right on her face as she pushed forward to look more at the other man.

“He was generous enough to get us this far, right, Wangja-nim? Sweet prince that he is.”

Before the stranger they'd intentionally approached could open his mouth to answer their query, another stepped up to poke him with questions. A young woman with long, dark hair. Quite pretty, though something about the way she spoke and moved reminder Hector of a snake's elegance. She was intriguing, sure, but she also came across as somebody it would be wise to keep one's distance from.

The vampyres had seen her around– she was either plucking away at the strings of a guitar or bothering people with a continuous stream of very pointed, personal questions. The only reason they had, thus far, missed her would be because Hector had been asleep for the most part. Unfortunately for the fledgling, there was quite a bit of physical trauma he'd needed to heal from on top of everything else. As for Vergil, he'd avoided her…intentionally. Trying to help others with their wounds, she would be not much more than a nuisance to his work.

Hector's gaze shifted from the blond stranger to her, then back, then off into the distant horizon. Did these two know one another prior to Zaichaer’s demise? Or was she merely filling her time?

Perhaps if the circumstances were more…say…normal, Hector would meet her words with his own curiosity. Perhaps he would poke her with questions as she did the others on the ship. However, the fledgling mage was still quite rattled. With subtle movements, his hand slipped back to lace his fingers with Vergil's. All of the words in his head were jumbled, out of order, drowning in the tumult of a mind still half stuck in shock. He couldn't string a proper sentence together at this moment to save his life.

As for the more senior of the vampyres, golden eyes narrowed at the newcomer. In some aspects, the way she spoke towards the 'sweet prince' – evidently a noble of some sort – reminded him of how Hector would prod at people when he wanted to mess with them, to draw out a reaction. If the elf's state of mind wasn't so fragile, this wouldn't be a problem…but right now, an unfortunate combination of words could break the younger man. He really hoped she wouldn't push his buttons.

For now, Vergil stood silent, expression neutral aside from echoes of both concern and curiosity reflected from his eyes. When he felt Hector twine their hands together, he gave the other a soft squeeze, trying to reassure him. He hoped that the little blond noble would say something before the woman actually addressed them directly

Captaining a ship with a sparse mismatched crew of airmen and sailors meant Vanessa was always busy. She slept little, taking naps in shifts to ensure the wheel was rarely left unattended for more than a few hours even when sailing in dead wind. Though it had been some time since she had been forced to keep such dire hours, she readjusted to the schedule almost immediately. She also did much of the mundane work aboard the ship herself, splitting the lion's share with her uncle Arthur. It wasn't that she didn't trust the crew --she could not afford not to trust them--, it was that the crew were still learning to work as a unit, and it fell to the captain to pick up the slack. To say she did so gladly would be to misread her character, but these men and women had gone through enough without Vanessa berating them for failing to secure the sails properly.

She made time for leisure when she could find it, and much of it was spent instructing Anton on how to use both gun and blade at once in combat. While she knew he had skill with firearms and presumed the same for swords, utilizing them both was a skill reserved for purely practical purposes. It was not, she assumed, so easily adapted to noble games in the same way swordcraft and gunslinging had been domesticated. It was good that he learned so quickly, but Vanessa could not help but feel a twinge jealous each time he effortlessly foresaw an attack and delivered a solid blow in return.

After switching the long, trailing flag from the crow's nest to one more suitable to their destination, Vanessa scrambled down the mast like a woman who didn't fear death and returned to the main deck of the Every Waking Moment. The second her boots touched wood, one of the crewmen alerted everyone to her arrival with a swift cry of "Captain on deck!"

She was still wearing House Michaelis's colors, a deep blue frock with gold trim bearing Anton's family crest on the left sleeve. Due to her obvious allegiances, it was little surprise when she spoke up in Anton's defense. "He's been workin' his whole life. Just ain't the type of work you get callouses from." She stepped over to the small group, footsteps heavy. She carried herself with authority, and held a hard stare despite the dark circles ringing her eyes. "Besides, it was him what saved you lot. Show some respect." As his sworn knight, she felt at least some duty to protect Anton's honor as well as looking after his wellbeing.

Then she looked to Hector, surprised to say the least. When she'd last seen him she had expected he wouldn't have made the trip at all, or at the very best would have emerged from the operation with two fewer limbs than he'd begun with. Vanessa herself had restrained many a crew member with a nasty break so that the ship's cutter could hack off the limb cleanly at the next joint. That sort of desperate, pleading screaming was something Vanessa found difficult to forget, so she was glad that he had avoided such a fate this time.

"You look well." She said to Hector, looking him over appraisingly. In her boots, the two were almost the same height. He reminded her of Anton, as well has half a dozen other cabin boys she'd kept on her ship when she'd scoured the skies. A bit delicate looking, but now she knew he was at the very least difficult to break. "However it happened, I'm glad for it." She looked then to Vergil. "You did a saint's work down there on the injured. You've got my thanks."

With the pleasantries out of the way, Vanessa leaned against the taffrail and ran her hand through her hair. "Imperium ain't terrible. Never spent much time there, but all the reasons I hated it are what make it good for some folk. So many damn laws, and laws for who gets to break the law. And if you thought Zaichaer was a damn marvel of industry, you ain't seen the half of it." She thumped the deck with the heel of her boot once. "This ol' girl is Imperial make, and as far as I can figure she'd be up for a serious retrofit by now if she stayed with them her whole life. I heard they don't even need iceboxes, they've got machines that just keep your food cold without any fuss! Don't know if I believe that, though."

She paused then, and scratched her cheek. "Last I was there, the slave trade was still legal. Never partook in it myself, mind. Just somethin' you should prepare to see"

Anton had done his best to stay out of the way of the two vampyres after he had stumbled across them in the ship's surgery, deciding that the less he had to do with them the better. Their auras had always made him uneasy, and knowing the reason why did not make that any better. Still, they had yet to do anything untoward to anyone, and on the contrary had saved several lives, so when they approached him he made no move to leave.

"My mother was born in the Imperium," he explained to Hector, not bothering to keep any secrets from the man. "The youngest daughter of the Lord von Osten, Markgraf of the Eisenwald." Anton spoke the title almost reflexively, enunciating the Kathalan words with the perfect pronunciation of one who had lived his life at court. Which wasn't exactly true, but it was close enough for his experience with the foreign language.

Euripides was a... conflicting figure for the young man. He had no doubt that many considered her a simpleton, a fool, or just plain mad, but that was only something a very incurious person could truly think. Even Anton was uncertain whether she spoke in such a roundabout fashion on purpose, but despite this she delivered insights of brutal honesty. While she was far from the first to deliver such to him, he had a customary gratitude to any who were willing to be forthright with him.

By way of answering Hector's question, Anton therefore decided to follow up on Euripides. "She's right, though," he said to Vanessa, grateful as he was for her defending his honor, the bard really was right. "When we arrive I'll play the role, my younger siblings in tow, to move hearts and purse strings. I won't abandon anyone who's come this far."

Not even the vampyres.
