H I S T O R Y
In the beginning, there was War.
This...was always the case for the Continent. History was a tapestry of conflict, flecked with momentary glances at peace. Our tale is forged by one such era - when mankind sought to dominate the world. The Gelerian Imperium was the envoy of the chaos. Glory and ambition led its armies to crush underfoot any opposition. The sons of the empire were born and fed nothing but stories of grandeur: that war made them heroes. That was could make them Legends. However, these tall tales spoke nothing of the true terrors of War. So it was that three young men sought to scratch their names onto the tapestry of history. Together, they joined the Imperial Army and fought valiantly to push the vision of their liege.
Yet, as the battles waned and the conflict slowed, the years took a hard toll on the trio. Glory was overshadowed by the haunting visions. Fame was smothered by their broken bodies. Their youthful delusions had been peeled away and were replaced by the cold slap of reality. War was not the source of Glory - it was Hell. Thus, when a fleck of peace swept across the Continent, the trio bid farewell to their obligations. They stripped their armor for one last time and donned the visage of mere commoners. But they could not hope to tarry within the borders of the Imperium so easily - for retirement without permission was heresy. Their salvation was the North - to the fabled Free Cities which rivaled the Imperium. Perhaps there they could finally know peace and rest.
After an arduous journey, the trio arrived in Zaichaer. Hoping to not draw undue suspicion to their origins, they offered their services as laborers and took the occasional job as sellswords. They did well to undersell their experience and made a simple living. As fortune would have it, they found their peace. And with it, love. Each was fortunate enough to entice a young woman - and all three were wed on the very same day. They were the closest of friends, nay brothers - and so they would do everything together. From thence, they relocated to the outskirts of Zaichaer and built homes. With homes, eventually came families.
And to Kimaris, eldest of the trio, was born a son: Barbatos.
Kimaris and his wife, Vida, did their absolute best to provide the life they never had. Vida, for one, grew up knowing the struggle of hunger. Kimaris, grew up deluded about the glories of war. Thus, they endeavored to work earnestly so that Barbatos would never hunger. Beyond this, they sought to teach their son the true nature of world, so that he would not grow up with the wool over his eyes. For this reason, though he did have a simple childhood, Barbatos grew up fast. He was taught how to tell if a man was lying, how to survive in their surroundings, and how to offer his skills for coin. By the time he was a teenager, he had begun picking up the sword like his father before him. However, he did not worship combat as a form of glory, but rather regarded it as simply a meal ticket - just as his parents had wanted.
As time moved ever forward, Barbatos grew to be fiercely independent. This was not to say that he did not love or respect his parents - or extended kin for that matter. But rather, he began to enjoy seeing what he could by the work of his own hands. Thus, as he entered adulthood, he would take on jobs all on his lonesome. Most were labor-intensive and made the most of his youth. Yet others, such as the errands for Old Man Gusion, were a touch on the odd side. The Zaichaer native would send Barbatos to fetch deliveries in the city for him...or he'd send him into the mountains hunting down very specific herbs or animals. Barbatos knew well enough not to ask questions, as he was being compensated for each job. Yet, one day, curiosity got the better of him. After dragging a mountain ram with, specifically, lengthy horns back to his house, Barbatos posed the obvious question.
And what was the Old Man's reply? "I was wondering when you'd pry." Barbatos thought then to never ask another question of the elder, but was gifted with laughter...and an introduction. Now, Barbatos - like many his age - was no stranger to magic. It lived adjacent to their lives, like snow atop a mountaintop. Yet this man wielded it in the palm of his hand. This was the first time that Barbatos was star-struck. And beyond this, it was the first time he genuinely wanted something beyond his next meal. Tickled by his desire, Gusion hatched a deal with the young man. He'd teach him a thing or two about magic - but it'd cost him a year's worth of errands. For free. It was a hard bargain, but one that Barbatos wasn't going to pass up.
With the accord struck, Gusion instructed the young man to roll up his sleeve and to bite down on a stick. Gusion explained that what he had to teach was dangerous, would string in the beginning, feel worse than any illness later, but ultimately allow the lessons to occur. Barbatos, ignorant of just how risky what followed was, simply nodded the man along. The blade struck his flesh, a rune was inscribed, and despite the ragged cuts it appeared as a perfect brand. And that was the easy part. Barbatos couldn't remember much of what followed, save for feeling weak. Save for feeling pain. He could...his body losing balance and thudding upon the floor - as if he had been hit by a runaway cart. Occasional glimpses of light where Gusion was shaking his shoulders. Sweat. Pain. More Pain.
But in the end, the darkness broke. Barbatos lived to run errands another day - and so, Gusion kept up his end of the bargain. As the young man toiled away, each day brought a new lesson. They were terribly boring at first - focusing on concentration and warnings about "overstepping". Aether this, and Aether that. Barbatos...retained enough that he didn't outright kill himself when he started trying magic. And as the year drew to a close, he had an infant's understanding of Kinetics. But this was not the end of their dealings together. Over that time, Barbatos had come to respect Gusion as a mentor. In turn, Gusion looked upon the young man as a decent pupil. His first in many years, in fact. Thus, the lessons - and free errands - did not end there.
They continued until the skies above Zaichaer turned black.
On one fateful day, years after Barbatos had first become Gusion's student, an otherworldly storm brewed above the city. The young man was, fortunately, out in the mountains at the time, fetching more scarce plants for the Old Man. But his kin, extended and immediate, had all gone into the city for a well-earned night on the town. What was supposed to be a break from mountainside living turned into a nightmare immediately. Devastation ripped the city apart - and Barbatos was forced to watch from the mountainside. By the time it was "safe" to approach the city, it was safe to assume that very few had made it out. Those who did huddled together and searched for their loved ones. Barbatos made his way into the crowds and called for his parents, called for his uncles and aunts. Called for anyone who knew his name.
There was only silence.
Then, a few brave men decided to venture into the city to see if they could find survivors. Bold, young, and driven stupid by worry, Barbatos volunteered to accompany them. They found...bodies. Both living and seemingly undead. Yet, what ripped Barbatos asunder was when he finally found him. Kimaris, his father, was torn in twain. Torso burnt nearly beyond recognition. Legs missing. Shock still marred his expression. Barbatos had to be pried away from his father's remains and brought back to safety by the party. He had truly lost...everything. Returning home, he found only silence. He waited some days, hoping that maybe his mother would come home. His aunts, uncles...anyone. But no one came. Finally, the door opened, and it was Gusion standing in the frame. He offered only reality to his young pupil and advised that it was time he lived - for all those who had died.
So it was that Barbatos took Gusion's advice and packed what little belongings he could muster.
So it was that Barbatos looked northward to Kalzasi.
