[Closed - Aardwalden]

It had taken a few trips, but Hilana was getting somewhat more comfortable visiting the Umbrium. She still vastly preferred the openness and the sun of the city above, if only because the heat and openness were far more familiar. She had spent all of Searing exploring what areas of the Luxium and Port Vasta a woman like her could go to, though she knew she had plenty more to discover. But down here… A part of her wouldn’t have minded visiting the Thalamum Draconum, because after having seen them in the sky last season, Hilana had become even more enamoured of and enraptured by the majestic beasts, and any opportunity to see them was welcome.

But today, in the lower city she was, away from the blazing heat of the afternoon as Vasilei had sent her on an errand after lunch. In the Umbrium, he had a supplier for all kinds of mosses and fungi, and he had in turn an order of brewed elixirs for the man and his family. Hilana had delivered them, the large, wooden box containing the carefully insulated, individually-wrapped vials having been pulled from her backpack and placed on the counter, where the merchant had waxed canvas bags stuffed full of the mosses, lichens, and mushrooms to go back up topside. After thanking him, she left the cavernous shop and headed out again, turning and starting for the lifts.

Hilana had been intending to go back to work, as she was certainly on the clock, when movement caught the Vasti’s eye. Her head turned sharply, making her curls bounce from where they were tied up with a ribbon as she sought the source of that movement, and as her eyes searched in the lower light of the Umbrium, what she found on the sand of the ground away from the footsteps of the paths more regularly strewn was a relatively straight line, though little, clawed footprints, and her eyes lit up. Maybe what she had just spotted was an Atraxian Dwarf Tegu. The tracks certainly looked like it, and it was perhaps a juvenile. Out of the way of traffic, Hilana crouched beside the track, measuring the width of the line created by the lizard’s tail with one of her fingers. Atraxian Dwarf Tegu for sure. She had seen the larger variety out in the wilds of the Expanse, but the little Dwarf was becoming a more popular pet in the cities, considering how important reptiles were to the culture as a whole.

She got up, and while she was mindful of the throng of bodies, the Vasti was determinedly following the faint line of the tracks. Her gaze darted around to make sure she was not at the risk of running into anything or anyone, but she was lucky enough that the lizard was also trying to avoid the stream of people passing through, and by following the wall, she could stay on its tracks. But her long legs were starting to eat up the distance, though she did have to be careful not to overrun the track. The footprints were small and light, even with the claws, and they were only just barely visible on the sand.

Finally, she could see the lizard, illuminated in the unnatural lights of a rounded building. She eased up on it, making her steps as light as possible before she swooped down, catching it along the abdomen underneath its legs, her fingers closing over it to keep the small, if chunky, black and white lizard from digging those sharp little claws into her fingers. Now that she had it in her hands, Hilana stood still, letting her heart rate come down so that the tegu could in kind calm down when it wasn’t being eaten. Her thumbs stroked along its backs feeling the soft, dry, pebble-like skin of its back. And her eyes roamed what was in front of her, her eyebrows going up as she stared at the signs. The Under-Forge… Elemental Runeforging, Lodestones, and Scrivened Spells. Her head tilted as she peered through the glass.

Magic wasn’t her forte. It never had been. She wasn’t trained in any of it, and most of what she knew about it now was what she had learned in passing since coming to Solunarium and keeping her eyes and ears open. But this was certainly something quite unexpected, and with the lizard starting to calm in her hands as she made quiet, soothing sounds as she held him. Hesitantly, Hilana opened one of the two double doors, slipping inside and looking around. She had never seen anything like it, and her eyes were wide as she looked at the different items and artifacts behind the glass. Even if her hands had not been busy with her freshly-caught little tegu, this was definitely one of those places that she knew better than to touch anything that was contained within. “Wow,” she murmured, stopping in front of a suit of armour, drinking in the details, the materials… this was art. She could appreciate the craftsmanship, even if she knew nothing about a subject.

Aardwalden was out for supplies, a covered basket on his arm that glowered and glittered with magic stones. The markets of the Sanctine were hard to compare to any other the gnome had frequented.

“I’ve never seen a Shard like this one before,” Aardwalden said to the shrewd man at the counter. The stone was unmarked, kept in a warded box as many of the notable ones were. Of course, it couldn’t have been all that impressive. Aardwalden long speculated the markets were plundered of the most notable finds either straight from the miners themselves, or the warehouse, hawked to those of higher castes.

The man who was shining a piece of Terasyte wriggled his moustache down at the gnome. Aardwalden wasn’t an unusual sight anymore, but there was certainly a discussion on what he was when they first met. “For that one, you would need to file a requisitions form,” said the man. “Daemithillium, it has the power to bind and empower spirits.”

“Fascinating,” replied Aardwalden, placing the gem back on the shelf. “Perhaps another day I will file for my research, but I require more standard gemstones this day.” This was merely a run to acquire more Aetherite for a project that had given the gnome and his apprentices pause. Perusing the selection, he made the exchange with the Shardkeeper and made for the door, where two armed magi stood guard. They allowed him to pass, and he descended down stone steps into a quiet cabaret of shifting souls and pining, haunting melodies.

