Frost 21, 122
The darkness which prevailed about Gel'Grandal was especially pervasive in certain places; near the Gash of course, but in the nights around many of the gothic state buildings it was kept back only by the constant aegis of the Kathar protectors. Even where the Sunstone lights blazed and patrols roamed the streets, the city seemed bleak, and the Imperium's citizens slept soundly only because they believed in their ever-watchful overseers' powers to protect them from the umbral horrors.

That same watchfulness had driven the two Zaichaeri witches outside the city limits. The same powers which protected the city drew the monsters, so the undefended countryside was, paradoxically, less prone to the things. As they traveled the roads (though Carina could have brought them through slipspace, they wanted to avoid any trace of that magic for the night) the two girls saw virtually none of the accursed creatures.

Not that they were worried about them. It was the Inquisition and Kathar guard they sought to avoid this night.

"I'd love to see one fight someday." Imogen commented, apropos of nothing as they turned another road, following well-traveled paths to a place which would not, just now, be terribly busy. "A Kathar, I mean. I've seen the Synnekar fight, and the disciples of Raxen on the mountain, and they were okay, but the Kathar are supposed to have some kind of super-secret training regimen that makes them unbeatable, right?"

There was a genuine eagerness in Imogen's voice. As far as Carina knew, one of Imogen's only real personal vices was a love of blood sport- something her Ork friend did not participate in herself, as Imogen had confessed to her that she found it "just a bit tricky" to hit someone without killing them. Still, she'd regularly watched the brawls in Zaichaer, and had spent a surprising amount of their trip to Kalzasi observing practice rounds.

Perhaps it was merely chance that these musings on fighting came right as the pair came upon the first gate to the graveyard just beyond the city. Again it was a gloomy sort of place, plots of sod and dead grass as far as the eye could see, broken up only by the larger mausoleums and cryptway entries. But the shadow-beasts found no sustenance among the dead, and the Kathar had better things to do than stand guard over musty tombs, which meant that it was relatively perfect for the spell which the two witches had come here to cast today.

The lychyard gates were closed and chained together, but although that would have been little challenge for Carina, Imogen simply jumped up the gate, landing lightly on the chains and the top of the bars, then dropping down onto the ground on the other side. She'd gotten a lot better at moving like a sneak thief should, since her introduction to Animus.

"There's an empty display mausoleum just ahead." Imogen confirmed, her eyes peering easily through the darkness. "We can close the doors, light up the sunstone, and set a warning glyph. Should stop us from being surprised halfway through."

There was a nervous tint to Imogen's voice now, though she tried to hide it. The rune she had asked Carina to bestow was not meant to be as dangerous as Reaving, but there was no such thing as a safe initiation. Even Animus, the one Cardinal Rune which could not kill the recipient, had left her stranded between dreams and waking, abed for days thereafter. Still, she had survived two initiations and much other strange magic besides, and the power she sought was worthy of the risk.

Bundled in her magic coat of being-the-perfect-temperature, with her cloak of concealment pulled over it, the night walk was horrifically silent, save for a single scream from a farmhouse on a hill in the distance that held dawnstone lights. The graveyard, just east of the Northside "limits", though sprawl was to be accounted for, was deathly quiet. Carina had stashed her moonstone necklace in her bag, and though the brighter lights of the city were attracting far more hordes of monsters, they seemed endless. Though part of the reason they walked was because they didn't want to draw more attention through magic, it didn't help that Carina had never been to the graveyard itself.

"Don't they have the sports? The... ..." The word escaped Carina for a moment. "They have a whole arena where they fight. I guess that's not going on now, though. But maybe later." Carina shrugged, "I don't think they're unbeatable." But she figured she meant in a far different way than Imogen. Carina was never one to face someone in combat; she could shoot her rifle, though without great finesse, but mostly she didn't want to be known to exist to fight in the first place. None could harm her if they did not know of her.

