The Higher Price [Aurin]

Glade 12th, 123

Many hours had he spent observing those who walked the boards of the Velvet Cabaret, sometimes among them and sometimes perched where he might observe unseen. It was so near to the home of his Magus employer that, coming or going or waiting, Rivin could not but see some of what went on. This garnering of snippets had led to interest, which had led to more intentional observation.

Over many months he had seen and heard many things, some of which he understood, some he did not, and some that he only grew to understand over time.

While he had learned that there was a market for those who would simply bend or thrust without comment when passed silver, it was the allure of seduction that earned the glint gold. Why the art of drawing someone in required this higher price was, at first, confusing. Yet, over time he had come to realize things that, to his displeasure, he could not think of a way to express. The patrons enjoyed themselves more when they were enticed, even when they had come to t he Cabaret, or other establishment, with the expressed intention of finding a sexual partner in exchange for payment.

Rivin did not want sexual partners for his own gratification, at least... he did not think he did. Being close with Sivan felt good, secure and pleasant in a way he could only describe in the terms of his zoological studies. They were all animals too, or had come from animal bases before gods or nature had tampered with them, the need for nesting, for having a safe den and others to share work and touch with where psychologically important for well being. This was something he had assumed he was above, until he'd had it. What he paid his Magus to do for him wasn't sex, it was just an adaptation to respond to urges both biological and trained into him until they were part of him.

But seduction, and its myriad applications, was a tool. Seeing that had not taken him long, for the artisans that plied the trade of their bodies in the Cabaret used their skills to dissuade patrons that they did not wish to service as often as they used them to draw in ones they did. Additionally they were able to negotiate any number of things that seemed to have little to do with the proposition itself. When he'd come to recognize the more subtle expressions he began to see it all over. From children barely old enough to be budding to shop keeping matrons and patrons, anyone could employ small seductions, small flirtations, to ensure a more favorable outcome for themselves.

It was too valuable a skill not to learn it himself. There were only two people he trusted to ask for such training and, while Sivan did seem to know how to do it when he was with one of his lovers he did not seem to realize that he knew how. The implication, that it was something learned instinctively by those raised among society, both intrigued Rivin and made him feel woefully behind his peers. Aurin though, Aurin used seduction often, almost constantly. At times it felt like he was a physical embodiment of the idea as he moved through the world. Perhaps he would teach Rivin, and, if not, he could direct him to a teacher. It was a skill that would help in his work, after all.

He sent a brief message through the enchanted pendant he had been granted by his employer, asking if they could meet. It was late, by the time he arrived outside the little house, but Aurin was rarely inside unless it was late. He did not knock, the Magus would know he had arrived and making any sound that wasn't a necessity felt wrong to the Lysanrin.

The door was unlock; in fact, it was ever so slightly ajar. He knew Rivin was coming, and he was so hyperaware of that alleyway, that nobody was going to show up without him knowing. Not only that, but he knew it so well that his glamours were nigh perfect when he wanted people to experience it in a different way and, if all else failed, he knew the slipspace thereabouts so intimately, he could be anywhere from buried in Torin's secret basement to his far-flung mountain valley, though that would still involve roughing it and Aurin had always been a shoe made for the city.

If he were meditating upon the same things as Rivin, he would have smirked. Many were the people who had told him he would make an excellent courtesan. He would respond in any number of ways, but generally, he would delegate to one of the courtesans who relied on such for their bread and butter. Aurin didn't disagree. He had learned to con as a kid, and until Arry—although it wasn't until Torin that he fully internalized it—he had thought love nothing more than an elaborate con. But it took a could-be courtesan to keep the courtesans working smoothly and safely. The leap into theater management had felt natural. The seductions on stage were merely more stylized; the cons behind the scenes were more polite—usually. And business, well, business was always a confidence game.

Aurin played more characters than the darlings of the stage, whether playing entirely different personae like good old Darus of Haqs to playing different versions of Aurin Kavafis. Impresario, keiretsu mogul, witch-king, magus... sometimes he even played the hero.

"Don't dawdle at the door," he said without looking when Rivin finally stood in the open doorway.

The little cottage had been fixed up properly as his fortunes had risen. It was still sparsely furnished and decorated, but the kitchen and bathroom were improved. Aurin the Magus was pouring tea into mugs already containing a shot of liquor; Glade hadn't brought even Kalzasi's idea of warmth and so he fought the chill in other ways. He set the stage, the scent of tea and the wood fire in the hearth welcoming, as well as the sight of the lines of his back through the thin material of his shirt. Yes, Aurin used little seductions constantly.

