Frost 28th 2:30 Am

Myles sat in the dim light of a candle, he'd woken early, only able to tolerate a few hours rest on the incredible plush matress and pillows the inn provided. The orphan for her part rested easily her small head buried in the goose feather pillow the soft quilt pulled to her chin. She slept like a child aught to he thought, something she hadn't had an oppurtunity to do in a long minute, he hoped she would find their stay in this city restful, tomorrow he'd be meeting the woman who'd appeared on the barge and offered to cure the girl.

Unable to sleep Myles read through the first chapter of the book, "Secrets of the Dragonshard Mines," as he sat in his room at the "Royal Slumber Inn" in Sangen. The book provided a detailed explanation of the mining practices used to extract dragonshards from the earth.

Chapter One: Mining Practices

Greetings reader, if you have stumbled upon this book then I can only assume that you are seeking knowledge about dragonshards and their mines. I am Aegar, I have decades of experience in the dangerous and lucrative business of dragonshard mining. If you are looking for a casual read, then I suggest you put this book down and find something more suited to your tastes. However, if you are serious about learning the secrets of this trade, then read on.

As you may already know, dragonshards are powerful crystals that occur naturally in various locations throughout the world. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, each with its own unique properties and energies. The crystals are highly valued by many, from enchanters to warforged artisans, and are in constant demand. As a result, many have attempted to mine these crystals, but few have succeeded without suffering the consequences.

The extraction of dragonshards is not a simple task. If not done correctly, the energies within the crystals can cause catastrophic results. Entire mining expeditions have been wiped out due to the mishandling of these crystals. That is why it is crucial for anyone who wishes to mine these crystals to have a thorough understanding of the proper mining practices.

Dragonshard miners work in specifically trained teams of three or more individuals. At least one member of the team is trained in meditation and concentration techniques to tap into and manipulate the energies within the stones. This allows for the other members of the team to safely extract the crystals without the risk of the power within them raging out of control. The more powerful the dragonshard, the more members of the team required to control its energies, and for the most powerful, very special equipment must be employed to extract the stones.

The tools used in dragonshard mining must be specially designed to absorb or nullify the energies released by the crystals when struck. The most affordable tools, such as pickaxes and hammers, are treated with alchemical oils designed for this purpose. However, the most expensive tools are runeforged and crafted specifically for the task of dragonshard mining.

To avoid harm to the miners, an aether net is used to capture the energies released by the crystals during mining. The net is either treated with alchemical oils or runeforged and is cast over a large area of dragonshards or one particularly powerful one. Additionally, shard beacons are established in a perimeter around the mining area to draw in latent aether released by the crystals. These beacons prevent the energies from extending past the area being actively mined to avoid catastrophe.

In conclusion, mining dragonshards is a dangerous and complex task that requires proper training, equipment, and procedures. It is not for the faint of heart or those seeking an easy fortune. If you are serious about pursuing this trade, then I suggest you continue reading this book. The secrets of the dragonshard mines will not reveal themselves to those who do not put in the effort to learn them.

He was intrigued by the information presented in the book, especially the part about the specialized teams required to extract the crystals safely. The fact that at least one member of the team must be trained in meditation and concentration techniques to tap into and control the energies within the stones was fascinating to him. It made him wonder how powerful these crystals really were and what kind of dangers they posed.

Myles also found it interesting that different tools and equipment were required to mine the different types of dragonshards. The more powerful the crystal, the more advanced the tools required to extract it safely. He wondered how much these tools cost and how difficult they were to obtain. already calculating in his head from what he knew about the limited marked of Zaichaer.

As he continued to read, Myles found himself getting lost in the world of dragonshard mining. The book had a condescending tone, but he could tell that the author, Aegar, was knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. It made him want to learn more and perhaps even visit a dragonshard mine himself someday.

Eventually, exhaustion caught up with him, and Myles closed the book, placing it on the nightstand beside him. He laid down, pulling the covers up to his chin, and closed his eyes, ready to finally get some sleep. As he drifted off, he couldn't help but wonder what other secrets the dragonshard mines held and what adventures awaited him in the city of Sangen.

While the area that they stayed was generally considered safe, there were always those present who would disdain the law and choose to act as they pleased. Crime rates had begun to rise in the wake of the catastrophizes that seemed to come one after another of late, leading up to the great Eclipse and the shadow beasts which now claimed the world as their own. Some tried to ignore the changes in the world in favor of a false normalcy in routine and habit, but others saw an opportunity to live out darker dreams that had always remained slumbering in their wicked hearts.

There was the sound of scuffling outside the inn where Myles and his ward now stayed. Perhaps others heard it, but if they did the towns people had long decided to turn a blind eye to things which did not directly concern them. What irony it was that in the wake of Justice returning to Ransera there came a rise of unjust acts at every corner.

"All we want is your gold. Just drop the pouch, and hobble away." One voice said, strangely eloquent given then inherent threat. Other voices could be heard, too muffled to make out the words.

Outside near the edge of the inn where the horses were stabled a group of 4 men made a half circle around a smaller, hunched over figure with a long beard and balding head. His hands were raised in a feeble defense, spots of aging on his skin showing as he moved shakily to undo the coin pouch on his hip. Of the 4 assailants only one carried a long knife, the others stood or leaned confidently as they sneered.

Awoken by a sound he was all to familiar with Myles eyes cracked open at the telltale audio that could only be one thing… Crime.
Looking over to Eyla, who still slept soundly Myles crept up from his bed grabbing his sheathed sword and battered shield before creeping to the window. Peering through the cracks in the shutters Myles sneered at what he saw. Four men surrounding an elder, three goons and a wannabe gangster. Hoodlums who were too afraid to become bandits, but parasites that would feed on societies unfortunate and weak. Peeling back the shutters ever so slowly Myles could feel his instincts as a town guard kicking in, his desire to protect those who wanted to live in peace.
"All we want is your gold. Just drop the pouch, and hobble away."
Snarling inwardly when he heard the craven thug make his demands Myles through himself out the window. Leaping from the second story Myles feet connected with the shoulders of one of the goons an ugly mash faced man who let out a muffled gasp as all of Myles weight came down upon him. Landing in a deep crouch upon the man Myles was certain he heard several ribs and maybe a collar bone crack beneath him. As the men spun about to meet him Myles was already in motion, grabbing his peace tied sword by the hilt he swung the sword pommel first into the skull of the second goon, a greasy lanky man with more tattoos than teeth, he made no sound as he fell to the ground unconscious or dead. As for the third goon, he seemed the smartest of the three and had pulled his blade and was now swinging it at Myles neck. Intercepting the blow with his shield Myles slammed the man into the wall pinning him to it with his battered shield, the man’s sword clattering to the ground with a brief sense of finality. Looking back to the gang leader Myles sneered, the man had drawn a blade as well, but rather than join the fray he’d brought it to the old man’s throat. Meeting the man’s eyes with his own Myles continued to crus the third good into the wall with his shield even as the man struggled against it fighting to fill his chest with air against Myles temper fueled strength.

“If you fancy walking away from here, I would really reconsider what you are about to do.”
Myles said through gritted teeth. Weakening hands scrabbled against his shield and shoulder as the man pinned to the wall completely ignored by Myles as he watched the man for even a twitch that would betray his intent.