Still, they were unbothered, as if they were shadow ghosts themselves. Carina wanted to blink, but she couldn't use the magic if she didn't have the light. And so, much less gracefully than Imogen's leap, the skinny girl followed the fence until she found a bent piece and shimmied her way through. The time spent on the sands of the Duck had meant she had smoked less, remarkably, and now she wasn't craving a cigarette every second of the day. Little wonders.

"Close the doors...maybe the moonstone I have would be better...? Warning glyph." She agreed with Imogen's plan. She made it to the mausoleum first and immediately sat on the dusty stone. It wasn't too bad, actually, considering it was empty — but much of the small infrastructural upkeep that Imperials were accustomed to was not a priority in these times.

Carina dug through her featherlight bag for a writing utensil to the light of the moonstone necklace she had retrieved first. A pen was too sharp, and would either break or skip on Imogen's scales or be too sharp on the soft spots. She had thought she had a piece of charcoal, but it did not reveal itself. Carina stared into the bag for a moment, and then pulled out a small pouch of makeup. She didn't wear it in her everyday life, but performance required a full face. She opened that pouch and pulled out a tube of red lipstick, only rarely used. With a kohl eyeliner pencil, she stood up and scrawled a semblance glyph on each inner wall of the mausoleum to alert her if an aura of anything new came near.

She sat back down and put the eyeliner away. She absolutely could have used it to draw the glyph on Imogen, but she had gotten the idea in her head to use lipstick. "Here, come under the cloak with me." It was a large cloak, but they'd still need to sit close together.

"Where do you want the rune?" She didn't ask if Imogen was sure about receiving it; if anything, she was surprised that she had not managed to acquire it from another source, given the Ork's frequent admiration of teleportation and portal-work.

The inside of the little stone building was dark in the soft silver light of Carina's gemstone, but it was nothing like the oppressive gloom outside. Carina sat upon the stone plinth, holding her cloak wide, inviting, and Imogen felt heat flush throughout her body. It was a fascinating tableau, the slim silver-limned woman on the smooth stone table, and any number of exotic notions flashed through Imogen's imagination.

But she pushed fantasy firmly to the side. They were here on business.

"I think... the small of my back." the Ork said, voice as soft as the selenity itself, "It's easier to cover than my arms or legs, in a scrap."

Imogen secured the door, ensuring that none of Carina's moonlight could escape and attract attention, then walked slowly to the small stone table and the witch upon it. She shrugged off her coat, stripping off one sleeve, then another, and letting it fall to the smooth and dusty floor. She pulled her shirt over her head with one hand, being too broad to easily wriggle free of it, exposing her midriff and shoulders. The moonlight refracted into rainbows where it struck her opal scales, adding little dances of color across the walls and the plinth.

The witch climbed carefully on to the table, though there was no question of a block of solid stone being able to to hold the weight of two girls. She pushed herself backwards under Carina's cloak, presenting her back for inscription. Lipstick was a new one but, according to every principle she knew, it ought to work. It was certainly preferable to the brand which Ansel Gerhard had used to grant her Reaving and begin the duel for life and soul and sanity.

"...okay. I'm ready."

It was a lie, of course. The Cardinal Runes joined the soul of the recipient to a supernal force- by definition, you could not understand what initiation would open up until it had been accomplished. Yet Imogen had survived two runes and come through the stronger for it, and she certainly didn't intend to let a third defeat her.

Carina curled over, dimunitive as she was compared to Imogen. The lipstick was a darker red, rather than a bright red, and it didn't clash too badly with the Ork's green skin. She'd never initiated anyone into anything, and it did not bother her. Hand in astral hand, she would guide Immy back to her body. The rune was drawn, even in dim light, rather quickly.

There was a single line left of the rune. Carina stared at it, the lipstick hovering in her grasp just over the small of her friend's back. It was bitingly cold around her ears, but the rest of her was comfortable in oversized coat and close to Imogen. Her forehead was pressed against Imogen's shoulderblades. She moved one hand to stabilize her shoulder. When she had been initiated, the disconnect between herself and her body was nigh instantaneous, and she didn't want the woman to get bodily hurt in the process.

"Ready?" She asked, but she did not wait for a response. The last line was drawn.