The song faded to a distant murmer as he turned towards his shop, arriving just as he’d seen a woman enter. Eventually she would find the standing board with the pricing for such things as wands, tutelage, and custom orders sitting there upon the desk at the far end.

None of the objects in the show room were magical, but the smithing and detail was foreign. Dwarven-make and decorative, though Aardwalden had long lost access to dwarven steel. Still, he delighted to see her oggling the arrangements as he walked through the front door.

“Ah, have you an interest in the art of Runeforge, my dear - Is that a Tegu?” Aardwalden’s basket shifted as he peered at it with a respectful distance. “There were many Rock Tegu from the lands across the sea I hail from, the Dwarven State Holds.” He gestured a welcome with his hand and bowed pleasantly. “I am Aardwalden the Stoneborn gnome, and the Under-Forge is where I ply my craft. There is a price catalogue there on the desk if you wish to peruse my services.”

The girl had taken an awfully long time perusing everything on display in the hallway, and still had not yet reached the desk when Aardwalden had come back to his shop. Her eyes were huge, and while she was still stroking the chunky, juvenile lizard in her hands, she was mostly still otherwise. She had never seen anything like the displays, even when the Royals were on the move within the city, and she certainly wouldn’t know the difference between Dwarven steel and something magical, but she was admiring it nonetheless. It was clear from the expression on her face that she was fascinated, to the point where she normally would have at least checked to see who or what was coming so she could clear out, that she had only barely noticed until he actually addressed her.

That shook her from her reverie, and she inclined her head to him in greeting as he spoke. Her eyes were already wide enough from absorbing everything on display thus far, and thankfully, they couldn’t pop out at the sight of the gnome. This truly was a day of firsts, because she’d never seen anyone like that in all of her days, in the cities or on the Sands. She didn’t stare at him as she knew that that would have been horribly rude, and she smiled brightly when he mentioned another species of tegu. She almost started questioning him then and there, but she managed to restrain herself as he continued talking, so as not to cut him off. But once he stopped… fair game.

“Are there really more tegus across the sea? How big do they get?” Hilana’s Common lacked the harsh accent of a Vasti who used it rarely, but that was now a pressing question that she wanted to know. “This is a juvenile, an Atraxian Dwarf Tegu… he is what breeders call the Diamond morph, as there no blue on him,” she explained, lowering her captive down a bit so Aardwalden could see him better. “I am certain that he is a boy, he feels like one,” she added, almost off-hand. “They are somewhat popular pets in the cities. You can find them in Ruby, Diamond, and Sapphire morphs here, because once they get older and they have shed their skins for a few years, their colouring tends to resemble those gemstones. Diamond means white and black, Ruby is red and black, and Sapphire is blue and black. They are easier to get used to the hand, too. We have Dune Tegus in the wild here, out in the sands, and they get about this big,” she spread her arms carefully almost full out, and the brightly-coloured Vastian woman had quite the wingspan. “Not so easy to tame. Some have, in the towns along the River,” she seemed thoughtful as she brought her arms back in, tucking the Tegu in once again before the lizard could start thrashing again. “They have a wicked bite, I have seen some that lost their hand or foot to one.”

That did, however, bring her back around to his other queries. “Are all of these displays Runeforged?” She asked him, nodding her head towards the suits of armour. “Did you make them? They are incredible,” she added, her tone admiring. “What are they made of? I have do not think that I have ever seen any sort of metal like this, and they are very intricate. What sort of skills does one need to learn how to Runeforge?” She wanted to know. “Must one also have a background in blacksmithing or jewelry making, for example?” She was quite certain that she was particularly unprepared for any such attempts at this, considering her education in the arcane arts… or, well, the lack thereof.

“A morph is a variation?” Aardwalden asked, unfamiliar with the term. She seemed to have so much to say on the matter! “Ohoh, it’s been quite awhile since I saw one.” His head bobbled slowly to and fro, stirring the ancient memories. “As large as me, thereabouts! Certainly not ‘dwarf’, but docile. The chasm they were found in - they fed upon the moss, but I did hear of a gnome who had a nasty bite from one after trying to ride it up a cliffside once upon a time!”

“So much passion! Perhaps reptiles are your Calling? Maybe one day you will minister the Solar Sovereign’s beasts, or become a Wyvern-rider with the Praeventores! I myself know so little about the field of Herpetology, but I’ve always been fascinated by the Dragons. You know, gnomes such as I are descended from the Greatwyrm Nomura of the Copper Dragonflight! When she died, the Dragon Goddess - oh, forgive me. I don’t mean to utter blasphemies, I am merely proud to have a dragon’s curiosity as some fraction of my soul.”

