Searing 3, 122nd Year, A.o.S.
Continued from here

After he watched Avamande's ascent up to the first frame of the mainsail, Rickter's eyes gradually averted down to the hold of the main deck. With just a wave of his two digits on each hand, the entrance to the hold groaned from the flex of his aether. With a flick of his Kinetics, the entrance to the storage deck below opened, leaving a gaping hole where the massive trap door lifted and moved from. With a brief bang of wood on deck, the door rested next to the entrance, waiting for the wolf to dive right in once he rested his hands.

By now he was steadily getting accustomed to the rolling of waves when they hit the ship, even so, the idea of going down somewhere dark and unknown unsettled him. He wasn't alone though, well, not at least on the ship. "Just drop down there, find whatever piece of this key is... and come straight back up." He reminded himself as he neared the edge of the entrance, his gaze narrowed as he couldn't see beyond the darkness that awaited him below.

No other way to deal with it then... With the lift of his foot he leaned forward, and shifted to drop within the darkness that awaited below. Air soon rushed passed him, enough to make it feel like he had fallen for a minute, before he generated a lift beneath his feet to cushion the incoming landing. Two loud thunks hit the wood beneath him when he finally felt solid ground, as the dark of the hold steadily lessened on his immediate surroundings.

The interior of the ship's hull sounded odd. The groans induced throughout the bones of the vessel was to be expected, but there was also the sloshing of water as though the hold had taken it in. Though no longer caught by the rain the wolf still felt drenched, his narrowed eyes only widened by a margin as he adjusted to the dark. Still too difficult to see... He hadn't quite fathomed the extent of the spell he used earlier, nor the innate connection it gave him directly to the light. But with Eminence still something he could rely on, the wolf reluctantly raised his left hand without looking away from the darkness before him.

"Luminus." And just like that a spark became a brilliant silver flame, burning out from his palm like a beacon in the pitch black. The room around him seemed big already, lined with shelves that were stocked full of crates and other odds and ends. Looking up he couldn't see the entrance he'd jumped down from, which unnerved him even more since he hadn't any idea just how deep this place went. Then he remembered that this was still a dream, therefore, it was easier to consider that maybe the interior of this ship wasn't going be as close to normal as he would expect.

The aisles before him created a straightforward path that he could walk, but after he passed the fifth or sixth unit of shelves, that was where he discovered an edge waiting for him within the flooring. Another hole from the looks of it, only this time the black of water awaited him below, likely hiding undiscernible depths as well as other unfavorable surprises within. Another knot had already woven itself into the magical bands on his wrists, making that four altogether, when he glanced from water to the wrist of his hand generating the Dawnfire. He could swim, of that he was sure...

He just dreaded what he might find down below. Regardless, with a deep breath Rickter lowered the flame down first, and then dove right in to explore the depths of the ship itself.

----

As Avamande ascended the mast of the ship to climb the mainbrace, the crow's nest looked to be in sight far overhead for a minute. However, as the rain and winds battered the sails around him, it started to look as the sheets of canvas were shredding. Yet they weren't.

All around him within the storm sheets were hoisted onto their braces, generating a literal maze of sails that the Hytori would have to navigate. What's more is the higher he would climb to reach the crow's next, the more prominent there would be flapping within the wind.

As though avian creatures loomed within the winds of the wicked storm around him.

It had seemed so simple. Ascend the crow's nest, retrieve the fragment, return to Rickter. Truly, a trivial task for most, even one without magic. Ropes were meant to be climbed after all, and while the winds were dangerous, they were nothing that a trained mage couldn't handle - let alone as seasoned as they were. In retrospect, Avamande should've known that things would not go as simply as they had first seemed, but the manner in which it fell apart was frankly rather rude.

The vessel itself seemed to taunt Avamande as its sails seemed to multiply, raising and shifting and appearing until there was more canvas flying than in some fleets, let alone enough for one ship. They considered at first simply continuing their manual ascent, but the amount of aether expended by flying straight up would rapidly become ruinous - especially if the ship decided to be cheeky and extend the masts again. No, a more nuanced plan would need to figured out. Flying up to the first yard arm that seemed stout enough to hold their weight, the mage stopped feeding aether into their Kinetics rune, though they did maintain the Negation rain shield that had thus far kept them warm and dry. Comfort was typically underrated by adventurous types, but they had no inclination to be one of those.