Pushing into the opening of the door with the side of his body, slinking inside in the way that would open the door, and thus release the heat held within, as little as possible, Rivin obeyed the invitation.

"Good evening, Magus." He didn't cut a bow, but his tail slide to one side and his posture spoke of one. Being polite in such ways came naturally to him, even when he was scrambling along rooftops or skulking down dark allies. It was the only way he'd been allowed to interact with other sentient beings after his childhood had ended in early adolescence.

His grasp of Common was as good as, or better than, that of the common man of Kalzasi now, but his grammar was still often reminiscent of his first language, tinted by his mother's own, thus far for Rivin, unique accent.

The scents, sounds and sight that met him as he closed the door carefully behind him were, he knew, just as the Magus wanted them to be. For all he knew, he'd never actually seen the inside of the space, or even the man himself. If he was a man...

What his mentor and employer might look like under his magic made no different to Rivin, the relationship they were building was all that mattered. Knowing that no specific preamble was needed beyond the greeting he stood, watching as hot tea was poured, saying.

"You said, some time ago, that I could come to you when I had things that I would wish to learn. I have compiled a list, though, it is not long." He had an actual list, in one of his coat's many pockets, but as it contained only three things he did not bring it out.

He waited a moment but it was often Aurin's way to let him speak until he was finished, which felt...nice. When the redhead just glanced over his shoulder and nodded for him to continue he did.

"First, I wish to learn how to circumvent locking mechanisms." Why this was he did not feel as though he needed explain, his curiosity was limitless and constant, not to mention how it might aid in his work. "Second, I wish to learn to fight with the knives, as you do."

The reason for this was even more obvious, being able to defend oneself was a skill needed in and out of his work for the human.

"And Third, which is last, I would like to learn how to..." The hesitation wasn't embarrassment, but word choice, "Perform the seduction." The sentence went up at the end, making it a question so Aurin would know he wasn't sure if he was using the right terminology.

Tilting his head as he thought he explained,

"As you do, and as those who work in the Velvet Cabaret do, even as people do in the market. I believe this skill would also be quite useful in my work."

That he had no intention of using it in his personal life was something that Aurin should know, or at least guess based on their interactions surrounding sex.

There was little grace in the way he set the table with their fortified tea, only utilitarian efficiency. But Rivin was treated as a guest, and Aurin shared what he had with the strange man. A smile teased the corners of his mouth when Rivin got to the end of his list, but he merely gestured that Rivin should sit and join him for the hot refreshment. He took a sip of his own, enjoying the heat that didn't quite burn, though it trailed down his insides like a welcome magma.

"My lockpicking skills have atrophied a bit since I learned to just phase through things, but perhaps this would be a good opportunity for me to refresh my skills. You should be trained to defend yourself—and others." People often thought Aurin's tongue was sharper than his blades, but he had worked as hired muscle before. "And seduction... well, it is often easier to get what you want with honey rather than vinegar."

After another moment's consideration, Aurin nodded.

"I will teach you these things. You already have a strong foundation in observation, which ought to help you with all of the above skills."

The ginger didn't bring up what he would ask for in return. It was becoming clear that his investments in Rivin were likely to pay off. As much as he had craved freedom, he needed someone to fill the void left by the mysterious man who had shaped him. Whether he was aware of it or not, it seemed as though Aurin had become that person for him, a new kind of monster. In any case, he would rebuild his skulduggery skills, sharpen his blades upon a new student, and worm his way into the Lysanrin's heart and mind. And he would nut a lot, to be sure.

"I don't think it wise to start with sharp or intricate things while drinking," he said after another sip of his strong tea, "but perhaps I can offer some insight into seduction. Whether seducing someone into bed or merely manipulating them into doing what I want, I first identify what a persond desires..."

The smirking expression was a good sign, one that might portent teasing or difficult tasks but not rejection or serious problems with his requests. Again obeying he moved to sit when offered a place, taking a sip of the tea before waiting to see if the Magus tasted his. If this one wanted Rivin dead, he would be dead. The alcohol burn mixing with the almost-burn of the drink was unexpected but not unpleasantly so. It should not have been unexpected, however, almost all of his encounters with Aurin involved alcohol in some way.

Nodding as he sipped, it was his turn to listen while the other spoke. This was also comfortable, knowing he wasn't expected to carry on any sort of chit-chat without purpose.

Though Rivin did not know that those around him believed his fear of being caught by the man who legally owned him was due to a craving, demand, even, for freedom, he likely would not have corrected them if he had. Had the assumption been presented to him as fact he might have been surprised enough to react in a way Aurin or Sivan would notice. The fact was he had never thought to seek freedom for its own sake and had only left the doctor when what was required of him had been something he could not force himself to do. He had become accustomed to freedom, but, were he to be captive again, without being forced into acts he found repulsive, he would not have immediately attempted escape.

