Name: Sulfrifter
Habitat: Areas that smell of sulfur, often near civilization / waste
Rarity: Rare
Threat: Medium
Description: Sulfrifters are small, yellow-furred creatures approximately the size of a raccoon. Their legs are short and sturdy, well-adapted for darting through the underbrush in pursuit of its prey. It has a long, bushy tail that is ringed with alternating bands of black and yellow fur.
They hunt by teleporting short distances, usually no more than a few meters at a time. They leave behind a puff of yellow smoke that smells strongly of sulfur each time they teleport. They primarily hunt small rodents such as rats, squirrels, and rabbits.
These creatures require regular exposure to sulfur to survive. This is typically obtained by making nests in areas where food goes to waste or, ideally, in an area that is naturally sulfurous.
Biome Role: Predator
Diet: Small creatures, mortal race babies
Aging & Reproduction: Sulfrifters reproduce by laying clutches of small, yellowish eggs. The eggs are hidden deep within their nests and are usually guarded by the parents. Oddly enough, the eggs can teleport as well if they sense danger. They take about a month to hatch that will grow to adulthood within a year. They can live to be ten years old.
Size: Small, about the size of a raccoon.
Abilities and Features:
Short range teleportation
Sharp claws
Cultural Significance (If applicable): They are smelly, hated creatures. If one is spotted in an area, it’s likely that’s a very undesirable place to live.
Reasons to interact:
Runeforgers can fashion the bones of the creature into a wand, ring, or even a staff if one has enough material to work with. The leftover bones are ground up into a powder and mixed with aetherite in an aether forge. The resulting viscerite is then added to the fashioned item. The end result is a tool with the power to blink its wielder to distances commensurate with the strength of the aetherite. If a traverser is crafting the item, it’s possible to implement more advanced traversion abilities instead of blinking.
Note: Artifacts related to their blinking ability always leaves behind a smelly cloud, similar to what a sulfrifter leaves behind when they blink. Refining that out requires great skill on the Runesmith's part.
Recommended Stats:
Because of their teleportation ability, Sulfrifters are difficult to catch. The best method is to locate their nests and set traps.
Expert hunting in order to properly track and kill.