Staring up at the next mast ahead of them, they took in a deep breath before taking a running start, jumping off with a practiced leap. They would never make it of course, the distances between the magically extended masts were too much for any but the most fit to manage comfortably, but then again, they weren't planning on making it.

At the apex of their arc, Avamande briefly poured aether into the Cardinal Rune of Traversion, just enough for a vertical Blink. With their momentum conserved, they sailed through the air as they were suddenly above the next arm instead of below, landing on it with a rough gasp. It wasn't the smoothest way to travel, but it was incredibly efficient for their aether, and judging by the flapping of wings above them they would need every bit.

Onward and upward they went, the Hytori disappearing and reappearing from reality every other moment as they jumped from platform to platform. Quick, concentrated bursts of Kinetics brought low the dreadful birds that attempted to intrude upon them as they went about their work, the crow's nest somehow still seeming infinitely far away.

"I shall do my best to return swiftly indeed," they whispered under their breath.

Avamande's ascension throughout the maze of masts remained unchallenged, for the most part, save for the fact he still had quite a number of branches to navigate at this point. One would certainly wonder just how a ship can magically produce this many sails, then again, within the Land of Nod nothing ever remained as it should. Their use of Kinetics and even Traversion allowed them to clear up the two main masts they sought to climb, though as they reached the middle section of the mainbrace, they soon discovered the source of flapping throughout the winds.

Shadows which continued to take flight in the form of birds, massive crow-like birds with bright red eyes glinting at the mage. Never did they stop in their circular flight around the masts of the sails, and nor did they seem inclined to ignore Avamande completely as he made his climb. Some would sweep down into another flight path directly at him, missing him completely when he'd dart from one brace to another. His application of Traversion remained immaculate, enabling him to avoid every shadowy avian that dared to assail him. But for the most part the majority of those birds watched, intently, as the Hytori gradually reached closer and closer toward the Crow's Nest.

And in doing so, he'd then hear something akin to a tune or melody. Rather half of one at least which played a series of low tones, and could be heard faintly until he drew closer toward his destination. It was as he neared the top that a number of crows merged into a shadow blob, an amalgamation that burst like a massive bubble, to reveal a massive shadow crow twice Avamande's own size. The beast screeched aloud wildly as it took to the skies first, its hefty wings beating through the rain before it came barreling back down to the Hytori's position.

It was now or never, whether Avamande went for the key, or faced down the abyssal crow soaring above him.

Diving into the depths below Rickter found that the silver flame did not die out, it did on the other hand, cause the water to sizzle and bubble around his hand once he ventured down. Somehow when he submerged Rickter expected it to be a straight swim to the cargo hold, however, the floor itself seemed to break off at one end, enabling him to travel further and further deep into the ship's bow on his own. This change in dynamic utterly perplexed him, but thankfully, the wolf needn't worry about drowning after an extended period of time submerged.

Still, he mentally cursed his luck in having to tread deeper water, especially when it remained impossibly dark and loose cargo drifted throughout the hold. The wolf pedaled with his free hand and kicked past a barrel, and then a crate immediately after, using the surface of that same crate to even propel him further. I need to hurry, Avamande will be kept waiting if I don't. The problem being was that Rickter hardly knew what he was looking for, yet somehow, the further he treaded those depths the more open the narrow spaces became. How the fuck does a ship have a cargo hold this massive?!

He stopped to ponder for a moment, as the storage and shelving units he swam past seemed further spread apart now. Ahead, something glimmered within the darkness, something that the wolf hoped might be what he was searching for. Oh gods please be it. He just about prayed as he paddled forward, presenting the only light in his hand forward to make sure he'd see anything before him. Within the depths, toward the glimmering orb of light, he could hear faint if not suppressed tones of sound. Something akin to music perhaps but mellowed out by the water itself, and the echoed groans of the ship within.

Yet as Rickter drew closer to the light, something seemed rather off about it, as the orb generating the faint luminescence gently bobbed up and down a few times before remaining inanimate. Strange... He pondered as he moved the flame in his left hand away, curious enough to reach for the light and see what it might do.
