So, after the teacher explained about the dragonshards and the aether, she started to show them how to use one. The whole room was watching really close 'cause they didn't want to miss anything.
The teacher held up the tool, the one with the pictures on it. She began to move the wand in weird patterns. Ivar noticed that her movements matched some of the pictures on the wand. And then, something really cool happened. The wand started to glow!
"The artifact is reacting to the Aether and the movements I'm doing are waking up the magic inside the dragonshard."
Everyone in the room was amazed. They all wanted to try it themselves, but the teacher told them to be patient.
"Before you can use one of these, you need to understand how the aether works. The aether is around us all the time, but you need to know how to tap into it. It's like a river flowing. You have to know where to dip your cup to drink."
The teacher then started to talk about how to control the magic once it's awake.
"Remember, the magic in the dragonshard is powerful. But you're the boss! The pictures on your tool, they're like your instructions to the magic. You have to be clear, and confident, and focus real hard. Otherwise, the magic might not do what you want. The point of this lesson is not to teach you how to use an artifact. It is merely to demonstrate the usefulness of the shards.”
That was a let down for most. But what could be done?
"Okay, now for the next part of the lesson, this is not your ordinary ink. This is special magic ink, made out of dragonshards!"
All the students were surprised. They'd used ink before to write stuff, but they didn't know you could make it out of dragonshards.
"Why would you grind up a dragonshard?"
The teacher smiled.
"Good question," she said. "You see, when you grind up a dragonshard, it releases the aether inside. And when you mix that with the ink, it makes the ink magical!"
She demonstrated by dipping a quill into the pot and writing some squiggles on a piece of paper. After a few seconds, the squiggles started to glow, just like the wand did earlier.
"The dragonshard ink allows you to write magic pictographs so, not only can you use a dragonshard to do magic, you can also write magic!"
Ivar was amazed. He'd never thought that writing could be magical. But it made sense, if you thought about it. After all, dragon shards were clearly powerful. And if you could use those to do magic, then anything was possible. Ivar couldn't wait to try it himself. He knew it wouldn't be easy, and he might make a lot of mistakes at first, but he was eager to learn. He wanted to be a world mage, and he was ready to do whatever it took to make that happen!
After the lesson, Ivar was so excited he couldn't wait to get started! He rushed over to a table in a quiet corner of the college. All he had was a piece of paper, normal ink, and a feathery quill. There was no fancy dragonshard ink or anything like that, but he didn't mind. He wanted to get the shapes of the symbols right first.
So, he dipped his quill in the ink and started to draw the symbols he learned. The first ones looked all wonky and weird. It was way harder than he thought. Every line, every curve mattered and his hand needed to move just right. But he didn't give up. He tried and tried, and each time he got a bit better.
He was so into his drawing that he forgot about everything else. It was like being in his own little world with just his paper and his ink. He knew he had to keep going if he wanted to be a real mage one day. And it didn't even feel boring. It felt kind of peaceful, actually.
Before he knew it, the day had turned into night. The cool crystals in the college were glowing softly, but he didn't really notice. He was too busy with his symbols. His hands were all black from the ink and his fingers were sore from holding the quill. His eyes felt a bit tired too, but he didn't care. He was doing something important.
His paper was full of symbols now. They were all over the place, big, small, wonky, neat. But among them, there were a few that looked really good. When he saw those, he felt proud. He knew he was getting better.
He was about to draw another symbol when he saw how late it was. Almost everyone else had left, and the college was all quiet. He felt super tired, but also happy. He put his things away and walked out of the hall with a big smile. He was just starting out, just a guy with some ink and paper. But he knew that someday, he'd be doing real magic. And he was ready for it.
That night, when Ivar plopped down onto his bed, he was too tired to even pull off his boots. But he was happy, with the day's adventures replaying in his mind. And as soon as his eyes closed, he was deep in a dream.
In his dream, he was back in the Ascertanium. But this time, it wasn't a quiet corner. It was the center stage! Everyone from the Circle was there, watching him. He wasn't scared though. He felt excited and ready. His dream self was not holding a regular quill but a fancy one, with real dragonshard ink! And the paper? It was a huge scroll, way bigger than him!
He stepped up to the scroll and dipped his quill into the shiny, magical ink. He started to draw the first symbol he learned. But in the dream, it wasn't hard at all. His hand moved like it knew exactly what to do. And when he finished the symbol, it started to glow!
He was so excited that he started to draw another symbol, and then another. Each one was perfect and each one glowed brighter. It felt like he was not just drawing symbols, but telling a story. A story of magic and power and cool stuff like that.
Soon, his scroll was full of glowing symbols. It was like a starry night sky, but on paper. Everyone was cheering and clapping. He looked around and saw the Ascertainer. She was clapping too and had a big smile on her face.
Just when he thought it couldn't get better, the symbols on the scroll started to move! They floated up into the air and started to dance around him. It was like he was inside a galaxy of symbols, each one spinning and twirling. He reached out to touch one and felt a jolt of magic. He laughed out loud because it felt so awesome.
Then, one by one, the symbols flew back to the scroll. But this time, they didn't just sit there. They started to transform into real things! A symbol for fire turned into a small flame. A symbol for water turned into a bubbling stream. It was like his scroll was a magical 3D movie!
He looked at his dragonshard quill and the almost empty inkpot. He felt powerful and ready for anything. He knew that this was what he wanted. He wanted to be a scrivener, a mage, a storyteller. And he was gonna be the best one ever!
Just as he was about to draw another symbol, a rooster crowed somewhere far off. He blinked, and the dream started to fade away. He was back in his room, under his cozy blanket. But even though the dream was over, he felt like it was still with him. Like it was a promise of what he could be.
Ivar squinted against the early morning sunlight. His dream still fluttered at the edges of his mind, all the shiny symbols and the cheers. He wished he could just dive back into it. Curling up tighter, he pulled the blanket over his head, trying to chase the last remnants of the dream. Even though Ivar tried his hardest, sleep just wouldn't come back. So, he sighed, let go of the wish to keep dreaming, and finally rolled out of bed. Rubbing his eyes, he got ready to face the day, his mind still filled with the symbols from his dream.
Suddenly, Ivar's eyes popped wide open as he glanced at the empty beds next to him. He gasped, realizing he was almost late for class! With the images of dream symbols still swirling in his head, he rushed to get ready, hoping he wouldn't miss any of the day's lesson.
