Garr stood in his family's courtyard, holding a small shield in his hand that he found lying around. He had only used Enmesh once before, and it was just to make a rock feel wet. He had never attempted to use it on an object like this before. Enmesh was an ability that let Elementalists kind of apply elemental properties to items. Garr had always been fascinated by the idea of using Enmesh to create powerful weapons and tools. However, he had never been particularly skilled with his magic, and the idea of trying something new made him nervous.

Garr's mind was filled with excitement and anticipation as he delved deeper into the world of Elementalism. With each passing moment, he felt more connected to the elements around him and more powerful in his abilities. He had always known that there was something special about him, something that set him apart from the rest of his family, and now he was finally starting to understand what that was. As he chanted the incantation for Enmesh, he could feel the energy of the elements flowing through him like a river, powerful and unyielding. He could feel the heat of the fire element, the chill of the water element, the force of the earth element, and the whirling winds of the air element, all coming together to create a potent force that he alone could control.

His mind was a swirling vortex of energy and power, and he could sense the shield in his hand becoming heavier and more substantial as the Enmesh spell took hold. As he opened his eyes, he saw a faint blue liquid surrounding the shield, a shimmering aura that seemed to glow with the power of the water element. Garr marveled at the sight before him, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment that he had never experienced before. He could feel the water element coursing through the shield, imbuing it with a dampness that made it slick to the touch, and he knew that he had succeeded in his task.

Despite having found success with his magic use, he found that the the effects of the spell did not last long. As he stroked a finger across the surface of the shield, he found that it no longer felt slick. So, he tried again and tried to use more energy to make the spell last as long as possible.

He tried different movements, making small circles with his hand, then switching to large sweeping motions, all in an effort to perfect his technique. He tried infusing the shield with different amounts of energy, from the tiniest trickle to the strongest flow he could muster, hoping to find the perfect balance that would create a lasting effect. He tried manifesting some water right on top of the shield so that it would trickle down and perhaps make it easier to Enmesh. Through all his trial and error, he never gave up. He continued to push himself to the limit, determined to achieve his goal.

Finally, after many attempts, Garr found success. He had managed to make the shield slick and made the effect last a decent amount of time. It was a small victory, but it was a start. He knew that there was still much more to learn, but he was confident that with his determination and perseverance, anything was possible.

Garr took a break and tried to clear his mind. He knew nothing about meditation but he knew that he could not continue his training session if he was so caught up in his desires. Garr sat down on the ground, the grains sticking to his damp skin. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, feeling the desert air fill his lungs. He tried to clear his mind of all thoughts, but found it difficult. The desire to master his Enmesh ability weighed heavily on him, and he couldn't help but feel frustrated at his lack of progress.

He focused on his breathing, trying to slow it down and match it with the rhythm of the city around him. He imagined himself as a stone in a river, letting the flow of the water wash away his thoughts and worries. After several minutes, he felt his mind start to clear, only a little. He could not help but get distracted by the sounds of someone sweeping nearby.

He looked angrily at the servant who swept away without caring that he was trying to concentrate. He imagined strangling her and only then did he felt a sense of peace wash over him, and he realized that he had been too caught up in training. He remembered why he had started his training in the first place: to become a better slaver and provide for his family. He smiled to himself, feeling a renewed sense of determination. He stood up, brushing off the sand from his clothes, and picked up the shield. He knew that he still had a lot to learn, but he was ready to continue his training with a clear mind and a focused purpose.

Garr walked over to the servant and asked, “what are you doing here?" he recognized her now. She was one of the nicer ones. Not all the servants were nice to him since he was treated poorly.

Aisha looked up at him with wide eyes. "I was just watching you practice," she said softly.

Garr snorted. "Why would you want to watch me? I'm just a useless noble who can barely use his magic."

Aisha shook her head. "You're not useless," she said. "You have a gift, and you're working hard to make the most of it."

Garr was taken aback by her words. He had rarely heard anyone speak to him like that before. He had always been looked down upon by his family and peers, and he had grown to believe that he was worthless. But Aisha's words gave him hope. Maybe he wasn't as useless as he had thought. Maybe he could use his magical abilities to do something meaningful, something that would make a difference in the world. Then again, she was just a servant. It was easy for someone so worthless to envy a superior.

“Alright. Now get back to work,” he told her

Garr looked down at the shield again. It was a battered and rusted thing, probably why it was just lying around in the first place. Garr was drawn to it, sensing its potential. He could see that with the right application of Enmesh, he could transform it into a useful tool. He took the shield back to where he’d been sitting and began to experiment.

At first, Garr struggled to get the Enmesh to take hold. The shield resisted his efforts, as if it was unwilling to be imbued with magic. But Garr persisted, pouring all his energy and focus into the spell. Gradually, he began to see results. The metal of the shield began to take on additional properties, and he could almost feel a surge of power flowing through it.

Garr's concentration was intense as he envisioned the shield transforming in his mind's eye. He had always been fascinated by the earth element and had been practicing his elementalism with it for some time. Now, as he chanted the incantation for Enmesh, he could feel the energy of the earth coursing through him, filling him with a sense of strength and stability. He closed his eyes, shut out all distractions and focused solely on the task at hand.

As he opened his eyes, he saw a faint brown mist surrounding the shield. He reached out and touched the surface, feeling the texture of the earth beneath his fingertips. He couldn't help but smile as he realized that he had successfully imbued the shield with the power of the earth element. The shield felt heavier in his hand, but at the same time, he could sense a new solidity and durability to it.

Garr studied the shield closely, examining every detail of the thin layer of earth that now coated its surface. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes again, preparing himself for his next attempt. As he tried once more, he could feel the energy of the earth intensifying within him. He pictured the shield being transformed into a nearly indestructible force, able to withstand the harshest of blows. He imagined the earth wrapping around the shield like a cocoon, offering complete protection to whatever lay within.

Unfortunately, there were limits that he simply could not surpass. The shield looked much the same as before despite his attempt to make it stronger. He sighed and tossed the damned thing aside. He needed to lie down. If he timed it right, he could squeeze a nap in before work started. He wanted his mental faculties to be in order if he was going to have to deal with slaves all day. If only they knew how hard it was to keep them in line.