To her question on the displays, Aardwalden slowly shook his head. It was true that the metal was unusual, but that was merely the yellowish varnish Aardwalden had used to bronze the armor and its many elaborate symbols, many of which were Pictographics accurate to the era speaking in honor of the dwarf who mentored him, and his gratitude. “It warms my soul to see you so fond of my creations,” he remarked aloud, practically beaming with pride. Even a simple Vastian from the fringes of the Luxium had a worthy opinion to Aard, for he considered himself above politics and cultural norms, having lived as something along its fringes for centuries now; even if the Stoneborn were regarded as nobility in some Gnomish holds, he never pursued the opportunity, for Runeforging was his Calling. “Nay, the displays are merely decorative, to exemplify my foreign trade. One day I will be able to justify the creation of a safe example for my clientele,” said the gnome. “I did however create them, yes. They are made from standard Solunarian steel, and coated with varnish.”

There was so much that went into, or could go into Runeforging. “We manufacture a highly malleable ore with magical properties, then work the material into such shapes as thread for garments - tailoring and the like - or we shape it into jewelry, arms, and armor, even furnishings and decorum. Any trade will suffice. Once, there was even a gnome who made Runeforged paints to create works of art beyond what can be described in the Common tongue!” He raised a finger to the ceiling above, to bring attention to the very stone around them. “My apprentices and I serve a cultural nexus - the Umbrium - with a demand for art, arms, armor, and tools. Legionnaires, bards, even duelists and those who sponsor gladiators are the sort of customers that frequent these shops. I do like your passion; if you’ve a similar enthusiasm for arcana with as much drive as you do for your pet, we do have an apprenticeship position to apply for at this time,” Aardwalden mentioned. “The position is quite demanding, however. Each of my apprentices must at least pursue another art form to pair with Runeforging - smithing or jewelry are two, but sewing to manufacture Runeforged attire also has its use. My Apprentices also learn Pictography and Scrivening to better understand what they are working with.”

“A Morph is a colour pattern, yes,” Hilana agreed. “I like to use that word, sort of like a metamorphosis. It seems more magical. They do not look like much now, but when they grow… their skin will look like little facets and fractals of those gemstones.” She listened intently to his talk of these rock tegu, and if she hadn’t already known that the dreaded Orks were everywhere outside Atraxia, she would have thought it might be fun to find this tegu across the sea. But perhaps she could inquire at the market, or send a letter back with Asher and see if the traders could find such a thing for her. All the benefits while never leaving the Sands.

His enthusiasm about her possible future with such exotic creatures; well, that was certainly a dream. And if she worked hard and mastered what she needed to know, there was nothing to say it couldn’t become a possibility. She had reasons to stay in Solunarium now, and such things, as lofty a dream as they were, were something to aspire to. If she didn’t try… she would never know, now, would she? “I did not know that Gnomes come from the Dragons, no,” she admitted. “That is quite incredible, and it really is something to be proud of. You are the first Gnome that I have ever met, truth be told.” But she did not look upset or shocked at his mentioning of other Gods beyond their Founders, as some might have. It wasn’t the first time she had heard tell of other deities worshiped across the sea, though it was perhaps the first time she had heard it here. He did understand what he had said, though, so she knew she did not need to gently remind him of such things and expectations of their society.

“I may not have known what it was… but I see the beauty in your crafting. There is such precision and elegance in your creations. You have put a part of you into everything that you make. That is the hallmark of a Master craftsman,” she inclined her head to him. She listened intently as he spoke of what Runeforging was when it was distilled down for someone like her. She had a feeling he was an excellent teacher, if he managed to stay this patient with what had to be the most very basic questions to him. That clarified quite a bit for her, and she was glad of his explanations. It was quite fascinating.

And she knew, beyond any level of doubt, that it was utterly beyond her.

She considered. As much as she was promised to her mentor in Port Vasta, and that was a demanding job, perhaps she could try to learn some of what he was talking about and consider such an opportunity later. But she also had never been a crafter. She could make a few patchwork repairs that would hold up, and probably stab her fingers with the needle... unless she was sewing skin. But there were few things aside from coaxing animals or deftly dissecting plants that she could sit still for for long. They had tried her in quite a few back in Tertium, especially weaving... her Aunt Sarala had been stuck on that one for Founders knew why... but Hilana did not have as much patience or ability to sit still with them. As he mentioned the various disciplines that went into Runeforging, Hilana was trying to match them up mentally with what she knew of the various Arcanic practices. “Pictography, that would be some of the symbols on here, yes?” She looked from the Stoneborn to the suit of armour and back down to him, wanting to make sure that she was not about to miss something. “And Scrivening is the fundamental language of all Arcana?” The way she phrased it more as a question suggested that while she was quite knowledgeable about the subject of reptiles, her grasp of Arcana, even for a native Vastii, left much to be desired.

“Please forgive my ignorance of such things. My education was somewhat different to that of many of my people,” she sounded apologetic. “I am presently apprenticed as a herbalist in Port Vasta, so I am afraid that right now, I do not think I could commit properly and fully to your work here, and honour it as it should be. But I will try to learn more about these subjects, so that should things change, I could perhaps one day be useful to you here.”