She was stronger than she looked, and she was able to keep Imogen from crashing to the floor of the masoleum, and directed her backwards. She slipped out of the way, and laid herself down next to the body Imogen, only taking a moment to brush the hair out of her friend's eyes. So it wouldn't obscure her vision when she woke up.

Carina closed her eyes and in the sort of way one can always ride a bike, she stepped out of her body and into the masoleum, her eyes adjusting to the pocket of the world between Slipspace and physical; where the astral was in Slipspace, but she could still see the real. Of anything, she always felt more comfortable being inside her own body. Leaving the thing, even in seculsion, was an anxiety-ridden task. She was more than capable of getting to where she needed to without the assistance of astral projection. Well-practiced as she was, it did not dampen her fear.

It was worth it to assist Immy on her initiation.

"I'm going to follow you. In case you get lost, I can bring you back home."

Imogen had suffered initiation twice before, and she knew there was a particular state of mind the initiate ought to strive for. Her uncle had described it as "the splendid detachment," a holistic state of mind which mixed a sort of meditative awareness of the body with a state of total acceptance which would permit the recipient of the Rune to suffer a minimum amount of psychic shock from the instant of its application. In neither prior case had Imogen achieved it; in Reaving, Master Gerhard had branded her in the space of an instant, beginning the life-or-death initiation duel before she even knew it was happening. For Animus, she'd been high off her ass on weird Ecithian berries.

There should have been no such barriers here, but Imogen failed a third time anyway. Feeling Carina's touch, her breath on the Ork's naked back, the gentle slide of her fingers across her skin- for just a few moments, the witch was lost in pure sensation, and then-

"Ready?"

Suddenly, the world was reeling. Imogen's body fell away from her soul, and her spirit was exposed at once to the entire fabric of the veil which had been strung across the fabric of the mortal plane.

The witch's eyes closed, and then the eyes of her spirit opened. She was still inside the earthy mausoleum, but just for a moment- she found her perspective shifting, slowly at first, then faster, as her untethered astral form floated upwards and through the ceiling.

When she emerged from the top of the little edifice, the world had changed. The sky was a riot of colors, the endless miles of infinitely-thin veil failing to shield the awful majesty of the Astral Sea from Imogen's gaze. Gel'Grandal loomed before her, each building a monument to the suffering and triumphs of the people within; but it was also like the great city was made of glass. Below it, through it, around it, Imogen could see the nothingness through which the Railrunners had so often taken her.

The small of her back burned as the Rune of Traversion took hold, and Imogen felt herself trying to hyperventilate without success- lacking a body, she could not even go through the physiological motions of being totally overwhelmed. She felt herself trying to shrink into her own soul, as though seeking shelter within from the looming truth of the previously-invisible infinities all around her. She cast her eyes around, trying to focus on a thing, on any one thing so she could distract herself from the sea of being around her, but it was fruitless. The Rune, merciless, revealed the nothing beyond everything she looked at.

Imogen whimpered, and the surprise of hearing her own ghostly voice almost startled her out of her shock. The anxious energy built up took hold all at once, and she found herself moving, slipping into the astral city beyond, even though none of her ghostly limbs were moving. She fought for a moment to gain control of this motionless movement, but it was in vain; she did not yet understand the mechanics of this form, of this place, and so she found herself swept deeper into the astral, helpless.

Carina noticed Imogen floating off just late enough that she had to go on a short chase. She had always been an odd one, and in her own initiation she had wandered through the Pfenning and danced, unseen on the stage with the rehearsing ballerinas. Imogen did not seem to have so much focus.

"Immy, slow down!" Even while astral projecting, Imogen could move faster than she. Longer legs still counted for something when your body was lying still in a mausoleum, though the newly-initiated wasn't moving her limbs at all. She grabbed her hand, stopping Imogen's travel. "You have to think, Imogen. You can't just let the slipspace carry you away." She squeezed her astral hand. "If you don't think about where you're going, you will not find your way back. You have to choose to move."