The idea of being under Aurin's, if not ownership, mastery as both mentor and employer was a considerable relief for the Lysanrin and he took great care not to jeopardize the connection. A small nod was his agreement that blade would be better learned when sober, and likely also closer to the start of a day.

Seduction seemed as though it might be easier to learn while both mildly inebriated and a little less mentally focused. He would focus to learn but it seemed as though a relaxed mind would allow a body to take more easily lessons on bypassing the conscious mind. That was what seduction was, bypassing the conscious to gain some hold on the subconscious.

Tilting his head, eyes going the interested light blue they did when he was trying to learn something he asked,

"How do you know, Magus? What they want."

"Observation," he said. "Leading questions. Anything you can do to get them to present you with more data..." He used one of Rivin's favorite terms. "...more context to develop a picture of who they are and what drives them. It becomes second nature after a while, more of an art and less of a science. But those are the foundations. Sometimes, desires are clear and simple, and if your goals are... then the seduction can be clear and simple. Observe a man drooling over a woman's prodigious rack, and all you need to do is offer him a sympathetic, generous set of tits and half your work is already done.

"If you want information, you have to figure out what will make you seem trustworthy. If you want someone to love you, well, that takes time and several stages of seduction..."

Aurin considered his apt pupil. Love hadn't been his goal with Rivin, but he had certainly figured out the shape of what he wanted and made himself fit like the perfectly matching puzzle piece. The Lysanrin was eager to please as any puppy, smart as a lash if somewhat lacking in common sense. He offered his service, his body, and his loyalty. Certainly, there were others who might fill this role for him, but Aurin had made himself available, become the benevolent Magus, and here they were. He wanted Runes and he wanted teaching, things he knew would only tie him tighter to Aurin's side, and still he wanted them.

"But the seduction to sex can give you insight into further seductions... as well as relax them around you, relaxing their tongues and their better judgments. Am I correct in understanding that you want to learn more than just how to lure someone into your bed?"

A ruddy brow rose curiously as he watched Rivin over the rim of his mug. Letting him in out of the cold, offering him warmth and the lightest of intoxications, having his bed right there and visible, he was curious how much of a nudge it would take for Rivin to decide he wanted sex. It would be too easy to ask for it; Rivin would simply comply.

Observation he was good at, discerning what others wanted or needed would require significant more study. More general study than he might get from observing those under the sway of sexual desire, he imagined. Having spent a great deal of his time watching people since he'd arrived in the city, he felt rather foolish for not having spent much of that time attempting to understand what they were after.

He was sure there must be books on how to obtain useful data from a subject, though the books outside of a laboratory setting seemed to have strange ways of thinking about such things. There were books with titles like 'how to make friends and influence people' which might be a good place to start. The Lysanrin was deep enough in his considerations that the analogy caught him off guard, despite the subject at had and he nearly laughed, a slightly sharp smile coming to the fore.

Getting someone to 'love' him had never been a goal, but using that to get something from someone, even if that thing was loyalty or protection, he could see the uses. It took him a moment, due to considering this, to realize what Aurin was asking him.

"Oh. Yes, I do need to learn how to make sex? No. Have sex, but good? Yes, I need to learn this as well."

'Making love' was a phrase people used when the sex had been good but he hated it, it didn't fit right in his mouth and it didn't explain what he wanted to learn either. He had assumed that learning how to give pleasure and receive it well was included in the idea of seduction.

"While it may not be the goal to get sex from someone, it would be foolish to assume, when offering it, that one would never have to deliver on the promise. Like training with knives and being unable to kill, yes?"

Why learn how to do a thing if you could not finish it?

"Books might help," he allowed, "but sometimes you can just ask. I know a fellow who's schtick it was to ask specifically what do you desire? He was often as not successful in startling people into sharing. He's easy on the eyes, though, and a good listener. Most people do like to hear themselves talk, and like people to pay attention to them, so it mightn't hurt just to be direct. If you find yourself genuinely attracted to a person, making that clear can also be a good thing. Most people like to be considered attractive. Attraction can... hm... resonate in a way that encourages a matching reaction. Some of that might be the animal in us. I don't know. I know that having eyes on you... that can excite... danger reactions. People have been prey to monsters, after all. But sometimes excitation is just excitation. And some people like to feel like prey. Others... like me... prefer to feel like predators. Does that make sense?"