Imogen's focus seemed to be everywhere but her. "Don't look too hard. Just look at me, and then look at the gravestones. Can you read their names?" A Traverser since she was a child, Carina had forgotten the constant grounding exercises she had forced herself to do, over and over, so that she didn't slip away. It was another reason she preferred to be in her body.

"Know where you're going. Where do you want to go?" She took a step forward, still holding onto Imogen, and looked expectantly back at the Orkhan to take a step, too. "Walk. Don't float." A projection of the soul did not necessarily need to walk, but it was one of the most useful tricks that Carina had for staying moored to reality. She hadn't really ever seen Imogen so scared, but she had also not ever seen her other initiations, more intense as they seemed, but perhaps...less existential. Though she knew little about Animus, she knew one could lose themselves in a different way just as easily.

The Ork didn't hear Carina, not at first. The unfamiliar experience was too disorienting, too distracting; directions didn't matter, the universe stretched away without end in every direction, and Imogen felt as though her entire being had contracted to a single point behind her ghostly eyes. The panic might have spiraled forever, leaving her spirit to float hopelessly into the starry sky, unburdened by purpose or identity.

Then Carina grabbed her hand, and she felt her senses snap back to herself. All at once, she was again floating in the air, in a specific place and time in Gel'Grandal, and not merely lost in everything. She blinked stupidly at her ghostly friend, the sound of her voice washing uselessly over her ears for a few more moments. With an act of will, she focused-

"-think about where you're going, you will not find your way back. You have to choose to move. Don't look too hard. Just look at me, and then look at the gravestones. Can you read their names?"

It was hard to focus, even on her friend, but Imogen was nothing if not willing to follow directions. She stared at Carina's astral self for a moment, trying to ignore the infinities gaping behind her. Even as a ghost, Carina was beautiful; something which was easier to think about when detached from one's body, which could interrupt this sort of analysis with sudden and distracting input. The Ork wandered for a moment if the look of a spirit was driven by the mind, or if some people were simply lovely within and without the flesh.

With that distraction, the witch had calmed herself to the point where she felt capable of following the next set of directions. She glanced down at the tombstones below, trying as hard as she could to only see the surface of the rocks and not the endless well of slipspace beyond them.

"Giles... Becker... Samuel Emil... Friedrich..."

Instinctively, Imogen tried to breathe deeply during the attempt to calm down- it didn't work, not in astral form, and she aborted that before the failure alarmed the part of her brain responsible for panicking while drowning. Instead, she looked at her other arm--the one Carina was not holding--and tried moving it slowly, following its motion, reminding herself that of all the everything around her, she was responsible primarily for this bit.

"Uh-" Imogen spoke, realizing just now that her voice was echoing disturbingly. "Walking. Uh. One foot, then the other, then repeat. Then repeat. Repeat." Carina was right; this didn't seem to do much in terms of real movement, but something about it settled some part of her. Still, she wanted to focus on that, not start thinking more abstractly, in case she fell into nothing once more.

"Let's... let's go to the city." The Ork thought it might help to have tall buildings on all sides, to distract herself. "What's that building you were talking about last night? The rail depot?"

"The rail depot, yes. Did you know that trains have an aura? And if you study it, you can learn what is inside...and who. And who has been inside. And that sometimes, the railcars full of coal are not full of coal at all. And sometimes the railcars full of people are full of inquisitors, and you really don't want to get onto those." Carina held Imogen's hand as she spoke, and they walked to the rail depot at a speed they would not normally have been able to reach. Skyscrapers touched the swirling nighttime clouds on either side of them, and the black-glass buildings gave way to brick tenements gave way to factories that worked at all hours now with no night to distinguish. Thick smoke was pumped into the sky and mixed with the fog, if there had been any fog to begin with. Cars drove past them wherever they went, but they were invisible to the world right now. Someone on a motorcycle drove right between them. There were many train stops near the factories, to import and export everything from raw materials to entire vehicles.

Carina had noticed one night — if it had been night, indeed, while perching on the roof of the rail depot, that there was a car that went into the depot with a much different aura than it had left with. And while most of the coal was dropped off to power steam and back up the magitech works of Gel'Grandal, this car — and a few like it — left with their coal untouched. But they were too quick for Carina to Semble in entirety once she had noticed this. She had wanted to come back and figure it out. It was sticking to her brain like honey, the kind of sticky you couldn't get rid of without a thorough washing with soap, and she kept thinking about it.

But maybe Imogen just wanted to look at trains. The woman had odd hobbies — the stack of beekeeping books she had seen her with at one point, though she was fairly sure she'd never actually tended to a hive in her life.

"I think passenger trains come by around here, too." She skipped over myriad train tracks, making it seem even more effortless and flowy than she did in person.

Imogen didn't really care much about trains one way or another, she simply wanted an excuse to follow Carina and focus on her words rather than the world.

The buildings did help, a little. They didn't really block out the vast deepness beyond, but the witch understood that no simple matter could do that. Still, it was a little like walking through a city of glass; each wall might be translucent, but in the aggregate they distracted your vision and gave you a certain sense of confinement.

Every so often, the Ork caught flashes of movement. People walking the streets, unaware of the spirits passing through them at a rapid clip. Cars driving, shimmering with the mirage-like distortions produced by their active dragonshards. Flashes of a thing slowly making its way through the Slipspace, small as a dog or bigger than a house.

(The monsters in Slipspace didn't bother Imogen even a little. She'd seen plenty of those with the Railrunners, and she'd never yet met a creature her sword couldn't harm.)

The Sunsinger clung to Carina like an anchor, though she could not have said whether she could actually feel the smaller woman's hand. Her practice of Animus had taught her a surprising amount about the function of bodies, and she knew now that some things you felt through your nerves and other things you felt through... imagination? Something like that. Either way, the contact felt like the only solid thing in the ever-shifting world beyond, like the only fulcrum upon which anything could turn.

"They hide things aboard the trains, then." Imogen didn't sound surprised- she wasn't new to the business. "But if you can tell the difference, you can figure out which trains are worth hitting."

The two had talked about train heists before, and largely agreed that they only made sense under two conditions:

1. The haul had to be extremely good because the consequences would be heavy
2. You had to be able to identify them well in advance, because you needed a lot of time to set up an ambush

Carina had told Imogen that it would probably only happen if she could get some real informants in place, which disappointed the Ork, but only a little. Imogen wasn't suicidal by any stretch of the imagination, and was not prepared to die in battle against a half-dozen Kathar guards. Well, the trainyard was interesting, but the terror was beginning to work its way back through Imogen's soul at the end of the other woman's explanation. She needed another distraction, and right away.

Hm. Speaking of guards-

"They can't see us like this, right? Here in the astral? Do you know where the Kathar train? This might be my best chance to get a look at them."

"It's not so simple." Carina had thought about it for a moment. "They can know we're here, if they have semblance they can feel it — and they usually train in the Palace of Spires. That's their headquarters. It's heavily warded, beyond what I can deal with... for now."

She shrugged. "I'd rather not risk it. The astral is locked down by powerful mages, as is the slipspace, as is the physical... I haven't even begun to research how to crack that nut. I will, though." She looked up at Imogen. "We can go look at the palace from afar, though. Unless..." A shadow creature that was circling the train depot seemed to look at them, though it was "physical" and they were not. "Unless we should be careful. Maybe we should head back... I don't know how long you have to spend here, but the hard part is getting back into your body, I think."

Carina float-walked back into the city proper, away from the train depot, where the skyscrapers rose tall. A prickle at the back of her neck and she started to float-run through the city — "I think we attracted too some attention," she called back to Imogen, and she headed straight for the unwarded cemetary their bodies lay in. It was warded to alert them of a presence, but only alert them. Carina did not know Negation, and so there wasn't much more she could do in that regard. She slipped through the grated window high at the top of the masoleum, and then stood above their bodies until Imogen was there too.

"You just have to climb back into your body and remember what it's like to be physical. To feel. It can be difficult to remember... that's partly why some initiates never make it back."