Rivin could be such an avid listener that Aurin would lose track of his thoughts. But he frequently checked in like that, preferring more conversation and less lecture. Truth be told, Rivin was better educated than he was. Sometimes he would save words and phrases he heard from Elric and Yserloo, then look them up in books he now owned so he could have the context to understand conversations going on around him, but he was always playing catch-up, using his skills as a bullshit artist to make it through those first instances with new thoughts and ideas.

He didn't mind if occasionally they called him a philistine, but he didn't like not knowing things. And he did learn things from Rivin, whether the man meant to teach him or not. Perhaps that was another reason he kept him around.

At times it felt as if the Magus could hear his thoughts, which, he might very well be able to do. Rivin intended no harm to the human, in fact, though it was for his own benefit, he wanted great good for Aurin. A Magus was always dangerous, even Rivin was dangerous and he had not mastered even a single rune or magical ability. Far from being disconcerting, it was almost a relief to know that, in as much as Rivin himself understood what he was thinking, Aurin might also. Communication would likely never be a problem between them, even if it wasn't an aetheric ability that let the burnished man see his intended meaning, he still saw it, and that was good.

"Making attraction clear, when it is not present, but you wish it to be believed is also of use?" Seduction didn't have to be about deception, but Rivin imagined his use of it almost always would be.

"An opposite and equal reaction," He nodded, then shook his head, "Perhaps not equal, more so, or less, but, yes."

His eyes, still bright, narrowed, not at the idea that having someone watch could be dangerous, this was obvious, but at the idea that it might excite sexual reactions. It was very difficult to continue paying attention rather than falling down into conclusions about himself and his inability to release without someone watching. The Doctor and his assistants had certainly represented a danger to Rivin, it was something he should think on later. His focus returned to his teacher.

"Yes." His response was perhaps more clipped than he had intended so he moderated his tone and used some of the techniques Sivan had taught him to calm himself from the odd anger that was welling up.

"Yes, Magus, that makes sense. The chemical reactions in fear and arousal are very similar, we even call them the same in study."

'Arousal' was used to imply a heightened state in creatures, sentient or otherwise. As he was speaking his mind caught up to the last thing he'd been told. Blinking, head tilting, yet again, his eyes fixed on Aurin in a way that said he was now being studied to learn.

"Do you like to, forgive me Magus, but do you like to hunt others? In the forest, or the streets?" There was something exciting, and worrisome, about the idea of being stalked through the dark streets. Rivin preferred to be the stalker, though it did not sexually entice him to do so. Being tracked by an unknown figure was disturbing, but being tracked by Aurin was...

Imagining it, it felt like a game, but also dangerous, but in a good way? This was confusing, but it was gratifying to think he was beginning to grasp what others might feel.

"Yes, deception is a reliable tool. 'Tis easier when one doesn't have to feign interest or attraction. But here, I think your abilities at observation will help you again. When I don't find someone immediately attractive, I can usually study them until I find something about them that I like. Even in a non-sexual way, and build from there. But also... sometimes listening to people, showing them small kindnesses and considerations, will read as attraction. Most people are ultimately self-serving. On some level, that's necessary for survival. Tapping into that in other people can help put them in a mind to think more highly of you, whether for a sexual seduction or otherwise. Think of it as the principle of pleasure... if you are associated with someone enjoying themselves or feeling good, those feelings will be somewhat wrapped up in you. It's a foundation to build upon."

Aurin liked to watch the clockwork of Rivin's mind. Certainly, he could just read his mind, but mostly he liked to get a feel for where his thoughts were going and otherwise intuit things. One never knew when a trick would fail or be unavailable. His other skills couldn't be allowed to atrophy.

"Arousal," he mused, saying the word slowly.

"Hm, yes. I spent enough of my youth as prey that being a predator is empowering. Feeling myself to be a predator soothes those old wounds, I suppose." He was frank with Rivin because that was how their relationship had developed. "But a lot of sex, I think, is tied up in our childhood... I'm not saying children should be sexual objects at all... but as we become people, the hooks and buttons and all are set up so that when we are mature adults, adult things can be traced back to childhood experiences. And so sex is... the pursuit of pleasure yes, but also connection with other people. Adults don't play like children do, but sex is like that. It can be playful. We can playact things in a controlled environment. So, while I play at being a predator, it's a game... I'm not actively seeking to harm someone. And so we get the arousal.

"Building up to..." He took a thoughtful breath, and then continued. He knew Rivin watched him and those he spent time with. He had probably figured out what he was about to share. "Torin's father was a bastard. His first master at the forge was more like a father to him, but couldn't give him all of the things he needed, even as he watched him give them to his own children. So there is something in our relationship that... makes up for that. He wants nurturing and discipline from me as much as he wants sex and companionship."
